FRIENDS CORNER
Well so far so good as it concerns our dodging the bullet for
any big storms at least through January. Hopefully March will
bring more of the same. As I write this article one month in
advance, I hesitate to mention February so as not to jinx us all!
Now looking forward to spring and the May 1st Friends/Rotary
co-hosting our 5K & 10K road race/trail run/walk. Time to start
thinking about getting out those running/walking shoes and
getting a little practice in before race day. Registration is now
open so check out details for the race at: http://www.active.com/northboroughma/running/trail-run-races/northborough-5-and-10-k-trail-road-run-2016. Last
year we had quite a few families join us for a fun day so get your friends and
family ready. More details to follow as plans are firmed up.
In connection with our Town’s 250th Anniversary celebration the Friends will
be hosting our second Tea & Fashion Show at the Senior Center in October.
Much to plan in that regard so you may want to start thinking of pulling together
something to wear which would have been worn by townspeople of past
generations when they enjoyed afternoon tea. Current fashions will be featured in
the show as well. More to come later.
Sincerely, Muriel
FRIENDSHIP BRICKWAY
FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN
The Friends of the Northborough Senior Center kick off
our 2016 Friendship Brickway fundraising campaign.
There is something very striking and real about a memorial
that has been engraved in brick to commemorate
something or someone who has an impact on others.
We tend to think of something "carved in stone" as being
permanent, significant and having great meaning.
As with all Friend's programs funds raised in the campaign
for the Friendship Brickway will support the Northborough
Council on Aging and Senior Center activities.
The Friendship Brickway campaign will run through
June 1, 2016. For more information contact Henry
Squillante at [email protected], or the Northborough
Senior Center 508-393-5035.
Swenor, President
You’re invited to join the Friends in support
of Senior Center activities. Please use the
form on this page. All seniors of Northborough
and surrounding towns are welcome to take
part in Senior Center activities, and all are
welcome to visit at any time!
Our Mission – The purpose of the Friends is
to financially assist the Northborough Council
on Aging in providing programs and selective
social services to the senior residents of
Northborough and providing for the purchase
of non-budgeted items for the Senior Center
through membership dues, fund-raising events,
grants, donations and corporate gifts.

