National OASIS News
The OASIS Institute • Summer 2016
What does OASIS mean to you?
OASIS is many things to many people. Recently we
asked people what OASIS means in their lives. Here
are a few responses to brighten your day. Thanks to
all who took the time to respond!
Oasis offers terrific opportunities to be involved in
the community, to learn, and to be challenged. It is a
joy to learn just for the sake of learning without the
pressure that most of us felt in college.
Vivien Steinberg, Maryland
For me, it smoothed the transition from work into
the retirement world -- keeping busy with presenting
programs, attending classes, volunteering in different
capacities, and making new friends who share my
enthusiasm for learning.
Mona Resnik, St. Louis
Oasis helps me stay connected, not only with people with similar interests but also with the younger
generation through Oasis Tutoring – a chance to give
back in some small way.
Mary Pickerell, Washington Metro

Oasis is a chance to get out and meet other people
who have the same interests, ideas and passions that
I do; a chance to be a student again!
Holly, Syracuse
I’ve been retired for six years. I miss the challenge
of developing things, but I am committed to lifelong
learning in multiple ways. OASIS helps me do that.
Lynn Edward Costlow, Albuquerque
Oasis is my fountain of youth. Every interest is
nourished by the wonderful variety of lectures,
classes, new friends and, of course, the fabulous
staff. A dear friend introduced me to Oasis. I’m
grateful every day that I listened!

Message from Ann Cunningham
Happy spring from OASIS Rochester!
As I write this, the snow is melting, the birds are singing, the spring
flowers are popping up earlier than expected and the snow birds are
travelling north. We have a lot of wonderful classes taught by amazing
teachers to offer this trimester. We hope you will join us.
As always, my door is open and I’m “all ears” waiting for your thoughts,
suggestions and program ideas. I have enjoyed getting to know so many of
you these past few months as I have gotten settled. I recognize so many faces,
but I may not always remember your name, so please wear your name tag.
Are you on Facebook? Have you “liked” our OASIS Rochester
Facebook page? I am trying to use the page more and more to share
interesting articles, information about our classes, teachers and upcoming
events. Feel free to invite your friends as well.
Have a wonderful spring and summer and enjoy all the opportunities
we have to offer this trimester!

discussion of style, design theory, technological developments and the
architectural profession. The course hopes to provide an understanding
of “modern architecture” as an historical development and as a
contemporary activity. From John Soane to Moshe Safdie, from the
Crystal Palace to the Seagram Building, it will provide an opportunity
for an informed understanding of architecture’s functional and social
characteristics.

Productions
The Chicano mural painting movement of the 1960s and 70s produced
thousands of wall paintings, many of them stunning works of art.
Besides their artistic value, the murals were visual messages about
Hispanic heritage and the social and political concerns of the Hispanic
community. Some murals treated social justice issues in a broad context;
an example is the story of “minorities” in the history of California, as
treated in The Great Wall mural in Burbank, California. We’ll focus
on murals in Southern California and discuss what they meant to the
professional artists and the regular members of the communities that
produced them. The messages of many of these public works of art
continue to be relevant today.

Edward Albee-A Singular Journey
218
Michael Arve
“Edward Albee, the leading American playwright of his generation,
has been confounding, challenging and stimulating theater audiences
for over half a century. Since the premiere of his first staged work,
“The Zoo Story” (1959), Mr. Albee has unsparingly considered
subjects outside the average theatergoer’s comfort zone: the capacity
for sadism and violence within American society; the fluidness of
human identity; the dangerous irrationality of sexual attraction and,
always, the irrefutable presence of death. Born in 1928 in Washington,
D.C., Mr. Albee first made his name with short, startling works
including “The Sandbox” (1960) and “The American Dream” (1961).
These works linked him with the European theater of the absurd. The
play that brought him international celebrity, however, was a realistic
portrait of marriage as a battlefield, “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”
(1962), a succes de scandale both on stage and (in 1966) on film. While
he never matched the popular appeal of “Virginia Woolf,” all of Mr.
Albee’s best works are notable for their probing intellectual breadth
and scalpel-edged elegance of language. They include “Tiny Alice”
(1965), “A Delicate Balance” (1966) and “Three Tall Women” (1994).
Mr. Albee is a three-time Pulitzer Prize winner. Join Michael as he
traces, through his plays, the singular journey that is Edward Albee’s
life.

