Cup-A-Thon XXVI. A fun Ceramics and
Sculpture Department fundraiser that pushes
the envelope of functional ceramics. Come
stock up on unique, handmade cups and bowls
in the Showalter Hughes Community Gallery,
Friday and Saturday 7:00–10:00 p.m. and
during Open House on Saturday.

Child/Adult Workshop: “Mask”arade—
Clay Wall Hangings with Doug Bringle.
Make and decorate a clay mask to suit your
fancy: animal or human, grotesque or romantic,
scary or friendly. Directions are clear so young
children and beginners can create family heirlooms during this workshop.

Alice & William Jenkins Gallery—Lyrical Harmonies: Landscape Paintings by
Stephen Bach, Larry Moore, and Don
Sondag. This show features the work of three
central Florida painters whose landscapes
emphasize the beauty and tranquility of nature.
Balanced compositions, harmonious colors and
subtle tonal changes create a feeling of stillness
and calm. These paintings suggest that it is still
possible to experience serenity when we immerse
our awareness in the environment. Curated by
Dennis Schmalstig. Lecture and opening reception Friday, August 6, 7:00–9:30 p.m.
Showalter Hughes Community Gallery—
Summer ArtCamp Exhibition. Featuring one
completed project from each of the over 300
ArtCamp participants, including painting, drawing, ceramics, sculpture and photography. Opening reception Saturday, August 21, from 5:00
to 7:00 p.m. Curated by the ArtCamp staff.

10th Annual Free Grant Workshop for Individual Artists. Crealdé’s Executive Director
Peter Schreyer, an internationally exhibited
artist and past grant review panelist on the state
and local level, will conduct this free workshop
to inform artists about grant opportunities from
the State of Florida, United Arts, and other
organizations.
October 9 to January 15
14th Annual Benefit Auction. This popular
event, held at Crealdé’s main campus, includes
live music, live and silent auctions, and great
food. Proceeds fund Crealdé programs and help
build our endowment to ensure future growth
and sustainability.
Alice & William Jenkins and Heritage
Center Galleries—The Art of Hope: A
Regional Juried Exhibition Commemorating the First African American U.S.
President, Barack Obama. Artists from all
visual mediums from the Southeastern U.S.
are invited to enter this juried exhibition
commemorating the hope surrounding
the Obama election and presidency.
Curated by Bobby Scroggins, University
of Kentucky. Opening reception Friday,
October 9, 6:00–9:00 p.m.

Child/Adult Workshop: Jack-o’-Lanterns—
A Holiday Tradition in Clay with Doug
Bringle. Fashion and carve a clay pumpkin into
a jack-o’-lantern to delight you and your trick or
treaters for years to come. Directions are clear
so younger children and beginners can create
family heirlooms during this workshop.

Gallery—Directors’ Choice. Featuring the
recent work of 12 artists from Crealdé’s diverse
faculty, including artists long associated with the
school as well as new additions to the faculty, in
photography, painting, sculpture and ceramics.

Visiting Artist Workshop with Perry Dilbeck: The Holga Camera. Create fine art
images using a simple “plastic” camera. Learn
the history of the Holga camera and examine
the various bodies of work taken with this toy.
The technical aspects of film loading, focusing,
exposing, light leak prevention, and more will
be covered. Participants shoot on location and
bring film back for processing and review.

Photo Festival XVIII: A Day of
Workshops. The Photography
Department’s annual fundraiser
gives students the choice of five

business. Topics range from gallery representation to marketing and promotion.
Weekend Workshop: Focus on Digital.
There will be demonstrations on PhotoShop,
Camera Controls, Printing and Color Management. Students can select five of the ten
photography workshops being offered. Come
and enjoy this fundraiser for the Photography
Department.

The 37th Annual Winter Park Autumn Arts
Festival. Over 125 Florida artists display their
work at this festival, which includes live music,
food, and children’s art workshops. Co-sponsored by the Winter Park Chamber of Commerce, the City of Winter Park and Crealdé.

