If you answered yes to any of these questions,
you may be interested in joining us for two
upcoming courses: Mountain Travel and
Rescue 1 (MTR-1), and Level 1 Avalanche
(Avy-1). These courses are designed to give a
student some of the tools necessary to enjoy
the backcountry safely, participate in search
and rescue scenarios, stay comfortable in a
winter environment, and travel safely in
avalanche terrain.

If you’re interested, you have a few things to
do. First, contact Scott Hsu or Aaron
Anderson to express your interest and get the
pre-course homework. Second, obtain a copy
of Mountaineering: Freedom of the Hills and
Snow Sense. Third, start gathering your gear
and get ready to learn about winter travel,
camping, and safety.

$10 to cover incidental course materials
Required Texts:
Some of the Gear You’ll Need*:
Travel gear (skis w/skins, or snowshoes)
Compass (we’ll provide a map)
Sleeping bag (rated to ≤ 0°F), sleeping pad, tarp
Stove, fuel, pot, fire starter, water bottles
Food, water, extra clothing
Shovel, probe pole, beacon
A backpack to put it all in
*Don’t run out and buy a bunch of stuff just for
these classes. You can rent from REI or the Los
Alamos Mountaineers, or borrow from friends. If
you still come up short, contact us first.
