Letter to Our Community
Dear Friends,
Welcome to our 2011 report. Its theme
of travel reflects our way of working
together as fellow travelers toward our
shared goal of community betterment.
Each year, our journey continues, and
we prepare well to meet challenges
while also responding with flexibility
to unexpected turns and discoveries.
We see the familiar in new ways,
exhilarated by each others’ fresh
perspectives, both broad views and
close-up encounters.
For example, our Early Childhood
Leadership Initiative demonstrates
our new, proactive, issue-driven
approach to grantmaking. We found
common ground among ten of our
grantees working in arenas that
influence the lifelong success of our
youngest learners. By pooling money
from several donor funds, we made
grants that expand and improve these
programs and connect them into an
informal coalition. Their collaboration
underscores the well-documented
importance of a child’s first 1,000 days
of life in developing skills that can
lead to college success and a productive
adulthood. This grantmaking initiative
is also galvanizing private-and-public
sector support for similar programs to
strengthen early childhood education in
Greater Worcester.
Another 2011 program that recognizes
and builds on existing strengths is our
new Professional Advisors’ Network.
Financial advisors have been friends of
the Foundation from its start, valuing
its resilience, flexibility and efficiency as
a vehicle to meet clients’ philanthropic
and financial objectives. Now we are
engaging advisors to actively recruit
new donors, drawn by our deep
knowledge of the community and the
opportunity to create an endowed,
named fund with $10,000 that honors a
loved one or serves a cherished cause in
perpetuity.
You are joining us on a great journey.
Spread the word. Each year we
continue to make new discoveries and
reap new rewards on behalf of our
community. Find out about our 2011
accomplishments in the following
pages.

Highlights of 2011
Celebrating our 37th year, the Foundation remains faithful to the vision of its founders, whose experiment in
a distinctly neighborly and self-reliant model of philanthropy took hold and spread deep roots. Here are some of
our highlights from 2011.
• Introduced the Early Childhood Leadership Initiative of the Grants Task Force, a proactive investment in local nonprofits advancing pre-K through college readiness that will foster mutual learning as well as public/
private sector support.
• Continued strong growth in new donors by adding 23 new funds, bringing the total of named funds to 470.
• Received $1.7 million in gifts from donors and $1.6 million in agency fund deposits, sustaining 2010 performance.
• Furthered outreach and donor education resources by designing and inaugurating the Foundation’s new interactive web site.
•
Established the Professional Advisors Network to expand relationships with these critical partners, who value the Foundation as a vehicle to meet clients’ financial and philanthropic goals and engage new donors.

New Funds Created in 2011
Camp Putnam Agency Fund
At Camp Putnam, caring and sharing
are core values, a connection to nature is
key to personal development, and every
child deserves access to the summer camp
experience regardless of ability to pay.
These philosophies have guided the organization for over 60
years, and this fund helps support it for decades to come.
Mary Ann Binkoski Scholarship Fund
Mary Ann Binkoski devoted her career to
the youth of the city. She was an educator in
the Worcester Public Schools for 36 years,
including 14 years as principal of Grafton
Street School, ending with her untimely death
in 2008. This scholarship is dedicated to her life’s work for the
children of Worcester.
Friends of Beaman Memorial Public Library
Endowment Fund
In 1911, George Calvin Rice, a local farmer,
presented the town of West Boylston with
the option to purchase land for a new library
in honor of his great-grandfather, Major
Ezra Beaman. The plan was approved at
town meeting, and the Beaman Memorial
Public Library was opened to the public on
September 6, 1912. The Friends group created this endowment
for library programs and operations.

Friends of Hope Cemetery Fund
The Friends of Hope Cemetery was
founded in 1991 by a group of concerned
citizens who wished to assist the city of
Worcester to protect and beautify an

tours, lectures, bird walks, conservation
workshops and Arbor Day activities.

excellence in future design.