Sonnets of Shakespeare

Frank Judge, President, Rochester Poets
This course is for those who’ve written poetry at any level and for
those who want to learn how. The class can be taken as often as a
member wants since it’s a workshop rather than a presentation of set
content covered by the end of the session. While this is NOT a course
on writing traditional forms like the sonnet, sestina, etc., the class does
consider some short forms like haiku, tanka, and cinquain. Students
aren’t required to write in meter and rhyme; instead, they’re encouraged
to use whatever is comfortable for them. Class and home exercises
are geared to tapping into our creativity, using our experiences and
imagination to develop and sharpen the habit of writing. There are no
required texts for the course. A list of useful texts and resources will
be given to registrants before the course begins.

Meditation and Prayer Flags
329
Susan Carmen-Duffy
Prayer flags date back thousands of years, to pre-Buddhist Tibet.
Traditionally primary colors were created on cloth. Symbols and
writings embodied the elements – earth, water, fire, air and space. The
flags were used for healing ceremonies. This workshop invites you
to create your own prayer flags. We will create on pre-stitched cloth
and use a more contemporary mixed media approach to this spiritual
art. NO experience is required. Simply bring your sense of adventure
with you. For what might you create a prayer flag? Your intent might
be for peace in the world, a burden on your heart or simply for light in
the world. Your options are limitless. Susan is the joyful owner and

who secretly took over 100,000 photographs that went unseen during
her lifetime. Since buying her work by chance at auction, amateur
historian John Maloof has crusaded to put this prolific photographer in
the history books. Maier’s strange and riveting life and art are revealed

Kathy Johncox, Local Author
A cookbook author and an Irish
poet silently blame each other for
cookbooks and poems destroyed
in a fire. A beef barbeque dinner
at a dude ranch offers a computer
programmer new hope. A pasta
dinner shows a recently remarried
woman the true colors of her
new husband. Women and men
struggle with idiosyncrasies and
pre-conceived notions in situations
where food is key--offering either
physical or spiritual nourishment or
pleasure, or appearing as a metaphor
for love or misguided passion. Local
author Kathy Johncox, an army Brat
born in Missouri to a military family, has developed story ideas and
written stories in eight states and three foreign countries. Her debut
short story collection, “The Last Generation of Women Who Cook,”
contains 16 stories about food that satisfy the hunger for a good story.

world at The Lamberton Conservatory. The first and third classes

Mr. Tiffany’s Search For Beauty

Donald Hall, retired Director, Strasenburgh Planetarium
Was Louis Comfort Tiffany an artist or a merchandising genius? The
answer is “yes” to both. LCT started out as a painter, then moved to
interior design, and finally to craft media such as glass, mosaic, clay,
metal and jewels to accomplish his search for beauty. His famous
stained glass windows fill many Rochester churches, and we’ll see
them all during class. Tiffany lamps barely attracted any collector
interest in the 1950’s, yet today sell for hundreds of thousands of
dollars. Join Don as he uses scores of beautiful visuals to show and tell

Grand Gallery: Robert Polidori Exhibit 512
Memorial Art Gallery Staff
Chronophagia (which translates as “the eating of
time”) features 58 large-scale color photographs
by Robert Polidori, who received his MFA from
SUNY Buffalo in 1980. His metier is examining
built environments that have been altered by human or natural
intervention: New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina,
Chernobyl as a post-disaster wasteland, the Middle East devastated
by years of warfare, the palace of Versailles undergoing an extended
renovation. Usually devoid of human subjects, these photographs are
suffused with human stories waiting to be told. “Where you point the
camera is a question,” Polidori says, “and the image you get is a kind of
answer.” The exhibition was curated by Daniel Strong, a former MAG
intern who has been Associate Director and Curator of Exhibitions at
the Faulconer Gallery, Grinnell (IA) College since 1999. This tour, for

Deborah Benjamin Presents: The Death of Perry Many Paws
518
Deborah Benjamin, Local Author
Tamsen Mack, a successful children’s author, discovers her husband’s
reclusive uncle in his study with a letter opener in his neck. Scattered
around the room are a set of clues he left behind: a seventy year old
photo, one page from his autobiography and over seventy yellowed
newspapers from 1938 each dated April 1. An eerie quote from Edgar
Alan Poe and a friend’s bloody shirt push Tamsen’s writer’s curiosity
into over-drive. Tamsen plunges into the murder investigation with
ties to her own circle of friends, which leaves her to wonder who
among her friends she can really trust. Deborah Benjamin, author of
this exciting book, started writing at a young age, but decided to write
a mystery series based on a group of Women of a Certain Age. She
will share this book along with her new book, Death of a Hot Flasher.

