The Institute of the Arts and Sciences and the Museo Eduardo Carrillo
invite you to a talk by internationally renowned artist Amalia Mesa-Bains
and a screening of the Museo's new 30 minute documentary
Eduardo Carrillo: A Life of Engagement.
Amalia Mesa-Bains is an internationally-renowned artist, scholar,
and curator. Throughout her career, Mesa-Bains has expanded
understandings of Latina/o artists’ references to spiritual practices and
vernacular traditions through her altar installations, articles, and
exhibitions. In 1992, she was awarded a Distinguished Fellowship
from the MacArthur Foundation. Her work has been shown at
institutions such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the
Whitney Museum of American Art at Phillip Morris, and the New
Museum.
Eduardo Carrillo was a founding faculty member at Oakes College at
UC Santa Cruz, a professor of art and a renowned painter and
muralist. His tenure at UCSC (1972- 1997) began in an era of intense
social change and initiated a wave of social consciousness and
commitment to re-envisioning diversity on the University campus.
Filmed over 4 years across California and in Baja California, Mexico,
the award winning documentary, A Life of Engagement, documents
the artist's relationship with his Mexican cultural heritage as he
negotiated the challenges first generation Americans faced during
the tumultuous social changes of the 60s and 70s. It features
commentary by Amalia Mesa- Bains.

The event is FREE and open to the public. Parking is available in the Performing Arts Lot for $4.
