WHO IS EMMA ROCA
Born in Barcelona in 1973, married, mother of three children, graduated in
Biochemistry, professional fire fighter, specialized in search and rescue for the
Grup de Rescat de la Generalitat de Catalunya (GRAE). She has taken part in
Triathlons, Duathlons, Mountain Marathons, Ski mountaineering and, above all,
adventure raids, which are her great passion and of which she won the world
championship in 2010. Her last projects have been winning the american
ultramarathon Leadville (161km, Colorado) or GoreTex TransAlpine Run (293km
from Germany to Italy Alps).
She´s able to combine being a mother, a professional firefighter and an elite
athlete by balancing her schedule minute to minute. She has great brands that
sponsor her and thanks to them, she´s able to optimize here performance.
As a rescue firefighter, it’s crucial for her to be at a top physical condition every
day to be able to give 120% of herself in order to be able to help people that are
in trouble up in the mountain (be it in a canal with a broken ankle, or in a ravine
with a hypothermia, or on a cliff and in trouble or just simply lost).
As a biochemist she knows about all the little body reactions, and tries to live a
healthy and balanced life in compliance with her daily energetic needs. She has
finished her dissertation and is now working on her thesis on the physiological
and biochemical profile of an ultra-distance athlete (SUMMIT project).
As a mother, and David’s wife, she gives and receives love, and needs nothing
else in her life. Her three children are the main motor in her life, and make every
day of her life a great adventure raid.
As an athlete she has discovered her physical and mental boundaries, learning
where her reachable limits lie, and applies a daily discipline that helps her achieve
many personal and sporting goals.

PHILOSOPHY OF LIFE
Inside my life there are several pillars;
FAMILY: My family has grown continuously, and since I met David more than 15
years ago three little persons have come to fill every minute of our days with
happiness. We’ve also tightened our links with Tallo, Bellver and la Cerdanya to a
point in which they are much more than simply the place we live in. The school,
our children’s friends and there parents, our coworkers, the local PTA, the local
storekeepers and our neighbors all form part of a great family…and if we had to
move now it would not be easy for us. The life quality we’ve achieved here is pure
gold.
THE MOUNTAIN: The mountain is very useful to get to know yourself in the most
natural and organic way possible. Since I was a little girl, I’ve always felt the need
to walk alone in the mountains, to interact with nature and live it fully. Nature and
the mountains that contain it, are the best place to find time for yourself, to think,
even to isolate yourself….to discover new sensations and environments. On the
other hand I’ve also lived the mountain as a personal challenge. All the events I’ve
taken part in (mountain marathons, ski mountaineering, adventure raids, ski
touring, vertical kilometers…) have helped me overcome, find boundaries that
other surroundings won’t allow me to find, and as a result feel satisfied after a
great race, raid, climb or descent from a summit. I’ve felt proud of myself when
I’ve been able to overcome distances, inclines, technical difficulties, running,
cycling, rowing…or, for example, when I climbed and came down from el Aneto
from Benasque in 5 hours. But all these achievements weren’t to demonstrate
others my capabilities and abilities, but to realize what my full potential is; the
limitless spirit to overcome, and to feel the personal satisfaction of finishing a
tough event. The mountain tests you, finds you and you discover yourself.
WORK: Work has also been paramount in my life. Even though a have a degree in
biochemistry from the UAB, I’ve always felt the call to help people and loved the
wilderness. As a firefighter I’ve found a unique balance, and since I was a rookie
in 2000 I’ve been taking part in all sorts of services, most of them very gratifying.
In 2007 I was promoted to the search and rescue squad and since then I’ve been
much more connected to the mountain. Every day I go to work reminds me of how
lucky I am!

PROFESSIONAL CV
Born August the 12th of 1973 in Barcelona.
She has a degree in Biochemistry from the Universitat Autònoma of Barcelona
(1996).
She has a master in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology with the work: "Effect of
Mutations in Retinitis Pigmentosa parent transmembrane domain on the folding of
rhodopsin" (1998).
In the following years to finishing her degree, she worked as a lecturer at the
Faculty of Medicine at UAB in the laboratory of Biophysics (1996-1999) while she
worked to get her phD., and later as a professor at the Fundació Universitària del
Bages in Manresa giving classes of Biochemistry and Biophysics (1999-2006).
Now she is finishing her Biochemist phD in the UdG with the SUMMIT project
(Health in the ultra marathons and its limits).
She’s been a professional firefighter with the Generalitat de Catalunya since the
year 2000, and a member of the special task search and rescue group (GRAE) of
the Generalitat firefighters since the year 2007.
Mother of Irina born August the 22nd, 2006, and twins Martí and Mariona born
the December the 2nd, 2008.
She organized:
- 8 years the WIAR (Women International Adventure Race) since 2003, a
woman’s only adventure race: www.raidwiar.com
- 5 years the Triraids: a Sunday morning short raid for initiated athletes of all
sexes.
- Some woman’s only training camps.
- The logistics for the Master of Medicine Mountain Hospital Puigcerdà with
Dr. Enric Subirats for over 10 years.
She has published several scientific papers related to her master and thesis in
biochemistry, and dissertation works for the firefighters:
