Considering CUBA
All eyes are on Cuba as more and more travel providers are unveiling new
people-to-people itineraries: exclusive trips that offer meaningful cultural
exchanges with artists, musicians, historians and other locals. We feature a few
of the most exciting journeys providing in-depth experiences amidst Cuba’s
eclectic architecture and celebrated white sand beaches.

• latour began its people-to-people
programs in Cuba in 2013 and will
offer even more itineraries this year.

Cape Winelands
Microlight flight
in South Africa
Mention of Africa’s Big Five instantly calls to mind majestic wildlife
roaming immense and untamed game reserves. The country of South
Africa boasts its lion-share of game drive standouts, but this diverse
destination also proffers discoveries in culture, romance, adventure
and entertainment alike. Find new adventures in South Africa’s “other”
Big Five that embrace its unexpected wonders. Whether hot air
ballooning, trekking the flower fields or touring its renowned museums
and art houses, we give you fresh ideas for creating one-of-a-kind
memories in South Africa. CONTINUED ON PAGE 8

A new take on the
BIG FIVE
in South Africa
TAKE TO THE SKIES
South Africa appears even more
breathtaking when hovering hundreds
of feet above its forested seaside cliffs
and wide-open savannah grasslands.
For a unique bird’s-eye view, lift off in a
microlight aircraft from the coastal town
of Ballito, a 30-minute drive from the city
of Durban. Gliding over the shores of
the Indian Ocean you may catch sight
of a pod of bottlenose dolphins playfully
jumping out of the warm waters, where
whale sharks, turtles and giant manta rays
abound. This open-air panorama also
rewards with an artful perspective of
the geometric patterns of verdant
sugarcane fields and pristine estates
of the KwaZulu-Natal region.
Another lofty experience awaits two
hours north of Johannesburg in the North
West province. During a safari by hot
air balloon, soar above the tree lines of
South Africa’s fourth-largest game reserve,
Pilanesberg National Park, which is nestled
in the crater of a 1.3 million-year-old extinct
volcano. Free from detection, you can
quietly spy on the bounding antelopes,
lumbering elephants, grazing herds of
zebra and the park’s famed white rhinos
roaming the mountains and river valleys.

