1956 CHRIS CRAFT SEA SKIFF CRUISER 40’. 12-foot
beam. The owner of the Chris Craft pictured above actually
has two of them – a ’56 and a ’67 – and refers to them as “my
twins.” Approximately 80 of these hulls are believed to have
been produced. The 1956 is hull number SK 40-104 and the
owner believes that with all the research he has done she is
the only one left from 1956. She has no engines and – as you
can see in the photo below – has been meticulously stripped
down to the bare hull. Galley, dinette, and sitting nook are
down below. This boat was originally offered as a hardtop, a
convertible sedan, or in a fishing version with a fly bridge.
The asking price is the cost of the yard fees, which at the

stateroom, two guest rooms, two heads, full galley, spacious
main saloon and aft deck for entertaining. Cabin tops are
fiberglassed. Boat has been out of the water for a number of
years on jack stands and is being sold “as is - where is”. Radar
antenna and other electronics as well as stbd. prop shaft

According to Jed, “My involvement with the Matthews (like
many boats) is to simply find a place for the boat other than
the junkyard. …the whole "upper middle class" of boater that
would consider this size of boat has all but vanished from our
area of the Great Lakes. People want a large (50-100ft) new
yacht or something less than 35ft where they can trailer and

when Ginger Martus tried to save a single boat from
meeting the business end of a chainsaw.

job and it shows -- much more detail and in-depth about the
boats and interesting stories from people. I look forward to

Yes, I'm still active in the nautical field but am slowing down a
bit. I am just recovering from a bout with "Gout", and was on
medication for 6 days, so now have to be more careful of what
I eat, like my favorites, shellfish and wine, darn!

attending the annual Spring meeting
of the Antique & Classic Boat Society
(ACBS), held this year at Mystic
Seaport, Mystic, CT, over April 1215. I drove to Port Washington, LI,
my hometown, and had dinner with
my long-time friends. I stayed
overnight and then drove to Orient
Point, the North Fork of LI, past all
the wineries, to board the 11am
ferry to New London, CT.
It’s
usually a nice voyage, an hour and
half, and then a short hop to Mystic.

There’s not much room for many comments from me this
issue, and, as always, I hope you have as much fun reading it
as I have had communicating with the boat owners and
putting it together. There’s a great mix of boats in this issue,
including that impressive FREE 45’ Matthews on page 1. Don’t
miss the update from Bone Yard Boats founder Ginger Martus.
Take note of the stamp on the envelope. Postal rates have
increased 54% since last issue! I may have to modify the
format to drive the postage rates down, so stay tuned!

I stopped at the nautical consignment shop, BOAT STUFF, to
chat with owner, Paula Petersen, to see if any of my boat stuff
sold and to look around at all the other boat stuff. If you’re in
the area, stop by 15 Holmes St., or call 860-536-3422; it's a
fun place to visit. Next it was on to the official opening of the
meeting at 2:30pm at the Seaman's Inn where ACBS
Chairman, Jeff Rogers, President, Bob Bush, and President and
Director of Mystic Seaport, Doug Teeson, gave opening
remarks. According to the attendee list, over 100 people came
from North, South, East and West.

On April 30th I received the following story via email Bill H.:
The rest of the day was devoted to sessions by Symposium
participants followed by a cocktail reception at the Mallory
Building, which houses the exhibit of the famous Rosenfeld
photographs. After a clambake dinner held at the "Gallery"
with keynote speakers, Dana Hewson, Curator of Watercraft at
Mystic Seaport and Mary Ann Stets, Director of Collections, the
evening came to a close.
I have this boat that is in dire need of a new owner. It is in
need of a complete restoration. It had been in the water until
mid-November ‘06, when I hauled it on a small railway in New
Jersey. I have attached several photos, and will briefly list the
following details: The boat is 49+ feet in length, with a 12 ft
beam, has a torpedo stern, clipper bow and bow cockpit. The
manufacturer and age is not known. I lean towards Purdy, or
Consolidated, and about 1933 (the last year of Prohibition).

