Foreword
This year marks the 16th issue of this Project Prospectus which has been well
received over the years. For the students, this is an invaluable collection of their
work, a souvenir document for the graduating students, a record for remembrance
— to review, recollect and re-enjoy their student life during the study in the
Division of Computer Studies.
Every year, project prospectus is distributed among the student body, our
supporting and associate companies in the industry, local and overseas
institutions. The whole series forms a collection of project titles and project ideas
on IT applications development. The add-on titles created every year reflect new
areas of application development, development methodology and technology
deployment. This creativity does not only witness the devotion and dedication of
our students and supervisors, but also demonstrates the abilities and potential
of our graduating students.
The continuous trust from the industry on granting sponsored projects ensures
the quality, ability and professional practices of our students. This year we have
3 sponsored projects out of a total of 19 projects.
It would not be possible to have this publication without the accomplished projects
of the graduating students. Thanks to all of them, their supervisors as well as
the industry supervisors of the sponsored project companies. Preparation of this
publication is never an easy task; it demands lots of efforts, devotion and cooperation of various parties. Thanks to the General Office for their support and
co-ordination, the project co-ordinator, Mr. Terence Chan, for collecting all these
intellectual products for listing in this prospectus.
Enjoy reading!

Project Description
The aim of our system is helping the user to know more about the Associate Degree programmes in Community
College of City University (CCCU).
The main target of our system is the people who want to study the Associate Degree programmes, such as the post
secondary school students, pre-Associate Degree students and the adult students.
First, there is a qualification checking system. It can check whether the qualification of the users enough or not.
Since many users would wonder if they are qualified to study in the Associate Degree programme, our qualification
checking system can fit their needs. Besides, it is efficient and user-friendly as the user only needs to choose the
options in the check lists and then the results will be provided within a few minutes.
In addition, we provide four games for the users to deepen their understanding of the programmes. There are
totally four departments and 34 programmes in CCCU. Each game represents one of the departments, which are
Business Programmes, Language and Communication Programmes, Science and Technology Programmes and Social
Science Programmes. In the games, the user has to guess what the programme is. And we will provide a reference
book which has the information about the programmes to the users to help them find out the answer. Throught
the games, the users would know comprehensibly about that programme.
Furthermore, there are four animators guiding the users to use the system. They would guide the users step by
step for using the system. Also, there are some animations which are played by those four animators. Therefore,
the system would be more interactive and attractive.
All in all, we hope the system can provide an interesting way for users to get more ideas on choosing a suitable
Associate Degree programme and they can be more familiar with the CCCU programmes after using our system.

Project Description
GOALS AND IDEAS
For us, media works are not just products to earn for livings, but also kinds of arts to let us express ourselves. We
want to better the society through media works. We hope everyone who watched our works would have introspection
on their value of judgement among life, money etc.
Late song and Anymore are two music and videos. We hope people would experience the concept we want to
tell. We hope we could bring them in to thinking.
Late song is to tell people to think about what they really want to do. Life is short. But many people wasted their
life on something out of their willing (e.g. a disliked job as to maintain their families, envision from parents). But
are they happy to do all these? We should find our dream, and do what we really enjoy doing. We should never let
ourselves regret when getting old.
Anymore is about the desire of people. As time goes by, people get rich. But they never satisfied with thing they
have. Their value of judgement unconsciously turns to creature comforts, like pursuing more expensive brand names
like LV, Gucci. While some Africans can’t even cope with hunger, is it what the rich’s exactly need? Anymore is the
question to ask and remind people that, the most valuable thing are people themselves.
SUITABILITY
While we are interested and experienced in music and video productions (some of us play guitars and work as free
lance video producer), we selected to combine our pros and corporate to try a challenging project.
LATE SONG
Late song is a fast Indy rock song. Thus, the video frame would change very fast to match the rhythm of the song.
In the video, a degenerating old woman thinks about her life. She always sees herself (a little girl) doing things that
waste time in the past. There are band jamming shots singing sadly to match the rhythm of the song. There are
also some bitty abstract shots to elaborate the mood of the song.
ANYMORE
Anymore is a moderate Indie rock song. The frames may be slower. And the shots would be the contrast between the
rich and the poor, a lot and a few, valuable and invaluable, meaningful and meaningless things. The camera would
pan from a photo to another photo in a photo album. When it goes to the photo, the photo works like video.
PERSPECTIVE AND SCHEDULLING
We composed a few melodies and chords at first. As we are not professionals, matching melodies with lyrics and
music becomes a strict challenge. Arranging all other instruments like keyboard, drum and bass is another difficult
task. After tried making some demos, we learnt basic techniques of audio recording and mixing. For example, apply
different effects (e.g. reverb, chorus) on tracks. A demo of late song’s MV was made in summer 07 because we want
to have more experience on video production.
The pre productions of video (story boarding, character selection etc) are almost finished. We scheduled to finish
production part (video shooting) before the end of Easter holiday. And in the last two weeks of the schedule, we
would work on paper works and post-production (video and audio editing, effects).
We could possibly finish the whole recording and mixing faster than before. We planned to spend two days in Easter
holiday to work out the final version of our songs.
We sure that our works are highly related to the knowledge we learnt in CIMP as video and audio productions are
some of the highlighted topics in CIMP. So, we could gratefully apply what we learnt, and tell the public our fruitful
results in studying in CIMP