Meditation is not just about being quiet nor is it about the absence
of challenges. It is about being the witness or observer of one’s life
experiences. Through increasing awareness, we learn to transcend the
ego that thrives on drama, pain and suffering. Meditation develops
concentration and promotes deep relaxation, with the brain emitting
alpha and theta waves. These waves have the power to calm the mind,
relax the body and balance and harmonize the discordant energies
within us. When we allow meditation to become a part of our lives, we
are, in reality, reconnecting to the sacred silence that resides in us and
allows the inner peace to permeate in our outer life. The sessions will
include the use of the crystal singing bowls and will demonstrate how
these sounds can expedite one’s healing and transformation.

Practicing Meditation and Mindfulness 209
in Daily Life
Usha Shah
Mindfulness is a state of active, open attention on the present. When
one is mindful, one is observing one’s thoughts and feelings from
a distance, without judging them as good or bad. Instead of letting
your life pass you by, mindfulness means living in the moment and
awakening to the experience. Scientific studies have shown that
mindfulness practices improve physical, mental and emotional
health. The class includes a short meditation and a dialogue on how
mindfulness practices can be used to overcome life’s challenges such
as loneliness, alienation, aging, relationships, trauma, illness, physical
pain and death. Examine how these difficulties can become pathways
to greater psychological freedom.

The Everyday Einstein: Applications Of Aphorisms From A Brilliant Mind
212
Marlene Caroselli
This class presents several brain-sharpening techniques, each based
on a quotation from Einstein himself. For example, he maintained “the
important thing is not to stop questioning.” That assertion serves as
the introduction to the Five-Why Technique. Einstein also advised that
“once you can accept the universe as matter expanding into nothing
that is something, wearing stripes with plaid comes easily.” This
quotation segues into a discussion of oppositional thinking and the
creative process. You’ll leave with non-physics insights into the brain
of this remarkable man and some new tools for exploring the “black
holes” of your own universe. Dr. Marlene Caroselli is an author,
artist, teacher-without-a-classroom and a proud septuagenarian. She

Natural Alternatives for Pain Management
509
Emily Carpenter, CA
Pain management can often feel like a full time job for anyone living
with chronic pain. What’s the point of retiring if it’s replaced by the
job of trying to feel good? Masking the pain with prescription or overthe-counter drugs can often hide an underlying cause or condition.
Discover natural alternatives to prevent and reduce or eliminate
chronic pain. Many alternative methods will be explored in this session
such as Reiki, massage therapy, chiropractic care, diet, exercise,
aromatherapy, homeopathy, and botanical medicine. A materials fee
of $20 is payable to the instructor at the time of class. Emily Carpenter
is a Certified Aromatherapist and Reiki practitioner who also studies
homeopathy and botanical medicine. She blogs about her experiences

years. His curiosity pays off for us as we stroll and Don tells us about
some of the houses, ranging from cottages to mansions built in an
early housing development in the midst of farm land which wasn’t
even within the city limits of Rochester. You will hear about, and
walk the path of, an earlier racetrack that existed here before James
A. Vick took over the land for his seed garden. In just seven years, his
seed business had outgrown that space and homes were being built
beginning in 1872.

Opera is Murder
303
Chuck Lundeen, Former lecturer, Guild of Mercury Opera
Rochester; former Board member, Friends of Eastman Opera
If you’re one of those people who equates listening to opera with
murder, give us a chance to prove you dead wrong! Our record for
converting opera haters to opera lovers is excellent…if you’ll just
give it a chance. Keeping in mind that opera is never to be taken too
seriously, we will look at 4 operas whose stories revolve around at
least one murder: Cherubini’s MEDEA (1797), Donizetti’s LUCREZIA
BORGIA (1833), Cilea’s ADRIANA LECOUVREUR (1902), and
Richard Strauss’s SALOME (1905). If you like symphonic music, all
aspects of theatre, and/or good singing, you owe it to yourself to spend
part of your summer taking a look at opera. Don’t worry about those
foreign languages—we have subtitles to take care of that. If you’re
already an opera lover, these selections are definitely “off the beaten

Dan Hollands, Vice President, Funeral Consumers Alliance
Our members said they learned a lot from this presentation! The
non-profit Funeral Consumers Alliance has been educating people
since 1957 about the advantages of pre-planning their own funerals.
Consumers are able to take a great burden off of their loved ones if
they shop around for services when they are not under pressure. The
Alliance guides people on how to make their own plans, and provides
price guides for five different plans which can be used for comparison
shopping. Don’t be an uninformed consumer on this important issue.