Weekend Workshop: Make Holiday Photo
Cards with Jon Manchester & Rick Lang.
In the morning you will have the opportunity to take family portraits to be used
in the making of holiday cards. In the
afternoon, students will have time to
adjust their images and prepare them to
be printed as cards at the local camera
shop or drug store.

11th Annual Holiday Sale. Established and emerging artists affiliated
with Crealdé offer their fine artwork
for sale to the public. A portion of
the proceeds supports Crealdé programs. Held outdoors in the Contemporary Sculpture Garden, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Saturday and 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sunday.
Crealdé School of Art is a community-based
non-profit art organization established in 1975, which
features an affordable, sequential curriculum of over 90
studio courses and workshops in painting and drawing,
photography, and ceramics and sculpture for adults and
children, with hands-on experience emphasized. Also,
Crealdé offers an award-winning scholarship and outreach program to special populations from the diverse
Central Florida community. Our two galleries feature
changing multi-disciplinary visual art exhibitions by
artists from Florida, the nation, and the world. Central
Florida’s only contemporary sculpture garden showcses
over 60 outdoor pieces of art.

Aloma Avenue, at 600 St. Andrews Blvd., Winter
Park, FL 32792 and is open 9:00–4:00 Monday–

Heritage Center Gallery—Bigger Than A
Scrapbook: The Talking Quilts of Lauren
Austin. This exhibition tells stories with photographic portraits in fabric that portray lifestyle,
family, political and legal themes relating to
the black experience and the African Diaspora
worldwide. This two-venue exhibition, curated
by Henry Sinn, will open with a reception held
on January 15 from 7 to 10 p.m., beginning
with a gallery talk at Crealdé School of Art’s
Jenkins Gallery, followed by a live-music reception at The Heritage Center.

Winter Park Unity Heritage Festival. This Martin Luther King weekend festival features live
music, games and ethnic food. The Hannibal
Square Heritage Center will be open for tours,
free children’s art workshops, and the unveiling of Phase VI of the Heritage Collection. On
Sunday at 4:00 p.m. a special Unity Festival
reception will be held for Lauren Austin.

Visiting Artist Workshop: Plein Air Painting
with Morgan Samuel Price. Each artist will
have individual time with the instructor; the finale of each day is the critique. Be prepared with
sketches or images to develop the paintings.

Visiting Artist Workshop: Folk Art Painting with Linda Schäpper. Recapture the free
spirited imagination of your youth! Bring your
favorite photos of family members or community events and use them to create a finished
painting. Folk Art painter Linda Schäpper
is most widely recognized for her “Family of
Christ” tapestry that became the backdrop for
Pope John Paul II’s October 1995 mass in
Central Park, New York.

Festival Attendees. Special Reception for
Zora! Festival tour participants, and panel discussion, “The Genius of Zora Neale Hurston,”
in partnership with the Zora Neale Hurston
Festival of the Arts and Humanities.
Weekend Workshop with Rick Lang:
How to Photograph 2D Art. In this workshop
students will learn how to photograph 2-D artwork. Subjects such as lighting, White Balance
selection and alignment will be discussed. This
is for artists who want to make better quality
reproductions of their work to enter shows.

Weekend Workshop: Welding Sculptures
with David Cumbie. Come and create your
own small sculpture. Students will learn how
to cut steel with a torch and weld with an arc
welder. Materials are included but students may
bring their own metal parts to weld.
February 7
United Arts ArtsFest 2010. More than 80
cultural organizations will participate in the
four-day ArtsFest, which kicks off the United
Arts fundraising campaign. On Sunday, February 7th, Crealdé will host gallery tours and free
hands-on workshops for children and adults at
both Crealdé and the Heritage Center.
Powertex Painting & Sculpture Workshop
with Regine Dossche. Powertex is an environmentally friendly liquid fabric hardener. It can
be used to create beautiful textures on canvas
or durable sculptures. Learn to make a frame
as base for a figurine and dress it up; add a text
or picture, and learn the use of colored powder
pigments. Step by step, one on one instruction is
provided to complete three pieces of art.
February 27 & 28
Weekend Workshop: Portrait Sculpture in
Clay with David Cumbie. Students will work
with a live model and explore the fundamentals
of creating a clay head beginning with basic
proportions. All work will be fired at the end of
the workshop.