Henry B. and Jane K. Dewey Fund
A young visitor enjoys a Family Day at the Worcester Art
Museum, one of the organizations that Harry and Jane Dewey
support through their donor advised fund.
H
arry and Jane Dewey established this donor advised fund in 1994 to support a variety of educational
and community service programs. A lifelong Worcester resident and one of our founders, Harry describes its
advantages:
• Perpetuity: During our lives we can request payments to our favorite charities; after we are gone the fund will continue our pattern of giving.
• Investment Acumen: With its large asset base, the Foundation can obtain sophisticated investment counsel.
• Good Management: We have observed the competence of the Foundation leadership and are satisfied that it is excellent and will continue to be so.
• Flexibility: Needs change and charitable organizations cease to be. With this fund adjustments can be made without incurring court expenses.
• Community Solidarity: One of the pleasures in having a fund is the joy of joining many of our friends and
hundreds of similarly motivated citizens in this effort to better our community.

Donor Advised Funds Offer Choice, Convenience and Connection

gave a talk about the restoration of the Hanover Theatre.
D
onors actively contribute to their community with a donor advised fund. You take a proactive, ongoing
role in making grant recommendations that fulfill your charitable goals. You may also appoint successor
advisors for one generation beyond yourself, and involve your children or other family members in
continuing your philanthropy. Once this advising period end, your fund continues to fulfill your stated
goals in perpetuity.
The Foundation is one of the oldest and largest sponsors of donor advised funds in New England. Its
services simplify your giving, handling all administration and tax reporting processes for a modest fee.
The Foundation can also provide you with insights into community needs that help you increase the
impact of your grants. And as active participants in grantmaking, donors often enjoy joining Foundation
events and connecting with others who share their charitable interests.

Marcia R. Katter Memorial Fund
Even during her student
teaching days at Quinsigamond
Community College, Marcia
Katter (1944–2000) demonstrated
her abundant gifts as an early
childhood educator. Soon she was
directing her own program, the
Trinity Lutheran Community
Nursery School. Rather than turn
away any child, Marcia awarded
numerous scholarships to her
young students.
Marcia Katter (1944–2000), with her grandsons
Jordan and Cody in August of 2000, was a beloved
grandmother and early childhood educator. A recent
grant from the Marcia R. Katter Memorial Fund
purchased oversized books for pre-school children.
When the Worcester Public Schools introduced its preschool
program, Marcia became one of its teachers, while at the same
time earning her master’s degree at Worcester State College.
“This was an exciting and challenging period in my mother’s
life, which she whole-heartedly embraced,” says her son, Kent P.
Katter. In 2001, after his mother’s untimely death, Kent created
this designated fund.
“My mother would be proud that a fund in her name benefits the
Worcester Public Schools preschool program. She was a kind,
giving and loving person. This fund memorializes her and honors
her 25-year teaching career.”

D
uring their lifetime, Hollis and Gwendolyn Alden gave
to a set of institutions they admired through their own
private foundation. After the couple died, their children
decided to dissolve the foundation and replace it with this
designated fund. Established in 1977, the fund contributes
to the causes favored by the Aldens in perpetuity.
Yet over 30 years, each of their original beneficiaries has
undergone a merger, reorganization, or change in name
and scope if not in mission.
Faithful to the Aldens’ preferences, the Foundation
navigates such inevitable changes and makes grants to
the successors or contemporary equivalents of the original
organizations. For example, Easter Seals Massachusetts
receives gifts that formerly supported the Bay State Society
for the Crippled and Handicapped. Grants once destined
for Memorial Hospital and Worcester Hahnemann
Hospital now benefit UMASS Memorial Foundation.
Easter Seals Massachusetts is among the beneficiaries
of the Hollis and Gwendolyn Alden Fund, which
made an unrestricted grant to purchase innovative
technology that engages teachers and students in
interactive learning.

Laurie C. Tinsley Scholarship Fund
L
aurie was a loving mother of seven boys and a dedicated
teacher of children with special needs. When Laurie died in
1994, her husband David and his colleagues in life insurance
created this scholarship to help college-bound high school
graduates who are coping with the death or disability of a
parent.
“These kids may work second jobs to help their families make
ends meet,” says David, “or stay home to care for younger
siblings. We want to encourage them and let them know
others are behind them at a challenging time.”
David adds, “We’re very pleased to be part of the
Foundation’s family of scholarships. We gain exposure to so
many students and benefit from the wonderful administrative
services the Foundation provides for scholarship funds.”
The Laurie C. Tinsley Scholarship Fund honors this devoted
mother of seven and dedicated teacher of children with special
needs by awarding scholarships to college-bound high school
graduates coping with the loss or disability of a parent.
Scholarship Funds

