The school year is now back in session! The Greater Belen Chamber of Commerce is extremely grateful to State Employee Credit Union for once again sponsoring our New Educator’s luncheon in August. We appreciate all the teachers and administrators that were able to join us that day as we kicked off the 2016-2017 school year. Please come out and show your love of your community in these events – it is with all of our participation that has our community flourish and be successful. The GBCC is working on a full day of wonderful activities, vendors and bands for our Rio Abajo Becker Street Festival on September 24. Please come and join us for a full day of fun – Live bands all day, Al Hurricane, Jr., Keith Sanchez and the Moonthieves, Kevin Michael Band, Howard Stansell Band and DJ Ragon, poker bike run, Hot Air Balloon Glow, Dance contents, a huge classic/custom car show, 75-Foot Water Slide, Wellness Fair, Lots of food and non-food vendors, a 43 inch TV Giveaway to end the night! The huge turnout and response at our New Educator’s Luncheon Shake Rattle and Roll, Our Educators Rock!!! was indicative of this. You are so appreciated!!! We salute and honor our educators. They work so hard and mold our future generations. A special thanks to State Employees Credit Union as our Title Sponsor once again. The GBCC- sponsored Valencia County Fair Parade was another indicator of the community’s support. Wow!!! A special thanks to our judges: Luz Chavez, Honorary Member of GBCC, Dolores Padilla, Pilot Club of Belen and Rita Stump , President of the Pilot Club of Belen. We honored Valencia County’s First Responders and Veterans as our Parade Marshal reflecting the theme of this year’s parade: Honoring our Veterans, First Responders and Police. A Perfect Look took first place for the Commercial category, BHS Cheerleaders for School Groups, Land of Enchantment Miniature Horses for Horse Groups and Concerned Veterans for America for Non-Profit!!! Thank you to all who came out and participated!!! We had close to 50 entrees. Now to our largest event of the year: Rio Abajo Becker Street Festival. It is always scheduled for the last Saturday in September and this year’s is on track to be the best ever. We have added new events and have improved existing ones such as the Classic and Custom Car Show and added the 75 foot water slide, a Wellness Fair and brought back our Poker Bike Run!!! It all begins at 10:00am and runs until 9:00 pm. We will be offering a free raffle for a new 43’ Flat Screen and will be having a Dance Contest for Two Step, Swing, Line Dance and Ranchera!!! Great prizes for these contests!!! Award winning Black Smuggler’s and Jaramillo Winery and Fat Sats will be offering their wines and beer selections at a huge Beer and Wine Garden with a common seating area. Also the Balloon Glow will be going strong at 8:00pm. This year our entertainment line up will include NM’s own Al Hurricane, Jr., Keith Sanchez and the Moonthieves, Kevin Michael Band, Howard Stansell Band, DJ Ragon!!! The best part of Rio Abajo Becker Street Festival is that it is free admission and jam packed with great events and vendors all day long. Come out and support it. We will continue to accept vendor applications until the week of the event as well as sponsorships. The success of these events is imperative to the continued operations of the Chamber. As long as we are able to be successful in these fundraising efforts, membership dues can remain a great value. Thank you for all you do. ( They had advertised five but were able to award six because of a pilot classmate and friend of Tammy's, who graduated Helicopter training together, stopped by while training in Albuquerque and he and his wife made a $500. donation to the scholarship program!) Also, they recently submitted a Great Blocks on Mainstreet Grant that will fund shovel ready plans for revitalizing our 1st from the Railrunner station to 2nd street on Becker Ave. The grant amount would be for up to $75,000.00 towards these plans. They recently reached a 4 Star Through FOCUS. On top of offering free PreK for 3 year olds. Along with Sandra’s sister Melissa Reeves with little learners in Los Lunas.
