Summer is Sizzling for the Friends of The Northborough Senior Center!
Don't forget the 50/50 raffles on Tuesday nights. The Drawings are every other month. 50%
of the money goes to the Friends and 50% goes to the raffle winners. We are also including
a special bottle of "First Crush Winery" wine with each drawing. Our tumblers will be on sale at the
50/50 raffle table.
The Friends are excited about Applefest! On September 18th, look for our special float in the parade.
It will be a joint effort including the Friends, the Council on Aging and the Senior Center. We will
also be selling our tumblers and "Sweep It Clean" brooms at the Friend's booth on Blake Street.
The Friend's Board has approved assisting the Senior Center to fund provisions to install shades for both the front
and back of the Multi-Purpose Room. This will be really helpful for folks attending events when the sun is shining
through.
Celebrating Northborough's Past & Present - A series of Historical presentations by Gary Hylander, PhD are being
funded by the Friend's and a great take! Look for more information about Dr. Hylander’s September presentation
in next month’s issue. Upcoming Fall fundraising events celebrating Northborough's 250th Anniversary include

MEALS ON WHEELS NEEDS
VOLUNTEERS
Volunteers are needed in Northborough to
deliver hot meals to homebound seniors.
Currently we are seeking a few drivers who
can fill in occasionally, rather than committing
to a specific day every week. Delivery time
is typically 10:30 AM – Noon, and drivers
usually deliver to 10-15 people on average.
Volunteers are required to have a valid driver’s
license, proof of insurance, complete a 1-hour
training and pass a CORI check. Many seniors
tell us the best part about meal delivery is the
friendly, caring volunteers. Please consider
joining us. For more information contact
Allison Park at 508-573-7246.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY
BayPath Elder Services’ Long Term Care
Ombudsman Program needs volunteers to
visit Long Term Care facilities to make sure
residents are getting the care and service they
expect. Volunteers work with residents, staff,
and families to achieve this end. The initial time
commitment is a three day certification process
then up to two hours a week in the nursing
home. Also there is a monthly volunteer meeting
to discuss issues and best practices. If you’re
interested please call the Program Director,
Mary Brooks at 508-573-7200 ex. 235.

BLOOD PRESSURE AND
WELLNESS CLINICS
The Northborough Senior Center is pleased to
partner with SALMON VNA & Hospice to
provide an on-site wellness nurse. The nurse
offers a clinic on the third Tuesday of every
month from 12:30 – 2:00 PM, which will include
general health screening and education, referrals,
preventative health care advice, medication
consultations, and glucose screening for those
individuals who bring their own glucometers.
Often times, people feel rushed when seeing
their physician. This wellness clinic is an
opportunity to sit with the nurse in a confidential
setting and review health questions.
Additionally, the Northborough Board of
Health has generously partnered with
SALMON VNA & Hospice to offer a blood
pressure clinic the first Tuesday of every
month and additionally, a blood pressure
clinic 2nd Thursday of the month. These
services are free of charge and are made
possible by the efforts and funding of the
Friends of the Northborough Senior Center,
Inc. and the Northborough Board of Health in
recognition of the importance of extending
public health services to our valuable senior
population.
HEALTH & WELLNESS
OUTREACH NOTES
On December 31, 2016 the older adult (ages 60+) population in Massachusetts will
for the first time be larger than the twenty and under population. This constitutes a
significant societal shift. To better inform the response to this change, profiles have
been developed of the sixty plus population for every community in Massachusetts.
Developed first in 2014, revised and updated in 2015, the profiles include the
following indicators: population characteristics, wellness and prevention, nutrition
and diet, mental health, chronic disease, living with disability, access to care,
service utilization, community variables and civic engagement, safety and economic
variables. The profiles can be studied on a community, county or statewide basis.
The Gerontology Institute at the University of Massachusetts in Boston conducted
the research at the request of the Healthy Aging of Massachusetts Collaborative.
The effort was funded by the Tufts Health Plan Foundation.
The profiles are more than a depiction of our older residents today. They help to
highlight the trends emerging as Baby Boomers age. The profiles can be used to
stimulate discussion, planning and problem solving.
The following is a sample of the Northborough profile; (www.mahealthyagingcollaborative.org) and in terms of strengths and weaknesses it, as expected, is a mixed
report. The population estimate of residents 65 and older is 11.4%. Fifty percent of
that subset are women. Fifty-five percent of the 65+ population reports four or more
chronic health problems. Fewer than 10% report no chronic health problems at all.
Sixty four percent of those 65 and older live on less than $50,000, 23.8 percent have
incomes of less than $20,000. Northborough is rated as a safe community by state
standards and assigned a walkability score of 65 ( a high score compared to other
measurements of the same indicator).
The Healthy Aging Collaborative realizes that aging does not occur in a vacuum
and communities that embrace this issue will not only support healthy aging but
improve the quality of life for all of its residents. The Northborough Senior Center is
one such example. It attends to the emotional and physical needs of older residents
as well as providing younger residents with a resource for information, guidance,
intergenerational involvement and more. It also addresses some of the issues
raised in the Northborough Profile. As we approach the population milestone that is
anticipated on December 31, 2016, consider reading the profile for Northborough and
other communities at Massachusetts Healthy Aging Collaborative (link above) and
what an age friendly community means to you.