Project Description
Our Project is a 20-min short movie. With our creative story, our imagination will be presented with real scene and
combination of computer effects and graphics.
This is a story about an abnormal girl that has lived for 2000 years and she is one of the twelve abnormal human
in the world. She cannot feel, listen, smell and talk but her eyes has extraordinary abilities that can be a substitute
of all of her other sense organs.
The girl fell that she is going to face a serious disaster but she doesn’t know what is going to be happened. One
day she saw a lot of apples under the tree near her home and she picked one, with her ability, she found that the
apple was left by one of the abnormal human. And she felt there was a special connection with him. They fell in
love quickly, but because of their special power, they had to keep distance or they would die. The movie would
describe their love story and how they overcame the fear of death, because of love.
All the imaginary scenes will be presented with creative effects and graphics that have been developed, and
experimented and applied to the story with our media knowledge and creativity, in addition there would be 2D and
3D animation such as Flash Animation and 3D Graphics. We have also developed our DIY equipments such as jib
(taking shots with smooth movement with certain height and 360 directions with a pivot), dolly (smooth horizontal
movement even on rough surface), chroma key setup (a 9 feet*12 feet green screen to let human characters combine
with computer graphics), lighting (especially shooting at night) with mobile electricity supply to improve the quality
of product.

Project Description
Because of the rapid cadence of the people in our society, social problems happening everyday are easily found on
the newspapers. To pay close attention to this issue, a short video will be produced by our team.
This is a story about a 19-year-old mother who has not yet married, her son was born when she was 14. She did
child abuse and neglected her son for a long period of time.
We want to use this short video to bring out the importance of caring and educating children in their childhood.
Moreover, we want to inform the society that single-parent families have not got enough support, they are definitely
a significant problem to be concerned about.
Besides, we will use animation, special video effects and interactive software to introduce the video. It is to combine
the skills we learned in the past two years.

Project Description
This project aims to develop an interactive web site for the promotion of CityU campus and Associate Degree (AD)
Programmes offered by Community College of City University (CCCU). To enable A-level students to understand
more about the programmes, the Web site is developed using multimedia components, such as text, photos, video
clips, sound and flash animation. The flow of information is also structured in such a way that it is viewed from
students’ viewpoints with indexing. This is different from traditional paper promotion, which emphasises on the
text and pictures only with less interaction.
The website consists of the following six parts that are linked by a story about school life.
1. The first part is an introduction of main character using flash;
2. The second part is about the sequences and actions on the date of AL announcement using animations and
comic pictures;
3. The third part is about the teaching facilities at CCCU using statistic pictures;
4. The fourth part is about the activities of CCCU using videos and photos;
5. The fifth part is about the opportunities for further studies after graduating from AD using animation; and
6. The last part is the information on the procedures of applying for AD using text.

