Nate VanderMale said his biggest challenge when building this lakefront home was “to be creative and
think outside the box.” But customers who have worked with him say he’s not just outside the box, he was
never in it. He’s “wicked good” as they say in Maine, and it shows in the details: stone, wood, leather, and
metal finishes throughout the home flow together flawlessly. Nate has an artist’s instinct for mixing materials and styles. It’s like putting a Picasso with a Van Gogh – it doesn’t seem like it would work, but in his
hands, it does.
Situated in Grand Haven with views of Lake Michigan, this 6,500 square foot modern Cape Cod/
Tudor home’s interior features three different styles: cottage/ loft, southern New England, and contemporary Nantucket. Nate mixed them all effortlessly with his own ideas to create a one-of-a-kind masterpiece.
The homeowner says that one of the only requests she made was to have three master suites, one on the
first floor and two on the second floor for her two daughters, so the home features five full bathrooms and
three powder rooms. “We didn’t have a designer – Nate is it,” says the homeowner. “Everything he does
is unique – you won’t see anything he does in your home in anyone else’s,” she adds. She remembers that
Nate would sit by himself in another room sketching, and come out with an idea. “He would draw on the
drywall to explain what he wanted to do,” she says. Nate says that for more than a year, he worked three
to five hours a day, simply researching and generating ideas.
Sometimes the small details that aren’t instantly apparent add up to a greater whole: whimsical star
cutouts add interest to the dormer level stairway bannisters, and the posts feature lighthouse-style newels.
The kitchen’s soft coastal blue started with a pillow; the homeowner had an oriental pillow with blues and
greens she loved, so J.W. Brushworks Painting Company worked with her to recreate those hues. Mark

Frimodig of Frimodig Design also played an integral role in creating
the desired look in the home. The magnificent hood over the kitchen
stove is a combination of mirror and brushed stainless steel custom
designed by Nate, first creating it in wood, and then having the metal
formed. Turned legs on the kitchen island were hand-crafted, and the
island itself conceals a microwave. The flow and movement of the
island’s granite top continue the kitchen’s coastal vibe.
Nate created a unique piece of built in furniture for each room in the
home. A trained furniture designer, he has a flair for built-ins: dramatic
details make these furnishings pop. Nightstands are topped with a cream
colored onyx stone which glows when lit from underneath in the master
bedroom, and in the den, Nate used backlighting on the same beige onyx
stone for the desk. In one of the powder rooms, the mirror is lighted
from behind so the stonework surrounding it is accentuated. The limestone fireplace in the den was hand-crafted, as well as the dramatic two
story surround in the great room and much of the stonework in the home
was installed by Donald Baker Masonry.
One of the more unusual finishes Nate works with is leather – it’s
used in various accent pieces throughout the house. He designed the
seats in the upper story’s dormer windows, and the drawer fronts and
handles are made of leather. The master suite’s headboard he designed
using a special grade of leather resistant to body oils. This leather was
also used in the homes elevator. Many accents in the den are made of
high quality, limited availability leather.
The spacious, lofty feeling in the great room was created by
removing a floor to ceiling wall and designing the open staircase with
maple posts and pillars. Many different species of woods were used
throughout the home, including brown and white maple, hickory, walnut, rustic walnut, cedar, mahogany, ¼ sawn white oak, and poplar. A
specially designed floating hearth with unique mantel and furniture
style cabinets create a very distinctive setting. The mahogany front
door and garage doors, and all the moldings are custom made.
“More than 16 different types of glass were used throughout the
home; in the master bath, the vanity glass is textured like rain, and
in the bedroom, the glass is like milk”, the homeowner says. Wavy
glass accents the front door, and beveled glass is featured in the office.
“Nothing looks like the other,” the homeowner says. “Some are contemporary, some are more rustic. They all have a different character.”
The fluidity of the glass throughout the home is echoed in the curved
ceiling and arched window which frames the Lake Michigan view in
the great room. “Giving each room its own identity is VanderMale
Builders’ special quality,” Nate says.

Andy VanderMale, Nate’s father, has been in business for
45 years. He built the homeowner’s first house and put them
in touch with Nate. VanderMale Builders is a family business,
Nate says, and his talent for designing and building homes was
passed down from his dad. He initially intended to become a
furniture designer, but found it wasn’t a good fit for him. Going
into business with his father has allowed him to incorporate his
creativity and passion for furniture design into the homes he
builds. “I’ve been given a great opportunity, and feel extremely
blessed” Nate says.
