Snapshot of
ECHUCA MOAMA
Located on the banks of the mighty
Murray River, the twin towns of Echuca
Moama are the closest point of the
Murray to Melbourne – just a two and a
half hour drive.
Boasting more sunny days than
Queensland’s Gold Coast and an
average annual temperature of 22
degrees, Echuca Moama is a great
destination to visit in all seasons.
Echuca Moama represents not only a
bygone era with horse-drawn carriages
and paddlesteamers but it also
showcases all the conveniences of the
modern era.
The calendar of events and festivals
in Echuca Moama is the envy of most
regional destinations in the country.
To name a couple, Echuca Moama hosts
the world’s biggest water ski event being
the Club Marine Southern 80 and the
highly successful Riverboats Music
Festival – the largest of its type on the
Murray.
We have a great variety of local produce
that is available across a range of iconic
restaurants, cafes, hotels and clubs
and accommodation is aplenty with an
endless selection of options.
The national parks and wetlands in the
Echuca Moama region are also of great
environmental and cultural importance.
They are the base for many recreational
activities including fishing, bushwalking
and camping.

Echuca Moama’s
HISTORY AND CULTURE
Echuca and Moama were founded
by ex-convicts. Cattle dealer James
Maiden came to Moama nearly 10
years before Henry Hopwood’s arrival
in Echuca. He had been sentenced to
death for the burglary of silverware
and candles before the sentence
was commuted to seven years’
transportation.
In 1845, Maiden established a punt and
an inn on the northern side of the Murray,
in an area soon known as Maiden’s Punt.
The area became known as Moama
meaning ‘place of the dead’ in 1851.
Henry Hopwood had been convicted
for receiving stolen silk and sentenced
to 14 years transportation. After two
stints as a policeman, he arrived on the
southern side of the river in 1850 and set
up a rival punt and pub in 1853. The site
became known as Echuca in 1854, a term
meaning ‘meeting of the waters’.
Hopwood was the more enterprising
of the former convicts. His suggestion
of a river port formed the basis of the
river trade which was paramount to
the economic development of the
nation, opening up inland Australia
for settlement. Echuca soon became
Australia’s largest inland port and was
even nominated as a possible national
capital in 1891.
From then on, Echuca Moama prospered.
Barges and boats graced the river, plying
their trade.
1. PS Hero. 2, 3 & 4. Port of Echuca Discovery Centre.
5. Echuca Wharf.
Echuca was the main ship building centre
for the river transport industry for many
years catering for a growing demand for
red gum for wharf piles, railway sleepers
and building materials.
The district supported a dozen sawmills
in the 1870s, cutting more than 1000 logs
a week.
The expansion of the railways from
Melbourne, improvement to roads and
fickle river conditions all combined to
lessen Echuca’s importance and by the
1890s, the paddlesteamer fleet was in
decline.
An economic depression and the collapse
of several banks virtually ended Echuca’s
role as a major economic centre and the
population began to disperse.

The Iconic
PORT OF ECHUCA
The historic Port of Echuca is recognised
as one of Australia’s finest heritage icons
and is home to the largest riverboat fleet
in the world.
Steeped in history, the Port of Echuca is
Echuca Moama’s tourism icon.
Today, the Port represents the
pageantry of the river trade’s heyday
and offers an extraordinary insight into
our pioneering days.
Learn about the lively river trade of
the 1800s, hear fantastic tales of the
Murray River and visit the Star Hotel’s
underground bar and escape tunnel,
which was used in the 1890s.
A number of paddleboats offer cruises
along the mighty Murray from Echuca.
Choose from the PS Pevensey, built in
1911 and known as the PS Philadelphia
in the television mini-series ‘All The
Rivers Run’.
Ride on the PS Adelaide, the world’s
oldest wooden-hulled paddlesteamer
which was built in 1866 and used as a
logging boat for more than 90 years.
The charming PS Alexander Arbuthnot
was the last boat built for the riverboat
trade, in 1923, and is also available for
cruises.
PS Canberra and the Pride of the
Murray can be found plying the
river, offering cruises complete with
captain’s commentary. PS Emmylou,
the “prettiest paddlesteamer on the
Murray River,” is the only wood-fired
paddlesteamer in the world to offer
regular overnight cruises.
PS Hero is arguably the most
luxurious paddlesteamer operating
on the Murray River today and is
available for private charter, overnight
accommodation, weddings, events and
corporate functions.

BIRDWATCHING
worth crowing about
Australia is blessed with an array of bird life, and the river red
gum forests of Murray Valley National and Regional Parks
are no exception. Towering majestically over a network of
waterways, these river red gum reserves stretch for over
100,000 hectares, making it the world’s largest continuous
region of river red gum forest, and home to a stunning variety
of birds.
Murray Valley National and Regional Parks are ideal places
to get up close with the gums and their amazing bird life.
Whether it’s in the trees, the skies or the wetlands at the Reed
Beds Bird Hide – this is birdwatching at its best.
Enjoy the company of egrets and cormorants, keep an eye out for the endangered
superb parrot, and watch like a hawk for night herons, black swans, yellow rosellas,
ducks, falcons, cockatoos, tree creepers, pardalotes, kingfishers and owls.
The river red gums are simply unbeatable for birdwatching.

