$decade$of$service$to$Northland$students,$parents,$and$patrons.$$The$school$ opened$in$1965a66$as$the$second$high$school$in$the$North$Kansas$City$School$District.$$Oak$Park$colors$have$been$ blue$on$blue:$$Navy$and$Columbia$blue$since$opening$in$September$of$1965.$$The$mascot$has$remained$the$ Northmen$since$opening$and$the$students$have$continued$to$refer$to$themselves$as$the$Oakies.$$The$colors$and$ mascot$were$chosen$by$the$incoming$OP$students$with$the$help$of$Dr.$Dan$Kahler$who$served$as$the$principal$for$the$ first$21$years.$$ $ Since$opening,$Oak$Park$has$been$focused$on$doing$what$is$best$for$students.$$Craig$Shuemaker,$a$1967$OPHS$ graduate,$designed$our$school$crest.$$The$tree$represents$the$beautiful$oak$trees$in$the$grove$on$the$southeast$side$of$ our$campus.$$The$Northman$speaks$for$great$school$spirit.$$The$star$is$each$student's$guide$to$the$future.$$ Scholarship$is$focused$on$the$achievement$of$our$students.$$The$leaf$symbolizes$the$alumni$and$what$they$give$back$ to$Oak$Park.$ $ Oak$Park$Senior$High$School$began$with$the$approval$of$a$$3,200,000$bond$to$build$a$facility$that$would$hold$2,000$ pupils.$Oak$Park$was$the$first$airaconditioned$high$school$in$North$Kansas$City$Schools.$$The$school$was$designed$to$ allow$a$significant$amount$of$natural$light$and$included$several$courtyards$within$the$school.$$Oak$Park$was$awarded$ an$architectural$award$for$its$progressive$design.$$ $ Oak$Park$was$one$of$the$first$schools$to$implement$computer$and$business$classes.$$The$progressive$and$innovative$ nature$of$Oak$Park$continues$today.$$ Alma'Mater' Oak$Park$High$of$you$we$sing,$ On$Thursdays,$classes$will$dismiss$at$1:55$p.m.$in$order$to$provide$designated$time$from$2:05a2:45$for$teachers$to$ collaborate$with$each$other$on$common$assessments,$curriculum$and$instructional$strategies.$$During$that$time,$ students$are$not$allowed$to$meet$with$teachers.$$Students$who$are$not$involved$in$any$afteraschool$activity$are$ required$to$leave$campus$by$2:05$p.m.$$Afteraschool$activities,$including$practices,$rehearsals$and$meetings$may$not$ begin$before$3:00$p.m.$on$Thursdays.$$Students$who$are$involved$in$afteraschool$activities$may$remain$on$campus$ and$must$report$to$a$designated$area$of$the$Cafeteria$or$the$Library$Media$Center.$Those$students$who$remain$on$ campus$for$afteraschool$activities$will$not$be$allowed$to$leave$those$designated$areas$unless$called$out$by$a$ parent/guardian.$$$ ! ' ATHLETICS'&'ACTIVITIES' We$encourage$all$students$to$participate$in$school$athletics$and$activities.$$Being$involved$in$the$life$of$your$school$will$ help$you$feel$part$of$the$community,$strengthen$your$connection$to$Oak$Park$and$help$you$feel$pride$in$your$ accomplishments.$$Any$student$at$Oak$Park$High$School$who$meets$Missouri$State$High$School$Athletic$Association$ (MSHSAA)$eligibility$requirements$may$try$out$for$the$activities/athletics$listed$below.$$These$students$will$also$be$ required$to$sign$the$North$Kansas$City$School$District$Activity/Athletic$Commitment$Form$(see$the$North$Kansas$City$ Schools$High$School$Activities$Handbook$for$2016a2017)$and$pay$a$required$participation$fee.$$Oak$Park$High$School$ is$a$member$of$the$Greater$Kansas$City$Suburban$Athletic$Conference$and$in$2016a2017$we$are$in$the$conference’s$ White$Division.$$$$ $ As$a$member$of$any$of$these$MSHSAA$recognized$team$and/or$individual$sports,$you$will$wear$an$Oak$Park$High$ School$uniform$and$represent$our$school$and$community$in$competition$in$front$of$audiences.$$We$expect$Northmen$ and$Oakies$in$uniform$to$display$the$highest$character$and$sportsmanship,$including$trustworthiness,$respect,$ responsibility,$fairness,$caring$and$citizenship.$$When$we$win,$we$will$win$graciouslye$when$we$lose,$we$lose$with$ dignity.$$BLUE!ON!BLUE,!THROUGH!&!THROUGH!!!$$ $ ' 8 ACADEMIC'ELIGIBILITY' All$possible$guidance$will$be$given$to$every$student$and$parent$to$see$that$all$students$are$eligible$for$activities/sports.$$ However,$ultimately,$the$responsibility$for$eligibility$is$up$to$each$student/family.