Our mission is to create
and promote Japanese and
American friendships.
We do this through business,
social, educational and
cultural activities. We are
the only organization in
Chicago that touches all of
these areas in American and
Japanese relationships.
The Japan America Society of Chicago is a nonprofit association made up of individuals and corporations interested in United States-Japan
business, cultural, political and social relations. Founded in 1930 to foster mutual goodwill and friendship between the people of Japan
and the United States, the Society enjoys a total membership of over 150 American and Japanese corporations and over 600 individuals
throughout Chicagoland and the Midwest. The Society sponsors over 50 public affairs and cultural programs annually, including business
luncheons, evening lectures, cultural events and social/networking opportunities. All members receive discounts on program registration and
invitations to special member-only events. The Society also has a Young Professionals Committee that organizes various evening lectures and
social outings throughout the year for members in their twenties and thirties. In addition, the Society offers more than six levels of Japanese
and English language courses. For membership information and other inquiries, visit www.jaschicago.org or contact the Society office.

Dear Friends:
Dear Society Members,
With great sadness, I send this farewell message to all of you. During the last three years, my wife Midori and I have truly enjoyed our very close
relationship with the Japan America Society of Chicago. We have worked together, laughed together and achieved much together. By bringing
many special Japanese cultural and business events here, our Japan-Chicago partnership has reached new heights.
I would like to begin this year’s letter to our members by first expressing, on behalf of our Society, our deep sorrow and condolences for those
lost to the Great East Japan Earthquake. Our thoughts and prayers remain with all those affected by the tragic events of this past March.
One of my greatest joys was to join you in celebrating the 80th anniversary of the JASC. As the Society now embarks upon its ninth decade, I’m
most optimistic because our Japan-Chicago friendship is in the best of hands — your hands.
During my stay here, the most unforgettable event was the Great East Japan Earthquake. Since then, the United States has been at the forefront
in providing tremendous support and relief.
The Society stepped forward immediately. It has raised substantial funds for Japan, and it has held two key events: a seminar entitled “Japan:
Road to Recovery — Challenges and Opportunities” and a lecture on “The Japanese Economy after the Earthquake and Tsunami — Its Impact
and the Road to Recovery.” Japan will never forget your support and your friendship.
I am most pleased that Japan is now recovering. It is functioning almost normally except in a very limited area. Many Japanese companies and
factories are coming back faster than expected. Japan is open for business, open for tourism and is safe.
It has been a wonderful three years in Chicago because of this Society. My sincerest appreciation goes to The Honorable Michael H. Moskow,
Chairman of the JASC, President Edward A. Grant, Executive Vice Presidents Tetsu Hayashi and Robert W. Karr Jr., Executive Director Mitsukuni
Baba, the Board of Directors, officers, and members for their hard work and dedication. Thanks to all of you, Japan and Chicago are now closer
than ever.
From the bottom of our hearts, Midori and I thank you deeply for your warm friendship. We will always treasure Chicago and all of you.
With best wishes,
George Hisaeda
Consul General of Japan at Chicago
This past year, our 80th anniversary year, was another year of progress for the Society. And while we recognize the many economic challenges
in our larger environment, we are guardedly optimistic for this coming year.
Our programs enjoyed another excellent year. With more than 40 programs and events covering business, public affairs, culture, education and
the social side, our members engaged us in a most robust fashion. From David Hale on the Global Economy, to Hideki Asari, Tatsuhiro Shindo
and Kathryn Ibata Arens presenting the Road to Recovery from the Great Earthquake, to our always popular Annual Sake Tasting, we strived to
further our mission of friendship and understanding between Japan and the United States.
I was also quite pleased by our continued growth of members, adding companies such as Takeda Pharmaceuticals, United Airlines and Marubeni
America, among many other wonderful companies and individuals. We are here to serve our members and the public, and our members are our
lifeblood. I thank all our members, new and continuing, corporate and individual, for your support.
I continue to be quite pleased by the development of our board. While I am reluctant in general to single out individual board members, I do
wish to cite and specially thank one new board member, Hironori Sawada, Deputy Consul General of the Consulate General of Japan at Chicago.
We continue to enjoy excellent classes of incoming board members; terrific individuals, great talents and highly engaged with Japan and the
Society. I thank all of our directors and governors for their service.
Two final points; a thank you to Consul General George Hisaeda and a closing comment on the Great Earthquake. Consul General Hisaeda, in
addition to exceptional service to his 10-state region these past three years, served with distinction as our Honorary Chairman for the same
period. George is a great friend of America and of the Society. We thank him deeply for his service and wish him the very best in his new duties
as Ambassador to the Sultanate of Oman. And we very much look forward to the arrival of his successor, the Honorable Yoshifumi Okamura.
On a more somber note, when the Great East Japan Earthquake struck, the Society expressed its deep sympathy and support for all those
affected. In addition, the Society immediately began fundraising for those affected, with 100 cents on the dollar contributed to be conveyed
to the Japan Red Cross for Earthquake relief. We have been touched and heartened by the response. We made a contribution of more than
$140,000 to the Japan Red Cross at our Annual Meeting and will make another contribution before the end of the calendar year. Thank you all
for your response to this great human tragedy.