replacing. It was in the water 2 years ago. It will float and

1960 THOMPSON SEA COASTER 16’. Mahogany plywood
deck. Hull is lapstrake over oak ribs. 6’ beam. Her name is
SWEET 16.
Powered by 1959 Mercury MK58AEL Super
Thunderbolt Single V-Drive 45 hp.
Owner says, “It is a 1960 Thompson Sea Coaster Special 475;
with a 1959 Mercury MK58AEL and a 1959 SnowCo trailer. It
was a two-year project. I completely stripped the hull and
brightwork. The hull got two coats of Smith's CPES, a barrier
coat, two primer coats, and two top coats. The bottom has the
old standard copper bronze on it. The bright work, after
sanding, and staining, got two coats of CPES, then five coats
of Pettit Captains varnish, and two coats of Epifanes clear
varnish on the decks. I installed a Teleflex steering system,
re-wired the boat, installed a tachometer, speedometer, temp
gauge, moved the key switch to the dash panel, installed the
air horns. The MK58AEL was stripped, primed, & painted
authentic Mercury colors. It has new timing belt, plugs, wires,
points, condenser, carb kits, fuel pump kit, and water pump.
The trailer was stripped, sanded, primed, & spray painted. It
has new wheels, tires, brgs, rollers, bunks, winch, jack, &
lights. I am the second owner of this classic boat.”

“I'm glad to hear that there still might be a home for the old
girl. As for details...the marine museum in Virginia describes it
as a late fifties Chris Craft luxury cruiser. 26' with an inboard
Chevy 283. Marine plywood construction. It's very rough.
The hull has split along one of the mid ship seams. It's
probably been a refuge to some of the wildlife around here.
The boat is intact, that is all the pieces are still there. The
cabin is in good condition. It hasn't been in the water since
1990. I did have the engine running a few years back. It was
freshly rebuilt at the time I purchased it. Whole or in pieces.
This boat has been stored outdoors for over 10 years and is in
really rough shape. However there are many good parts
available. It does have to leave here in one piece.”

boat a great weekender and the motor is easily maintained.
I've seen the boat out of the water and she is excellent below
the waterline. This owner is the third and he has kept the boat

star class hull, I believe, but was configured as cabin boat.
This was a project for my Dad and I but he passed on Feb.
2nd, so I have lost heart in it. Previous owner bolted motor
mount through transom for out board. Just totally out of
place and wrong. She was meant to be sailed, not motored. I
am only the second owner technically; first owner passed it to
his son who started the restoration but got in over his head
almost immediately. He paid over $4300 in storage fees
before passing boat on to me. Boat in restorable shape, still
pretty solid, but rough topsides. Needs help soon. I have
titles for both the boat and the trailer. Big advantage there
having the trailer and I will let it go with boat. Storage is only

ribbon stripe mahogany ply for the buyer to use for a new
deck. New dashboard with brand new instruments, and also

and pressure water system, head and cooktop. Bottom seams
need to be reefed and recaulked. Some minor repairs on
starboard sheer will also be needed. I have been on this boat
many times and looked her over. She could be redone this
winter with about a month's work. A hardtop is easily
converted with a flydeck. This is a clean, classic that has been
stored for a few years and she needs a new owner. Price has

Patrick’s “other twin.” This ’67 has a broad 14-foot beam.
Originally built with mahogany sides and plywood lapstrake
bottom, 90 of these hulls were built between the 1967 & 1969
model years. This boat has engines and generator that the
owner reports as ‘running.’ According to the owner, “I have
always liked the layout of this boat, she's opposite of the ‘56.
With this one, the galley and lounge areas are all top side and
just the head and berthing areas are below; in the ‘56 it’s all
down below. The ’67 has all this up in the salon where it’s
brighter and the airflow is better. Down below in the ‘67 are
the head, V-berth, and bunkroom.” The asking price is the

However, the problem is we have very little experience
working around boats. We grew up on a farm and have many
mechanical and building skills, we've just never worked on
boats before. Our grandpa introduced us to sailing on a 14'
Hobie Catamaran and we've loved boats ever since. Could
you give us some pointers on how to get more experience.
We're eager to learn from someone who's done this before
and read up and research so we don't get into something
we're not able to handle. We'd appreciated any advice you

1951 UTILITY MOTOR SAILER 37’. 10-foot beam. 4-foot
draft. Owner says, “Built at Stonington Boat Works in 1951,
on a Henry Scheel design. Found in 1974 on Barnegat Bay,
rebuilt at Flanagan Bros. Boatyard (new stem and transom)
and sailed until 1990. Second rebuild in my back yard is about
60% complete. Hull is doug fir on steambent oak, white cedar
foredeck, two inch Port Orford cedar deck aft. Bad
frames,planks,and butt blocks have been replaced. Interior of
cabin has been partially removed to expose hull. 6 cylinder
Ford diesel with Velvet drive available(engine has major
overhaul with no hours). All gear/equipment included.”