FOLLOW A SCENTED TRAIL
South Africa’s seemingly never-ending
blooms can be spotted throughout towns
and cities year-round. Take fragrant
forays to heightened levels along the
Namaqualand flower route, a 168mile drive from the Northern Cape’s
Nieuwoudtville to Springbok. From July
through October, seedlings from more
than 4,000 different plant species blossom
into an endless sea of golden, orange and
purple wildflowers. See wonders like the
protea, the country’s national flower —
more than 300 types paint the region. Your
journey commences five hours north of
Cape Town, where a road will wend you
through what’s deemed South Africa’s
Outback, including awe-inspiring natural
attractions. You can opt for two sets of
wheels instead of four on a series of cycling
trails through Goegap Nature Reserve,
stopping amidst the fields of flowers for
an impromptu picnic as well as overnight
stays. Or, take an all-terrain vehicle to
stand on the “roof of Africa,” comprised
of imposing granite boulders overlooking
the Skilpad Wild Flower Reserve and
framed by the Kamiesberg mountains.
The route’s anchor towns of Port Nolloth,
Kamieskroon and Garies serve as ideal
stopping points along the way, where the
delicious scents wafting from charming
restaurants will inspire you to follow your
nose in a whole new direction.
ENJOY THE AGING PROCESS
The Cape Winelands harbor the oldest
wine industry outside of Europe and the
Mediterranean. To discover the roots
of these historical vineyards, set out on
Route 62, the world’s longest wine route,
stretching 528 miles between Cape Town
and Port Elizabeth. Be invited to private
tastings with local winemakers to sample
the region’s famed pinotage, a cross
between pinot noir and cinsaut grapes.
Just an hour beyond Cape Town’s city
limits, striated, fertile valleys give way to
Cape Dutch, Georgian and Victorian
mansions lining the streets of Stellenbosch,
surrounded by many of Africa’s most
celebrated varietals. Another mecca in the
Cape Winelands for gourmands and wine
connoisseurs is picturesque Franschhoek
Valley, home to La Residence, a luxury
five-star resort where each suite is carefully
appointed with priceless antiques and
fine art. Arrange a one-on-one wine and
cheese tasting with the sommelier in
the winery’s private cellar or wander the
30-acre working farm, vineyards, plum
orchards and gardens with the resident
SAVOR TIME TOGETHER
Cape Town’s vibrant culinary scene is on
the lips of global tastemakers, with chefs
vaunting everything from reinterpreted
African dishes to molecular cuisine using
regional ingredients. Dining in Cape Town
reveals a delectable confluence of culture,
with menus inspired by everywhere from
Portugal and the Congo to Brazil and
Malaysia. On the cutting-edge of dining
trends is the restaurant The Test Kitchen in
the Woodstock neighborhood. Indulge in
constantly evolving tasting menus helmed
by global sensation Luke Dale-Roberts.
His creative layering of local delicacies like
springbok with chestnuts or “linefish” (catch
of the day) with Black Forest ham puts a
modern twist on tradition. Ostrich, kudu (a
species of antelope) and mopane worms
are a few other local delicacies that culinary
adventurers shouldn’t miss while seeking
out African fare.
You can also savor authentic South
African braai (barbecue) on the beaches of
Durban’s Golden Mile during a gathering
called a shisa nyama, meaning “burn the
meat.” For these organized festivities,
the township supplies the grill for you
to prepare your meat while you intermix
with city residents — or simply let one of
the well-known braai meccas, like Max’s
Lifestyle, do all the cooking for you.
HONOR HISTORICAL SETTINGS
Imagine the rich history of the diamond
rush with a comprehensive tour of the
Kimberley Mine Museum, a replica of
the old mining town that gave birth to
the modern diamond industry and the
renowned De Beers company. Glimpse
the Big Hole, the 700-foot open mine dug
in 1872, and explore the diamond rush’s
mining operations, treasure hunting tools
and a vault showcasing exquisite jewelry
and uncut stones — including a replica
of the famed 83-carat diamond “Star of
South Africa.”
Another stellar example of South Africa’s
history is firmly rooted in the residential
township of Soweto in southwestern
Johannesburg; once home to South
Africa’s two most notable anti-apartheid
leaders. Here, your private guide will point
out Desmond Tutu’s former residence
en route to the late Nelson Mandela’s
first house — now the Mandela Family
Museum — where you can learn insightful
details about apartheid history. Take a
three-and-a-half-hour ferry ride from Cape
Town to Robben Island to further cultivate
your understanding of Mandela’s bold
stance, visiting the prison cell where he was
incarcerated for 27 years.
South Africa’s undeniably sophisticated
revolution has redefined the traditional
“Big Five” sojourn beyond the game
reserve safari. Expand your notion of
the country’s offerings with a twist on
tradition whether swimming with sharks,
absailing off Table Mountain or dancing
with native Zulu tribes. We can help
you tailor a list of activities in South
Africa sure to make a big impression.

Made
Vibrant traditions shine against Germany’s distinctive backdrop, from
the wetlands of the North Sea coastline to the snow-covered Alps.
Amidst this beauty, the ability to effortlessly blend cultural customs
with cosmopolitan edge makes this nation the consummate example
of European sophistication. There are multiple means for uncovering
this allure. And with the favorable exchange rate making a visit
even more enticing, we share with you a few of our favorite ways to
celebrate one-of-a-kind experiences “Made in Germany.”
SIP Beer has long been synonymous with Germany and stopping
in at a bar for a stein of Hefeweizen or visiting a beer tent for a pale
Weissbier at one of the many annual festivals is a must for any brewloving traveler. All German beers are required to contain only barley,
hops, water and yeast in accordance with the world’s oldest food law,
which celebrates its 500-year anniversary next year. Rivaling this foamy
libation as one of Germany’s most prized exports is the wine industry.

