ABOUT THE FISHER HOUSE FOUNDATION
Fisher House Foundation is best known for a network of comfort homes
where military and veterans’ families can stay at no cost while a loved one is
receiving critical care.
These homes are located at major military and VA medical centers nationwide,
close to the medical center or hospital they serve. Fisher Houses have up to
21 suites, with private bedrooms and baths. Families share a common kitchen,
laundry facilities, a warm dining room and an inviting living room. Fisher House
Foundation ensures that there is never a lodging fee. Since inception, the program
has saved military and veterans’ families an estimated $235 million in out of
pocket costs for lodging and transportation. Over 22,000 families stayed at a
Fisher House last year, and that number continues to grow each year as Fisher
House Foundation builds new houses at VA and military medical centers with
the greatest need.
Fisher House Foundation also operates the Hero Miles program, using donated
frequent flyer miles to bring family members to the bedside of injured service
members, as well as the Hotels for Heroes program using donated hotel points
to allow family members to stay at hotels near medical centers without charge.
The Foundation also manages a grant program that supports other military
charities and scholarship funds for military children, spouses and children of
fallen and disabled veterans.
For more information about the Fisher House Foundation, please visit
www.fisherhouse.org.

is good medicine.

WELCOME
Welcome to the 10th Annual Support Our Heroes Gala!
On behalf of Chesapeake Support Our Heroes, Welcome! And thank you for
joining us this evening. Our mission is simple: demonstrate our commitment
and provide care to our wounded service members and their families by raising
funds to support the Fisher House Foundation.
Tonight’s gala is our tenth annual fundraiser and our theme is “A World of
Care.” We are taking this opportunity to highlight five of the many areas of
the world where Fisher House Foundation provides support to our military
and their families.
We have a fun-filled night in store for you! Have your Passport stamped
at each of our stations (Texas, Germany, Deep South, Mid-Atlantic, United
Kingdom, Heartland, and Western USA), while enjoying food and drinks typical
of those area. There are pictures and information about the Fisher House
facilities and services provided in each region.
Take the opportunity to participate in tonight’s traditional and silent auctions,
enjoy the entertainment and take time to listen to the program.
Any of our committee members will be happy to talk to you about supporting
our fundraising efforts for the Fisher House Foundation. There are so many
ways to assist -- whether it is a bake sale, a 5K run or a concert in the park.
Some of this year’s fundraisers included Olivia’s Lemonade Stand and the local
Lion’s Club “Cycling for Heroes.”
I would like to take this moment to mention Diane Carnes and MG Harry
Greene. They both steadfastly supported our efforts on behalf of the Fisher
House Foundation during the last decade. Diane was one of the “Founding
Mothers” of our gala and MG Greene was always there to support us in our
efforts. It’s easy to believe they are smiling with us tonight as we come together
yet again to support their beloved Fisher House Foundation.
9
WELCOME
Thanks again to each and every one of you for joining us tonight and many
thanks for supporting our nation’s wounded heroes and their families. I especially
want to thank our corporate, military and government supporters as well as
our very special volunteers. The effort they put into making this event a success
is truly “from the heart.” So to them I extend our most heartfelt thanks.
Enjoy this evening’s festivities!

DIANE ROSE WHINFIELD CARNES
Diane Carnes passed away peacefully at home on
August 14th and both the Monmouth and Aberdeen
Proving Ground will miss her. She served as the
Treasurer of the Fort Monmouth Chapter of AFCEA
(Armed Forces Communications Electronics Association)
for 25 years and was the Registrar for the AFCEA
Monthly Luncheons at Gibbs Hall as well as Registrar
of the Annual C4ISR Symposium and the State of
CECOM annual luncheon. Her numerous citations and awards from AFCEA
included AFCEAN of the Year, AFCEAN of the Quarter and the Dandelion
Award. She also served on the Board of the AUSA (Association of the United
States Army) Fort Monmouth Chapter as Editor of the quarterly newsletter.
Diane was a founding committee member of the Fort Monmouth “Support
Our Heroes” Gala, a fund raiser for The Fisher House Foundation, Inc., for
which this gala has become part of that tradition, serving as Registrar and
event planning.
Diane was awarded the Silver Wahatchee from the Signal Corps Regimental
Association for her years of service to the United States Signal Corps. She
served on the committee of the annual Field Artillery St. Barbara’s Day Dinner
Dance and is a recipient of the Molly Pitcher Award for her countless hours of
dedication to the association.
A Disney fan, Diane happily traversed the parks at Walt Disney World on
yearly vacations enjoying her favorite rides: Space Mountain, Splash Mountain
and Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster.
13
DIANE ROSE WHINFIELD CARNES
Diane loved her days at the beach as a member of Driftwood Cabana Club
(Cabana 224) in Sea Bright, NJ, counting the days to Beach Club Opening. She
enjoyed planning the menus for weekend dinners at the Cabana, surrounded by
her friends and family.
Diane enjoyed her regular “Jersey Girl” lunches, sadly less and less often as the
Fort Monmouth BRAC was implemented and the Jersey Girls relocated and
retired.
Diane leaves, her husband Edward L. Carnes, and her children, Phil and his wife
Rachel Carnes, Tinton Falls, Susan and her husband Hugh Bremmer, Howell, NJ
and Eddie Carnes, Tinton Falls and her adored grandsons, Stevie Bremmer and
Seamus Carnes. Diane was lovingly assisted by her family, her friends and the
staff of St. Barnabas Hospice.
Everyone will remember Diane’s smile and quick wit, but most of all, her
willingness to help and the countless hours of volunteer time to help the
community, military and civilian, grow together.

FALLEN HERO TABLE
This small table …
… honors the many members of our armed forces – our heroes -- who
answered the call of duty but were unable to return home. It is deliberately
placed before our nation’s colors as a special place of honor.
… symbolizes the presence of their loving spirit; they will never be forgotten.
… is set and reserved for one to honor each of our missing and fallen
loved ones.
… is round to represent the everlasting concern for those missing and
fallen comrades.
The white tablecloth … symbolizes the purity of our heroes’ intention to
respond to their country’s call to arms.
The single red rose … reminds us of the life and love of each hero and the
sacrifices that they made for this country.
The yellow ribbon ... tied so prominently on the vase, symbolizes remembrance
for the families and loved ones who keep the memories of our brothers and
sisters alive.
17
FALLEN HERO TABLE
The solitary candle … stands proud, straight, and tall … just like our comrades
and symbolizes the ultimate sacrifice that our fallen comrades and their families have made to preserve our precious freedom.
The slice of lemon on the plate … reminds us of their bitter fate.
The salt upon the table … symbolizes the tears shed by families as they have
endured the sorrow of their loved ones’ fate.
The inverted glass … symbolizes that our heroes are with us in spirit but
cannot raise a glass to toast with us tonight.
The chair … leans forward against the table and represents a reserved space
for each of our heroes.
Please take a moment this evening to remember these brave men and women
who have made “the ultimate sacrifice.”
We also ask that you keep their families and loved ones in mind tonight as we
continue our cause to support the Fisher House Foundation’s mission to provide a “home away from home” for military families so that they can be near
their loved ones during hospitalizations for illness, disease, or injury.
Thank you for your support!
Sincerely,
The Board Members of Chesapeake Support Our Heroes
The Committee for the 2014 Support our Heroes Gala
