Danceworks is a proud member of the United Performing Arts Fund. From Danceworks’ Executive Director Welcome, and thank you for joining us tonight! The chilly air may be arriving outside, but inside these doors you will find the warmth that results from a collaborative spirit—from guest artists Cadance Collective and the Tontine Ensemble to Dawn Springer and Kym McDaniel. We place relationships at the top of our priorities. Connection to others takes us deeper into ourselves and creates new ideas and inventions, lifting us to greater heights than we could ever experience alone. Connection is the very thing that strengthens our spirit and “performance.” And we want to connect with you! If you like what you see today, tell us about it, and why you like it; if not, we want to know that too. We’ve added talkbacks to help you connect more fully to the artists and the work. Does that enhance your experience? Tonight, the musicians will propel the dancers’ footsteps with live music, while guest choreographer Dawn Springer will make the footsteps themselves the music. In transforming Dreams of Flight from a solo work to ensemble, Dawn shifts our focus from individual to collective—from air to gravity—through the beauty of gesture, the repetition sometimes needed to be understood, and the tension that pushes us towards release into new heights of growth. Movement mirrors life. In 2015-16, as a board and staff, we look into the future with our own dreams of flight. A deeper understanding of our relationships and place in the community is the focus of each new fiscal year. We are celebrating our 10th anniversary of Mad Hot, and we hope to realize our dream of serving more 4th – 6th graders in our city who can benefit from the joy and success the program brings into our schools and families throughout Milwaukee. We dream of additional studio space as we add names to waiting lists for our classes. More dancing means more health throughout our community. We dream of growing our contributed revenue so we can, likewise, grow our service to the community. With that, we have added our first full time director of development—please join me in welcoming Linnéa Koeppel to the Danceworks team! We hope that when you receive our annual appeal, you will be a partner in helping us to make Milwaukee a city that will creatively overcome its challenges. May our flight move us from self to selfless, revealing the power in making connections that inspire us. Deborah Farris | Executive Director, Danceworks FROM DPC’S ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Footsteps, Shadows and Whispers is, by design, a mysterious opening to the Danceworks Performance Company 15-16 season. It is an invitation for DPC’s resident choreographers and interdisciplinary guest artists to explore the unknown, and for you to join us! Filmmaker Kym McDaniel brings a distinctive multisensory perspective to DPC, blending film, sound and live dance. Shadows climb the walls, and dancers are seen and unseen in her premiere, Night Light. Guest choreographer Dawn Springer brings footsteps to the forefront in setting her Dreams of Flight (2010) on DPC. This piece was originally a solo that she herself performed. It is now a group work, performed almost entirely in unison, and in total silence. This pared down approach brings attention to the immediacy and mystery of the moments of anticipation and calm. Gina Laurenzi is DPC’s newest resident choreographer with a penchant for intricate gesture, liquid physicality and intimate partnering. Her piece, Figment, explores relationships between dancers and their shadowy counterparts. In the first half of the concert, DPC member Christal Wagner premieres Hubris, a devilish frolic of a quartet set to the music of the Punch Brothers; and after intermission, Christal’s impeccable musicality is in the forefront again in Jitterbug Suite: A Memory, a haunting piece highlighting whispers of the past in her collaboration with The Cadance Collective. Christal is one of the three founding members of the group, along with flutist Emma Koi and cellist Alicia Storin. Finally, I’ve had the opportunity to reconnect with composer Allen Russell and the Tontine Ensemble (Paleontology of a Woman, 2014) to create a new work inspired by dreams and the juxtaposition of what is real, imagined and hyper real. Allen has created a graphic score that the musicians are improvising from to create a soundscape. The sound has become elastic—stretching or condensing to support and inspire surprising twists and turns in the dream world we’re creating together. Enliven the senses. Feel anticipation and calm. Imagine what is seen and unseen. Listen more intently, to discern the faintest whisper. Allow your reality to become elastic. This is Footsteps, Shadows and Whispers. I hope you will be taken in by it. With gratitude, Dani Kuepper | Artistic Director, DPC PROGRAM Danceworks Performance Company: Melissa Anderson, Alberto Cambra, Kim Johnson, Dani Kuepper, Gina Laurenzi, Liz Zastrow Licht, Liz Tesch, Christal Wagner, Jöelle Worm, Andrew Zanoni.