Visiting Artist Workshop with Patrick Van
Dusen: The Business of Wedding Photography. Students will learn what it takes to start
and run a wedding photography business. Patrick
will explain the concepts of finding customers,
preparing for and shooting the wedding, making
the final product and selling reprints. Subjects
such as fees, advertising, and customer relations
will be covered. This class is designed for those
who want to find out what is needed to become a
successful wedding photographer.

Weekend Workshop: Majolica with Jane
Skinner. A pottery technique of painting colored stains onto a white glaze so the colors fuse
into the surface when fired, Majolica produces
a colorful hand-painted work of art. Jane will
explain Majolica glazes and stains, recipes,
brushwork and wax resist techniques. Bring your
own low-fire bisque, or purchase a tile. Slide
show and discussion to follow.

Photography Workshop: Travel the
Back Roads to Historic Places in
Central Florida with Peter
Schreyer. Explore hidden
architectural and cultural
treasures in Volusia and Lake
County that provide a window
to the past. Peter Schreyer is an
internationally exhibited, award winning photographer who has been widely
recognized for documenting Florida’s cultural
landscape for nearly three decades; including
Arts Educator of the Year in 2009.
March 13
Paper Workshop with Hye Shin. Fold, roll
and cut papers to forms that can be built into
items such as bags, boxes, and bowls. You will
design shapes with papers that forward into
textiles. Discover your own fabric design to
make decorative and wearable objects. A range
of stitch techniques and interfacings will be
explored to give strength to the shapes.

Weekend Workshop: Shades of Light—
Figure Drawing with Paul McNear. Students will learn how to capture the essence of
light while learning the basic tenets of drawing,
working from nude and costumed models. The
optical mixing of layered shading, as well as the
analysis of the effects of light and substructure
of values and temperature will be stressed.

4th Annual Central Florida Watercolor
Society Exhibition. Selected works from almost
200 Central Florida Watercolor Society members will be juried for prize money and ribbons.

Heritage Center Gallery—Just Above the
Water: Florida Folk Art. Based on five years
of research and a book by curators Kristin Congdon and Tina Bucuvalas, the exhibition looks
closely at the lives of 35 Florida folk artists and
reveals how their work is inspired by everyday
customs, environments, and community traditions. On loan from The Museum of Florida
History in Tallahassee. Opening reception and
lecture on Friday, April 9, 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Child/Adult Workshop. Whistles and Ocarinas: Clay Wind Instruments with Doug
Bringle. Turn fantasy-shaped clay vessels into
whistles and gently voiced, many-toned ocarinas. Directions are clear so young children and
beginners can create family heirlooms during
this workshop.

Weekend Workshop: Making Molds for
Sculpture with David Cumbie. Students may
bring small objects for mold-making and create
latex molds for casting. Explore traditional and
new casting methods; many materials for reproducing artwork will be introduced.

Alice & William Jenkins Gallery—Requesting Miracles: Votive Offerings from Diverse
Cultures. In partnership with UCF’s Cultural
Heritage Alliance, this installation, reminiscent
of religious spaces in Mexico and Brazil, features selections of wood carvings made as offerings to deities in return for miracles. Co-curated
by Kristin Congdon, Natalia da Silva, and Rima
Jabbur. Opening reception 7:00–9:30 p.m. with
a dance by Brazilian Peilourinho and a gallery
talk at 8:00 p.m.
March 27 & 28
10th Annual Spring Sale. Established and
emerging artists affiliated with Crealdé offer
their fine artwork for sale to the public. A portion of the proceeds supports Crealdé programs.

Weekend Workshop: Introduction to Mold
Making with David Cumbie. This class will
demonstrate various methods of making molds
with alginate, plaster and Fleximold wax. Students will assist in preparing molds for casting
hands, faces and feet. Copies from molds will be
cast in stone. Materials are included.

