Palm Springs Modernism Week 2011 includes many of the audience
favorites such as the annual architecture symposium, the Architecture
and Design film series in association with Design Onscreen, lectures,
the vintage car show and other activities that will be held in various
venues throughout the City of Palm Springs. Keep up with The Palm
Springs Modernism Week i-Phone App available through iTunes,
it's free.
The popular architecture tours which often sell-out will now be offered
every day from Saturday the 19th thru Sunday the 27th due to popular
demand, twice a day on weekends and once a day on week days.
There will be several home tours, two of them organized by Modernism
Week and others organized by neighborhood associations.
There is a NEW Design Lecture Series with exciting subjects and
speakers...
There is a VERY special event planned as our tribute to mid century
fashion...

Modernism Week promotes public awareness of the desert's mid-century
modern design and architecture. Modernism Week celebrates the post-war
design aesthetic and culture through educational and charitable activities.

What is Modernism Week?
Modernism Week, the only such event in the country, is an exciting 9-day
celebration of mid-century modern design, architecture and culture. This
design aesthetic, originated in the 1950s and 60s, was typified by clean,
simple lines and celebrated elegant informality which came to define desert
modernism.
In the winter of 2006, following the success of both the MODERNISM
SHOW which had started in 2001 and the annual symposium organized by
the ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN COUNCIL of the PALM SPRINGS ART
MUSEUM, a few local design and architecture aficionados created
MODERNISM WEEK to showcase Palm Springs' world-renowned midcentury modern architecture. (A Palm Springs Modernism Week history in

Among the members of the initial steering committee were representatives
from the PALM SPRINGS PRESERVATION FOUNDATION, the PALM
SPRINGS MODERN COMMITTEE, the PALM SPRINGS HISTORICAL
SOCIETY the THE ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN COUNCIL of THE
PALM SPRINGS ART MUSEUM.
MODERNISM WEEK has expanded into a 10 day period filled with a variety
of events including architecture tours, films, lectures, an architecture
symposium, educational events as well as chic and fun parties in cool midcentury modern homes. We will be celebrating our 6th Annual Palm Springs
Modernism Week, February 17-27, 2011. We hope you will join us!
Palm Springs Modern Committee
The Palm Springs Modern Committee is a non-profit, volunteer organization
dedicated to promoting and maintaining the heritage of modern architecture
and design in Palm Springs and the entire Coachella Valley. Our goal is to
be a meeting place for Palm Springs Modernists, both residents and
nonresidents, with the ability to quickly mobilize support for urgent
preservation issues.
Palm Springs Art Museum
Located downtown in an architecturally-significant E. Stewart Williamsdesigned building, the Palm Springs Art Museum features exciting
exhibitions of contemporary, Native American, Western and Pre-Columbian
art in spacious galleries. It features two sculpture gardens, stimulating
lectures and educational programs for all ages, and offers diverse
performances at its Annenberg Theater.

Palm Springs Modernism Show
The Palm Springs Convention Center will host 75 noted national and
international decorative and fine arts dealers presenting all design
movements of the 20th Century. The event is scheduled for February 1820, 2011. A wide range of vintage 20th Century furniture and decorative arts
will be presented and sold by 90 exhibitors, many from the West Coast, but
some who come from as far away as New York, Philadelphia, Boston,
Detroit, Dallas, Denver, and Miami. The show is produced by Dolphin
Promotions.
Palm Springs Preservation Foundation
The Palm Springs Preservation Foundation is a non-profit organization
whose mission is “to educate and promote public awareness of the
importance of preserving the historical resources and architecture of the city
of Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley area.”

of local architecture. You'll learn the history of Palm Springs
architecture and the celebrated architects that put modernism on the

Australian friends, will explore the untold story of mid 20th century
Australian modernism through architecture and design. Investigating the

illustrated slide show & talk by co-authors Michael Kinerk & Dennis
Wilhelm, Rediscovering Art Deco U.S.A. The speakers worked closely
for 13 years with the late, great Barbara Baer Capitman, visionary and
champion of The World's First 20th Century Historic District. Capitman
founded Miami Design Preservation Leaguein 1976. The authors were
charter members of MDPL. Their talk will highlight a series of wins and
losses and the economic impact that historic preservation has had in
the city.

Hella Jongerius: Contemporary Archetypes
This double feature spotlights two films on the world’s brightest women
designers. Studio Gang Architects, (2009, Tom Piper, 27 minutes)
explores the design process of one of architecture’s newest rising stars
--Jeanne Gang, creator of Chicago’s ground-breaking 82-story Aqua
Tower building. Hella Jongerius, (2009, Amie Knox, 30 minutes) profiles
one of the most innovative and creative designers working today. Dutch

In 1960, Fortune magazine got the most parisian of the humanist
photographers, Robert Doisneau, to make a story about Palm Springs.
The just released book of his recently rediscovered pictures is the
source of inspiration for Vladimir Visak, a cinematographer from the
cultural European TV channel, ARTE, to revisit Palm Springs, 50 years

Robin and Lucienne Day, one of England's most glamorous couples,
transformed British design after World War II. His elegant furniture and

Design Lecture Series: Gerard O’Brien: Perspectives on MidCentury California Design
Gerard O’Brien’s Reform Gallery focuses on post-war California
Design, with a concentration on handcrafted works from the Studio
Craft Movement. In 2005, Julius Shulman photographed Reform’s
show: “California Design: an exhibition in celebration of California
design 1956-1976,” the seminal exhibitions held at the former
Pasadena Museum. In this presentation, O’Brien will be referencing
Shulman’s photographs as a basis for discussion on the Studio Craft
Movement and the history of the artists featured in the images.

