March 24, 2015
Dear Colleagues in Developmental Vision:
It is my distinct pleasure to welcome you to the 45th Annual Meeting of the
College of Optometrists in Vision Development.
COVD’s Annual Meeting is a wonderful time to meet new friends or
reconnect with old ones, complete your fellowship process or take another
step on that road to fellowship, learn about new developments in vision
research and vision therapy, learn new techniques through our comprehensive
Applied Concepts courses, see the latest in products, services, and technology
at our exhibit hall and exhibitor seminars, and enjoy the hospitality of the
Bellagio, and wonderful Las Vegas, Nevada.
The work required to arrange and prepare for this meeting has been
remarkable, and I want to acknowledge the commitment and talent of the
following people who, with the help of various committees that you are part
of, have made this meeting possible:
Gary Williams, OD, FCOVD, Chair of the Education Committee
Robert Fox, OD, FCOVD, Chair of the IECB
Eric Borsting, OD, M.S., FCOVD, Chair of the Research Committee
Pamela Happ, MSM, CAE, Executive Director
Jackie Cencer, CMP, Meetings Coordinator
Penny Melkerson-Kirby, Membership Coordinator
Katie Kirschner, Project Coordinator
More than ever, I welcome your feedback about the Annual Meeting and
everything else about COVD. I encourage you to talk to me any time during
this meeting about your COVD. It is my favorite subject, and I look forward
to speaking with you!
Best wishes for a successful meeting,
Ida Chung, OD, FCOVD

COVD/OEPF/NORA Joint Symposium
COVD PR Update
Wednesday, April 15, 2015
Wednesday, April 15, 2015
Increasing the Role of the Optometrist in
Concussion Management
Toni Bristol, COVD’s Public Relations Consultant, will be present
ing what we have in store for you for this year’s “Making Vision
Therapy Visible” campaign and how you can utilize it in your local
area. Public Services Announcements, Press releases, Facebook,
Twitter, Blogs, etc. COVD is getting the word out about optometric
vision therapy – find out how you can join the campaign!
Presented by DeAnn Fitzgerald, OD
Charles Shidlofsky, OD, FCOVD and
Barry Tannen, OD, FCOVD
Ms. Toni Bristol is a practice manage
ment consultant who specializes in
optometric practices that provide vision
therapy services. She began consulting
health care practices in 1984. In 1988,
she learned of the widespread need
for vision therapy and decided to limit
her consulting practice to helping
optometrists who include vision therapy
as one of their services.
Many concussion patients have visual deficits that impede their
recovery process and interfere with activities of daily living. There
has been an increasing awareness among other professionals
on the visual ramifications of concussion and they are looking
for help. Optometry is well positioned to assist in treating these
concussion patients and assist in the rehabilitative process. This
symposium will include three, 15-minute presentations from
optometrists whom have successfully positioned themselves
as referral sources from medical professionals specializing in
concussion. Come learn how to increase your visibility as a
specialist in this area.
With a background in communication, marketing, public relations
and management, Ms. Bristol has consulted over 500 optometrists
in the US, Canada and Australia. Over the past 16 years, she has
regularly contributed her expertise internationally, publishing
practice management articles in VISIONS, and in COVD’s
quarterly journal, Optometry & Vision Development, and most
recently in VP Today, as well as COVD’s new news publication,
e-Visions.
Dr. Leonard Press Announces
COVD’s New Journal,
Vision Development & Rehabilitation (VDR)
Wednesday, April 15, 2015
As Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Leonard J. Press will share the vision for
our new COVD journal, Vision Development & Rehabilitation.
He will overview the scope of the journal, our editorial review
board and advisors, and our online publication process.
Ms. Bristol is in charge of COVD’s National Public Relations
campaign and for the past nine years, she has served on the
COVD President’s Advisory Council.
Ruth Villeneuve, COVD’s Social Media Consultant will discuss
the social media landscape is an ever-changing canvas. A recent
study by Hootesuite Media Inc. states that 1/4 of the world’s
population is currently using social media. This means posting,
pinning, Tweeting, Vining, Instagraming, and YouTubing are an
even larger part of our success than ever before. Ruth Villeneuve
will describe how COVD has responded to these changes by
monitoring the trends in social media and utilizing the best
platforms to spread the word about vision therapy worldwide.
OD’s and OE Tracker ALERT!
To all Doctors of Optometry:
If you have an OE Tracker Identification number and
are active with ARBO/COPE, you must download the
OE Tracker App and have available when at the COVD
meeting in April. OE Tracker is requesting all submissions
be done electronically with QR Codes, which will be
available after each session in the back of or just outside
the meeting room(s).
For over 4 years, Ruth Villeneuve, BA,
Ed, has overseen social media marketing
for COVD. In addition, she has served
as a social media consultant to several
COVD doctors. Her previous writing
experience includes Your Magazine, Your
Image Magazine, and Visions Journal, as
well as COVD’s new news publication,
e-Visions.
Any session(s) not COPE approved will have a non-COPE
QR Code to scan.
COVD will be using the QR Codes to scan each course,
COPE and non-COPE approved.
You will have 15 minutes after the end of the session to
scan the QR Codes to your OE Tracker App. No CE sheets
will be given out to OD’s who are associated with OE
Tracker.
Ruth Villeneuve has been a practicing
Vision Therapist for over 15 years. As a certified teacher, she has
also been instrumental in helping to develop programs that assist
in transferring knowledge gained in vision therapy to specific
academic areas. Ruth has worked for Dr. Bradley Habermehl and