ENJOY RIVER REDGUM
parks along the Murray
Explore, experience and enjoy the
beautiful river red gum parks and
reserves along the Victoria / NSW border.
There’s nothing better for your wellbeing
than getting out in nature. Every year the
Murray River attracts thousands of visitors
to its waters and surrounds including the
magnificent river red gum forests and
internationally significant wetlands.
Together the parks along the Murray in
Victoria and New South Wales form the
largest river red gum forest in the world
with an abundance of flora and wildlife.
Pitch a tent, launch a canoe, enjoy a
scenic drive, take a dip, drop a line or go
for a nature walk. Here’s just a snapshot
of what you can do.
Birdwatching The Ramsar listed
wetlands in Barmah National Park, the
adjoining Murray Valley National and
Regional Parks and Gunbower
National Park are large water bird
breeding areas. With more than 200
recorded bird species, you are bound to
see birds nesting in the trees or soaring
overhead as you soak up the sounds of
the bush. Look out Brolgas, Spoonbills
and Sea Eagles.

Camping Camp out with family
and friends in dispersed camping
areas along the Murray River.
There are toilets and fireplaces at
Barmah Lakes, Ulupna Island, Barooga
& Mathoura. While many Regional Parks
and reserves are dog friendly, pets are
not permitted in the national parks.
Boating and Canoeing There are many
boat launching areas along the Murray
River. The two hour Gunbower Island
Canoe Trail, starting near Koondrook,
reveals remnants of a bygone forestry
era, Aboriginal culture and a bird
sanctuary. For a multi day experience try
the Edward River Canoe Trail.
Bushwalking Take an invigorating
walk to explore the majestic river
red gum forests. The short self-guided
Yamyabuc Discovery Trail at Barmah
National Park is a good introduction to
the natural and cultural features of the
Barmah forest.
Help keep parks and reserves litter free
by taking your rubbish with you. Don’t
forget to pick up a copy of The Murray
River Guardian for more information on
safe and sustainable camping guidelines.
Some roads, tracks and campgrounds
experience seasonal closures to
reflect current weather conditions.
Remember to check conditions
before you travel. This information
is available from Visitor

The Murray River region is one of Australia’s
oldest living cultural landscapes.
Thousands of years before European
settlement, the Murray River brought
abundance to the many tribes along its
banks where the traditions were passed on
generation after generation.
Existence of Aboriginal occupation of the
Murray River starts over 40,000 years ago.
1
2
There are many tribes still in the Murray River
region and if you’re observant, you can spot
Aboriginal artifacts such as canoe trees, fish
traps and boundary markers. There are other
ways to engage with their story and Dreamtime.
To Aboriginal Australians the land, sea, sky,
moon and stars are part of their spirit, culture
and story known as the Dreaming. Each tribe
has their own dreaming story.
The fundamental of all Aboriginal cultures is
respect. Respect for people, land and beliefs.
Please do not remove rocks or other objects
from Aboriginal land or waters without the
permission of traditional owners. Disturbing
cultural sites is prohibited by Australian Law.
2
Opening in early 2015, the Dungula Cultural
Centre (within Moama on Murray Resort) is a
place where you can learn more about the rich
indigenous heritage of the region and explore
the beauty, the strength and the resilience of
one of the world’s oldest surviving cultures and
their connection to the country we live in. For
more information call (03) 5480 3031.
1 & 2. Sculptures from Dungula Cultural Centre, designed in consultation with
Clive Atkinson and Stuart Spragg. 2. Bark Canoe Tree.
3
Aboriginal bark canoes were constructed from a
single piece of bark that was removed from a tree
trunk using hatchets and wooden mallets.

REGION

Set on the majestic Murray River, Echuca Moama
is renowned for its unsurpassed visitor experiences.
Now there is even more to discover in the towns and
districts which surround these historic riverside ports
- all within an hour’s drive of Echuca Moama.
The Echuca Moama region is jam-packed with
unique and memorable country experiences.
You’ll stand on sites where history was made and
you’ll be delighted by small businesses offering
you delicious produce, a comfy bed for the night,
and discover stunning sculptures, outback stock
routes, historic goldfields, leafy bushland and
relaxing river cruises.
By touring our region, you’ll come to understand
how people on the land care for it. From the
original custodians, the Aboriginal tribes, over
thousands of years, to the early pioneering
families.
The countryside is dotted with niche businesses
offering you delicious delights, handmade
and nurtured from paddock to plate and our
beautiful local produce is also available from
farmgates, orchards, cellar doors and local
farmers markets.

The Echuca Moama region is surrounded in
rich natural habitat from River Red Gum and
Box forests to significant parks and wetlands
abundant with native birds, animals, plants and
trees. The region is home to some spectacular
waterways, including the Murray, Edward,
Campaspe and Goulburn Rivers, which provide
popular water sports, camping and fishing
locations.
The road network around the region ranges
from major highway arterials to gravel bush
tracks. Caravans are able to access most roads,
however, care should be taken when using river
tracks.

Often referred to as the “Fauna Park
town”, Kyabram is well known for the
internationally acclaimed Kyabram Fauna

a town mural off the main street, while
the central shopping precinct provides a

shops and stores selling vintage
wares. Nearby, Waranga Basin is
a haven for water sports, while
the now deserted township of
Whroo provides an insight into
what was once an extensive
mining operation. Don’t miss the

Festival each Easter.
Stanhope boasts some