SPECIAL EVENTS
MEET THE NEW LIBRARY DIRECTOR
Day: Monday • Date: March 28
Time: 1:00 PM • Cost: Free • Pre-registration Required
Come to the Senior Center and meet Christopher Lindquist, the Library Director. You’ll get to
know him while learning about all the great things that are happening at the Northborough
Free Library!
The Northborough Free Library was founded in 1868, shortly after the Civil War. Captain Cyrus
Gale contributed $1,000 to establish the library. Prior to 1868, there were “social” libraries, church
libraries and an agricultural library. Many of these libraries required an annual membership fee. The Northborough Free Library did not require
a membership fee and was located in the Town Hall. The library quickly outgrew its space in the former Town Hall and in 1894, Cyrus Gale,
Jr., the captain’s son, donated the land at 34 Main St. to build a separate library, where it stands today. He also donated $30,000 towards the
construction of the building. Thanks to funds from the Town and local donors, as well as a construction grant from the Massachusetts Board of
Library Commissioners, the library was significantly renovated and expanded in 2009, with updated technology and services to children, teens
and adults. Between 400 – 500 people a day visit the library and many more visit us online through our website: www.northboroughlibrary.
org. With more than 137,000 items available for loan, including books, magazines, DVDs, CDs, audiobooks and eBooks that can be accessed on
your computer, iPhone or tablet, the library has something for everyone.
GOLF PLANNING MEETING
Day: Wednesday
Date: March 9
Time: 12:00 PM
As the days get longer, it’s time to start thinking about golf. We will
have an organizational and sign up meeting Wednesday, March 9,
12:00 pm at the Senior Center to make our plans for the season.
New golfers are welcome, so please join us at the meeting if you
might have an interest in playing. If you did not play with us last
year, this is an opportunity to meet new people, have a pleasant
social experience, and enjoy a little exercise outdoors in a low key
noncompetitive environment. Skills levels vary, but all are supportive
and newcomers are made to feel welcome. Of the 28 that played last
year, eight are from surrounding towns, so the group isn’t limited to
Northborough residents. We will be playing Cyprian Keys Golf Club.
NORTHBOROUGH 250TH
ANNIVERSARY TOWN HISTORY
PRESENTATION
Day: Tuesday
Date: March 8
Time: 6:30 PM
Cost: Free
Presenter: Gary Hylander, PhD
As Northborough celebrates its 250th anniversary, please join us as
we discuss a series of historical events that have engaged the townspeople of Northborough from the days of the American Revolution to
the present. Our approach will be topical rather than a textbook like
chronological survey. Gary Hylander, PhD, brings history to life and
has always gotten rave reviews for his talks at the Senior Center. Join
him for this series starting on March 8 and continuing on May 24, June
21, July 26, September 27, and November 29 at 6:30 PM. We are very
grateful to the Friends of the Northborough Senior Center for funding
this series! Please join us for dinner at the Bistro @119 prior to each talk.
In 1765 Parliament passed the Stamp Act; the first internal tax
imposed on the colonists. The Stamp Act was designed to raise
revenue to help defray the cost of the Seven Years War. Americans
rallied behind the cry that “taxation without representation”
was unjust and tyrannical. What followed was a Declaration of
Independence, war and a new nation of “We The People.”
SENIOR HOMEOWNERS AND RENTERS!
YOU MAY QUALIFY FOR CASH or CREDIT FROM THE STATE
IF YOU PAY RENT OR PROPERTY TAXES
The Massachusetts “CIRCUIT BREAKER” TAX PROGRAM is for
persons 65 or over whose property taxes or who have 25% of their
rent exceed 10% of their annual gross income and who meet other
qualifying criteria. You may be eligible even if you receive a property
tax exemption through your city/town. Please come to the Front
Desk at the Senior Center for more information.
SPECIAL EVENING PRESENTATIONS / 5 WISHES
Day: Tuesday
Date: March 29
Time: 6:30 PM
Cost: Free
Preregistration Required
Northborough Senior Center is hosting a Seminar on ‘Health Care
Proxy & Living Will’ on March 29, 2016. It will be based on a document titled ‘Five Wishes’ which was created by the non-profit organization ‘Aging with Dignity’.
The session leaders from ICC will use the document to show you how
you can help yourself in preparing a Health Care Proxy and a living
Will. Since it is a difficult subject we are often not ready to address
it for ourselves and our loved ones. Although it is important, it is not
urgent and therefore the preparation is often postponed.
This seminar will help you to put your thoughts together using the
free ‘Five Wishes’ document. You can express your decisions about
the person you want to make Care Decisions for you when you cannot
(Health Care Proxy) and the kind of Medical Treatment you want or
don’t want (Living Will). By using the ‘Five Wishes’ document you can
express how comfortable you want to be, and how you want to be
treated and what you want your loved ones to know when you are
unable to make decisions for yourself..
The free presentation is jointly presented by Northboro Junior
Woman’s Club and Indian Circle of Caring USA Inc., (ICC). They have
undertaken this task to make it easier for everyone to self-initiate the
process of the preparation of a Health Care Proxy and a living Will.

FITNESS
QIGONG TAI CHI FOR
HEALTH AND VITALITY
Day: Fridays
Time: 9:00 – 10:30 AM
Cost: $3
Instructor: Rose Lee
Qigong is an ancient Chinese energy healing
system that deals with the vital life force.
Qi means "breath, or vital life force" and
gong means "to cultivate or work". Qigong
is a lifestyle, living in harmony with nature; a
way of exercise, meditation, and practices of
the body, mind, and spirit. So when you have
good Qi you have good life.
Tai Chi is a sequence of fluid movements
using the principles of Qigong movements to
help reduce stress and high blood pressure,
improve balance and flexibility to reduce
the risk of falling, and increase endurance
and mobility, Qigong Tai Chi is also a great
exercise for relieving arthritis pain.
In this class we will begin with Qigong
warm ups and then progress into Tai Chi
movements. Qigong Tai Chi is suitable for
people of all ages, standing or sitting. Please
wear loose clothing and comfortable shoes
when doing this exercise.
Instructor: Rose Lee has been teaching
Chinese martial arts for more than 20 years
in fitness clubs, retirement communities
and senior centers. She is an inspiring
enthusiastic instructor.
YOGA WITH GENE