Magee Family Education Fund
Dale Magee, MD, and his wife, Melanie, grew up in New
York State in families of modest means. Both were the first
in their families to attend college, and Regents’ Scholarships
funded their tuition to a state university. Those scholarships
changed their lives. In 2003, the Magees established this
fund to give talented young people in financial need the same
opportunity. Each year’s recipient receives an award for full
tuition at UMass Amherst.
“The Foundation is a pleasure to work with,” says Dr. Magee.
“Within a day, they set up the scholarship we had in mind
and they take care of all the paperwork. I enjoy receiving
updates on how the students are doing. As I hear about their
accomplishments, I see the difference my dollars are making
to young lives, which means the world to me.”
Top: Recognizing the value of quality higher education as well as
the importance of scholarship aid, each year Dale and Melanie
Magee award a young person a full tuition scholarship at UMass
Amherst through their Magee Family Education Fund.

Mary B. Grogan Fund for Youth
Mary Grogan helped establish
her town’s 4-H chapter, which
served Millbury children for
five decades. Yet generations of
residents know her best as their
high school Latin teacher and
guidance counselor.
“Mary Grogan was an icon,” says
a former student, Frank Gagliardi,
a CPA and president of the Millbury Historical Society. “She noticed my A’s in
bookkeeping and suggested I consider accounting. I thank her every day.”
Grantees of the Mary B. Grogan
Fund for Youth include the Millbury
Historical Society, which each year
hosts second-graders at the town’s
1861 schoolhouse, as well as other
education, nature and horticulture
programs benefiting Millbury children.
When the 4-H chapter closed, the Worcester County 4-H Foundation, Inc.
sold its clubhouse and used its proceeds to create this fund, which supports
programs for Millbury youth involving nature, horticulture or education.
Grantees include a Historical Society program that brings second-graders to
Millbury’s two-room schoolhouse, built in 1861. Dressed as a schoolmarm,
an actress recreates a period classroom, complete with duncecap, slateboards
and a switchstick. “The children really enjoy it,” says Frank. “Mary was a big
influence on our town. She’s still helping us.”

Class of 1966 FOLK (Friends of Learning in Killingly) Fund
These Killingly educators and FOLK Fund grant recipients were recognized at a grantee
reception for their innovation and commitment: (Standing, from left) Barbara Porter,
Sandra Kelley, Gale Norman, Anne Vasbinder, Michael Wuescher, Jennifer Hawkins and
Karen Kent. (Seated, from left) Arlene Gauthier, Julie Corden and Colleen Lugauskas
The Thirty Year Class Reunion was a special one for some members of Killingly High School ‘66.
They decided to pool their funds and invest together as a group in the schools they had attended as
young children in Killingly, Connecticut. Through their FOLK Fund, the graduates support public
education in their hometown, encourage innovation and curriculum enhancement, and inspire the
love of learning in current and future generations of Killingly children.
An Advisory Committee of ‘66 graduates recommends grant awards in response to teachers’
proposals. In 2011, the Fund supported projects related to bicycle safety, Killingly history and other
topics as well as educational field trips.

Robert W. Booth Fund in Memory of George F. Booth
A father’s devotion to his community continues in perpetuity
George F. Booth (1870-1955)
was the premier newspaperman in
Worcester during his long career
as editor and publisher of the city’s
leading newspapers. Known as “Mr.
Worcester,” he was also a force in
developing the city’s quality of life.
He founded the city’s parks and
playgrounds and helped set up the
Community Chest, now the United
Way of Central Massachusetts.
Robert W. Booth honors his father
George F. Booth in perpetuity with a
named fund that gives the Foundation
the discretion to make grants that
meet pressing community needs.
Established in 1988, the fund is a major
resource for community betterment.
In 1988, his son and heir Robert W.
Booth established this discretionary
fund in honor of his father with a $10
million gift that doubled the young
Foundation’s assets.
Grants from the Robert W. Booth
Fund in Memory of George F. Booth
include support for Worcester
Public Schools students to visit Old
Sturbridge Village and learn about life
in the region during the 18 th century.
“I had respect for the Foundation, and
the more I learned about it, the more
I liked it,” says Robert. “It would have
been very foolish to set up my own
foundation. I hope others will also take
advantage of its flexibility and permanence. Its structure constitutes a set of
eyes into community needs greater than any single person’s.”