$$The$following$are$some$of$the$ requirementse$ $ •$ Students$must$be$currently$enrolled$in$and$regularly$attending$courses$that$offer$a$minimum$of$80%$of$credit$ offered$the$preceding$semester$of$attendance.$One$full$credit$of$summer$school$work$may$be$counted$as$part$of$ the$preceding$semester$credits$to$determine$eligibility$for$fall$semester$if$the$summer$school$course$work$is$ required$core$courses$for$graduation$requirements.$ •$ For$freshman,$they$have$to$be$taking$6$full$credit$courses$in$the$semester$in$which$they$are$participating$in$a$ MSHSAA$activity.$In$the$second$semester$of$the$freshman$year,$freshmen$must$have$passed$6$full$credit$courses$ in$order$to$be$eligible$to$participate.$ nd •$ For$first$semester$sophomores,$they$must$have$passed$6$full$credit$courses$of$their$2 $semester$freshman$year$ (Freshman$Flex$class$did$not$count$towards$eligibility)$in$order$to$be$eligible$to$participate.$They$must$be$enrolled$ in$7$full$credit$courses.$ •$ For$second$semester$sophomores,$all$juniors,$and$all$seniors,$they$must$have$passed$7$full$credit$courses$the$ previous$semester$and$they$must$be$taking$7$full$credit$courses$in$the$semester$in$which$they$participate.$ $ If$you$are$unsure$about$a$specific$situation$regarding$Academic$Eligibility,$please$check$with$Casey$Vokolek,$Activities$ Director,$by$calling$Oak$Park$at$321a5320.' Student'Activities'Pass' We$encourage$nonaparticipating$students$to$purchase$an$Activities$Pass$to$attend$school$athletic$events$and$cheer$ the$Northmen$on$to$victory.$$We$have$a$long$winning$tradition$at$OP$that$will$continue$in$2016a2017!$$A$student$ Activities$Pass$may$be$purchased$for$$40.$$This$allows$one$student$admission$to$all$2016a2017$Oak$Park$HOME$ contests$for$football,$volleyball,$soccer,$wrestling,$and$basketball.$The$Activity$Pass$is$not$good$for$AWAY$events.'!! $ Sportsmanship:'The'Mark'of'Excellence' Improved$sportsmanship$at$interscholastic$events$has$become$a$point$of$emphasis$nationwide.$$We$value$and$ appreciate$good$sportsmanship$and$expect$that$the$adults$of$our$Oak$Park$Family$will$voluntarily$observe$the$ guidelines$we$have$established$for$students,$both$spectators$and$participants$alike.$ $ The$Missouri$State$High$School$Activities$Association$(MSHSAA)$has$listed$and$publicized$five$fundamentals$of$good$ sportsmanship.$$The$fundamentals$are:$ $ 1.$ Show$respect$for$the$opponent$at$all$times.$ 2.$ Show$respect$for$the$officials.$ 3.$ Know,$understand$and$appreciate$the$rules$of$the$contest.$ 4.$ Maintain$selfacontrol$at$all$times.$ 5.$ Recognize$and$appreciate$skill$in$performance$regardless$of$affiliation.$ $ In$addition,$the$administrators$of$the$member$schools$of$the$Greater$Kansas$City$Suburban$Athletic$Conference$have$ identified$good$sportsmanship$as$a$key$to$successful$competition$in$our$conference$schools.$$Oak$Park$students$ attending$athletic$contests$as$fans$and$spectators$are$expected$to$follow$these$guidelines:$ $ 1.$ Cheers$and$slogans$should$be$positive$statements$focused$on$support$of$Oak$Park,$not$negative$or$derogatory$ statements$towards$the$other$team.$ 2.$ “Booing”$or$other$unsportsmanlike$acts$are$not$allowed.$ 3.$ Derogatory,$profane,$obscene,$or$negative$cheers$are$not$allowed.$ 4.$ Noisemakers$are$not$permitted$and$may$be$confiscated.$ 5.$ Passing$of$people$over$heads$of$crowd$or$other$rowdy$behavior$is$not$permitted.$ 6.$ All$signs$must$be$approved$by$an$administrator.$$Negative$or$derogatory$signs$will$not$be$permitted.$ 7.$ Oak$Park$Administration$reserves$the$right$to$eject$any$spectator$for$unsportsmanlike$behavior$without$refund$of$ admission.$$$ 8.$ MSHSAA$guidelines$will$supersede$NKCSD$and$OPHS$guidelines$at$any$statealevel$competition.$ ' ' ' ' ' 9 Clubs'and'Other'Activities' Oak$Park$High$School$offers$a$wide$variety$of$schoolasponsored$and$student$initiated$clubs$and$activities.$$Many$of$ these$organizations$are$student$interest$driven,$and$we$encourage$students$to$get$involved$in$clubs$and$school$ activities.$$Please$refer$to$the$following$list$of$clubs,$activities$and$organizations.$ ' ' ' ' ' ' 10 ATTENDANCE' The$attendance$office$is$now$located$by$the$south$entrance$of$the$building$(by$the$tennis$courts).