BEGINNERS
CLASS:
TAI CHI FOR
ARTHRITIS
Day: Every
Tuesday
Time:
9:30 – 10:15 AM
Cost: $3/class
Instructor:
Helen Morin
Pre-Registration
Required
Start the New
Year with a new
outlook and a new you!
Tai for Arthritis beginners’ class, for all of you
who have asked we will be starting a new
class in January of 2016.
Tai Chi for Arthritis is based on studies from
the Arthritis Foundation that show people
with Arthritis should only move their joints
gently through the range of motion. Exercises
should minimize stress on the joints, they
should be performed with a slow steady
rhythm, without bouncing. People with
arthritis are encouraged to listen to their
bodies and not overdo it.
Day: Every Wednesday
Time: 11:30 AM
Cost: $3/class
Instructor: Gene Pacelli
A senior himself, Gene has been teaching
yoga for 32 years. Currently teaching eight
(8) classes a week of senior yoga at various
venues, he has also been teaching very
vigorous yoga classes at Harvard University
for the last 17 years, and in many health clubs
in the greater Boston area.
Sun style ( pronounced sung) is especially
appropriate for people with Arthritis because
agile steps characterize it, whenever you
step forward or backward you almost always
follow through with the other foot. This
forward and backward motion improves
mobility, which is one of the most important
objectives for helping people with arthritis.
We also do Qigong movements , which help
with breathing and relaxation. Qigong is
particularly effective for healing and repairing
cartilage , inflamed joints and tendons.
LINE DANCINGUPPER BEGINNER
Sun style is a higher stance, making it easier
for us , who are over the age of 45 , seeking
the health benefits of Tai Chi.
Day: Tuesdays
Time: 10:00 AM
Cost: $3/class
Instructor: Mary Dragon
Line dancing is a fun way to exercise, reduce
your stress and increase your energy. This
class is an upper beginner/easy intermediate
level. Popular and classic line dances are
put to all different types of music. You are
welcome to sit in on a class and see if this is
for you. Let’s Get Dancin’ !
The study from the Arthritis Foundation
found that people who performed Sun style
Tai Chi three times a week for 90 days had a
30% increase in strength, a 30% increase in
flexibility and a 30% increase in fitness.
I have personally found a profound decrease
in arthritic knee pain for the past 12 years.
So come join us for this new class and bring
a friend.

OUTREACH NOTES
People who think they are off the hook from filing an income tax
return could be missing out on a financial credit known as the
Circuit Breaker. Homeowners and renters, sixty five and older with
a maximum income of $57,000 for a single person ($85,000 for joint
filers) may be eligible for the Circuit Breaker. The Circuit Breaker is a
refundable credit of real estate taxes paid on their principle residence.
The maximum credit allowed for the 2015 tax year is $1,070. A credit may
also be possible for previous years in which an application was not filed.
The AARP Tax Clinic hosted at the Northborough Senior Center can
help to make sure that you don’t miss out on the opportunity for the
Circuit Breaker Tax Credit. AARP volunteers will help you file your
taxes electronically for free. Appointments are available through April
twelfth. Schedule at the front desk or by calling the Senior Center at
508-393-5035.
LIHEAP applications are also being accepted through April for assistance
with home energy costs. I am available to assist you with that process.

HOW DOES MEDICARE COVER VACCINES?
Medicare covers vaccines differently depending on which vaccine
you need. Some vaccines are covered by Part B, which is your
medical coverage. These include vaccines for the flu, pneumonia,
and in some cases Hepatitis B. Whether you have Original
Medicare or a Medicare Advantage plan, these vaccines will be
covered as preventive services at no cost. Additionally, if you
have been exposed to a dangerous disease, your vaccine will be
covered, but you may have a copay. For example, if you step on a
rusty nail, a tetanus shot will be covered.
All other vaccines are covered by your Medicare Part D drug
coverage. Both Medicare Advantage prescription drug plans and
stand-alone Part D plans must include all commercially available
vaccines on their drug formularies, including the vaccine for
shingles (herpes zoster). However, you may pay different amounts
depending on where you get vaccinated. Check directly with your
plan for coverage rules and costs.
Trained SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Everyone…on
Medicare) volunteers can help you! They offer free, confidential
counseling on all aspects of health insurance to anyone on
Medicare. To schedule a SHINE appointment, call your local Senior
Center. For other SHINE related matters, call 1-800-AGE-INFO
(1-800-243-4636), then press or say 3. Once you get the SHINE
answering machine, leave your name and number. A volunteer will
call you back, as soon as possible.

THE DOCTOR IS IN
Is it a COLD or ALLERGIES?
With Spring right around the corner you may ask yourself, do I have a cold or do
I have allergies? Both have overlapping symptoms that can make it difficult to
determine. Think about the time of year, if it's winter, you most likely have a cold, if
its Spring, Summer or Fall, then it could be either. A cold lasts between 5-10 days
whereas allergies can last weeks. This easy to use symptom checker will help you
determine if you have a cold or allergies.

