Our clergy is here for you. Please let us know when you need us—if someone is
ill or in the hospital—or when you want to share your good news: a new baby, a
marriage, or other simcha. We want to know; but you have to tell us. Please call

one, please contact Rabbi Nesson at (973) 538-9292

this way he will be the most helpful in making these
preparations in a proper Jewish manner.

FROM THE DESK OF THE RABBI
The Holidays Are So Early This Year!
(Or Are They?)
I
t’s hard to believe it, but even
as you receive this
summer newsletter, the High Holidays are
right around the corner—Wednesday evening, September 4!
Yes, we have wonderful things planned
for the summer: a dinner and discussion
for Tisha B’Av, a musical Shabbat at Freedom Park, and a chance to “see” Lebanon
though the eyes of Bert Rosenheck, to
name a few. We hope you will join us. (Details of these programs are elsewhere in
the newsletter.)
At the same time, we are already working full steam ahead on the High Holidays, Life Long Learning, Adult Education,
Shalom Yeladim, Religious School, social
events and more, all for next year.
But, the holidays seem so early...
In one of his comedy routines, Jackie
Mason has observed how Jews are always
saying that the holidays are always either
early or late—never on time. When they
are on weekends, they leave us exhausted
for the week. When they are on weekdays,
they interfere with our ability to get anything done. When they occur in early September, who can fast so late on Yom Kippur? When they are in mid-October, who
can get home in time for Kol Nidre?
The relatively unpredictable pattern of
the Yamim Nora’im however, I believe, is a
blessing and an opportunity. If they came
on the same days on the American calendar each year, we would become complacent and the holidays would lose their urgency and meaning. This season is meant
to shake us out of our usual patterns and
force us to take a look at how we spend
our time—especially the ruts in which we
find ourselves.
The month of Elul (which starts August
7) begins a time for taking stock—taking
stock of our actions and interactions. It
reminds us to look with affection at the
people around us, just as it asks us to take
a critical look at our own lives. What have
we done to elevate the spark of G-d within
others and within ourselves? What opportunities have we gained and what opportunities have we missed? Thinking in
these terms cracks the veneer of the usual
in our lives, and being asked to do this
earlier one year, and later the next, gives
added meaning to the ebb and flow to the
timing of our lives.
Once we have begun to identify the
good and the bad in our lives, we have
the chance to act and react. The process is
called teshuvah, or “turning.” The result is
forgiveness by those we have wronged—
other people, G-d and ourselves.
Can that ever really be too early?

A NOTE FROM THE CANTOR
D
ear Friends,
I want to
share with you
what happened in
the past year.
I’m proud of all my B’nai Mitzvah students. They were working very hard and did
the maximum to their abilities. I encouraged their parents to read from the Torah
and am excited to share that some of the
parents did! I also have a new adult reader, Peppi Glass, who recently read from the
Torah. She joined my Adult Torah Readers
class and did a fantastic job! I would like
to invite you to join one of our classes this
year. After the High Holidays I’ll resume
our Megillat Esther class. Another Torah
Readers class will begin in the spring after
Pesach. Look for more details.
I’m also proud to share with you that
this was my third year representing MJCBY
at the West Orange JCC’s Yom HaZikaron
ceremony by singing the prayer for the
State of Israel.
This year, during the Annual Cantors
Assembly Convention, I was honored to
participate in the concert celebrating the
65th anniversary of the State of Israel.
As we all are ready for vacation, I would
like to ask our students how much school is
left before the summer. You will get an answer in days, hours, or occasionally, down
to the minute before vacation. You’ll get
this same reaction around birthdays and
other important celebrations. But at this
time of year, Jews do something slightly
different. We count up to the holiday of
Shavuot. So what’s the difference? What
does it matter which way we count?
Counting down places very little value
on the intervening days; we almost wish
they’d hurry up and disappear entirely so
that we can reach our destination faster.
Rather, starting from the second night of
Pesach, we start counting up towards 50
and Shavuot. In ancient times, the Israelites would set aside a portion of their
harvest on each day and then present it
all as an offering called “The Omer.” Instead of only viewing the destination as
the item of importance, we need to stop
and recognize the journey along the way.
We are commanded to count each day, as
a way to remind us to stop and count the
blessings in our life. So here’s a great exercise for you and your family to do: see how
many blessings you can come up with as
we close the end of a school year.
Have a wonderful and meaningful summer!
B’Shalom,