COURSE: Crossed Wires: The Important
Intersection Between Vision Therapy and
Neurologic Disease
COPE #36399-NO – 2 Hours CE
Presented by David A. Damari, OD, FCOVD, FAAO
Course Description: Many optometrists who treat amblyopia,
strabismus, and other disorders of binocular vision are aware
that these conditions may indicate occult neurologic disorders.
This course will clearly define how to differentiate neurologic
disease from much more common visual disorders that are
routinely treated with vision therapy. We will also discuss signs
and symptoms active vision therapy patients will show if they
have an underlying neurologic disease, and how to help in the
rehabilitation of those who have suffered visual impairment as a
consequence of those diseases.
Course Objective:
The doctor providing vision therapy services will become more
aware of signs and symptoms of neurologic insult that requires
medical or surgical intervention in addition to the rehabilitative
services already being provided.
Dr. David Damari was named Dean of
the Michigan College of Optometry at
Ferris State University on March 28, 2013.
Dr. Damari was most recently chair for the
Department of Assessment and professor
at Southern College of Optometry in
Memphis, Tenn. Since 1995, he has been
a consultant on visual disabilities, advising
national and state testing organizations
on candidates who have requested special
testing accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities
Act including the National Board of Medical Examiners, National
Board of Examiners in Optometry, CFA Institute, Graduate
Management Admissions Council, National Board of Osteopathic
Medical Examiners, National Conference of Bar Examiners, Law
School Admissions Council, and State Bar Examiners including
Minnesota, Texas and Virginia. His previous administrative
experience also included serving as chair of the Department of
Optometry at Southern College of Optometry. Prior to his career
at Southern College of Optometry, Dr. Damari operated a private
solo practice in New York and was an assistant clinical professor at
the State University of New York College of Optometry.
Dr. Damari’s present professional service includes past president
of the College of Optometrists in Vision Development and cochair at the Summer Institute for Faculty Development for the
Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry. He also serves

Course Description:
An overview of the relationship of vision abilities and sports
performance in general and baseball specifically will be discussed
in detail. Many newer dynamic tests as well as modifications
of current optometric tests; stereopsis for example will be
demonstration and scored.
Course Description:
Patients with acquired brain injuries (ABI, CVA, TBI, etc.) are
among the most challenging for the developmental optometrist to
treat. For these and other patients, syntonics provides a new tool
to improve peripheral vision and awareness, improve binocularity,
and reduce symptoms.
The battery used with players at the East Coast Professional
Showcase selected by major league scouts and the analysis of their
results are presented as well as implications for enhancement of
individual performances.
Syntonics (optometric phototherapy) uses stimulation with
specific light frequency combinations to affect physiological
changes and improve balance in the autonomic nervous system.
It is an effective part of the treatment of post-trauma vision
syndrome and a variety of other visual conditions. This course
will review the theory and clinical applications of syntonics for the
population and use case reports to illustrate its use.
Course Objectives:
1) Instructional sets for each of the more than 10 test will
enable attendees to use.; 2) Standardized norms for this patient
population will allow for treatment and enhancement options;
3) The attendees shall be able to use this information when
providing sports vision screenings in the future and add to their
current procedures and protocol.
Course Objectives:
Attendees will learn and understand: 1) A brief history of the use
of light in optometric practices; 2) The effect of syntonic filters
on physiology; 3) Syntonic diagnostic testing including the alphaomega pupil and campimetric visual fields; 4) The four basic
syntonic syndromes; 5) Syntonic treatment protocols for brain
injured patients; 6) How to incorporate syntonics into your vision