Coachella Valley as well as the Blue Sky Prefab home featured in
Dwell Magazine. Mr. Otto is president of Hot Purple Energy, an

a tour of the home highlighting the many energy solutions.

of John Lautner
"The purpose of architecture," said John Lautner, "is to create timeless,
free, joyous spaces for all activities in life." Infinite Space traces the
lifelong quest of visionary genius John Lautner to create "architecture
that has no beginning and no end." Director Murray Grigor explores
Lautner's dramatic spaces with choreographed camera moves, as
Lautner himself provides the commentary via archival recordings.

Lecture by Bill Stern, Executive Director, Museum of California Design
California’s designers confronted the material shortages of the postWorld War ll period by developing a pared-down aesthetic which drew
on locally available materials and required minimal investment. The
result was many start-up companies producing distinctive household
products in what we now call Mid-Century Modern style. Illustrated
with examples by Charles and Ray Eames, Luther Conover, Dorothy
Schindele, Greta Magnusson Grossman and Van Keppel and Green.

Most recognized for the iconic Texas land-art piece, Cadillac Ranch,
the 1970s art/architecture collective Ant Farm questioned the
boundaries of architecture and everything else in the process. This is
the first film, (2010, Directors Laura Harrison and Elizabeth Federici, 78
minutes) to delve into the work of these renegade explorers in both
architecture and performance art. Radical architects, video pioneers,
and mordantly funny cultural commentators, the Ant Farmers created a
body of deeply subversive work that presaged today’s cultural

We are pleased to announce our special Modernism Week exhibit, “Palm Springs
Modern 2011". Twenty-nine photographs have been made based on the listings
in the Palm Springs Modern Committee’s A Map of Modern Palm Springs.
Included in the collection is the iconic Kaufmann House designed by Richard
Neutra. Among others, works by Albert Frey, E. Stewart Williams, William F.
Cody, and Donald Wexler are featured. The purpose of this exhibit is to
demonstrate that many of these important works still exist and can be seen and
appreciated from public streets. Roger C. Palmer, volunteer Registrar and
member of the Palm Springs Historical Society Board of Directors, made the color

History of Palm Springs Modernism Week
What is now an international event began with a simple idea: to augment the two-day
Modernism Show with more reasons to celebrate modernism.
The Palm Springs Modernism Show was first showcased in 2001. It followed a history of
Modernism shows around the country that had begun in New York City in 1985. Soon
after, the Miami Modernism Show followed in 1994, heralding the rediscovery of the
city’s Art Deco architecture in South Beach. That discovery helped reinvent the city as a
hot and trendy destination for architecture aficionados.
Fueled most notably by national and international media, a similar pattern emerged in
Palm Springs. Working with Dolphin Promotions, Jacques Caussin, who is now Board
Chair of Modernism Week, started the Palm Springs Modernism Show in 2001 and it
has steadily grown in stature since in its inception. Now in its 9th year, the Palm Springs
Modernism Show, held at the Palm Springs Convention Center, has become one of the
country’s premier marketplaces for national and international modernist decorative and
fine arts.
The Palm Springs Art Museum began hosting its popular annual architecture
symposium and home tour in 1999 which helped spark the appreciation for Palm
Springs' architecture. The Museum’s efforts to shine a light on the city’s renowned midcentury modern architects such as E. Stewart Williams, Albert Frey, John Porter Clark,
John Lautner, Don Wexler and Bill Krisel among others, continued to fan interest in the
city’s astonishing concentration of mid-century architecture.
The growing interest in our mid-century modern architecture resulted in wide national
and international media attention. Initially, much of the media reports centered on the
remarkably exacting restoration of the Kaufmann House in Palm Springs. Eventually,
the media discovered the Kaufmann House was only one of hundreds important and
architecturally-significant structures in Palm Springs.
While Palm Springs has long enjoyed worldwide fame as a celebrity haven and an
international vacation destination, it began attracting a new tourism niche for
architecture buffs. Its mid-century modern architecture squarely put Palm Springs on the
map for cultural tourism as well as fun in the sun.
The confluence of these factors helped create the ideal timing and climate for a weeklong celebration of modernism in Palm Springs. Thus, in 2006 the first Palm Springs
Modernism Week was born to promote and celebrate the ideals and culture of
modernism. Through the efforts of a steering committee of devoted community leaders
comprised of the Architecture and Design Council of the Palm Springs Art Museum, the
Palm Springs Modern Committee, the Palm Springs Preservation Foundation, and the
Palm Springs Historical Society, they planned and implemented the first Modernism
Week following the Modernism Show. It featured a week of lectures, architecture tours,
films and glamorously “mod” receptions.
From its humble beginnings, Modernism Week has continued to grow exponentially
from a week to ten days of events. As the variety and sophistication of events has
continued to grow, a greater number of people from around the globe are drawn to join
us in this celebration which has fueled a robust “mod-tourism” niche in Palm Springs.
People have been known to travel from Australia and Europe to participate in
Modernism Week.
Modernism Week has firmly established Palm Springs as the world’s mecca of
modernism resulting in public awareness that has helped preserve the distinctive
architecture which has so prominently defined Palm Springs’ unique character.
In the summer of 2009, Modernism Week grew from a steering committee to its own
registered non-profit organization. Its new board of directors, working with a Modernism
Week executive director, is committed to producing fun and interesting events that will
inspire and engage new and longtime modernism aficionados. Check the schedule of

two major Modernism Week Partners -- the National Trust for Historic Preservation and
the California Preservation Foundation. This collaboration and affiliation with these