POST FROM THE PRESIDENTS
W
e hope that each of you enjoys your
vacation, summer fun and hopefully
a slower pace during the warm weather.
Here, at MJCBY, many folks will remain
busy both in front of and behind the curtain. With High Holy Days arriving early,
there is much to do in preparation. Also,
our Shalom Yeladim camp program will be
in full swing in the next few weeks, and
there is nothing we like better at MJCBY
than the sound of children playing.
There is much in store for the coming year at MJCBY, which touches on the
theme that we and the Board of Directors
hope each of you will embrace—Hineni
(“Here I am”). We look forward to hearing
each and every member of our community
say “Hineni” many times during the year as
you attend the many fun and educational
programs that are being planned.
For example, Adult Education, under the
direction of Peppi Glass, will be presenting erudite and topical programs. We also
have many events planned for Life Long
Learning under the direction of Gail Sulkin
and Michele Nulman. Please look for a full
schedule in the upcoming newsletters and
calendar notices that will be circulated.
We are looking forward to a great year at
MJCBY—but that cannot happen without
you. We ask that every member of our community commits to participate and attend
the wonderful activities that are planned.
So, as you receive your High Holy Days
UPDATE
packet and announcements of services, activities and programs from Adult Education,
Life Long Learning, fundraising and other
events that are being scheduled, stand up
and be counted. Join in with your friends
and family, and don’t simply respond “Ani
po”—proudly shout with us: “Hineni!” Be
a presence and not simply present.
B’Shalom,
Fern and Robert

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

ell, it’s finally

and I believe everyone knows how
to complete the
byline to this article—it’s Superman!! Another year and another Superman movie. I
will not give you a review of the new flick
but I hear it is worth seeing (even if you
want to wait for it to appear on cable).
What you may not know is that Superman (at least the comic book iteration) is
almost as old as our MJCBY building. The
founders of Morristown Jewish Center Beit
Yisrael erected our synagogue on Speedwell Avenue in 1929. Just four years later
in 1933, during the height of the depression and at the advent of the Nazi scourge,
two Jewish high school students in Cleveland (Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster) developed the first iteration of the Superman/

Clark Kent phenomenon. By 1938, Action
Comics in its first published edition introduced the world to the “Man of Steel.” The
rest, as they say, is history.
Given its Jewish origins in Cleveland,
the mythology of Superman shares a resemblance to the story of “Moses, the Deliver.” Baby Kal-El, placed in a pod/basket
by his father Jor-El to save him from sure
destruction, is discovered and raised by an
adopted family to become the go-to hero/
savior of human existence.
We, the Jews of Morristown, past, present and future, have also had heroes that
paved the way for a vibrant Jewish existence in Morris County. The founders of
the Jewish Community Center and House
of Israel (yes, that is the original and still
official name of MJCBY) built this magnificent house of worship, gathering and
community. They gave us a legacy born of
hard work, sacrifice
and dedication, that

will race behind you, they will stumble,
they will fall. But in time they will join
you in the sun. In time, you will help them
accomplish wonders.”
At some point the people of Israel needed
a “Superman”; whether to save them from
Pharaoh, from the Crusades, from Torquemada or from Hitler and Stalin. Sometimes
there arose a Moses or the American Army
in WWII; sometimes there was no one to
save us. We learned through the journey
to the “Goldene Medina” (America) or in
the creation of the State of Israel that we
the people, could rise up and become the
“Super Hero” we had been looking for.
We the people—whether as American
Jews, Israelis or Jewish residents of Morris
County—we will accomplish wonders. We
already have.
Enjoy your summer.