Genesee Brew House Tour
323
Sharon Pratt
The Stone-Tolan House Historic Site is the oldest in the county. For
over 200 years, it has been many things to many people. To Orringh
and Elizabeth Stone it was home and work; a farm and tavern. To
neighbors, it was a place to gather for a drink in the tavern room, and
plan the government for their new town of Brighton. To the traveler, it
was shelter from the wilderness of early 19th century New York. The
house has never been moved, it’s firmly rooted on the original site.
What will this place be to you? Decide after you’ve experienced the
tavern room, kitchen (that’s the part built in 1792), parlor-bedroom,
summer kitchen, orchard herb and kitchen gardens, smokehouse, and
privy. The Stone-Tolan House represents the private and the public
activities of a household and rural tavern on the frontier in Brighton,
NY between 1790 and 1820. This will be a walking tour, so please be
prepared with comfortable shoes!
Wednesday May 25 10:00 - 11:30

Stone Tolan Historic Site
The Genesee Brew House has transformed the 9,200 square-foot space
into a beer destination, featuring interactive exhibits, multimedia
content, gift shop, Pilot Brewery and pub-style restaurant. The Brew
House was created to capture and share with you the long history
of The Genesee Brewery - one of the largest and oldest continually
operating breweries in America. But the Brewery itself isn’t half as
interesting as the beer and the people who make it. The Brew House
and the building was in fact part of the original Genesee Brewery
campus more than 100 years ago. We’ve taken this building and
transformed it into a special place that tells our story and the story of
brewing beer in Rochester, New York. The tour begins at 1:00. You
may come early or stay late for lunch or beer tastings on your own.
Enjoy and drink responsibly!

Ronnie Reitter
Just southeast of Rochester, New York, in the town of Victor, lies
Ganondagan, the site of a Native American community that was
a flourishing, vibrant center for the Seneca people. Americans
everywhere owe a debt to the Seneca people; as one of the six nations
comprising the Iroquois Confederacy. Their democratic ideals
served as an inspiration for the U.S. Constitution. From politics
and the environmental movement to food and medicine, the roots of
contemporary society can be traced back to this historic site right in
Rochester’s back yard. Visit this site where thousands of Seneca lived
300 years ago, tour a full-size replica of a 17th-century Seneca Bark
Longhouse, and learn about the destruction of Ganondagan, Town of
Peace, in 1687. There is a good amount of walking and some steps
involved in this tour.

Monroe County Office for the Aging
The Monroe County Office for the Aging (MCOFA) has served
as the designated Area Agency on Aging for Monroe County since
1973. It has the responsibility to plan, coordinate, collaborate,
fund, report and advocate for community based programs and
services that meet the needs of Monroe County residents age 60
and over, and their informal family caregivers of any age.
Services are provided through MCOFA funded sub-contractor
agencies. MCOFA then monitors these services annually to
ensure service quality, program effectiveness and positive
outcomes are delivered to those older adults. MCOFA programs
are primarily targeted to individuals with the greatest social
and/or economic need, with particular emphasis on serving
the low income minority population that typically reside in
their own homes in underserved areas within Monroe County.
May - August 2016
Since 2005, MCOFA has also administered New York Connects,
the officially designated Aging, Disability and Resource Center for
Monroe County. NY Connects provides information, assistance,
analysis and planning to meet the current and future long term care
needs for people of all ages residing in Monroe County.
The 2010 census indicates that Monroe County’s population of
adults age 60 and over has increased from 123,011 to 145,084
within the past ten years. This increase heightens the importance
for MCOFA to continue to provide a wide array of high quality
community services in the most cost efficient manner as possible.
MCOFA funded programs assist people to remain independent and
safe in their own homes, and keep our community rich in spirit in
helping people to excel at aging well.
