It was a blast catching up with so many club members at the Sun Valley open house. I hope you
found some good deals there. I spent some time
working with Heiko to find the right helmet (wow!!!)
so I hope he finally bought one. Our club has seen
a few falls with head bangs, and even one head injury is too many. They aren’t as cool as baseball
caps or even Heiko’s wool classic, but helmets are
a good idea. And they are warmer.
Another idea crossed my addled mind… when
you’re done with your SKI magazine (or your
printed copy of the SchussBoomer,) leave it at your
doctor’s office…. While I was waiting for my annual
physical I tried honing my fashion sense with the
June 1997 issue of Women’s Wear Daily … nuf
sed. My doc is about to get some much needed
reading material with the club’s website attached.
Update on the new pup…. Maggie is full of more
energy than ever and still chews stuff. She chews
whatever she can reach. I was sure that she is part
goat ,because she digs cans out of the recycle bin,
chews them and then piles them in the yard. Then
Cathy got her DNA tested for my birthday present.
(Something I’d afraid to do for myself.) Surprise! No
goats in her family tree. Mostly treeing walker
hound (it’s a real breed) but some mixed breeds
that could be related to goats, nobody can say otherwise.
Next issue - report on holiday skiing. Yuk!

October club
meeting at Sun
Valley Sports
Priscilla’s Corner,
Priscilla Johnson trips VP
I guess I’ll have to make up something here. Priscilla must have gotten busy pushing real estate.
My uncle just started pushing real estate, but from below it…… He was 97. He never believed
that heavy drinking would kill a person…. But booze was involved in his death after all. The 22
year old he was with wasn’t drunk. But her husband was.
However, this is a ski newspaper, so let’s talk skiing. First of all, there are a few slots left on
two of the club trips, so if you’re not signed up, get on the ball! This winter’s snow forecast calls
for better conditions than last year in the southwest, including New Mexico and California.
They need it. And it might well boost snowfall in Aspen and Telluride. But 30 inches of early
snow at my home mountain, Big Sky MT, may mean good early season skiing up north.
Anticipating better powder this winter, I took advantage of spring sales and snarfed up some
fatter skis and some three piece Dalbello boots (easier to hike in). If you laughed at my old
Lange boots, they had over a thousand days of skiing on them when I retired them in April. They
still fit and ski great, but the soles were getting a bit worn. (Cat Tracks extended their life beyond expectations, a great investment if you like your boots).
Speaking of Big Sky, we are no longer the biggest ski area in the USA. Park City swallowed adjoining area The Canyons to create a bigger area. And Snowmass now claims the most vertical at
4400 feet. Big Sky locals are not bummed out, as that could mean fewer people in lift lines. After all, who wants to wait in a lift line for over a minute? We are spoiled.
Speaking of biggest and best, SKI Magazine just released their annual reader survey. And Indy
Ski Club’s destinations are ranked…. Vail is number 7, Telluride 4th, Jackson Hole number 5,
Park City/Canyons is 11th/23rd, and our spring trip to Aspen/Snowmass at 13 and 6. Of course
Whistler Blackcomb returns as number one, due to lots of area, lots of night life, and convenience to the airport…. I just wish it wouldn’t rain there, but if it does there are lots of bars...
(Big Sky stays hidden in the crowd at 21st…. No night life, hard to get to…..)
Look for an early season snow report in the northern Rockies in the next issue. Until then,
Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa, Merry Festivus;…. Whatever

Ski Club Bikers
by Ray Battey
Biking the Cardinal Greenways
Our bike group experienced a
very successful season, never
once being rained out. Aside
from many rides up and down the Monon, the
Cultural Trail, the White River Trail, the Tow
Path, the Pleasant Run Trail and various
Carmel and Fishers bike trails, we had some
great rides on the Cardinal Greenways
(Cardinalgreenways.org). This beautiful railtrail runs for 62 miles from Richmond up
through Muncie to Marion on the right-of-way
of the old Chesapeake and Ohio Railway Company. We did sections of it on three occasions,
in all covering most of the distance. If you can join us
next season, you will see some of the most beautiful parts
of rural Indiana. The trail is flat, wide, smooth asphalt
with very almost no other riders or walkers to get in your
way. We hope to see you next spring, and thanks to
everyone who came out and rode with us this year.
(THANK YOU, Ray, for leading our crew)
We’re still riding! To join our Indy riders on a future Saturday, contact ray at [email protected]
SKI CLUB MEMBER HOLDS ONE JOB FOR ALMOST 50 YEARS !!
Longer than Lisa has been around, longer than Ray and Priscilla
and Jean (together) have been on the board, longer than I have
been Boomer editor… long almost as long as some of our club
members have been on this earth, John Miner has worked for
Halderman Farm Management and Real Estate. He was recently
honored for his coming 50th anniversary and was presented with
cash to be used in telluride. In his ceremony, Howard Halderman
(the guy on the right) said….
“ John joined us 50 years ago (April 1966) and started his work in
Michigan. His roots go back to Tipton County and therefore his
territory quickly became central Indiana, where he is now based
in Greentown. He still works full time today with one of the highest farm management portfolios and provides complete real estate services in Grant, Howard, Tipton, Madison and the surrounding counties in Central IN. John has one of the more dense
areas within the company as well as some of the best farmland.
He also is one of our most creative lease designers, always keeping his client’s best interest in mind
while maximizing their farm’s income potential. “
Congrats John. Enjoy skiing this winter !!