We remain committed to providing both our membership and the public at large with a wide variety of quality programs and events. Our
financial affairs are in order. With a dedicated and energized board, loyal members and the continuing key support of the Consulate General of
Japan at Chicago and others, we are pleased to embark on the Society’s new year.
Thank you all for your support of the Society. The Society’s future is bright, and I look forward to working with you.
Sincerely,
Michael H. Moskow
Chairman

September 30, 2011
Dear Society Members,
I am pleased to once again report to you on the progress of your Society as we complete our 80th anniversary celebration year. I thank you
and others for the great support of the Society this past year. The purpose of the Japan America Society of Chicago is to create and promote
friendship and understanding between Japan and the United States. We do this through business, public affairs, social, educational and cultural
programming. All of your support of the Society furthers this high and important purpose.
We were all greatly saddened by the incredible devastation and tragedy brought by the Great East Japan Earthquake. But I have been
heartened by the courage of the people of Japan, and by the response of our Society here and of the United States as a whole. With much work
still to be done, we extend our strongest support, in thought, prayer and deed, to all those affected.
Membership and development are essential to our success. Numerous member companies and individual members have provided direct
financial support to our Society this past year, including many as event or program sponsors or contributors. We thank each of you. We depend
upon our individual and corporate members in every way. New corporate members such as Takeda Pharmaceuticals and United Airlines, among
other fine companies, were most important to our membership success this year. And our annual program sponsors and underwriters include
Astellas, Masuda Funai, Molex, Takeda, Underwriters Laboratories, Citibank and Mizuho Bank. Thank you all so much. In the back of this annual
report, you will find a listing of annual program underwriters, sponsors of individual programs, corporate members, and donors. I invite you to
please look at these organizations and individuals that have supported our Society. Their support, along with others, is so vital to our Society
and we thank them deeply.
Along this same vein though, I wish to mention one couple who has been particularly special supporters of the Society for many years, and
again this year. Joyce and Bruce Chelberg participate in our events, work very hard behind the scenes, fund programs, arrange events with the
Art Institute and this year hosted our first ever legacy giving reception, among many other efforts and contributions. We thank Joyce and Bruce
for all their participation generosity and goodwill. It would be difficult to thank them enough.
Our staff, Mitsukuni Baba, Executive Director, Erika Kono and Satoko Ogi, quietly go about their work, producing great programs and services
for our members — day in and day out. At this past annual meeting, the board of directors honored the staff for their excellence and dedicated
service to the Society. They richly deserved this recognition, and I personally thank them for their devotion and skill.
Your Society continues to make important progress. We still face many challenges. To maintain our steady financial footing and continue
our robust programming, we have much hard work ahead of us. Economies here and abroad struggle and are full of uncertainties. In order
to continue on the path that we are on at the Society, we will have to continue to deliver excellent programs and great member value in a
financially careful fashion. We intend to do that. At the same time, we ask for your continuing input, participation and support. With that, we
look forward to a highly productive year, providing great value to you, our members.
Thank you again to all that have supported us so well. I am very excited about our new year. We very much look forward to working with you
and serving you going forward.
Sincerely,
Edward A. Grant
President
We once again had a year of wonderful programs, events and classes. They are the primary vehicle by which we pursue our mission. I will briefly
mention some of the speakers and programs that are representative of the full year’s slate; Yasuchika Hasegawa, CEO of Takeda Pharmaceutical,
spoke about challenges and opportunities for Japan; Fuzjko Hemming, Concert Pianist, performed an 80th anniversary concert; David Hale,
Chairman of Hale Global Economics, spoke about the global economy; Ambassador Robert Orr, US Executive Director of the Asian Development
Bank, presented on the US-Japan relationship at the Bank; and Leo Melamed, CME Chairman Emeritus, spoke about derivitives markets in Japan.
These are just some examples of our many great programs from this past year. Please take a look at them all in the program listing in the back
of this annual report.
Programming, membership and development continue to be the cornerstones and the engines of our Society. These are our fundamentals —
the three legs of the stool. We congratulate and thank these three committees, and all that contributed to their successes, for their great efforts
and results on behalf of the Society.
I also wish to specially recognize and thank some of the organizations that we work with routinely in developing, publicizing and delivering
our programming and other services to our members. The Consulate General of Japan at Chicago, JETRO, the Japan Chamber of Commerce
and Industry in Chicago, and the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, among others, are organizations that are great partners to us in serving
our members and delivering our programming. We wish to be mutually supportive and cooperative with these key groups and assist them
wherever we can, as they assist and support us.
Finally, we have great directors, governors and an exceptional staff. I am particularly grateful to The Honorable Michael Moskow, our Chairman, to
The Honorable George Hisaeda, Consul General of Japan at Chicago, our Honorary Chairman and to Senator Adlai Stevenson, our Chairman Emeritus.
Their wisdom and counsel is invaluable. We will miss George Hisaeda, but thank him for his service to the Society and wish him well in his new
ambassadorial role. And we look forward to welcoming his successor, The Honorable Yoshifumi Okamura. Our outgoing Executive Vice President Bill
Florida, his successor Bob Karr and our continuing EVP, Tetsu Hayashi, have all provided distinguished and valued service to the Society. I thank them
and all of our directors, officers and governors for their great service, efforts and results in advancing our purpose.