There are 13 wine regions in Germany
flourishing in the mild climate, bearing light,
fruity varietals. Perhaps most celebrated is
the riesling grape and Germany is home to
the world’s largest vineyard area devoted
to its famed fermentation. Since the days
of the Romans, wine has been produced
along the Rhine and Mosel rivers. Hop
from winery to winery via waterbus, one
of the most popular forms of transit for
exploring wine country. Picturesque vineyards
decorate the sloped banks as far as the
eye can see as you glide past storybook
castles and medieval villages, perfectly
pairing wine with quintessential Germany.
Our Favorite: Sample the finest varieties
in one place at the Bremen Ratskeller, the
historic restaurant’s vaulted cellar tucked
away beneath the town hall. It boasts 650
German wines, but its most prized vintage
is the Rüdesheim, dating back to 1653.
While only the cellarmaster and the current
mayor of Bremen are allowed a taste of this
cask wine, you’re sure to find the perfect
Schoppen, or glass, to order from the
impressive menu.
Unexpected Delight: Sweet fruits and
berries are also morphed into another
libation in the west: the liquor called
schnapps. The Black Forest region boasts
more than 14,000 approved distilleries
known for a cherry schnapps called
Kirschwasser. To see how it’s made you can
visit the Schnapps Museum or tour one of
the many distilleries such as Burgunderhof
Distillery in Baden-Württemberg, which
offers tastings allowing you to appreciate
this brandy’s subtlety of flavors. Or stop into
Bavaria’s Gasthaus zum Sünfzen, where the
chef distills apples from his own orchard
into smooth and distinctive schnapps.
SAVOR Home to more than 270
Michelin-starred restaurants, you’ll find no
shortage of culinary musings throughout
Germany. Even better, the country has

hundreds of Bib Gourmand restaurants,
offering three-course tasting menus starring
traditional dishes at an affordable price.
It’s difficult not to fill up on bread with
Germany boasting 600 different types, but
be sure to save room for dessert. In the lush
mountain state of Baden-Württemberg one
of Germany’s most unexpected delights is
a staple on restaurant menus: Black Forest
Cake. Rich chocolate, fruit and cream
create a layered blend that adds decadence
to each diversion.
Our Favorite: Greet the sun during an
early-morning visit to Germany’s largest
seaport in Hamburg. The city’s local Fish
Market gives you a taste of this trade
center’s 300-year history while you stroll
through stalls teeming with fish rolls and
barrels of rollmop herring. We especially
love the brunch held at the historic Auction
Hall each Sunday, accompanied by live
bands playing everything from jazz and
blues to rock and country music.
Unexpected Delight: The magical
Christmas Markets in Germany elevate
holiday cheer to new levels. When perusing
the stalls under twinkling lights in Saxony’s
state capital of Dresden, give in to your sweet
cravings and try traditional Christstollen. This
icing-coated fruitcake dates back to the 1400s
and is now ubiquitous as a Christmastime
treat across the nation.
SHOP Intricate details are at the
heart of German handicrafts, passed on
from generation to generation. Add to
your family heirlooms after a visit to the
Erzgebirge Mountains in Saxony, often
deemed Christmas country. It’s home to
the famed wood-crafted angels, delicate
carvings often painted with bright strokes
of gold and white. Southwest lies the
Black Forest, where cuckoo clocks adorn
the walls of stores and are available in just
about any design — from an intricately
carved biergarten complete with merry
drinkers to simple and sleek renditions.
Other reminders of your time in Germany
are the watches of A. Lange & Söhne,
manufactured in the town of Glashütte
since 1845.
Opportunities to shop run the gamut
in Germany and the nation’s capital city
of Berlin is a wonderful place to start your
spree. Boutiques, markets and bustling
shopping areas can be found at every
turn, including the largest department
store in Europe — Kaufhaus des Westens,
brimming with all of Germany’s top
brands from Bogner sweaters to Hugo
Boss suits. Within other famous city limits,
you’re awarded just as many options. In
Düsseldorf, meander the stately boulevard
of Königsallee, or Kö, lined with top
international fashion designers, restaurants
and picturesque views of the eponymous
canal. And just a 40-minute drive from
there will deliver you to Cologne’s
Belgian Quarter, boasting boutique labels
housed within stunning historic buildings
that decorate the main boulevards of
Hohe Strasse and Schlindergasse.
Our Favorite: Europe’s first porcelain was
created in Germany in efforts to compete
with China’s finest creations. Awarded the
“most high decree” was Meissen porcelain,
which can still be found in the town of
Meissen, near Dresden. For an iconic
piece, look for one featuring their signature
crossed swords, used in 1722. You can also
ogle ceramic treasures from centuries ago
in Mettlach at Villeroy & Boch’s Discovery
Center, showcasing the works by the
manufacturer whose tiles were laid on the
legendary Titanic. In Berlin you are given
the chance to paint a piece of porcelain
under the guidance of an experienced artist
at KPM World, one of the oldest surviving
commercial sites in the city, exhibiting
exquisite Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur.
Unexpected Delight: Gourmands will
find their perfect souvenir in Solingen at
WÜSTHOF or Zwilling J.A. Henckels, both
premium knife producers committed to the
finest quality. For a look back at their origins,
make a trip to the Deutsches Klingenmuseum
(Blade Museum), also in Solingen.
DRIVE Germany’s ever-changing
landscape beckons road trips, winding
through cities bursting with incredible
architecture and taking you along tranquil
rivers flanked by lush greenery. Cruising one
of the 150 scenic vacation routes will deliver
you to the doorstep of incredible sites such
as Neuschwanstein Castle, the model for
Cinderella’s Castle at Walt Disney World.®
Underlying all of this enjoyment is German
engineering, with companies like Volkswagen,
Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche
continuing to lead the auto industry today.
Considered the birthplace of the automobile
with the development of combustion engines
in the 1880s, car fanatics can take in the
country from the driver’s seat of a dream
vehicle, perhaps in a vintage Porsche rented
for the day.
Our Favorite: A guided tour of the BMW
Museum leads you through the Munich
plant to admire the precision that goes
into producing each automobile. You can
also visit Stuttgart for the Mercedes-Benz
Museum, where you’ll be transported
into the past and future while viewing the
collection’s 160 vehicles.
Unexpected Delight: While the
Porsche Museum is in Stuttgart, Leipzig
is home to the Porsche Sport Driving
School — where you can experience
the ultimate thrill ride. After watching
test drivers go for a spin, you can take a
high-speed lap around the track yourself.
Call us today to help you craft an
über-exciting journey that explores
all of Germany’s delights.