AV I A N N A M I L L E R
August 31
S
tacy and Jon Miller proudly invite the
congregation to worship with them and
join in their simcha as their daughter Avianna Janessa is called to the Torah as a Bat
Mitzvah on August 31, 2013. Avianna is a
high honor roll student at Memorial Junior
School in Hanover Township and will be
entering seventh grade in the fall. When
not studying for school or preparing for her
Bat Mitzvah, Avianna enjoys reading, music, art, playing basketball, participating in
track and field, singing, playing the violin,
technology, bike riding, taking gardening
classes, shopping, cooking, spending time
with friends and family, and going to the
beach.
Avianna chose to accomplish three
mitzvah projects. Avianna is a mitzvah
volunteer at Cerebral Palsy of North Jersey’s Horizon School. As a volunteer at the
Horizon School, Avianna immerses herself
in the class routines of this school by giving one-on-one support to students ages
3 to 12 with severe and multiple disabilities. Avianna chose to spend as many days
as she could over her spring break from
school volunteering at Horizon School and
is looking forward to volunteering there
over the summer and other days that she
has off from school.
Avianna’s second mitzvah project is
volunteering at the Jewish Relief Agency
(JRA), a provider of food assistance to
needy Jewish families in the New Jersey
MetroWest area. One Sunday each month,
volunteers come together at the JRA’s Morristown location to pack and then deliver
fresh produce and nonperishable kosher
pantry items to Jewish households in
need. Avianna, along with her family, volunteered at three distributions where they
assembled boxes, bagged produce, packed
boxes, sealed boxes and made deliveries
to recipient families. At the third distribution, a celebration was held in honor of
Avianna completing the requirements of
this mitzvah project, with Avianna’s family and grandmother there to volunteer and
celebrate. Avianna and her family plan to
continue volunteering at the Jewish Relief
Agency’s future distribution dates.
Avianna’s third mitzvah project involved
conducting a collection drive of toiletries
and personal care items for Family Promise
of Morris County, an organization dedicated
to ending the crisis of homelessness faced
by Morris County families by partnering
with other agencies, religious congregations, and community volunteers to provide shelter and services leading to selfsufficiency. Avianna is proud that she was
able to collect approximately 300 items for
this worthy cause that will be utilized by
needy recipients. Besides collecting some
items through the religious school, Avianna
solicited full-sized items and samples from
companies along with using coupons to
purchase others.
With love and great pride, Avianna’s parents and sister, Shayna, look forward to
sharing this special day with her, along with
family, friends and the congregation.

ith our ice cream party all over, it’s
sad to think that the Kadima year
has come to an end. I had a great time
this year, from Sweet Sukkah Sunday, to
great Shabbat Dinners, to an amazing Indoor Olympics. This year was truly a great
year for Kadima! I hope everyone has an
amazing summer at camp and enjoys the
fun in the sun. I can’t wait until September when we start Kadima all over again!
See you next year!

JCBY Sisterhood…..Join Us!
Sisterhood is the organization of
women within the congregation who band
together in friendship for programs to benefit the synagogue and our community, for
social activities, for learning, and, above
all, for individual growth so that each
woman may find an opportunity to fulfill
her potential as a person and as a Jewish woman. Sisterhood provides the arena
for the individual to expand and grow in a
Jewish atmosphere. Our Sisterhood is the
collective presence, voice and strength of
women. It is the place where women can
meet and work together for the benefit of
the congregation. Here, women can initiate and develop projects in which they
have an interest. Sisterhood provides an
outlet for the creative energy, talent and
leadership potential for individual Jewish
women. Sisterhood also gives women a
worldwide identity through its affiliation
with Women of Conservative Judaism.
We are proud to announce that Debbie
Brody and Donna Gross have been named
our Eishet Chayil (Woman of Valor) for next
year. We look forward to honoring them
and celebrating their commitment to the
MJCBY Sisterhood at our annual Torah Fund
Brunch on December 15, 2013.
Join us for our summer Sisterhood programs:
July 15: Tisha B’Av dinner and study session
July 18: Torah Fund “Chai Tea”
August 1: Annual Mah Jongg Tournament
We welcome your participation, input
and programming suggestions. For more
information about any of our upcoming
Sisterhood events, send an email to Jill
Frankel or Lynne Rosenfeld.