Panel Discussion in conjunction with the
Requesting Miracles Exhibition The educational panel, led by Kristin Congdon, Natalia
Marques da Silva, Mariolina Rizzi Salvatori,
and Claudia Schippert, will discuss the crosscultural significance of votive offerings in the
exhibition as well as in their original context.
Attendees are encouraged to participate in the
discussion, which begins at 7:00 p.m.
Mixed Media Portrait Workshop – Acrylic &
Pastel with Helen Hickey. Students may work
in pastel or acrylic and pastel. There will be a
live model available for the class but for those
who prefer it, there will also be a still life set up.
Explore your creativity and find new freedom
mixing it up with acrylics and pastels.
April 24 & 25 – May 1 & 2
Visiting Artist Workshop with Bob Lerner:
The Art of Seeing. This informal workshop is
designed for intermediate to advanced amateurs.
Through lecture, demonstration, and critiques,
students will gain an appreciation for detail and
a study of emotional responses to art. Bob Lerner is a former staff photographer for LOOK
Magazine whose work has been featured in many
galleries and museum exhibitions.
April 10
The Hannibal Square Folk Art Festival is a
celebration of community featuring Florida folk
artists and their work, a hands-on “Kid Folk”
art program, soul food, jazz music and offerings
from Crealdé business and community partners.

Workshop: Digital Printing for Shows with
Jon Manchester. This workshop is for those
who will be entering a show with Digital Photography. Jon will show how to make a professional quality print ready to be matted and
framed. Students may bring in up to two image
files to print. Jon Manchester is an instructor of
PhotoShop and Digital Imaging at Crealdé.
May 21–22
Into the Light: The Figure in Pastel with
Paul McNear. Learn how to capture and apply
the influence of light on the figure with pastel.
Along with essential elements of strong composition, students work from nude and costumed
models. Optical mixing of layered shading and
analysis of the effects of light and substructure
of values and temperature will be stressed.
June 5 & 6
Weekend Workshop with Vince Sansone:
Throwing Body Parts. Use the potter’s wheel
to make the forms for an animal and assemble
it using handbuilding techniques. Firing and
finishing techniques included; please see crealde.
org for photos of animals in progress.
Summer
May 8–16
Photographic Tour of Switzerland with
Peter Schreyer. Join Executive Director Peter
Schreyer, experienced photographer and guide,
on a tour of his picturesque homeland. On this
spring trip the group will travel to the Swiss Alpine region, the picturesque Lake District, and
beautiful cities and villages, including Berne,
Luzern, Interlaken, Montreux, and Gruyere.
Stay in deluxe hotels, eat delicious food, and
immerse yourself in a different culture!

Summer ArtCamp for children and teens.
Central Florida’s original ArtCamp features
one- and two-week sessions where children ages
5 through 17 can explore their creativity in
painting, drawing, ceramics, sculpture, and photography. High school students may participate
in week-long media-specific intensive studies in
photography, printmaking, ceramics, or drawing.
Visiting Artist Workshop with Kim Miller:
Large Clay Sculptures. Students create their
own handbuilt, low-fired large clay sculptures
with guidance from Central Florida artist Kim
Miller. Instruction includes engineering and
surface finishing techniques. Kim is well known
for her hand-built sculptural clay chairs, each
chair is an individual with its own imperfect
but constant persona. This workshop will be an
opportunity for students to develop and practice
freedom in their own sculpture construction.

Showalter Hughes Community Gallery—Storytellers XIII. Crealdé’s Storytellers
is an 8-week youth outreach program which
encourages young people to explore themselves,
their communities, and their lives through
photography. This first digital segment features
the photography and writing of 12 participants.

Weekend Workshop with Terry Trambauer
Norris: Painting the Still Life. For intermediate students: take a painting in oil or acrylic
from initial conception to completion in three
days. Painting techniques, including underpainting and glazing, will be demonstrated, along
with discussion of composition and concept.