Project Description
The project aims in producing a video. This video is a circulating a human life which consists of various up and
down is the main theme of the story. It is a character driven screenplay. The story is based on the different stages
of a man in his life. A man can gain different experience in their own life for facing whatever happiness or sadness.
After watching the video, it is expected that the audience can appreciate their happiness and sadness as everybody
go through several up and down in their life.
Purpose of our project
This video describes a whole life of a man, from his birth to death. He will experience many happiness and
unhappiness, like a normal person. Through this story, we want to encourage somebody who thinks himself/herself
is in misfortune.
Its structure, organization, and approach
As the video combine real and virtual objects, the shooting time and drawing time need to schedule properly. The
shooting schedule will last for two weeks, and the drawing schedule lasted for four weeks. Postproduction including
the completion of video lasted for six weeks.
The source of our idea
In order to make the story more realistic, the idea of the story is stimulated by combined imagination and personal
experiences of our team members.
Goal of our video
There is an educational goal in our story. It tells the audiences that “tasting the sadness and happiness is a path
everyone must go through”. The video encourages audience to enjoy their life is the main idea that we want to
present.
Skills
As some ideas come from imagination; it cannot be taken in the real world. Therefore, we have used 2D and 3D
animation to create some parts of our video. We have also used the real video shooting technique to take the
background of the video. Our team needs to have a detailed plan in order to combine the video properly with the
animation.

Project Description
Brief introduction:
Cheerio will produce around twenty minutes of color video to be used as an entertainment medium for all kinds of audiences.
The video will present the relationship between an artist and his cartoon creations, which indeed, reflect the important emotions
of the artist’s growth status. The video will emphasize the process of a young artist’s growth, showing the important emotional
development with different experiences for many youth.
Story outline:
The story begins from a teenage Cheung, who likes to draw cartoons day and night. Recently, he has created his beloved character,
Little V. Since then, Little V was the center of attention for Cheung. One day, his cartoon characters started moving in his sketch
book. All of Cheung’s other creations were jealous of Little V and began to hate him. Each of these characters was created by
Cheung under different emotional situations. So, his cartoons’ characters symbolize the many different faces of Cheung. You can
tell the kind of emotion they have by their costume. The interaction between his cartoons represents the conflicts of his different
emotional situations. Although the characters are different, they have something in common – they treasure friendship as their
most important value. To save Little V from his pitiful situation surrounded by a jealous environment, Cheung recalls some best
friends who appear in his life and he asks them to see his created cartoons. Besides, the story shows how Cheung re-positioned his
attitude in facing different situations during his youth development. Can he learn to treasure all his work finally?
Meaning in the story:
Throughout the story, we would like to convey the message that the artist should treasure all of his work no matter how good
or “bad” it is or the artist feels how it is. His work is part of his life. He should accept his different emotion situations under his
development. Artists are the father or mother of their created characters. Did artists consider about the characters feeling? Did they
remember the emotion when they created them? Secondly, we insist that artists should put full effort into his work. To create a
touching piece of art, it must first be touched by the artist himself. Let’s see the Hong Kong artist’s work. Most of them just copy
from others and lack of love in the creation. Art work in their mind seems to be a commercial product. We hope to carry out these
messages to public, especially artists. No matter we can just do a little, we do our best and no regret!
Way of production:
The work will mirror animation and human activities. It will show the interaction between human and cartoon. Through powerful
video editing techniques, we hope we can carry out a miracle image on the screen. We would like to share the procedures of our
works. First, we decided the script and drew a series of storyboards. Then, based on the storyboard, we used Flash to create the
animation part. At the same time, we shot the reality part by video camera. After these two parts were completed, we input the
video that we shot to the Intel PC and used Premiere Pro, editing the animation and video. Then, we used After Effect to mix up
the part where animation and video were in the same shot. Lastly, we added some special effects to it and ran it back through
Premiere Pro for video packing.
We try to mix up animation and reality since we all are the fanciers of animation and movie. Video was chosen since the effect of
video is more powerful than words. And we present our thoughts by video better than words. Animation was chosen because Hong
Kong teenagers and adults mostly are animation fanciers, they enjoy animation, and we know that we are animation fanciers too.
However, the main point is anime creation is our dream!
Lastly, we hope you enjoy the work that is full of our love to our son Little V.