$$This$will$now$ become$the$new$student$entrance.$$From$7:23$–$2:30,$all$students$should$enter$and$exit$through$the$south$entrance.$$ Students$will$check$in$and$out$through$the$new$attendance$office.$$Parents$are$encouraged$to$call$ahead$if$they$need$ to$check$their$student$out$early$and$may$pick$them$up$at$the$new$student$entrance.$$$ ' Absence'Notification'Procedure' When$a$student$will$be$absent,$please$follow$these$procedures:$ •$ The$parent$or$guardian$listed$on$the$enrollment$form$is$responsible$for$calling$the$school$to$report$a$student’s$ absence$or$tardiness.$$The$call$should$be$made$between$6:45$a.m.$and$8:00$a.m.$$The$attendance$office$may$ be$reached$at$321a5320$or$321a5311.$ •$ For$any$student$to$be$permitted$to$leave$campus$during$the$school$day,$a$parent/guardian$listed$on$the$ enrollment$form$must$call$the$Attendance$office.$$$A$student$must$have$a$permit$slip$to$leave$and$sign$out$ through$the$Attendance$office.$$Failure$to$comply$results$in$disciplinary$action$and$parent/guardian$will$be$ notified.$ •$ All$absences,$excused$or$unexcused,$will$be$counted$against$students’$attendance$for$purposes$of$the$A+$ program.$ •$ If$a$student$is$leaving$school$for$an$appointment,$they$must$pick$up$a$pass$from$the$Attendance$office$before$ school$or$during$passing$time.$ •$ Students$who$are$absent$due$to$illness$or$unexcused$from$school$may$not$participate$in$activities$that$afternoon$ or$evening$or$on$the$following$Saturday$for$a$Friday$absence$unless$approved$by$the$Principal$or$designee$(see$ Student$Activities$Handbook).$ •$ We$do$not$accept$notes$from$parents.$$To$report$an$absence,$parents$must$call$one$of$the$numbers$listed$ above.$ •$ Continued$chronic$truancy$and$absences$may$be$referred$to$the$Clay$County$Juvenile$Court.$ Please!refer!to!NKC!Board!Policy!JEDAAP2!in!section!B!of!this!handbook!for!more!detail!regarding!North!Kansas!City!Schools!Attendance!Procedures.! With proper documentation, the following absences will NOT count toward the attendance consequences as defined below: 1.$ Hospitalization 2.$ Mandatory court date 3.$ Religious observance 4.$ Medically documented illness 5.$ Documented Dental/Orthodontist appointment or doctor’s appointment 6.$ Verified school counseling/office appointment 7.$ A school-based medical professional excuses the absence 8.$ School-related activities in which the student is a participant 9.$ History of chronic health problems, provided that proper documentation is filed with the Attendance office or in Health Room 10.$ Death in the family 11.$ 2 College visits (to be taken as a junior/senior) $ A verified absence is defined as an absence from class resulting from illness or unforeseen circumstances which is verified by a parent. Communication'to'Parents'and'Students' Parent/guardian$will$receive$a$notice$of$attendance$at$the$6,2,15,$and$18aweek$mark$in$the$semester.$$The$purpose$of$ the$notice$is$to$inform$the$parent$about$their$student’s$status$as$it$relates$to$the$expectation$of$90%$attendance.$$In$ addition,$the$notice$will$address$the$possibility$of$percentage$deductions$per$course$if$the$90%$threshold$is$not$ achieved.$$The$notice$will$also$include$a$detailed$schedule$of$opportunities$for$students$to$makeaup$time$through$ study$sessions$outside$of$the$regular$school$day.$$The$student$or$parent$may$request$of$a$copy$of$the$student’s$ attendance$report$by$contacting$the$school’s$Attendance$office.$$$ ' Consequences'for'Violations' A$high$school$student$whose$attendance$falls$below$90%$in$one$semester$will$receive$a$percentage$deduction$by$ Leaving$school$without$signing$out$through$the$Attendance$office.$ 2.$ Absence$from$school$without$prior$permission$from$your$parent/guardian.$ 3.$ Absence$from$class$without$permission$(skipping).$ 4.$ Obtaining$a$pass$to$go$to$a$certain$place$and$do$not$report$there.$ 5.$ Becoming$ill$and$going$home$or$staying$somewhere$in$the$school$building$instead$of$reporting$to$the$nurse’s$ office.$ 6.$ Having$permission$to$go$home$and$return,$become$ill$and$remain$there$without$a$parent/guardian$call.$ 7.$ Coming$to$school$but$not$attending$classes.