Dear Friends: Incorporated in 1973, the Fayette Humane Society is the oldest nonprofit humane organization in Fayette County, Georgia. We are staffed by volunteers and are supported entirely by individual and corporate donations. E We’re pleased to report that 2015 is a year of both steady progress and transformation for the Fayette Humane Society. Our results speak to the right strategy, the passion of talented volunteers, and the discipline and focus to do what it takes to give many more animals the second chances they deserve. Here’s a financial summary of the first six months: • Because we do not have a shelter, • most animals we rescue live in • temporary foster homes until they • are adopted. Contributions from grants, donations and fundraisers totaled $30,216, and the income from our adoptions netted $38,291. Expansion of our TNR program incurred $7,293 in expenses and enabled us to reduce pet overpopulation at its source. We invested $26,913 in spay and neuter surgeries, which includes public assistance as well as the rescued cats and dogs we have placed for adoption. We also delivered the highest quality of care and medical treatment for cats and dogs that needed a little extra time in finding a home, which accounted for another $36,271 in expenses. We believe all companion pets have intrinsic value and deserve to be treated with love and respect. These are the basic numbers, but they don’t begin to tell the whole story. While FHS Board Members: President: Stephanie Cohran Secretary: Sharon Marchisello Treasurer: Sabrina Brown Members At Large: Karin Keller Rani Rathburn Leah Thomson Molly Young our programs and services continue to play an important role in the lives of needy animals throughout the area, we’re finding it difficult to keep up with the ever-increasing demand. This is our real challenge, and we need your support. Thanks to the ongoing generosity of patrons and donors like you, we strive to give every pet in our community a chance to live out its life as part of a loving and affectionate family. Together, we can make it happen. Until they all have homes, Stephanie Cohran President of the FHS FALL 2015 2 F A Y E T T E H U M A N E S O C I E T Y FHS Volunteer In Profile (VIP): Leah Thomson Service is very important to Leah Lindsey Thomson. As the Fundraising and Event Chairperson for the Fayette Humane Society and newest Board member, she plans and implements activities throughout the year that benefit this organization. She is also involved in public relations and marketing for the FHS. Leah's love of animals is the impetus for the work she does, and she enjoys every minute of it. This is evidenced by her positive and spirited attitude that shows in everything she does. Leah and a friend are enjoying an afternoon out. When Leah and her family were living in Texas about 20 years ago, they rescued their first dog, Jake, and that sparked her interest in how the rescue process worked and how she could help. After moving to this area, she answered an ad on a local website for a fundraising chairperson for the Fayette Humane Society, and she has helped in that capacity for two years. Leah passed the importance of service on to her children. Her daughters have volunteered for the Peace Corps and mission work in Africa, and her son, with various youth organizations. All have at least one rescue dog. She has resided with her husband, Tobin, in Peachtree City for 15 years, and they enjoy being empty nesters with their three dogs, Bubbs, Fia and Jack. Interested in volunteering? Call 770-487-1073 or fill out a form online at www.fayettehumane.org. Thank you! How to Make a Recurring Donation Shop with us at Shakerag! Many donors like to set up recurring donations to their favorite charities, such as the FHS. Did you know you have the option of specifying through PayPal that a certain dollar amount be automatically charged to your credit card each month? To sign up, go to our website at www.fayettehumane.org/how-to-donate. Looking to get a head start on your holiday shopping, and help homeless animals at the same time? The FHS is once again participating in the 38th annual Shakerag Arts and Crafts Festival in Peachtree City on Saturday, September 19th from 10 – 6 p.m. and Sunday, September 20th from 12 – 5 p.m. We will have many fun and unique items for sale, all handmade by our kindhearted and talented volunteers. In Memoriam It is with sadness that we say good-bye to Lynne Muehl, an active FHS volunteer who passed away on May 23 after a brief illness. Lynne served as cat lead at adoptions and did a lot of our behind-the-scenes paperwork as cat foster coordinator. She also fostered cats and left behind seven cats of her own. FHS volunteers cared for the cats during Lynne’s illness and have placed them all in new loving homes. The FHS is one of the charities Lynne supported and one of the beneficiaries for donations made in her memory. FALL 2015 Luna loves her new We have something for everyone. See you in September! !3 F A Y E T T E H U M A N E S O C I E T Y Saving Shelby The Fayette Humane Society will not give up on Shelby (aka Beauty), a striking black seven-month-old purebred German Shepherd who we rescued in March, saving her from euthanization due to injuries from a dog attack. But now Shelby has had a major setback in her recovery from a broken tibia and fibula, and we are asking for your help. Shelby started to face complications due to an infection that entered her leg from the bite wounds. Her body started to reject the plate that had been surgically implanted and subsequently required a bone graft and laser therapy. At eight weeks postsurgery, the x-rays showed her leg healed enough to remove the plate. But when the veterinarian opened up her leg to take the plate out, she discovered the bone was still not stable and more time was needed. Shelby sports her new pink cast. After patiently enduring 15 weeks of crate rest and limited exercise, Shelby went in for a third surgery and the plate was removed. Sadly it wasn’t long before she started to hold up her leg and was unable to bear weight. The vet discovered the bone had broken again due to the infection, causing it to be weaker than what showed on the x-ray. This means Shelby must endure a fourth surgery to have the plate put back in and restart the recovery process. Shelby’s foster mother says it best: “Shelby so badly wants to play with the other dogs. She wants to be able to play and roll in the grass. Despite her young age, Shelby is handling her predicament with wisdom and very little complaining. She is a beautiful dog inside and out.” The FHS is committed to saving Shelby’s leg. Unfortunately, the additional surgeries have exceeded