Project Description
In the 70s, “Shanghai Street” was very famous and prosperous. Many different kinds of shops were located there.
However, it has become less famous and prosperous nowadays than in the past. Teenagers and young people do
not know much about “Shanghai Street”, such as where it is located or what kind of traditional shops can be found
there.
We suggest that young people should be more concerned about the development of “Shanghai Street”. In this project,
we have introduced the history of “Shanghai Street” and shown what kind of activities and shops are available in
this area. We also try to encourage young people to show their interest in “Shanghai Street”.
The main objective of this project is to let young people learn more about the community in the street. They need to
have the right concept of protecting and keeping the historical streets well. Moreover, we would like the government
to give more support to this kind of street. Although “Shanghai Street” is getting “old”, it has its own values.
Main Product:
A Website describing the background information of Shanghai Street. It contains the following parts:
Profile — A description and personal information of hosts in the video
History — A textual description of the past business activities and prosperity of the area
Photos — These include the photos of shops, people doing business, young people and historical buildings
Video — In our video, we will interview some shop owners and young people to get their impression about the past
and future of Shanghai Street. It will be presented in the form of a TV program like <News Magazine>.
BBS — To allow users to leave their messages about their feelings or opinions on the Website.

Project Description
Our project aims to provide a fun and easy-to-use game that helps users train their memory.
We want to offer an alternate memory training game to the world. Most memory training games on the Internet
are usually text based trainers or puzzle games. Their ideas are similar to traditional board games. They are dull,
unattractive, and generally not appealing to their users. With our game, we plan to change that. We will improve
the attractiveness and usefulness of the game using 3D graphics and game engine
Since most memory training games are 2-dimentional, our idea was to create and make use of their third dimensions
of a 3D environment to provide users with a different perspective to train their memory of using the same concepts.
We will make use of the game engine in Blender. The plan was for the user to memorize a floor plan and move the
objects according to the floor plan. All of this is achieved from mental image of the users’ memory and some basic
logic skills.
The concept of the sliding blocks used in Sokoban and Klotski is one of the key elements we plan to implement into
our game. This is the main component of our game.
Our game features high quality animation scenes and 3D models. Combined with a compelling storyline, this gives
an incentive for the users to complete the level and improve their memory. School children can benefit the most
from this experience.
Before the game starts, you are asked to create your own player which is used to save the progress and the results
of the player. After that, you can select your own character to play the game. In the game, there is a lobby to select
different stages and level of difficulty. You will be given a certain amount of time depending on the level of difficulty
of the tasks. After that, the countdown timer starts and you have a time set to finish the required tasks. Your goal
is to rearrange the objects as you remember it. There will be no access to the floor plan once the level has started.
Your score will be based on how many objects you positioned correctly within the time limit. At the end you are
given a mark and you can view a report of your performance.
The objects’ placement is random, so the same levels will be different each time. You will not be able to learn the
floorplan by heart and hope to finish in a quicker time.
We will be using the game engine in Blender given that the program is open source and is licensed under the GNU
General Public License (GPL).

Project Description
Adventure College is a 3D Role play game base on skills we have learnt in the Digital and Media Programme for the last
two years. The game is about a student in an adventure school and it targets for teenagers who love action RPG.
The Game will include the following feature:
Story Background:
In the story, player is the adventure. The school trains adventurers so they can survive in the world. The player has
to complete the assigned tasks in order to be graduated from the school. If the player cannot complete the task
nor obtain sufficient score, he will fail in the game. The adventurer can get experience (EXP) through the fighting
which can improve other abilities.
Characters and Ability:
There are three main roles, Sabre, Caster and Archer in the game.
• Sabre ( ) has strong attack in short distance.
• Caster ( ) has more magic attack.
• Archer ( ) can shoot arrow.
The player can get EXP after killing monster or finish a mission
• Experience (EXP): When it is full, the player will get extra point.
There are six abilities for each Character:
• Constitution (CON): affects the HP (health) of the character.
• Strength (STR): affects the damage power of the physical attack the enemy.
• Magic (MAG): controls the ability of using magic. More magic point, more efficiency of using magic functions.
• Agility (AGI): controls the attack speed and running speed of the character.
• Defense (DEF): controls how much damage can reduce from the other one attack.
• Luck (LUK): affects the probability that the enemy will give how much money to you after it dead.
Mission:
There are 5 stages in total. The first stage is the tutorial stage, the second is the Rose garden, the third stage is
the Rosella toy house, the forth stage is the Terence refrigerator, and the last stage is final exam. In some of the
stages, there are several mini tasks which would not affect the main game play, but extra points will be given to
the players who have finished them.
Battle system:
Players have to control their own characters to defeat monsters and bosses will appeare in each stage. For example,
Caster can choose magic in skill menu to attack monsters.
A Website has been developed for providing the game information, updating the news about the game and allowing
the member to download the game. Both wiki and forum have also been included for members to discuss and give
opinions of the game.

