I was shooting for 3:20 and was there after 20 (ran the first 20 with Cormac) but really cramped up over the last 5 miles. Granted it was probably pushing 80 degrees but I was still a bit disappointed that I didn't break 3:20. Actually we were on a 3:16-3:17 pace but there was going to be some slowdown occurring. I took one S-cap at the start, another about an hour into the race and a third about 90 minutes later. Looking back I probably should have taken more -- Mary used 6 during the race. And we haven't exactly been exposed to warm weather running this year. That said, I really hate cramping and the last 5 miles were hard mentally. While I was getting a little tired I was pretty sure I could have kept up an 8 minute pace, which would have put me right around 3:20. On the bright side, I was a little faster than last year when it was better conditions. And, last year I followed up Newport with my PR at Sauvie Island when we had unusually cool/overcast conditions. So, who knows what it will bring this year. Also, I was concerned about the knee pain that I had over the last 10K at Cap City a few weeks ago but I didn't feel anything today. And the best thing about the race and weekend was the fantastic company of my wonderful friends down here in Newport. Mary, Cliff, Judy, Betsy, and Cormac were great company and made the weekend even more fun than usual. Truly a fun weekend. Next up will be another long training run at the Vancouver USA Marathon followed by Sauvie Island on July 4th. I'm not sure what my goal will be on July 4th since it is totally dependent upon the weather. I'll, of course, be back to Newport next year when it is scheduled to be my 100th road marathon (I've also got 4 ultras thrown in which I'm not counting in the 100). At the end of the awards ceremony today, I requested bib #100 from the RDs and they said no problem -- I just need to follow up with them. And Newport is going high-tech next year with chip timing. I think Boston is putting pressure on races to go with chip timing. They are going to keep the cap at 900 for now but I have a feeling they will bump it up in the following years. As I have always said, if you haven't run this race you really should. It is a great small event in a wonderful location put on by really nice folks. And, for the second year in a row, the medals are glass ones, designed and made locally -- very nice. http://www.marathonmaniacs.com 5 DEO and Jessica Montoya Rock N Roll San Diego Marathon (6/5): Hector Aleman, Ashley Andersen, John "I'm on my way" Breding, Pony Express, Greg Durnin, Ed "Mad Hatter-Fancy Pants" Ettinghausen, Carol Fabian, Tom Fabian, Noel "Knees Hurt" Garibay, N'Gai Gold, Intisar Hamidullah, Matthew Hamidullah, Maria Hernandez, Tom Hosner, Michelle Isaak, DEO, "Da Do Run" Ron Kalich, Emily Knudson, Michelle Ladcani, Peter Lamb, John 'Oksie' Lazaro, Meg "Chuck" Lurie, Alan "KIDLAT" Maravilla, Dan Margolis, Steve Metcalf, Adam Miller, Jacob Morris, Carlos "Team FinJonah" Murillo, Tim Nave, Tony "Endorphin Dude" Nguyen, Mark Niblo, Lynn Oberman, Karen Osborn, Kathy "Rad Queen" Pryor, Melissa Rankin, Aaron Redinger, Shanan Redinger, Joseph "Jo Jo Starbucks" Reilly, Tyler Rich, Silver Rivas, "Lyle, Lyle Crocodile" Robertson, Erin Ruyle, Shirley Shaw, Louie "Lu-E the Jet" Soriano, Joseph "The Marathon Show" Taricani, Cindy Tolman, Shen Turner, Jimmy Waki, Gaye Walter, Steve Wisner, Ely Yaron Shelley Kincaid-Filbey and Joe Taricani Steve Hernandez and Jessica Montoya http://www.marathonmaniacs.com 6 Karen Wang North Olympic Discovery Marathon (6/5): Liz Allen, Laura Coburn, Doug Dominey, Elizabeth Ellis, Deb Evdemon, Earl Fenstermacher, Andy Fritz, Susan Glesne, Ginger Gruber, Claudia Hansen, Sharon "Run That Sh*t" Hendricks, Laura Johnson, Jon "Coconutboy" Mahoney, Shoney Mahoney, Ruthie Meraz, Kate Merrill, Barney, Kevin Murray, Lisa Ord, Mike Pruyne, Bill Ralph, Jody Reed, Michelle Schall, Shannon Schulz, Tom Scott, Terry Sentinella, Michael Shiach, Richard "Obiwan" Stewart, Steve Supkoff, Cindy Tolman, Steve "Marathon Freak" Walters, Karen Wang, Larry Wasson, Julie Whitcraft, Lisa Wood, Prez Steven Yee Doug Dominey Ruthie Meraz Liz Allen Jody Reed Bill Ralph HALF-M AR ATHON CR AZY Marathon Maniacs running half marathons… YES, it’s true! It was one of those states that captivate the imagination for everyone. This time, it was my turn. I was fortunate to find a cheap enough airfare months earlier and I was on my way to my happy place and state #15 on my quest for the 50 States. The course itself I found out ran along the scenic trails of Anchorage. You would not know you were running in Anchorage or even Alaska, unless you saw signage around. The mountain landscape was breathtakingly beautiful and worth the price of admission. It was a small enough marathon, which had just over 4,300 runners total for all their events, and just over 900 marathon finishers. There were lots of marathoners, maniacs, and 50 Staters, along with a throng of Team and Training purple shirts that seem to flood the entire race field. It was a perfect day to run a marathon. Race weekend started off awesome, when I arrived at 5am in Anchorage from a red eye out of Honolulu. Couldn’t sleep due to be squished in between 2 XL people in coach. Horrible. But anyway, we gathered together in a restaurant for breakfast to kick