Kanazawa Castle
Affectionately called “Little Kyoto,”
the town of Takayama in central Japan
brims with temples and shrines. Wooden
buildings latticed with blooming wisteria
command mountain views on the Miya
River and daily farmers’ markets lend the
opportunity to chat with vendors about
their woodcarvings, sugar sculptures and
home-made pickles. Travel by rickshaw to
Chanoyu-no-mori, a forested ceramics
museum and tea house, to join in a tea
ceremony performed by a true master.
Watch as he froths the ceremonial green
tea known as matcha with a bamboo
whisk, then raise the wide-mouthed
bowl for a sip as he wishes you “yoo
oidensatta,” a phrase expressing gratitude
for visiting from afar.
Connecting Takayama with the nearby
hill town of Kanazawa is the Three Star
Road, named for the prestigious Michelin
rating that the two villages share.
Encounter the ancient traditions that
remain a fixture of modern life during
a visit to the 195-year-old HigashiChayagai, the geisha quarter. Rows
of machiya (wooden townhouses) line
narrow streets where porcelain doll-like
residents clad in elaborate kimonos
primly stroll under the shade of painted
umbrellas. Attend a private performance
by geishas at Kaikaro, a glamorously
refurbished chaya tea house, to
experience the talents these entertainers
once used to amuse the elite during
Japan’s Edo period: masterfully
playing a floor drum and performing
intricately choreographed traditional
dances. Find out how their kimonos are
designed during your tour of master
designer Toshiaki Shimomura’s studio
and try your hand at kagayuzen, the art
of silk dying, under his expert direction.