Project Description
Save the Universe is a shooting action game in a 2D horizontal platform. The target audiences are 4–12 years old
children. The graphic used in the game is drawn in cutie style in order to attract the players. As a simple game, it
is designed with a simple control and interface.
Game Story
There are different universes in the cosmic space. Each universe is operated by a power generator in an unknown
place. If the machine is broken, the balance among each universe will be lost and all of the space time will be
confused. As a result, the cosmic space will also be destroyed eventually. Unfortunately, the power machine was
partly destroyed by an evil power. Just before the breaking of the machine, the core of the machine was split into 4
parts and fell into four different time periods of the Earth. The main character of the game, Ryan, is a space police.
He discovered that the time in each space was started to mess up due to the effects of poser machine components.
During the journey of the game, Ryan tried to chase the evil criminal from the space line and collected the missing
part of the power machine.
How to play
The goal of the game is to neutralize the entire enemies and to avoid the enemies’ attacks. The score will be increased
if an enemy is being killed. At the end of each stage, the space police needs to defeat the boss and gets back the
missing part of the machine.
Stages
There are four stages in the game:
• First stage, the Cretaceous period, is primeval forests. The enemies include dinosaurs such as Gastonia,
Quetzalcoatlus and the boss is a Tyrannosaurus. In this stage, Ryan can only use stone to fight against
them.
• Second stage, the Ancient periods, is western village and castle. Bats, spiders and witches will attack
the space police. Player can throw axe and the boss in this stage is a Vampire.
• Third stage, the 19th century WW2, is in the battle field of World War 2. The enemies include tanks,
soldiers, and combat planes. The main task of this stage is to destroy the boss of the enemies. Machine
gun is the only allowed weapon of this stage.
• Final stage, the Space, where the player meet the evil power. With a laser gun, he has to fright against
the evil poser and other enemies include U.F.O, aliens and spaceships in order to win the game.
Control
The game is controlled by the following keystrokes:
• Up – Character jumps
• Down – Character squads down
• Left – Character runs backward
• Right – Character runs forward
• Shift – Character can attack upward with the weapon
• Space – Character can attack forward with the weapon
Web Portal
A Web portal (developed by Joomla) will be set up for the game. The portal provides introduction, online discussion
and the news for the public. The players can discuss the game, express their views, and report bugs of the game
through the forum. Updated patches will be available for download from the portal.

Project Description
All societies need non-profit making organizations (NPMOs) to resolve the disparity between the rich and the poor.
The NPMOs, such as the Salvation Army and the Red Cross, provide services to the public with a low charge. Most of
the NPMOs share a common problem of lacking an effective computerized system in order to allocate their limited
resources in the best way.
The CRMS for Community Centre (CCC) is a customized CRMS (Customer Relationship Management System) tailormade to suit the needs of the NPMOs. To distinguish our proposed system and the CRMS in the market, it is crucial
to identify the objectives of the systems.
Project Objective
The objective of this project is to help organizations to achieve their missions. The scope is to establish and maintain
the relationship between the organization and the customer. Communication, such as contact, is a critical factor.
The following functions help to maintain correct and relevant customer information in order to start an effective
communication.
a)
Activity Management
Basic activity information, such as purpose, date and place, are included in the system. Moreover, restriction
and association are also included. Restriction refers to the rule that disallows customer from joining. Association
means the category it belongs to and its relationship between other activities.
b) Facility Management
Facility information, such as type and quantity are included. Rental records of customers must be contained to
analysis their habits.
c)
Case and Feedback Management
These functions are incoming messages from customer other than participation and rental records.
d) Customer Data Management
Personal information, such as name and contact number, is needed to identify a customer. Additional information,
like interest, talent, would help in predicting his habits. It is observed that customers of a community center
usually have health problem. Therefore, the system should be able to store the health status of customers which
is useful in predicting their needs and preferences.
The system provides customer analysis functions by integrating the above information. The following items listed
the functions of the analytical part:
• Customers are grouped into respective categories based on their preferences and habits. Users may make
specialized solutions for a particular category of customers who have the similar needs.
• The system will notice users taking any actions to maintain the current relationship with members who are not
active in participating activities or events.
• The system will suggest any related activities in the same category or at the upper level, based on the customer’s
individual participation records.
• The system will list popular and unpopular activities for users to evaluate the existing measurement based on
the integration of participation records.
• The system will generate statistical reports in time basis, such as members’ portfolios and participation reports
of different categories.