1936 RICHARDSON LITTLE GIANT CRUISER 26’. Very
original model 26-3 features lavatory with full head room,
galley with 2-burner safety alcohol stove, porcelain sink,
running water, dish lockers and space for ice and food. Four
berths convert to daytime seating, with a large storage space
forward. Captain's chair and rear cockpit bench cushions are
reupholstered in dark blue. Boat has all of the original gauges
and hardware; all are in excellent condition. Power is the
original Kermath 100HP engine. Keel and frames are white
oak, transom and covering boards are mahogany, and
planking is clear cedar. Bottom and hull are exceptionally tight.
Water tank capacity is 26 gallons. The two, 30-gallon fuel
tanks are NEW. Cruiser is in very good condition, overall. All
wood in excellent shape; exterior mahogany has been stained
and revarnished. Hull paint could use freshening. A custom
(roadworthy) trailer available for an additional $2,000. Call

I would estimate about a months worth of work to make her a
showboat! The inside of this boat has no scratches or screw
holes where they should not be and the bilges were powerwashed each fall before she was stored on her trailer in a barn
each winter. The dual axle trailer is substantial and well made
for this boat. The second owner is very proud of this boat and
would love to see another wooden boat lover take her over.”

I acquired it in 1981, from a Naval Cadet Alliance. They
received it in the 1960’s from a lawyer who lived on it at the
79th St. basin in NYC. Around 1950, it had two Chrysler
Crowns installed at the Bath Iron Works, in Maine. I believe
that the hull is teak over cedar on oak ribs, copper riveted.
One of my peers insists that the outer hull is African
mahogany.
In 25 years, I have not been able to find any hull, or builder,
markings. Some people think it’s Art Deco, others European,
and one person thought it was a Admiral’s Gig. The boat is
located at Smith’s Creek in Sewaren, New Jersey. This creek is
off the Arthur Kill and about two miles from the Outerbridge
Crossing (between Staten Island and NJ).

1963 CHRIS CRAFT SKI BOAT 17’. Philippine Mahogany
hull. 6-foot beam. Single inboard gas Chevrolet 283 CID V8
185hp.
Accessories include mooring cover, anchor, fire
extinguisher, seat cushions, galvanized minnow trap and
galvanized minnow keeper. Bottom is off (great for inspection
of framework). This is a complete boat. All hardware,
instruments, interior and planking are available. Dis-assembly
notes and photos are included along with research material
from the Mariner’s Museum (Owner’s Manual, Original
Equipment List, Shop drawings). It also comes with many back
issues of Classic Boating, Channel Marker and Rudder/Rusty
Rudder magazines.
Owner says, “The boat was purchased in the late 80’s and was
used in fresh water only for two or three summer seasons
here in southern Michigan. She has plenty of power to pull
skiers and is very comfortable cruising at all speeds from a
dead idle all the way up to redline. She wintered in a fully
enclosed insulated garage. I found that the hull leaked a lot,
so a bottom restoration was started in 1992. Then life got in
the way and she has remained in garage storage since then.
She now it awaits a new owner who has the time, talent and
treasure to bring her back to her full glory.” Asking: $5,995.

NJ COMMUTER ‘AT SPEED’ IN THE EARLY NINETIES
The oak stem, oak ribs, oak butt blocks are failing. The outer
hull planking is still hard. Most of the interior, which had been
added by the lawyer, has been removed and discarded. The
bare inner hull is mostly open. I removed the engines, about
four years ago and the stainless fuel tanks were also junked.
The pictures with the green bottom paint are current. The
pictures, at speed, were taken in the early nineties. The
picture docked is from the late eighties, but shows a nice
profile. I know that the stern cabin, port side door and
plywood bridge, were added by the lawyer and they are bad.
In the late eighties, after replacing the stern stem, shaft log
beds, shaft logs and engine beds I installed a pair of 305 OMC
225 HP inboards. They used 2.57 to 1 Velvet Drives, swinging
20x22 three-bladed props. The pictures are (with bow out) are
at about 4100RPM and clocked at 27 mph. Prior to 1950, the
boat had two V-12 engines (totaling about 7000 to 8000lbs).
Scott Halls would have been about 500 to 600 HP each, and
should have pushed the boat to the 50-60 mph range. The
boat was probably used by the government during WWII
(coastal service), but that is speculative.
Thanks, in advance, for the interest. I am looking for more
pictures, and have more details about the boat. As I stated, I
cannot save this boat. The time on the rail is limited, and the
yard owner wants to eliminate my slip. If you can provide any
input as to its origins, that would be great. This boat, even in
its current shape, has been my joy for many years.