Kyoto’s reign as an Imperial City lasted
1,000 years. At every turn you can

stories of the samurai. Perhaps nothing
exemplifies the imprints left by this

solo sojourns, your focus can be on simply
enjoying yourself and wondering what the
next adventure holds in store. We look at
a few destinations that lend themselves
especially well to solo travel paired with a
few motivating factors to get your wheels
spinning for your next active vacation.
Decadent Rewards
In Italy, reap the harvest of Tuscany’s
hilly countryside with a wine tasting and
traditional meal at a historic family-owned
farmhouse near Pienza. Enjoy hearty
Sienese cuisine served family-style, such
as ribollita, a Tuscan vegetable and bread
soup, as you get to know other like-minded
travelers. Along the way, meet acclaimed
author and wine expert Dario Castagno,
who can teach you how to pair the perfect
chianti with Tuscan fare. Closer to home,
taste your way through California’s
Napa and Sonoma Valleys as you pedal
through pastoral landscapes of grapes
ripening on the vine — savoring worldclass vintages at wineries including Frog’s
Leap and PlumpJack. Find fruit-imbued
spa treatments at the Fairmont Sonoma
Mission Inn & Spa, where you can recharge
with a chardonnay and olive oil exfoliation
or a nourishing grapeseed oil massage.
If it’s nature’s majesty that motivates
you, destinations boasting breathtaking
vistas prove ideal. A multi-sport
Alaska adventure leads you into the
heart of the state’s vibrant frontier to
hike glaciers and kayak with otters
among sheltered coves. Camping with
newfound friends under star-filled skies
fosters a sense of community as you
sit around a toasty fire, sharing stories
of the day’s discoveries. Spin through
emerald hills and past woolly sheep
in Ireland, where panoramic views
and sweeping coastlines intermix with
history, castles and lore. Spend your
days biking through seaside villages
and stopping at local watering holes
for a taste of true Irish culture. You’ll be
welcomed to charming guesthouses
each evening, where you can garner
extra savings by sharing a room with
a fellow explorer — a valuable perk of
opting for solo-centric tours.
Exotic Intrigue
The allure of jungle-clad destinations
beckons the inner adventurer. Trek
through the rainforest atop an elephant
in Thailand, where you can later
sample the country’s tropical fruits at
a local market. Reenergized by juicy
litchi (lychee fruit), pedal through
thriving rice paddies, braking to meet
smiling locals and to witness Buddhist
temple rituals. Set your sights on
colorful Costa Rica as you fly through
the treetops on a zip-line, sharing the
canopy with howler monkeys, keelbilled toucans and sloths. Back on terra
firma with the group, make your way
across a lava field in Arenal Volcano
National Park. While the volcano is
said to be one of the most active in
the world, your Trip Leader will ensure
your safety while divulging insider
knowledge about the old lava flow
under foot — and serve to remind
you that although you’re traveling solo,
you’re not alone.

annual Coronation Festival. This city
on the Danube River transforms into a
Medieval-era fairytale, wholly transporting

the Bratislava Castle, watch elaborately

crowned more than 10 kings over a period

EASTER MARKETS
Prague’s nickname, “The Golden City,”
proves even more fitting during the Easter
season. The flaxen hues of gilt roofs and
spires are matched by the stalls of the
Prague Easter Markets, lined by hot cross
buns baked to a perfect eggy yellow
and steins of amber Pilsner Urquell beer.
Between March and April of 2016, hear
the daily markets open to the chimes of
the 600-year-old astronomical clock, which
dazzles on the hour with a mechanical
ballet of moving statues. Browse the lanes
of over 90 wooden huts for crafts and
souvenirs like wooden toys, embroidered
textiles and Easter eggs covered in
elaborate primary-colored patterns
and etchings. Personalize an egg with a
hand-painted name, or pick up a pomlázka
— a braided willow branch adorned with
ribbons. Wave it overhead while joining
the locals in a merry procession where
the sound of wooden rattles replace the
clanging church bells silenced for three
days leading up to Easter. A host of
cultural entertainment is another seasonal
specialty, from folk bands to dance
performances and holiday-themed crafting
activities for children. For a taste of the
Easter fare traditionally enjoyed by Czechs
this time of year, savor the four-course
menu at Restaurant Pálffy Palác, featuring
rabbit loin with nettle stuffing and finishing
with Czech Easter cake topped by a dollop
of vanilla cream.
Let us plan your next visit in conjunction

