It wakes up the brain cells.”— cells.”—Dr. Seuss 2015 OACE Volunteer Award Winners Lifetime Volunteers Lifetime Volunteers Loren & Shirley Wieden Brad & Amy Vitosh Wieden’s Community Activities and Service throughout the years: Both Graduated from Odell. Loren served in the military during the Korea war from 1950-54. He has been a member of the Legion since 1954, has been the commander and vice commander and is now a permanent member. Loren was in the Odell Fire Department for 31 years and Odell’s Mayor for 8 years. He was a carpenter in Odell for 20 years. Shirley has been a member of the Legion Auxiliary since 1994. Shirley and Loren were members of the Odell Community Club from 1979-1992 and ran the grocery store during that same 13 year period. They are both members of OWTC. The Wieden’s have been married for 56 years and are members of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Odell, where Loren has been a member since 1938 and Shirley since 1949. Congratulations to a well deserving couple! Brad and Amy Vitosh’s Community Activities and Service throughout the years: Brad has been part of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Odell as an Elder, Trustee, and volunteer of the Easter Breakfast committee, Craft Fair & Diller Picnic Food Booths. He was the main carpenter and in charge of design on the recent renovation of the church. Brad has been a member of the Volunteer Fire Department since 1984 and is currently serving as President and has served as Chief, and Secretary. He also held safety programs in coordination with the School. Brad designed and built Youth Leadership Lance Lawton the track in Odell with the help of youth volunteers and has volunteered his time spraying the lines on the track for the past 10 years. He has been a coach for the Wymore Legion Jr. & Sr. Baseball teams and a coach for boys and girls elementary and Jr. High basketball teams. Brad is a past president of the Summer Ball Assoc., he is a member of OACE and the Jaycees and a volunteer at Rice Lodge, Consignment Sales and a lot of fund raising for the Fireman’s Fund and youth activities. Amy Vitosh has been an LYF Leader and Elder’s Wife and is a current member of the choir at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Odell. She was a past member of OWBC and Jaycees were she served numerous offices. She is a member of OACE where she has volunteered at Community Christmases, & Craft Fairs. Amy has volunteered with Easter Egg Hunts, Consignment Sales, and Fireman’s Fundraising. Amy is an important member of the community. She is energetic and always has a kind word and smile for everyone around her. Congratulations Brad and Amy! Lance Lawton is the recipient of the Youth Leadership Award because he is reliable, respectful and involved in both the communities of Odell and Diller. He is an excellent student and good role model. Lance has helped with community Days, the Diller Picnic, and attended many community meetings and activities as a past DOSADA Core Member. Lance is very involved in school and cares about the future of our school and communities. Lance is also an active member of the Youth Group at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Diller. “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing’s going to get better, it’s not!” — Dr. Seuss Page 3 Youth Volunteer Award Friend of the Community Girl Scout Cadette #20483 Ken Zarybnicky Ken has been a constant figure at Odell’s Run for Fun. He helps with set up and helps during the race. Most importantly Ken has donated many prizes to all Troop 20483 received the Youth Volunteer Award from OACE by contestants of the race, including doing several activities. Including helping with the Odell Run for Fun glasses, medals and trophies. Without and being in charge of Inflateables at Odell Days. The troop has also him the Annual Run for Fun would helped with projects in Beatrice, such as picking up recyclables and not be the same. Thank you Ken and hanging up door decorations at the Good Samaritan Home. They Congratulations! have helped set up for Odell’s Community Christmas , and helped in Diller with the Picnic concession stands, trash pick up after the Mud OACE Lifetime Service Award Drives, Diode Diaper Drive and cleaning of the Diller Museum. Jill Scheele has been part of OACE since the start of it in 2007, serving as President or Treasurer for most of Mary Jo Bures those years. Without Jill many events in our community would not happen. Mary Jo receives this award Each year she has helped plan and run as recognition for all of her years and time