MEDICARE DIABETES TESTING SUPPLIES
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
If you, a friend, or a loved one has Original Medicare and
uses diabetes testing supplies, you should know that
Medicare is continuing its National Mail-Order Program to
help you get quality supplies while saving money. Under
the program, you must use a Medicare approved national
mail-order contract supplier to pay for diabetes testing
supplies that are delivered to your home. If you don’t want
diabetes testing supplies delivered to your home, you can
go to any local store (pharmacy or storefront supplier)
that’s enrolled with Medicare and get your diabetes testing
supplies there.
If you do not use one of these Medicare approved ordering
methods, you may end up paying much more for your
supplies. If you have a Medigap policy, you may not owe
anything for your supplies. Be sure that your supplier has
your Medigap policy information when placing your order.
You also have certain protections when using a national
mail-order contract supplier. Suppliers must make sure
you get the prescribed brand of diabetes testing supplies
to avoid an adverse medical outcome and must never
influence or try to convince you to switch your supplies to
another brand.
To find a current list of contract suppliers, visit Medicare.
gov/supplier or call 1-800-MEDICARE.
For assistance with any Medicare issue, contact the SHINE
Program. Trained SHINE volunteers offer free, confidential
counseling on all aspects of Medicare and related health
insurance programs. To schedule a SHINE appointment, call
your local Senior Center. For other SHINE related matters,
call 1-800-AGE-INFO (1-800-243-4636), then press or say
3. Once you get the SHINE answering machine, leave your
name and number. A volunteer will call you back, as soon
as possible.

Tai Chi for Arthritis is based on studies from
the Arthritis Foundation that show people with
Arthritis should only move their joints gently
through the range of motion. Exercises should
minimize stress on the joints, they should be
performed with a slow steady rhythm, without
bouncing. People with arthritis are encouraged
to listen to their bodies and not overdo it.
Sun style ( pronounced sung) is especially
appropriate for people with Arthritis because
agile steps characterize it, whenever you step
forward or backward you almost always follow
through with the other foot. This forward and
backward motion improves mobility, which
is one of the most important objectives for
helping people with arthritis.
We also do Qigong movements, which help
with breathing and relaxation. Qigong is
particularly effective for healing and repairing
cartilage , inflamed joints and tendons.
Sun style is a higher stance, making it easier for
us , who are over the age of 45 , seeking the
health benefits of Tai Chi.
The study from the Arthritis Foundation found
that people who performed Sun style Tai
Chi three times a week for 90 days had a 30%
increase in strength, a 30% increase in flexibility
and a 30% increase in fitness.
I have personally found a profound decrease in
arthritic knee pain for the past 12 years. So come
join us for this new class and bring a friend.
10 ELDER LAW
ELDER LAW WITH FRANK AND MARY
by Arthur P. Bergeron
Article Provided By
Arthur P. Bergeron is an elder law
attorney in the Trusts and Estates Group
at Mirick O’Connell.
DON’T LET LACK OF
PREPARATION GET IN THE WAY
OF YOUR SUMMERTIME FUN:
KNOW THE FACTS ABOUT
YOUR HEALTH CARE PROXY
While you’re planning that great summer
vacation or general summer escape, this might not be a bad
time to review your Health Care Proxy (HCP), one of the most
important legal documents to have in an emergency. Remember, if
you are suddenly incapacitated and can’t make a medical decision
on your own, no one has the legal right to make it for you except
the person (your “agent”) you have named in your HCP. No one,
that is, except your court-appointed Guardian.
Here are four facts about your Health Care Proxy:
First and foremost, the agent you appoint in your HCP can make
all medical decisions for you, even if you wouldn’t like them. Socalled “living wills” or other documents in which you express your
wishes regarding how you might like to be treated are all legally
unenforceable in Massachusetts. So think twice before you name
the agent in your HCP. It may be a matter of life and death.
Second, you can only name one agent at a time. You cannot name
all of your children, or even two of your children, to act jointly as
your agent. Doctors and other health care professionals want to
know the one person they need to listen to in case of your health
care emergency. You can, and should, name a successor agent,
though, in case your primary agent is traveling, sick or otherwise
unavailable.
Third, when you execute a new HCP form, you have thereby
revoked all previous ones. So when you go to the emergency room
and the nurse asks you to sign one of their one-page Proxy forms,
remember that by doing so you are revoking the one that you
spent time and money developing with your lawyer. A good tip is
to keep a copy on a flash drive on your key ring or in your purse.
Fourth, you can always revoke your HCP. The statute (General
Laws Chapter 201D) that created your ability to give someone the
power to make your health care decisions is very specific in stating
that you are presumed to be competent and, therefore, have the
power to revoke the proxy at any time.
So do yourself a favor this summer, designate a Health Care Proxy
(or update the one you have), put it on a flash drive, and take it
with you whenever and wherever you travel. Then go out and have
a great summer!