In Russia, perhaps nothing is more
iconic than a glass of vodka and
spoonful of caviar. At Belmond
Grand Hotel Europe in St.
Petersburg, the Caviar Bar and
Restaurant boasts the country’s
only full-time professional vodka
sommelier. With live Russian music
to underscore the evening, nibble on
blinis topped with beluga, oscietra,
salmon or rare golden caviar from
albino sterlet as the sommelier
offers an impressive selection from
the flavored vodka trolley. Sip
samples of ice-cold vanilla vodka,
house-made apple and honey
vodka and even an innovative
infusion of pine nuts and garlic.
tea master5
Take your tea with Asian influence
at Shangri-La Hotel, Vancouver.
This year, the hotel welcomed to its
staff tea master Che Huadong, an
expert who studied martial arts and
the ancient Chinese practice of Kung
Fu Tea-making in his native Sichuan
province. Learn proper handling and
tasting techniques from this master
tea sommelier as he pours you the
perfect cup from his four-foot-long
spouted teapot in the Xi Shi Lounge.
Later, catch a performance of his
Chinese Face Changing Opera or
Kung Fu Tea Show five days a week.

SWEDEN
NORWAY
DENMARK
Scandinavia’s narrow residential lanes and food
markets bursting with local treats entice travelers
to explore its characteristic charms. With Sweden,
Norway and Denmark being in such close
proximity of each other, it’s tempting to visit them
all within one trip. To maximize your time and help
you create a singular adventure, we share a few
of our favorite “how to” tips for enjoying iconic
activities in each locale.
How To: Museum Hop in Sweden
Magasin III Museum and Foundation for Contemporary Art, Stockholm, Sweden
The Pulpit Rock, Norway

T H E T R AVE L MAGAZ IN E
Rosenborg Garden, Copenhagen, Denmark
Over 30,000 islands, skerries and rocks
comprise the archipelago of Sweden’s capital
city of Stockholm, where the Baltic Sea’s
windswept ruggedness offsets the chicness of
this trendsetting metropolis. While many of
these islands are largely uninhabited, several
harbor unique heritage, idyllic attractions
and fantastic museums — over 75 of which
can be accessed with the purchase of a
Stockholm Card. In addition to entrance fees,
this convenient pass includes travel by public
transport ranging from boats to buses.
After visiting some of Stockholm’s most
acclaimed sites clustered around the port
and city center — such as the bigger-thanlife installations at Magasin III Museum and
Foundation for Contemporary Art — set off
the beaten track, combining museum-going
with island hopping. A short trip to the island
of Lidingö delivers you to the home and
studio of sculptor Carl Milles at Millesgården.
Delicate water sprites and other whimsical
sculptures dot the landscape and the studio
displays the artist’s original castings and
tools. You can even take home your own
Milles creation, such as a replica of his famed
flowerpot design dating back to the 1920s.

THESE ARE JUST A FEW of the many
vacations we offer. For more options, see page 34
How To: Picnic in Denmark
Smørrebrød, Denmark
Just a 20-minute walk from central
Stockholm is the island of Djurgården,
home to the world's only preserved
17th-century ship, which is proudly
displayed inside the Vasa Museum.
On the same island is the open-air
museum of Skansen, where you can hear
shoemakers, bakers and other craftsman in
period dress recount Sweden’s fascinating
history. Relive your favorite hits of more
recent history, the 1970s, at ABBA The
Museum nearby — you can even make
your way on stage to appear alongside
holograms of this world-acclaimed
Swedish pop band.
A boat tour is the best way to arrive
upon the picturesque village of Vaxholm,
providing you with a panoramic glimpse
of the wooden façades painted in delicate
pastels before up-close encounters with
local traditions like fika, a social coffee
break with pastries. Get a taste of history
at the Vaxholm Fortress Museum. Dating
back to the 16th century, it showcases
models and features interactive
environments portraying life in the
fortress during wartime.