$ 8.$ Witnessed$at$school$during$the$time$the$parent/guardian$reports$you$as$absent.$ ' THE'LUMBERJACK'CAFÉ' The$Lumberjack$Café$is$open$for$breakfast$from$6:50$–$7:20$a.m.$$Lunch$times$vary$depending$on$the$student’s$class$ schedule.$$All$students$should$enter$the$Café$through$the$southwest$entrance,$not$through$the$cash$register$payment$ area.$$Promptly$select$your$food,$exit$through$the$cashiers$and$proceed$into$the$dining$area.$$All$students$should$ know$their$sixadigit$ID$numbers$and$have$cash$or$check$ready$for$the$cashier.$$The$Café$should$not$be$abused.$$ Students$who$fail$to$deposit$their$trash$in$a$proper$place,$do$not$clean$their$own$mess,$or$destroy$or$deface$property$ will$be$punished$and$will$lose$privileges.$$Theft$will$result$in$disciplinary$consequences$up$to$and$including$ suspension.$$OPHS$has$a$closed$campus.$No$one$is$allowed$to$leave$campus$for$lunch.$$$ ' ' 12 DRIVING'&'PARKING'PRIVILEGES' Student$parking$permits$are$$35.00$for$the$year$or$$20.00$for$each$semester.$ $ Driving$to$school$is$a$privilege.$$Students$who$request$to$park$on$school$property$during$school$hours$must$purchase$ a$parking$permit.!Prior$to$receiving$a$permit,$the$following$are$required:$ $ 1.$ Completed$Parking$Form$(see$the$main$office$for$the$form)$ 2.$ Proof$of$Insurance$ 3.$ Valid$Driver’s$License$ Students$are$expected$to$drive$responsibly$and$follow$parking$rules$stated$on$the$parking$form.$$The$assigned$parking$ permit$should$be$displayed$at$all$times$and$students$should$only$park$in$designated$student$lots.$Failure$to$display$an$ assigned$parking$permit$or$follow$parking$permit$guidelines$are$subject$to$a$fine$that$will$be$added$as$an$obligation$to$ the$student’s$account.$$ $ All$students$should$be$aware$that$vehicles$parked$on$school$property$are$subject$to$search$when$officials$have$ reasonable$suspicion$that$weapons,$drugs$or$objects$prohibited$by$school$policy$or$the$law$are$contained$therein.$$ Oak$Park$High$School$and$the$North$Kansas$City$School$District$assume$no$liability$for$theft,$accidental,$or$intentional$ damage$to$any$vehicle$or$its$contents$while$on$NKCSD$property.$$Persons$parking$their$vehicles$on$North$Kansas$ City$School$District$premises$do$so$at$their$own$risk.$ $ Safety'Belt'Policy$ All$operators$and$passengers$of$motor$vehicles$are$required$to$properly$fasten$safety$belts$when$driving$on$school$ property.$$Any$operator$of$a$vehicle$in$which$the$driver$or$any$passenger$is$not$wearing$a$safety$belt$or$is$not$ otherwise$properly$restrained$in$an$infant$or$child$seat$will$receive$the$following$penalties:$ •$ Firstatime$student$offender$will$receive$a$written$warning,$and$parent/guardian$will$be$notified.$ •$ Secondatime$offender$will$lose$parking$privileges$at$the$high$school$for$two$weeks,$and$parent/$guardian$will$ be$notified.$ •$ Thirdatime$student$offender$will$then$have$his/her$parking$privileges$at$the$high$school$revoked$for$the$ remainder$of$the$school$year,$and$parent/$guardian$will$be$notified.$ •$ Any$other$operator$who$is$not$a$student$will$receive$a$warning$and$safety$education$material.$Any$school$ administrator,$staff$member,$or$police$officer$may$report$a$violation$of$this$policy$to$the$appropriate$school$ authority.$ ' GRADUATION' $ Graduation'Requirements' Graduation$requirements$can$be$found$in$the$Program$of$Studies$Guide$at$www.ophscounseling.weebly.com$or$by$ talking$to$your$counselor.$$Without$exception,$students$must$have$met$all$graduation$requirements$in$order$to$ participate$in$the$Commencement$Ceremony$(see$Board'Policy'IKFB).$$Students$must$earn$all$required$credits$and$ complete$all$subject$area$requirements$in$order$to$receive$a$diploma$and$to$be$allowed$to$“walk”$at$commencement.$ $ Early'Graduation' School$board$policy$requires$that$students$attend$high$school$for$four$years$as$fullatime$students$in$order$to$qualify$for$ graduation.$Students$who$feel$they$have$extenuating$circumstances$justifying$or$requiring$early$graduation$should$ see$their$counselors$to$discuss$the$process$of$requesting$a$waiver.$ $ GUIDANCE'AND'COUNSELING' Counselors$are$prepared$to$help$students$in$many$ways.