Project Description
Background
Mass Transit Railway Corporation (MTR Corporation) is one of the largest transport companies in Hong Kong.
The key mission of MTR Corporation Limited (MTR) is to develop and manage a world class railway, together with property and
other related businesses, to enhance the quality of life in Hong Kong.
At present, the control room at each station must always be manned by at least one staff member to monitor the status of
various equipment, such as lighting, escalators, lifts, and display boards, etc., through the use of the Station Management
System (SMS).
In order to make better use of the available resources and offer a better service, it is necessary to have a mobile system to help
the station operators to get access to SMS while they need to leave the station control room to perform their duties.
Projects objectives
mSMS is designed to provide more mobility and updated information to station operators and engineers.
The system consists of two modules – a Web-based server program and a Java Applet running on mobile devices such as
notebook computers and Personal Digital Assistants (PDA). The mobile devices are used by station operators and engineers
while the Web server is a bridge for connecting the Station Management System (SMS) and the mobile devices. The details of
the system are as follows:
Project Details
The new system can increase the work efficiency of the staff and minimize the time required to stay inside the station control
room. On the other hand, the new system can be used via any mobile devices without installing any extra software. It is because
the mobile devices will use a Web browser to receive the alarms via a Webpage. The system also provides control buttons via
the browser to send some control commands back to the servers.
mSMS mainly provides real-time information about the facilities and equipment that are installed inside the MTR stations. Being
a reliable system, it is essential to let station operators to retrieve the most up-to-date information as fast as possible in order
to increase the operational efficiency.
The followings are some details of the system:
• To provide a faster way of offering status information of various equipment to the manager when he is not staying inside
the station control room,
• To alert the station operators if there is any faulty equipment, and
• To inform the technical staff whether the equipment problems have been solved or not

Background
Nowadays, using internet to buy products is very common. It is very convenient for the people who are very busy or don’t want
to go out. A searching and purchasing engine is one of the main flows. As lots of Hong Kong people prefer to buy products on
the internet and receive the products at their home. Therefore, we would like to build up a searching and purchasing engine
to offer the advantages to the users.
The bookshop has database carrying information of different books. Users can input different information to find out the book
which they want and they can buy the book which is provided in the online bookshop. The user can register to login and get
an account to become a customer, so they can buy online.
Objective of the online bookshop
Basically, this web-based searching and application engine facilitates searching suitable books based on what books users want
to find. For example, if the users want to find a book, they can search it by typing the keywords. In the field of purchasing
application, the customers have to complete the application by giving certain information to be our member and making payment
through Internet. Therefore, the searching and booking engine is available for the users who want to buy books easily and
safely without going to the bookshop to find the books.
Online Bookshop System:
1. Searching part:
The search function is one of the important functions of our system. It provides the searching criteria to the users and it
can help them find the books that match the criteria they have chosen. The users can choose about criteria. And the system
will output the matching books even only one matching criteria.
2. Purchasing Part
Users need to login to the system by using their login names and passwords. After they login, they can use the system to
buy the books. Sometimes, users may want to cancel their pervious bookings.
3. Shopping Cart
After the users complete their shopping tour, they can review which books they have chosen, and the price of all products.
If the customers want to delete the item, they can click the cancel button as they like.
4. Administration Part
For the administration part, the administrator account can do lots of changes around the information of books. For instance,
administrator can add some new arrival books on the web site or editing or making changes of the details of the books. For
the management, the administrator can check the members order and the quality of the books stock. Administrator also
needs to confirm there are enough books in the stock.
5. Registration Part
For the registration part, users have to register account to log in for buying books, thanks to the security of purchasing.
When users have their own account, they can modify their profile by typing onto the web site. Those details of users account
will save in our database and other people can not know the details.