Vigeland Sculpture Park, Oslo, Norway
How To: Hike in Norway
Famous for easily accessible fjords and
mountains, Norway offers some of the
most stunning scenery in all of Scandinavia,
rife with opportunities for outdoor
adventure. One of the most breathtaking
exhibits of natural wonder is Lysefjord, a
26-mile-long fjord where you can hike to
vantage points such as Preikestolen, The
Pulpit Rock, towering 1,900 feet over the
pine-fringed cliffs. Or don a pair of sturdy
hiking boots to follow the well-marked
trail leading from Øygårdsstøl Kjerag
Panoramic Restaurant to Kjeragbolten,
a round boulder wedged solidly in a
mountain fissure high above the waters
of Lysefjord. A sightseeing boat ride
allows you to revel in these geographic
landmarks as well as sea-level sites like
Hengjanefossen, a waterfall plummeting
over 1,300 feet and “Vagabond’s Cave,”
the purported hideaway of legendary
tax evaders.
If you’d prefer a more leisurely entrée
into Norway’s natural splendor, wander
down to the lakeside villa of composer
Edvard Grieg and his wife, Nina. Just
Vasa Museum, Djurgården, Sweden
outside the city of Bergen, Troldhaugen is
set in a wooded area where you can learn
about Grieg’s melodies and listen to daily
summer piano performances. The concert
hall features sweeping views of Lake
Nordas as seen through a floor-to-ceiling
glass backdrop.
You can effortlessly traverse one of
Europe’s highest mountain plateaus during
a train ride from Bergen to Oslo. This is
just one of the options comprising the
customizable Norway in a Nutshell® tour,
whisking you off to the country’s most
awe-inspiring locations via train, bus or
boat ride along the fjords. Purchasing
The Bergen Card and The Oslo Pass is
another smart way to maximize your fun.
The capital city’s Vigeland Sculpture Park
blends green space with artistry, featuring
more than 200 monuments of bronze,
granite and cast iron by Gustav Vigeland.
Another must-see for art lovers in Oslo
is the Munch Museum, created after
legendary artist Edvard Munch, who gifted
the city with thousands of his paintings,
prints, drawings and notes.
Home to environment-friendly
residents and packed with
incredible cuisine, Copenhagen,
Denmark serves as the perfect
destination for picnicking in the
warmer months. A bicycle is the
choice mode of transit for locals
here, with nearly half using two
wheels for their daily commute.
Take out a city bike from one
of the local docking stations,
equipped with touchscreen
navigation for seamless
sightseeing. Or, we can help you
reserve a bike with electric assist
and built-in GPS to make your
ride all the more leisurely. Pedal
over to Meyers Deli, a top spot
for gourmands to gather picnicbasket stuffs in the fashionable
neighborhood of Frederiksberg.
This combination eatery-meetsgrocer vaunts organic ingredients,
freshly baked bread and other
Danish delights. Of course a
smørrebrød, Denmark's traditional
open-faced sandwich, is always a
lunchtime staple, but you can also
opt for the Picnicbox, a prepared
lunch comprised of delicacies
like North Atlantic shrimp and
local cheeses. Once you’ve filled
your basket to the brim, make
your way to the sprawling lawns
and gardens of Frederiksberg
Palace. Or visit King’s Garden,
also known as Rosenborg
Garden, the country’s oldest royal
gardens where enormous graphic
flowerbeds scent the air of your
outdoor dining experience.
You can spend your afternoon
visiting other famed city sites
including the final resting place
of notable Danes such as
philosopher Søren Kierkegaard
and author Hans Christian
Andersen. Spin your way down
the cycling path to a string of
large reservoirs, known as Søerne
(The Lakes), lined by grassy
slopes shaded by chestnut trees
and wide promenades where you
can make a refreshing pit stop
at one of the cafés. Just north of
Copenhagen, the Deer Park, or
Dyrehaven, also offers incredible
bike trails and you can always
opt for a saddle atop a horse
instead, exploring the cultivated
woodlands on horseback. Taking
out a solar-powered GoBoat
along Copenhagen’s quaint
canals is another sustainable way
to explore city sites. Or, simply
flash your Copenhagen Card,
which includes unlimited use of
public transport and access to 72
attractions. End your day with a
more fanciful epicurean escapade
than a picnic pursuit, making
your way to Restaurant Tårnet in
the Christiansborg Palace tower
— the highest tower in the city.
Along with modern Danish cuisine
you’ll savor astonishing views of
Copenhagen and even Sweden
on a clear day.
Whether you prefer a Scandinavia
vacation packed with outdoor
adventure or the finest culinary
delights, your journey begins with
the flight there. Scandinavian
Airlines (SAS) offers the most
non-stop flights from the
United States to this Northern
European peninsula from five
different American hubs: New
York (Newark), Washington D.C.
Dulles, Chicago O’Hare, Houston
IAH and San Francisco SFO.