off race weekend and that made me smile. The expo was held in a large conference room inside the Sheraton Anchorage hotel, but you would not call it an expo. Once you picked up your bib, there was nothing really to look and buy. It was a real disappointment. It was a fun day hanging out with 10 Star Maniac Carol “Ponytail” Earles, who was on the verge of finishing up her 1st circuit of the 50 States, and her daughter, DeeDee, who qualified for the 50 States Club with 10 states. Needless to say that this weekend was one of my best marathon weekends ever. The weather forecast for race morning was in the 50’s, which was near perfect for the marathon. With the days being at 20 hours of daylight, we had to sleep with everything dark in our rooms, or we risk going nuts – if we were not already. It didn’t rain at all, which was great. The pre race dinner that I set up went pretty well. We ate at the Glacier Brewhouse, which had some good reviews on Yelp, so I decided to give them a try. They were known in Alaska for great Italian, so that was the perfect background for a Maniac meal or two. It was great to meet up with other Maniacs / 50 Staters. Perhaps, I’ll be seeing them down the road in another state, so it’s always great to network. Good times and delicious food. Race morning. There were oodles of Marathon Maniacs that morning, along with the bundles of Team in Training purple. I felt like a kid in a candy store that morning. It was simply fabulous. After a few group photos, we lined up in the makeshift corrals. I then got a random nosebleed. It was probably because of Alaska and the new environment. I learned in the early miles that I don’t do trail running and it showed. After hitting the 10K mark and that off road course made it a lot more challenging than I realized. Along the course, I met a few dozen people who happened to be first time marathoners, who are with Team in Training. Once you ask a Maniac how much marathons they do, those Team in Training folk, normally would be like, OMG! It happens every time. Met up with another marathon virgin in the later stage of the marathon course and she was asking me a lot of questions about post race recovery. I tried to answer as best that I could, but my mind was kind of somewhere in between the current mile and the finish line. I’m glad that I did not run with my camera that morning, since I would have crossed the finish line way slower than I did. One of the few sights I saw along the course was Mount McKinley at mile 16 ish. It was a sight to see. On my mind was bears and moose, which seem to be out there when you least expect it. Fortunately, there were no close encounters, but I always wondered what if… The finish line was on the track of West Lake High School. After crossing the finish line, the announcer dude announced my arrival and my hometown & state. It was great to have not given up at mile 11 when that was what I was thinking going through that rough patch of rock covered trail. After the race, fellow Maniac Haywood Crowder (#1699) crossed the line and we limped back to the bus to take us back to the downtown hotels. After a nice ice bath at the hotel, Haywood , #1398 Aaron Braunstein, and I treated ourselves to a nice celebratory dinner at Orso’s. The ribeye topped with feta cheese was to die for. HIGHLY recommended!! What a great race Alaska had put on. I would certainly be back, but not for a few years, since I want to finish my 1st circuit before I turn 40. State #15 in the books and 30th marathon overall. It was great to have seen everyone that weekend! http://www.marathonmaniacs.com 15 Post-race Maniacs Angie Whitworth Pace Utah Valley Marathon (6/11): Teresa Baker, Bill, John Bozung, Kevin "downhill" Emery, Patrick Finney, Galen Garrison, Eric Jensen, Rebecca Kandt, Bill Mandler, Sue "Italian Stallion" Mantyla, Valerie Merges, Kurt "The Kidd" Neilan, James "Hurricane" Norris, Sue Oldroyd, John Oster, April Ritter, Rian Rosenthal, Bob Satko, Angie Whitworth Pace Pre-race Maniacs Rebecca Kandt Sue Mantyla Kurt Neilan While we are still working out the details for the MM Reunion at the Fox Cities Marathon, here is a bit of news from the Race Director: Marathon Maniacs can get special colored bibs for all the Marathon Maniacs that sign up for the Full or the Half Marathon. She is on a mission to run a marathon in all 50 states (plus DC) in 52 weeks. She is doing this to raise money for First Descents (a charity for cancer patients). She started her mission on Jan 30, 2011 and plans to finish on Jan 7, 2012. She has a web site and a Facebook, so be sure to check it out and support this Maniac! Maryann Ramirez Sandy Stiner FROM THE EDITOR… Tony Nguyen and Steve Walters The month of June was a special one for me. I started the month off with a double then followed that by running the Lake Youngs Ultra, which was my 52nd in 50 weeks, giving me 10 stars! I followed that by running a very hard half marathon and the Vancouver USA Marathon and ended the month with the Rock N Roll Seattle Marathon. It’s been a fun year, thus far! As we enter the second half of the year, I’m refocusing my goals. I reached the 10 star level, and now will focus on half marathons through the summer. I personally find goals to be a great motivator. If you don’t have goal set for yourself, I encourage you to consider setting one. Just make sure your goal is realistic. So many set goals that are too high and then when they can’t reach end get discouraged. A REMINDER IS SENT WITH THE MONTHLY E-FLASH AND SOME OF YOU ARE OVERDUE!! http://www.marathonmaniacs.com 25 RHETORICAL REVELATIONS AND W(RITES)… FROM THE RAMBUNCTIOUS REV Hiya PREZ!!!! How are YOU??? Man, I’m doing GREAT, and I’ll tell you why! It is JULY 1st, and that’s the day we make New Year’s Resolutions!!!! I’m so excited. I LOVE new beginnings!!! {What? January 1? Ohhhh. Well… this still works.