12 ELDER LAW
ELDER LAW WITH FRANK AND MARY
by Arthur P. Bergeron
Arthur P. Bergeron is an elder law
attorney in the Trusts and Estates Group
at Mirick O’Connell.
DO YOU NEED TO DEFER
YOUR REAL ESTATE
TAXES? CAN YOU?
It’s that time of year again. The
Northborough tax rate has been set at 1.717% of your home’s
value this year, and you have probably received a bill and a notice
telling you to pay your taxes soon. You probably know you can
get various exemptions if, for example, you are over 70 years old
and/or a veteran, but the exemption amounts are fairly small.
However, if you were 65 years old as of last July 1, (or, if you are
married and living together, either you or your spouse was 65
years old), you can defer all your taxes until you either pass away
or move out of your home. The exemption was created by the
Commonwealth many years ago to help you and my friends
Frank and Mary, who want to live out their lives in their own
home. Unless you have a serious medical problem, though, your
real estate tax bill is probably your biggest required expense
after food. The tax deferral provision (technically, General Laws
Chapter 59, Section 5, clause 41A), gives you the ability to not
have to choose between food and taxes. You can qualify no
matter how much you have in assets.
There are a few requirements to qualify. First, you need to have
lived in Massachusetts for the past 10 years and lived in and
owned a Massachusetts home (not necessarily your current one)
for 5 years. Second, this is a deferral program. Eventually, the
taxes have to be paid. Your community has the right to charge
interest on the unpaid balance, up to a maximum of 8%. This
year, the rate in Northborough is 8%. The taxes, plus interest,
are due when you sell the house or 6 months after you (or you
and your spouse) have died. The back taxes do not become
due if you simply move out. Finally, there is a maximum annual
income limitation. In Northborough, your income for 2015 had to
be no more than $20,000 for a single person and $40,000 for a
married couple in order for you to qualify. If you have a mortgage,
your bank needs to agree to the deferral.
Looking ahead, communities have the power to change the
applicable interest rate and the allowable income each year.
The allowable interest rate can be as low as “0.” These numbers
can be changed at town meeting each year; however, in order for
next year’s numbers to change, town meeting needs to take place
this year. Your Council on Aging may have an interest in that.
If you have any questions regarding this topic or any other elder
law matter, you can contact me by phone, 508-860-1470 or
email me at [email protected]. Finally, you

a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, complete 1-hour training and pass a CORI check. Many

meeting to discuss issues and best practices. If you’re interested please call the Program Director,

Your Northborough Realtor
KEEPING YOUR APPLIANCES CLEAN
They can get grimy, dirty, and smell making them some of
the dirtiest things in your home. What are they? Your kitchen
appliances! Kitchen appliances are used every day and can show
their wear and tear if you are not careful. Adding this to your Spring
Cleaning list, using everyday household items and a little bit of
elbow grease, your kitchen appliances will look and smell like new.
THE DREADED DISHWASHER:
• Regularly clean the seams and liner of your dishwasher. This will
help reduce bacteria buildup and improve its effectiveness.
• Scour the inside of your dishwasher with a pad dipped in baking
soda to remove residue and stains from the interior surface and
crevices of your dishwasher.
• Run a regular cycle of wash with lemonade. The ascorbic
acid will help remove any remaining buildup, and leave your
dishwasher smelling clean and fresh.
OH! THE OVEN:
• Loosen baked-on food inside your oven using a plastic spatula.
• Use the juice from two squeezed lemons to clean your oven.
Place the juice into an oven safe dish, throw in the lemon
remains and bake 30 minutes at 250 degrees. Now you have a
clean and fresh smelling oven.
REFRIGERATOR REPEAT:
• Clean your refrigerator monthly. Remove food from your
refrigerator and discard
items that are aged or
expired.
• Create a paste from
1/2 cup of baking soda
with 1 tbsp of vinegar.
Apply the paste to a soft
scouring pad, and scrub.
Wipe away any residue
with a damp sponge,
• Vacuum the undercarriage
of your refrigerator.
• Wipe down the outside
with warm water and
vinegar or your favorite
cleaning product.
• Keep a box of baking
soda in the back of the
refrigerator to keep it
smelling fresh.

AGE-RELATED
VISION PROBLEMS
As you age, so do your eyes. You might find that
you have difficulty reading small print or that you
need brighter lighting at your desk. In addition, eye
diseases that could lead to more-serious vision
problems become more common with age. Consider
cataracts. A cataract is a clouding of the normally
clear lens of the eye. Most cataracts develop slowly
and don’t disturb eyesight early on. At first, stronger
lighting and eyeglasses can help you deal with
cataracts. Eventually cataracts can interfere with
your vision. Left untreated, cataracts can lead to
blindness. However, even with advanced cataracts,
vision can usually be restored with surgery. Be sure
to have regular checkups with your ophthalmologist
so that any developing vision problems can be
caught
early.

It’s the newest trend for adults – coloring! Remember how much fun you had coloring
when you were a child? That inner child of yours is anxious to come out and play
again. We’ll supply the pages as well as the crayons and colored pencils. There are not
many hobbies that we, as adults, enjoy that use eye-hand coordination. As kids, we
worked hard to develop motor skills and it’s important to preserve these skills as we
age. It may also help fight cognitive loss, especially if we choose challenging pieces
every so often. Sign up today for this fun and relaxing activity!