…SUBJECT: OLD COMMUTER IN NJ
When I turned on the TV weather station the next morning,
there were predictions of a severe storm headed our way; so
not wanting to depart so soon, yet not looking forward to a
roller-coaster ferry ride across LI Sound, I decided it was best
to catch the 11am ferry back to LI and then drive straight
through to NJ. I'm glad I did, as the next day was worse than
terrible! I later heard that some had to stay another day or
two before they cold get a flight out. But everyone made it
back to their destinations, eventually.
Now, can the S.S. UNITED STATES be saved? As a member of
the S.S. UNITED STATES Conservancy, I received an invitation
to attend an all day, 'Symposium and Gala Reunion', on June
9th at the Independence Seaport Museum in Philadelphia.
Being only about 45 minutes from Philly and a member of the
Museum I plan to attend, as I did last year and found it most
interesting.
NJ COMMUTER ‘TORPEDO STERN’
There will be an update on the status of this famous cruise
ship by the President and CEO, Colin Veitch of Norwegian
Cruise Lines, the owners of the ship. There will be other
presentations, discussions, films, items for sale and a special
luncheon where you can see the S.S. UNITED STATES at her
Pier on the Delaware River. Don't know what her fate will be,
but I may give you an update in the next issue.
Naturally, I responded quickly to Bill that I would very much
like to help him find a new home for his boat through Bone
Yard Boats and our community of subscribers. Unfortunately,
I was too late. On May 2nd – just 3 days after his first email –
I received the following:
My next planned event is to drive to the Chesapeake Bay
Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, MD. where the 20th annual
Antique & Classic Boat Society's Chesapeake Bay Chapter will
hold its three-day event over June 15-17th. This is billed as
the largest classic boat show in the Mid-Atlantic region, and
I've been a member for the past 20 years and have seen it
grow. It is well organized and run by dedicated members and
the main theme is to have "FUN'.

Thanks for the response, but the yard started taking it apart,
yesterday. They wanted the railway available, and took away
my slip of twenty years. After many years of ownership, it will
soon be a memory. I would have given it away. I still have
not found anyone, who can recognize its origins.
It starts off with a Friday night dinner cruise on the excursion
boat, 'PATRIOT', a two-decker boat. Then on Saturday there’s
an all day judged boat show with plenty of vendors under a
big tent. That night, we dine at a catered buffet dinner party
under another tent followed by a picnic & awards on Sunday.

This year the 'Bone Yard Boats' award will be the newly
published book by Dr. Margaret A Rosenfeld, titled, 'ON LAND
AND SEA'. Yes, Margaret and her husband, Richard are of the
famous Rosenfeld family of photographers. Richard is the son
of Stanley Rosenfeld and grew up on the boat FOTO, which is
now on display at the Cutts & Case boatyard in Oxford, MD.
Richard and Margaret keep their 37ft Tartan sailboat, BLEW
BAYOU, (get it?) at the nearby Oxford Boatyard where they
can see FOTO as they pass by. Dr. Margaret Rosenfeld is a
Professor of Sociology at the University of Delaware and has
written many articles and books on this subject. I invited
Margaret and Richard to be my guests at the awards
ceremonies where her book will be presented. They plan to
sail over from Oxford and spend the day.
Next, it’s off to Mystic, CT. over June 28- July 1, for the
Woodenboat Show. This annual event is moved each year to
different locations across the country and is a three-day event.
It’s a large show with lots of classic boats to see and board.
Hope to 'hang-out' with some of my nautical friends along the
way. (It’s better to 'hang-out' than to 'hang-in). More travel
planned, but will give you another Dinghy news in the next
issue. Enough for now.