These funds provide support for changing community needs as determined by Foundation distribution committees.

Greater Worcester Community Foundation
I 2011 ANNUAL REPORT
The Acorn Society
Linda V. Carlson Romano, who has served as
a volunteer on the Foundation’s Scholarship and
Outreach Committees, recently retired as a legal
administrative assistant at the law firm Mirick
O’Connell where she learned of the methods available
to people who want to make a difference. When it
came time to update their own wills, Linda and her
husband, Albert J. Romano Jr., created a provision
for a bequest to Greater Worcester Community
Foundation. Their gift will create three funds in their
names:
Acorn Society members since 2002, Albert and Linda Romano enjoy
attending donor gatherings such as the annual Winter Supper.
The Linda V. Carlson Romano and Albert J. Romano
Jr. Funds - one for discretionary grants, one for
endowed scholarships, and a fund for a youth tennis
program through the local YMCA. “It gives us great
pleasure to perpetuate our gift to future generations
and offer the joys of education and tennis to others.”
The Acorn Society recognizes those who have made plans to leave a gift to the Foundation after their lifetimes. You are
invited to join the roster of Acorn Society members by naming the Foundation as a beneficiary of a gift through your will
or estate plan. With a bequest of $10,000 or more, you can establish a named fund that will endow your annual giving.
Your planned gift may provide you with significant tax advantages. As an Acorn Society member, you will be invited to
special events and Insights Tours, which bring donors and service providers together to explore issues critical to our region.
We are deeply grateful to every member of the Acorn Society, including those who prefer to remain anonymous.
Your legacy strengthens your community.

Financials
An overview of 2011
G
reater Worcester Community Foundation takes great
care to ensure that the philanthropic contributions given
to us will endure and grow on behalf of the community.
Donor gifts are invested in a commingled pool governed
by a disciplined strategy that is intended to both preserve
capital and improve the availability of spendable funds to
meet our grant and program commitments. We attempt to
manage risk through extensive diversification. Among our
investments are high-yield bonds, international equities,
and various sectors including emerging markets, flexible
capital, global macros, and inflation hedging strategies.
The 2011 Investment Luncheon for Donors featured a
presentation by Prime Buchholz & Associates principal consultant
Jeffrey R. Croteau, who was introduced by investment community
volunteer chairman, Tom Bartholomew.

In 2011, the Foundation maintained its total return
spending policy and set a maximum payout of 4% for
grants from permanently restricted endowment funds.
This approach allows spending of a fixed rate of total
market value including realized and unrealized gains and
enables the investment managers to maximize overall
investment return, incorporating growth and income
strategies, while minimizing the impact of market
fluctuations. It is our aim that over many years and
decades, this disciplined approach will support an increase
in our capacity. Since 1995 the Foundation portfolio has
grown by 7.4 percent annually.

Ways to Give
Many options are available to those who contribute to Greater Worcester Community Foundation.
CREATE A NAMED FUND
With a gift of $10,000 or more, you can establish a named
fund to create your personal legacy. Your fund may be donor
advised, scholarship, designated, discretionary, or field of
interest. A Named Fund is a permanent and powerful way
of giving. Your intentions are honored in perpetuity. Your
money enters a well-managed endowment that preserves
capital during tough times and extends the value and reach of
your giving. And because we are a public charity, you receive
the maximum tax benefits allowed by law.
ADD TO AN EXISTING FUND
Support a cause, honor a loved one, or express your values by
giving to any of our existing funds. Gifts of any amount are
accepted at any time.
OR MAKE A PLANNED GIFT
You can make a gift to the community that provides income
and tax benefits now, and supports your philanthropic goals
after your lifetime. Name the Foundation in your will or as
the beneficiary of retirement assets, transfer a life insurance
policy, contribute real estate as a future gift while using
the property throughout your lifetime, or setting up a gift
annuity or charitable remainder trust.
YCI (Youth for Community Improvement) develops the
philanthropic and leadership skills of high school students from
diverse backgrounds by providing the opportunity to award
community grants together. YCI members of the 2011 programAngel Winston, Eryl MacConnell, Maggie Smith, Pam Kane (Staff)
and Shaina Lo-gathered at the Foundation’s annual meeting.