the initial funding available for her. Please consider making a contribution to help this puppy be able to enjoy the long life she has ahead of her. You may use the donation form in the newsletter, or visit our website at www.fayettehumane.org. And, as always, thank you. Paws to Give Donations are needed at any level and are greatly appreciated! FALL 2015 4 F A Y E T T E H U M A N E S O C I E T Y Pets Need Blood Donors, Too When several sick kitties needed blood transfusions this past year, Scarface, a Maine Coon mix, came to the rescue. Well, in a manner of speaking. "Scarface has an extremely rare blood type, so we brought him to donate at the Best Friends Blood Bank," explained his human companion, Raquel Gonzalez. "A needle was put in one of his veins for approximately five minutes, and he was happy to help." After being recipients of a little kitty kindness, she said, the other cats are now doing well. “The same circumstances that warrant blood transfusions in humans apply to pets—illness, disease or trauma,” said Corinne Eckert, a veterinarian technician with Southern Crescent Animal Emergency Clinic in Fayetteville. "Usually it’s acute blood loss from accidents. Sometimes a pet has gotten into poison, and some pets with certain types of cancers, autoimmune disorders or parasites will need blood. Whenever there’s a rapid change toward anemia, the body just can't compensate." Scarface “With canine blood transfusions, blood type and antigens can help ensure a good match, but it isn't as critical as in humans. Dogs have 12 blood types, but we can pretty much give any dog's blood to any other dog in an emergency first-time transfusion," Eckert said. Just as a cat's personality can be more finicky, so can their blood, even though cats only have three different blood types. "Cats have a higher chance of an adverse reaction,” Eckert said, “so it’s more important that they have a compatible match." Animal blood, like human blood, has a limited shelf life and must be constantly replenished. That is why local veterinary clinics rely on the Best Friends Blood Bank, a place where pets can donate blood. To donate, dogs need to weigh at least 50 pounds, be under eight years old and have a preferred blood type. Cats must weigh at least ten pounds, be under nine years old and live indoors. Most importantly, both cats and dogs need to have gentle temperaments for tolerating the procedure. Just like the Red Cross, the Best Friends Blood Bank in Decatur is looking for volunteer cats and dogs as blood donors. Besides saving lives of other pets, blood donors receive complimentary physical exams and full blood work, including heartworm tests and infectious disease screenings. Call 678-592-3985 to schedule an initial donor consultation today, or for more information, please check their website at bestfriendsbloodbank.com. FHS Volunteers Attend the Best Friends National Conference Eight Fayette Humane Society volunteers attended the Best Friends National Conference at the Cobb Galleria July 16-19. Best Friends Animal Society is a nonprofit organization building no-kill programs and partnerships that will bring about a day when there are “No More Homeless Pets.” The Society, whose mission statement is “Save Them All,” is known worldwide as a leader in the animal care community and operates the largest animal sanctuary in the nation in Kanab, Utah. As a network partner, the FHS has been fortunate to receive several spay/neuter grants from Best Friends. And last year, Best Friends accepted and subsequently found a forever home for Grayson, a cat we rescued after he was deliberately set on fire by gang members. The conference featured classes on adoption strategies, fundraising, animal health and well-being, leadership skills, and community outreach. It was also an opportunity for volunteers to network with animal-care professionals and people from other rescue organizations. The volunteers are excited to share the inspiring information and implement fresh ideas to improve the lives of the animals we rescue. The separation was heartbreaking for both Autumn and her mom. Autumn would do best in a quiet home with adults or older children and no other pets. This little tabby with white feet is declawed, spayed, and current on vaccines. This handsome cat is Nigel. He is a loving, affectionate 10-year-old cat. His former family had to give him up when their new baby developed terrible allergies. He would love to sit in your lap and cuddle. Nigel enjoys being the focus of attention, and will happily follow you around the house. FALL 2015 Molly is a two-year-old, 71-pound Chocolate Lab. She is a happy-go-lucky young lady who enjoys running and playing. She's affectionate, playful and full of fun energy. Molly gets along well with other dogs and all people but not with cats! This girl is looking for a new home because her former "dad" passed away. Molly is a great family dog with that wonderful Lab temperament. Clyde is a seven-year-old English Coonhound/Lab mix. This happy boy is up for adoption because his owner became ill. He likes lots of exercise and will make an excellent pet. Clyde is very loyal and will do anything to please his new family. Clyde gets along so well with other dogs and loves to be petted and doted upon by any and all people. C I E T Y Visit our website to see more pets waiting for their forever homes! Belle is a wonderful young cat who was found in a barn near Brooks along with her sister, Gracie. She is spayed, vaccinated and ready for you to take her home. Belle is very warm and affectionate and also loves to play. This beauty is Miss Peggy. She is a medium-haired tortoiseshell cat. The vet says she is young and estimated to be about two years old. Miss Peggy was rescued along with her newborn kittens. She is a little shy at first but once she gets to know you, Miss Peggy loves to sit in your lap and cuddle. Piper is a young Bulldog/ Boxer mix. She is 45 pounds of love with a beautiful brindle coat and a sweet personality. Piper is energetic and will benefit from daily walks and lots of play time in your fenced-in backyard. She loves to play with other dogs and would enjoy canine visitors or a trip to the dog park. Piper would love to find a family who will love her forever. Brody is a 10-year-old Hound mix who will warm your heart. Sadly, Brody’s owner fell and is now unable to take care of him. The owner wanted us to share that Brody is an amazing dog! He will make an excellent addition to your home. Brody would be forever grateful for the chance to be included in your family and to share lots of happiness and fun with you. 6 F A Y E T T E H U M A N E S O C I E T Y Consider advertising in our Pet Gazette.