$$They$can$provide$counseling$for$personal$problems,$ academic$problems,$or$planning$for$the$future.$$They$can$also$help$students$find$information$on$educational$or$ vocational$opportunities.$$A$wide$selection$of$related$materials$is$available$in$the$Counseling$Center$or$on$their$ are$available$from$the$counseling$office.$$Emergencies$will$be$handled$immediately$without$prior$appointment.$ $ $ $ $ 13 Transcripts' Students$may$request$copies$of$their$transcript$either$as$unofficial$personal$copies$or$official$copies$mailed$by$the$ registrar.$$$ $ Schedule$Adjustment$Practices:$ Schedule$changes$will$be$made$for$the$following$reasons:$ •$ A$student$was$placed$in$a$class$they$did$not$request$due$to$an$administrative$error.$ •$ The$student$does$not$meet$the$prearequisites.$ •$ In$order$to$complete$a$graduation$requirement$(seniors$only).$ Grade'Replacements' Students$who$are$repeating$a$class$in$order$to$replace$a$failing$grade$or$to$raise$their$G.P.A.$must$fill$out$a$Grade$ Replacement$Form$and$turn$it$in$to$the$Counseling$Office$by$the$end$of$the$eighth$week$of$the$semester.$ ' HEALTH'SERVICES'%'SCHOOL'NURSE' The$school$nurse’s$office$is$located$adjacent$to$the$main$office$area.$$A$registered$nurse$is$on$duty$during$school$ hours.$$The$nurse$is$a$good$source$of$information$regarding$healtharelated$questions$and$health$opportunities.$ $ Go$to$the$school$nurse’s$office$with$a$pass$if:$ •$ You$become$ill$or$are$injured$at$school.$ •$ You$need$an$elevator$pass$or$special$consideration.$ •$ You$want$your$vision$or$hearing$tested.$ •$ You$need$to$take$medication.$ $ Entrance$for$students$to$the$Nurse’s$Office$is$available$through$the$hallway$on$the$west$side$of$the$main$officee$we$ ask$that$students$do$not$go$through$the$main$office$to$reach$the$nurse.$$Students$leaving$school$early$due$to$illness$ should$be$checked$out$through$the$nurse’s$office.$ $ ITEMS'&'MESSAGES'DELIVERED'TO'STUDENTS' Students$are$responsible$for$checking$with$the$office$for$items$they$have$asked$their$parents$to$bring$to$school.$$Fast$ food$lunches$will$not$be$delivered$to$classrooms.$Parents$visiting$during$lunchtime$must$remain$in$the$office.$Visitors$ will$not$be$permitted$in$the$school$cafeteria.$$ $ Students$will$be$notified$at$the$end$of$the$school$day$to$come$to$the$office$to$receive$gifts$such$as$flowers$or$balloons.$$ The$office$will$deliver$urgent$messages$to$students$only$from$parents$or$guardians$listed$on$the$enrollment$form.$Oak$ Park$High$School$would$appreciate$your$cooperation$in$protecting$class$time$by$limiting$such$messages$to$ emergencies$only.$ ' LIBRARY'MEDIA'CENTER'(LMC)' The$Library$Media$Center$is$open$at$7:00$a.m.$before$school,$during$lunchtime$(for$quiet$study$only$with$an$Oak$Park$ ID$card),$and$after$school$until$2:45$p.m.$to$all$students.$$During$the$school$day,$students$may$come$with$study$hall$or$ classroom$passes.$$The$library$will$charge$the$replacement$cost$for$any$lost$or$damaged$materials.$Daily$fines$are$ charged$for$overdue$materials.$Fines$continue$even$if$students$are$absent.$ ' LOCKERS' Each$student$is$assigned$a$locker.$$All$seniors$and$juniors$will$be$assigned$an$individual$locker,$and$students$in$other$ grades$will$be$assigned$a$locker$partner.$$All$lockers,$including,$but$not$limited$to,$hallway,$PE,$and$athletic$lockers,$ are$the$property$of$the$school$district$and$are$subject$to$periodic$inspection$without$notice$(see$Board$Policy$JFG).$$ Please$report$locker$problems$to$administrative$assistants$in$the$Counseling$Office.$$Students$may$only$be$at$their$ lockers$before$and$after$school$and$during$passing$time$for$class$changes.$$Students$may$not$change$lockers$unless$ permission$is$received$from$an$administrator.$$$ SCHOOL'SAFETY'&'SECURITY:''VISITORS'&'ENTRANCE'TO'THE'BUILDING$ In$order$to$provide$a$safe$and$secure$environment$for$students$and$staff,$all$entrances$and$the$interior$of$the$building$$ are$monitored$by$security$cameras.$$Exterior$doors$are$locked$from$7:23$a.m.$to$2:45$p.m.$$Visitors$are$required$to$$ enter$through$the$main$entrance$on$the$north$side$of$the$building$and$must$check$in$through$the$main$office.