Catholic Health
Administrative and regional
training center serves as
gateway to downtown
BY JAMES FINK
R
emember what was at the corner of Genesee and Oak streets
not long ago? A four-acre field
where the homeless slept, hardly an inviting welcome to downtown
Buffalo.
That scenario changed three years
ago when Catholic Health teamed
with Uniland Development Co. to
use the property for its corporate
headquarters and a regional training
center. The resulting six-story,
140,000-square-foot building is a
snapshot of the region’s development
resurgence.
Now when cars come off the
Kensington Expressway, they’re
greeted by a new, $48 million office
building where nearly 700 people
work.

“In an evolving Buffalo skyline,
we’re proud to have a facility that
is not only attractive but one that is
highly efficient and environmentally
friendly, standing at the gateway to
downtown,” said Joseph McDonald,
Catholic Health president and CEO.
The organization’s presence was
the catalyst for a wave of restaurants
opening along the Ellicott and
Genesee streets gateway to downtown.
Restaurants such as Marco’s and
Toutant opened in part because of the
economic development ripple effect in
the central business district of Catholic
Health and its many employees.
“We have woven ourselves into the
fabric of what’s become a vibrant and
growing urban center,” McDonald
said.

Catholic Health consolidated
eight offices and operations into the
building. It considered a number of
suburban and Buffalo locations before
settling in late 2012 on what had
been called Block 21 in the Elm-Oak
Corridor. The health system estimates
it is saving more than $1.5 million
annually in efficiency costs.
The project was one of the
first major health care-related
developments to cross the Kensington
Expressway and maintain a
connection to the Buffalo Niagara
Medical Campus. Others that followed
include Uniland’s multi-tenant
building on nearby Ellicott Street.