spent organiz- the Volunteer Appreciation Meal, Run ing the Odell Craft Fair. She for Fun, Odell Community Days and Silent Auction, Odell Craft Show, has been an integral part in Odell Community Christmases, past this huge fundraiser for our Summer Picnics, and Halloween ParCommunity. Mary Jo sends out letters to crafters, takes ties. Most importantly , Jill has hancare of advertising, setting up dled OACE’s finances with expertise for the show and making sure and through her planning and detailed it runs smoothly. Thank you work, OACE has given back thousands of dollars to the community, it’s Mary Jo! Your efforts are citizens and it’s youth. Jill also volunappreciated! OACE Volunteer of the Year teers her time as a Diller-Odell School Board member and the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church High School Youth Group Sponsor. Thank you Jill and Congratulations! Pg. 4 “Today I shall behave, as if this is the day I will be remembered.” — Dr. Seuss OACE UPDATES OACE will be adjusting their meeting schedule OACE 2014 MEETING March 16, May 18, July 20, August 17, October 19 Odell Cookie 4H Club News: Melina Kostal, CoNews reporter: The Odell Cookies met on February 15, 2015. The next meeting will be on March 8th at corky canvas in Lincoln. There, club members & November 16 will be decorating canvases and having a short meeting while 7 pm at the Odell Legion MARK YOUR CALENDARS! waiting for the paint to dry. Other activities at the February meeting included the sweetheart gift exchange and decorating cupcakes. The Odell cookies also discussed their upcoming 60th anniversary. They are planning to have a party on April 11th, time and place are still being discussed, but look out for upcoming news. They will also be selling anniversary t-shirts (see ad below). The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Gage County would like to extend an invitation to the community to join in the fight against cancer. An informal meeting will be held Tuesday, March 3, from 5:306:15 p.m. at the Beatrice Community Hospital cafeteria. The Relay committee is inviting people in the community whose lives have been effected by cancer or who are interested in learning more about getting involved in the event. Volunteers as well as walkers are needed to make this successful. Sponsorships are available. Businesses wishing to be included may contact Jackie Kimes, sponsor chair, at 402-228-6506. Sponsor names will be included on the Relay T-shirts. This year's Relay For Life will be held Saturday, April 25, from noonmidnight at the Gage County Fairgrounds.. Last year, around 400 people participated in the Relay for Life of Gage County and raised over $60,000. Survivors are the honorees of the annual event. Any area cancer survivor who has not received an invitation to the April 25 complimentary meal, courtesy of Beatrice Community Hospital and Health Center, may contact Lorrie Stierwalt at 402-239-6073. Luminarias, honoring all persons who have ever battled the disease, are available for a $10 donation. These can be decorated by families if they choose to do so. The lit luminaries, annually numbering over 1,000, line the walking track of the relay. The event is also an opportunity for area persons and groups to share their talents by providing entertainment, both musical and games. Families will be notified of formal acceptance following the deadline. Page 6 Student of the Month The Diller-Odell January Student of the Month is Madeline Parde. Madeline always gets her work completed in a timely manner, participates in classroom activities and is helpful to her classmates. She also uses pleasant manners. Madeline is the daughter of Tanner and Ann Parde. Congratulations Madeline! Dr. Seuss Week is March 22-6 at the Elementary. Page 7 “Why fit in when you were born to stand out?” — Dr. Seuss Art Students’ Work Displayed at Conference Show The 2015 Pioneer Conference Art Show was February 6th and 7th with Southern High School hosting the event. Diller-Odell student Justice Wolbert placed 1st in ceramics for her Leopard Box and Bryan Meyer placed 3rd in ceramics for his Blue Fish. Hundreds of pieces were on display and the show was huge a success! Congratulations are extended to all of the conference winners! At left is Justice Wolbert’s ceramics project that won 1st! Jr. High Spelling Bee: 10 Diller-Odell students from 7th & 8th grades participated in the Jefferson County Spelling Bee held at Meridian High School on Monday, February 9. Moving on to the 2nd round were Bryston Warren and Mackenzie Vitosh. Bryston placed 10th at the Bee.