$$Visitors$ must$present$a$driver’s$license$and/or$state$ID$which$will$be$scanned$into$our$Raptor$visitor$management$system.$$ Upon$approval$a$visitor$sticker$will$be$printed$allowing$them$entrance$to$the$building.$$All$visitors$must$check$out$in$the$ main$office$and$return$their$ID$sticker.$Parents/guardians$may$be$asked$to$display$their$driver’s$license$or$ID$when$$ checking$out$a$student.$$Between$7:23$a.m.$and$2:45$p.m.$all$students$should$enter$and$exit$through$the$New' Student'Entrance$on$the$south$side$of$the$building$(by$the$tennis$courts).$ $ During$crisis$events$students$will$NOT$be$released$from$the$building.$$All$exterior$doors$will$be$locked$and$individuals$ will$not$be$allowed$to$enter$the$building.$$ $ School$lockers,$desks$and$other$school$property$are$provided$for$the$convenience$of$the$students$and,$as$such,$are$ subject$to$periodic$inspection$without$notice.$$Student$property$may$be$searched$based$on$reasonable$suspicion$of$a$ violation$of$district$rules,$policy$or$law.$$The$school$reserves$the$right$to$conduct$searches$with$the$assistance$of$a$ drug$dog$at$any$time$(see$Board$Policy$JFG).$ $ At$least$one$fullatime$School$Resource$Deputy$(Clay$County$Deputy$Sheriff)$is$on$campus$at$all$times$in$order$to$ serve$students$and$to$assist$school$officials$in$ensuring$safety$and$security$at$Oak$Park.$$In$addition,$two$Campus$ Supervisors$are$staffed$to$assist$with$building$and$campus$supervision.$$ ' STUDENT'ACADEMIC'SUPPORT' $ Grading'System' The$letter$grades$of$A,$B,$C,$D$and$P$all$carry$a$half$(.5)$unit$of$credit$per$semester.$$If$you$are$carrying$a$full$ semester$load$of$seven$(7)$classes$and$pass$all$classes$with$one$of$the$above$passing$grades,$then$you$will$have$ accumulated$a$total$of$three$and$oneahalf$(3.5)$credits$for$the$semester.$$A$grade$of$“F”$or$“I”$receives$no$credit.$$ (Exception:$an$incomplete$grade$may$become$a$credit$grade).$ $ A$$ =$Excellent$ Oak$Park$is$proud$to$host$allaschool$assemblies.$$All$assemblies$begin$with$the$Pledge$of$Allegiance$and/or$the$ National$Anthem,$during$which$students$are$expected$to$participate$or$remain$quiet.$$Conduct$at$assemblies$is$ expected$to$be$respectful$and$appropriate.$$For$some$assemblies,$a$supervised$quiet$conversation$area$is$provided$ for$students$who$do$not$wish$to$attend$the$assembly.$$In$other$cases,$all$students$are$required$to$attend.$$Teachers$ will$sit$in$designated$areas$according$to$the$grade$level$they$are$assigned$to$supervise.$$$$ $ Cafeteria' The$cafeteria$should$not$be$abused.$$Students$who$fail$to$deposit$their$trash$in$a$proper$place,$do$not$clean$their$own$ mess,$or$destroy$or$deface$property$will$be$punished$and$will$lose$privileges.$$Theft$will$result$in$disciplinary$ consequences$up$to$and$including$suspension.$ $ Dress'Code' Cell'Phones,'Electronics'and'MacBook'Air'Procedures$ Cell$phones$and$other$electronic$devices$are$a$pervasive$and$prevalent$part$of$today’s$culture$in$a$rapidly$changing$ world.$$Technological$advances$have$made$communication$and$entertainment$options$more$efficient,$compact,$and$ faster$than$ever$before.$$By$definition,$technology$is$supposed$to$enhance$our$quality$of$life.$$In$fact,$at$Oak$Park$High$ School$students$are$issued$a$MacBook$Air$computer$along$with$textbooks.$$The$most$current$procedures$for$ MacBook$Air$are$available$on$the$district$webpage$at$www.nkcschools.org.$$ $ Our$responsibility$as$a$school$is$to$help$students$learn$proper,$responsible$use$and$appropriate$etiquette$for$cell$ 18 $ Hall'Passes' Students$are$to$be$in$supervised$areas$when$the$lights$signal$the$start$of$classroom$instructional$time.$$In$order$for$the$ school$to$account$for$all$students$and$to$reduce$disturbances$in$the$hall,$the$rule$is$simple:$$You$must$always$carry$ your$student$planner$(hall$pass)$and$school$ID$at$OPHS.$$Hall$passes$can$also$be$received$from$the$main$office$if$the$ student$does$not$have$a$planner.$ ' Leaving'Building/Campus' The$State$of$Missouri$is$committed$to$addressing$any$student$action$or$behavior$that$disrupts$the$teaching/learning$ process$in$schools.