Vision Therapists Education Session
3 Hours CE (Non-COPE)
Saturday, April 18, 2015
The Vision Therapy Group has a combined 50 years’ experience in
the field of vision therapy. The center’s three full-time therapists
specialize in treating traumatic brain injury, strabismus, amblyopia,
convergence insufficiency, and the transferring of newly acquired
visual skills to the academic arena.
Presented by Bradley Habermehl, OD, FCOVD with:
Erica Zeiders, OD; Carol Leser, COVT; Kyle Colvin, COVT;
Ruth Villeneuve, BA Ed
In 2011, Dr. Habermehl, then President of COVD, was contacted by
a special needs school in Barbados that was interested in learning
more about vision therapy for their students. A few months later,
the entire vision therapy staff traveled to Barbados to evaluate all
65 students and plan vision therapy sessions for those in need. To
this day, that school in Barbados continues to send students to The
Vision Therapy Group in Michigan for treatment.
Vision Therapists Treat Patients Who “Do
Strabismus”, The Eye Turn is Merely a Symptom
Course Description:
Our model of vision is treating the ”whole” patient, not just an
eye turn. We will discuss how strabismus affects the patient’s
spatial relationships and how they relate to their world. Therapy is
more than building fusional ranges with your patient. It is about
maintaining central and peripheral (magno-parvo) integration
which helps them break through suppression and amblyopia. The
use of therapeutic lenses and prisms in the therapy room are like
training wheels on a bike. Lenses are an important element in the
therapy curriculum and helps create a new pathway to teach the
brain a different method of focus. The therapist will receive new
procedures to use with patients that are “doing strabismus”.
In addition Dr. Habermehl and Dr. Zeider’s team has been
conducting biyearly seminars since 2008. They have led over a
dozen COPE-approved vision therapy seminars and in-services
across the country. Doctors and therapists from the United States,
to the Philippines, Canada, and Australia have turned to this
results-driven vision therapy staff to gain hands-on experience in
both beginning vision therapy techniques, and advanced courses
dealing with amblyopia and strabismus.
Course Objectives:
1) The intermediate level therapist will gain confidence in their
ability to deliver vision therapy for the esotropic or exotropic
patient with and without amblyopia; 2) The therapist will expand
understanding of strabismus and its origin in the brain; 3) They
will learn creativity in adapting the activities to different age levels
and abilities; 4) The therapist will acquire new procedures to add
to their VT tool box.

Children’s Glasses – Miraflex frames are manufactured in Italy,
and initial sales to the Colombia, South America market began in
the early 1990’s. In 2004, the company added sales to the United
States and European markets. Today, the company provides
quality frames to all seven continents. Miraflex frames contain no
metal pieces, and weigh only 8 grams (about 1/2 ounce), which
makes the frames extremely child-friendly. The anatomical bridge
supports the weight of the lenses over a wide area, an important
precaution for babies’ and children’s very tender noses. Not having
to adjust nose pads, replace screws, or adjust temples leaves the
Miraflex frame virtually maintenance-free, making life easier for
parents, children, and opticians. An adjustable band wraps behind
the child’s head and keeps the frame close to the child’s eyes. This
is critical for early vision therapy, and helps generate life-long
permanent vision corrections for the child.

New research on brain plasticity finds that groundbreaking
training on PATH to Reading increases attention and reading
scores 1-7 grade levels in 3 months, and improves reading fluency
2 to 11 fold, in addition to other types of cognitive processing, like
speed of processing, pronunciation, working memory, sequential
processing, figure/ground discrimination, and multitasking. PATH
to Reading, a computer-based, easy to administer, and extremely
effective product, patented in the US and worldwide, was developed
in leading university laboratories and clinically validated in
public schools with funding from NIH and US Department of
Education. PATH to Reading or PATH to Insight (PATH) are
the only programs that strengthen the magnocellular, relative to
parvocellular, pathways in the visual cortex (Dorsal Visual Stream),
the deficit underlying most reading and many cognitive problems,
using programs activating initially the posterior and subsequently
the anterior portions of the dorsal stream, providing the input to
the Central Executive Network, the endogenous attention system.
When PATH, changing the brain’s timing by retraining the neural
channels to function in synchrony, precedes other vision therapy,
children and adults rapidly improve their attention, reading
fluency and comprehension, pronunciation, working memory, in
addition to other cognitive skills. PATH has successfully treated
people with slow reading, dyslexia, attention deficits, ADHD,
central auditory processing problems, convergence insufficiency,
amblyopia, autism, schizophrenia, and traumatic brain injuries. There is no other program like it.

Are the Eyeglasses You Prescribe an Impediment
to Success with Vision Therapy?
Shaw Lens
Presented by: Dr. Peter Shaw
Optometrists prescribe and dispense eyeglasses but rarely do we
take into account the binocular considerations of the final lens
design. Patients with fragile sensory or motor fusion systems are
particularly sensitive to eyeglass design. This presentation will
assist the optometrist in identifying such patients and review
spectacle treatment strategies. Good eyeglass design that supports
sensory and motor fusion is the key to success with both primary
care and vision therapy patients.