} I’ve got a riddle for you! Now, NO peeking to the end. Think, Prez, THINK! BESIDES making good friends, you know, like good ol’ Hollywood, and Tony the Tiger, and Roger Mac, and those Diva girls, and the Brazilians for crying out loud, what’s the next best part about running marathons? Come on, Prez, think this through…. I will tell you a bunch of things other people say, but they are only almost right, Prez, and then I will give you the ARGGH! (The “ARGGH,” my dear Yee, is the “Authoritative Reverend’s Gem of Genius in Hindsight.” If you read my letters long enough and memorize all of the ARGGH’s, I promise you, you will become like a guru, and when people come up to you, they will pause, and tilt their heads in awe, and bewilderment, and stuff like that. Happens to me all the time.) Ok, number one wrong answer most frequently given? FINISHING. It’s true that seems to be the goal, and we get a nice medal and a bottle of water, but man, at the finish we are sweatier and uglier than Larry the Cable Guy, we are hungry, tired, probably achy here and there, crabby even (not you Yee, but you are kind of special in that), and we are sweatier and uglier than Larry the Cable Guy. (I know, I said that twice, but that part lingers, man, it lingers.) Wrong answer number Two: Adding to our Records! I must admit, this is a real, solid, almost right answer, for some of the Maniacs. I know one lady who celebrated her 100th marathon by running a 100-mile race. Very cool. And there are folks in the newsletter with their New Star Levels, which is pretty neat! (I personally still love saying “I’m an iridium,” just to watch people take a step backwards). A select few have run so much they are in the Maniac Hall of Fame. Whoa. I can’t say I know what that feels like. I would need to keep track of my runs clear through four or five reincarnations, and with my luck, mixed in there I would get to be a cocker spaniel (keeping the lovable side of me going) and probably a dolphin (sleek, handsome, athletic). So, even though I remain 99 one-hundred-milers from enshrinement, I have talked to the Hall of Famers, and though rightly proud, they admit the accomplishment is not alone what gets them out there again. How about the run itself? Especially on a pretty course? The cliffs of Big Sur are spectacular, as are the sights at Crater Lake, or Catalina and Mount Desert Islands, and dozens of others. BUT! When we are running the roads it is contradictory to stop and gaze at purple ice plants if one is trying to avoid the dreaded PW (“Personal Worst,” rookies). So, the run itself? Not a bad choice, but… all that tension (“Look! No run! Aw, look!”) just rules this one out. It must be the training then, right? The training adds discipline, character, and health to our lives, and opportunity for meditation for the soul. We get a break in the day for peaceful listening to birds singing, or Ipod music creating a little boogieing. Ahhh, this is sweet. But nope! Training means there is still the matter of some serious effort involved, not always easy and pleasant to pull off. Give up Prez? Well, here it is, the number one Reason why we run marathons: Those glorious, anything-great-can-happen-today, everybody’s happy and smells good, looks good, feels good, and is thinking good thoughts when? In those wonderful minutes right before the start of the marathons! Man, those may be the happiest minutes in life! Prez! You know what I am thinking then? Hope. Possibility. Today could be THE day. Today COULD be a PR day! I don’t know! Maybe! Maybe not! But Maybe! Maybe we catch Hollywood! (Ok, maybe YOU catch Hollywood.) Or maybe today the feet will have us floating past those mile markers that … have two digits. Who knows? Maybe today! And the course will either be new and exciting, or familiar and comfortable, an old friend! And all the logistics of getting to the start on time are done! We’re ready to go. And over there is Loopy, and Action, and Keely, and Macon his ownself! But the number one reason why the last couple of minutes before the marathon is the best part of running marathons? For those precious few minutes, buddy, it doesn’t hurt yet. Fantastic. Then some knucklehead says “Go.” Sigh. Yesterday is done. We are gifted with the opportunity to take new beginnings today and do all we can with them. Might not always be in running. Good possibilities are in front of us, no matter how old we are, what condition we are in, or what struggles, some phenomenally difficult, we yet face. Heroic relatives and friends even in profound difficulties, when still given life to live, lived it, right in front of me. What a blessing to experience. Kind of like you three fellows. Thanks again for all you’ve been, are, and do. Luvya, Rev [email protected] http://www.marathonmaniacs.com 26