$$In$May$of$1996,$the$Missouri$General$Assembly$passed$House$Bills$1301$and$1298,$collectively$ known$as$the$"Safe$Schools$Act."$$This$law$became$effective$August$28,$1996.$$The$Safe$Schools$Act$is$a$major$ effort$to$improve$safety,$security$and$student$discipline$in$Missouri$schools.$$NOTE:$$In$most$situations$involving$ ' Hazing'Complaint'Procedure' When'a'student'has'been'or'believes'that'he/she'has'been'subjected'to'a'hazing'incident,'the'student' shall'promptly'report'the'incident,'orally'or'in'writing,'to'the'building'principal'or'his/her'designee.' ' The'principal'or'his/her'designee'shall'conduct'a'timely'and'thorough'investigation'of'the'alleged'hazing' incident.''The'principal'or'his/her'designee'shall'prepare'a'written'report'summarizing'the'investigation' and'recommending'disposition'of'the'complaint.' ' Recklessly'Endangering'Mental'Health' Recklessly'endangering'the'mental'health'of'a'student'includes'those'actions'that'subject'a'student'to' extreme'mental'stress,'including,'but'not'limited'to,'sleep'deprivation,'physical'confinement,'forced' conduct'which'could'result'in'extreme'embarrassment,'or'any'other'extreme'stress3inducing'activity.' ( Recklessly'Endangering'Physical'Health'or'Safety' Recklessly'endangering'the'physical'health'or'safety'of'a'student'includes,'but'is'not'limited'to,'acts'of' physical'brutality,'whipping,'beating,'branding,'exposing'to'the'elements,'forced'consumption'of'any'food,' liquor,'drug,'or'other'substance;'forced'smoking'or'chewing'of'tobacco'products;'or'any'other'forced' physical'activity'that'could'adversely'affect'the'physical'health'or'safety'of'an'individual.' ' Administrators'of'computer'resources'may'suspend'access'to'and/or'availability'of'the'district’s' technology'resources'to'diagnose'and'investigate'network'problems'or'potential'violations'of'the' B43 law'or'district'policies'and'procedures.'All'district'technology'resources'are'considered'district' property.''The'district'may'maintain'or'improve'technology'resources'at'any'time.'The'district'may' remove,'change'or'exchange'hardware'or'other'technology'between'buildings,'classrooms'or'users' at'any'time'without'prior'notice.'Authorized'district'personnel'may'install'or'remove'new'programs' or'information,'install'new'equipment,'upgrade'any'system'or'enter'any'system'to'correct'problems' at'any'time.' ( Content'Filtering'and'Monitoring' The'district'will'monitor'the'online'activities'of'minors'and'operate'a'technology'protection'measure' (“filtering/blocking'device”)'on'the'network'and/or'all'computers'with'Internet'access,'as'required' by'law.'The'filtering/blocking'device'will'be'used'to'protect'against'access'to'visual'depictions'that' are'obscene'or'harmful'to'minors'or'are'child'pornography,'as'required'by'law.'Filtering/Blocking' devices'are'not'foolproof,'and'the'district'cannot'guarantee'that'users'will'never'be'able'to'access' offensive'materials'using'district'equipment.'Evasion'or'disabling,'or'attempting'to'evade'or'disable,' a'filtering/blocking'device'installed'by'the'district'is'prohibited.' ' The'superintendent,'designee'or'the'district's'technology'administrator'may'disable'the'district's' filtering/blocking'device'to'enable'a'non3student'user'access'for'bona'fide'research'or'for'other' lawful'purposes.'In'making'decisions'to'disable'the'district's'filtering/blocking'device,'the' administrator'shall'consider'whether'the'use'will'serve'a'legitimate'educational'purpose'or' otherwise'benefit'the'district.' ' ' Closed'Forum'' The'district’s'technology'resources'are'not'a'public'forum'for'expression'of'any'kind'and'are'to'be' considered'a'closed'forum'to'the'extent'allowed'by'law.'The'district’s'web'page'will'provide' information'about'the'school'district,'but'will'not'be'used'as'an'open'forum.' ' All'expressive'activities'involving'district'technology'resources'that'students,'parents/guardians'and' members'of'the'public'might'reasonably'perceive'to'bear'the'imprimatur'of'the'district'and'that'are' designed'to'impart'particular'knowledge'or'skills'to'student'participants'and'audiences'are' considered'curricular'publications.'All'curricular'publications'are'subject'to'reasonable'prior' restraint,'editing'and'deletion'on'behalf'of'the'school'district'for'legitimate'pedagogical'reasons.'All' other'expressive'activities'involving'the'district’s'technology'are'subject'to'reasonable'prior'restraint' and'subject'matter'restrictions'as'allowed'by'law'and'Board'policies.' B45 6.'' Accessing'fee'services'without'permission'from'an'administrator'is'prohibited.'A'user'who' accesses'such'services'without'permission'is'solely'responsible'for'all'charges'incurred.' 