Sail the Caribbean with Holland America
January 18-January 29, 2017
The 11 Day Southern Caribbean Wayfarer leaves Ft. Lauderdale, FL
and calls on the beautiful islands of:
St. Maarten - Explore the Dutch and French sides
of this island with amazing shopping and food,
beautiful beaches like Orient Bay, and a must-do
is watching the planes land over Maho Beach into
SXM airport
St. Lucia - Known as “the Hawaii of the Caribbean”,
this island is one of the most stunning with rainforests,
volcanos, black sand beaches, waterfalls, and the Piton
mountains. Take a catamaran day sail and snorkel or an
aerial tram ride into the rainforest, enjoy the beach or
take a dip in the famous mud baths for a natural
spa treatment.
Barbados - Nicknamed “Little England” since it is the
only Caribbean island governed by only one colonial
power, Great Britain. Barbados is known for it’s
beautiful coastline and beaches and one of the most
popular experiences is snorkeling with the large
hawksbill and green turtles.
Martinique - A volcanic, mountainous island with a French,
cosmopolitan feel, Martinique has been off the radar for
many cruise lines so it is really undeveloped as a port.
Martinique is also known for their rum distilleries, of which
many can be toured while there for the day. Another
option is to take the ferry to Pointe du Bout and check out
the shops and restaurants on the way to the beach.
$1989/person + tax
Antigua - Known for having 365 beaches, one for every
day of the year. The turquoise water is perfect for
taking a dip, snorkeling, boating, horseback riding, and
kayaking. Antigua is also known for it’s British roots and
was once a very important naval base and you can still
visit English Harbour and Nelson’s Dockyard.

pricing is guaranteed until
August 15, 2016 and then

jewelry, watches, liquor, and perfume. If you pick one port
to shop until you drop, this is it! Magen’s Bay, Coki Beach,
Sapphire Beach or taking the ferry to St. John to visit
Trunk Bay, all of these beaches are beautiful to visit for
the day.
Half Moon Cay, Bahamas - Holland America own’s this

Your Northborough Realtor
CAN A ROOM LOOK BIGGER?
If you are selling your home or just looking to redecorate, one
thing you may want to do is make the rooms look bigger. Here are
some tips on how to make the rooms in your home appear larger:
• Use an oversize mirror to enhance the effect of light. Mirrors reflect
both natural and artificial light making a room bigger and brighter.
• Glass-topped tables and see-through furniture can create an illusion
that enhances the room with a more open flow.
• Clear the clutter. There’s nothing that makes a small space feel even
more cramped than having too much stuff. Rooms with everything in
place have a certain flow to them. A room without clutter has a more
streamline look and a larger appearance.
• Light colored walls will also make your rooms appear bigger. Colors
such as cream, beige, light grayish-blue and lavender will reflect and
multiply the light giving the room an airy feel.
• Use dual-purpose furniture. Furniture that doubles as storage increases
the function of each space. Pieces like an entryway bench with storage
space or a flip-top ottoman are great ways to combine furniture and
function.
• Use vertical space to create storage and maximize those out-of-theway areas in your home.
• Utilize those out-of-the-way nooks like the area
under a flight of stairs.
Sometimes taking these easy steps make you feel like you just
gained more space. Give it a try on one of your rooms and see
the difference!

ASK A PHARMACIST
ASK A
PHARMACIST
A leading
pharmacist
answers your
most frequently
asked questions.
Do you have Ostomy, Urological,
Wound Care or Incontinence supplies
delivered to your home? Don’t deal
with a faceless 800 number,
deal with a local, family business
you can trust, call Bouvier’s!
AGE-RELATED
VISION PROBLEMS
As you age, so do your eyes. You might find that
you have difficulty reading small print or that you
need brighter lighting at your desk. In addition, eye
diseases that could lead to more-serious vision
problems become more common with age. Consider
cataracts. A cataract is a clouding of the normally
clear lens of the eye. Most cataracts develop slowly
and don’t disturb eyesight early on. At first, stronger
lighting and eyeglasses can help you deal with
cataracts. Eventually cataracts can interfere with
your vision. Left untreated, cataracts can lead to
blindness. However, even with advanced cataracts,
vision can usually be restored with surgery. Be sure
to have regular checkups with your ophthalmologist
so that any developing vision problems can be
caught
early.

It’s the newest trend for adults – coloring! Remember how much fun you had coloring
when you were a child? That inner child of yours is anxious to come out and play
again. We’ll supply the pages as well as the crayons and colored pencils. There are not
many hobbies that we, as adults, enjoy that use eye-hand coordination. As kids, we
worked hard to develop motor skills and it’s important to preserve these skills as we
age. It may also help fight cognitive loss, especially if we choose challenging pieces
every so often. Sign up today for this fun and relaxing activity!