7.'' Users'are'required'to'obey'all'laws,'including'criminal,'copyright,'privacy,'defamation'and' obscenity'laws.'The'school'district'will'render'all'reasonable'assistance'to'local,'state'or' federal'officials'for'the'investigation'and'prosecution'of'persons'using'district'technology'in' violation'of'any'law.' 8.'' The'district'prohibits'the'use'of'district'technology'resources'to'access,'view'or'disseminate' information'that'is'pornographic,'obscene,'child'pornography,'harmful'to'minors,'obscene' to'minors,'libelous,'pervasively'indecent'or'vulgar,'or'advertising'any'product'or'service'not' permitted'to'minors.' 9.'' Accessing,'viewing'or'disseminating'information'on'any'product'or'service'not'permitted'to' minors'is'prohibited'unless'under'the'direction'and'supervision'of'district'staff'for' curriculum3related'purposes.' 10.'The'district'prohibits'the'use'of'district'technology'resources'to'access,'view'or'disseminate' information'that'constitutes'insulting'or'fighting'words,'the'very'expression'of'which'injures' or'harasses'other'people'(e.g.,'threats'of'violence,'defamation'of'character'or'of'a'person’s' race,'religion'or'ethnic'origin);'presents'a'clear'and'present'likelihood'that,'because'of'their' content'or'their'manner'of'distribution,'they'will'cause'a'material'and'substantial'disruption' of'the'proper'and'orderly'operation'and'discipline'of'the'school'or'school'activities;'or'will' cause'the'commission'of'unlawful'acts'or'the'violation'of'lawful'district'policies'and' procedures.' 11.'The'district'prohibits'any'use'that'violates'any'person's'rights'under'applicable'laws,'and' specifically'prohibits'any'use'that'has'the'purpose'or'effect'of'discriminating'or'harassing' any'person'on'the'basis'of'race,'color,'religion,'sex,'national'origin,'ancestry,'disability,'age,' pregnancy'or'use'of'leave'protected'by'the'Family'and'Medical'Leave'Act.' 12.'The'district'prohibits'any'unauthorized'intentional'or'negligent'action'that'damages'or' disrupts'technology,'alters'its'normal'performance'or'causes'it'to'malfunction.'The'district' will'hold'users'responsible'for'such'damage'and'will'seek'both'criminal'and'civil'remedies,' as'necessary.' 13.'Users'may'only'install'and'use'properly'licensed'software,'audio'or'video'media'purchased' by'the'district'or'approved'for'use'by'the'district.'All'users'will'adhere'to'the'limitations'of' the'district’s'technology'licenses.'Copying'for'home'use'is'prohibited'unless'permitted'by' the'district’s'license'and'approved'by'the'district.' 14.'At'no'time'will'district'technology'or'software'be'removed'from'the'district'premises,'unless' authorized'by'the'district.' 15.'All'users'will'use'the'district’s'property'as'it'was'intended.'Technology'resources'will'not'be' moved'or'relocated'without'permission'from'an'administrator.'All'users'will'be'held' accountable'for'any'damage'they'cause'to'district'technology'resources.' ' ' B46 Electronic'Devices' Possession'of'beepers,'pagers,'radios,'MP3,''IPod,'CD'players,'laser'pointers,'portable'game'players,' etc.,'are'not'appropriate'in'a'school'setting.''The'school'is'not'responsible'for'damaged,'lost'or' stolen'items.' ' Cell'Phones' We'recognize'that'parents'may'want'their'student'to'have'a'mobile'phone'for'safety'reasons.'' However,'mobile'phones'do'present'possible'disruptions'to'the'educational'process.''Therefore,' appropriate'steps'must'be'taken'to'prevent'disruptions.' All'students'will'be'instructed'on'the'dangers'of'sharing'personal'information'about' themselves'or'others'over'the'Internet.' 2.''
