Showalter Hughes Community Gallery. Since
1982, Crealdé has presented an annual exhibition
featuring works of art from each of the Summer
ArtCamp participants, including painting, drawing,

The Art of Fellowship in Painting & Drawing
– Showalter Hughes Community Gallery.
Emerging artists from Crealdé’s Painting & Drawing
program share their talent and diverse techniques
in work produced during their Fellowships. Since
1978, the Crealdé Fellowship Program has mentored
hundreds of students through this work-study
exchange, with many becoming professional exhibiting
artists. Curated by Barbara Tiffany, Director, Painting
& Drawing. The reception is 6-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25.
“Out of the Box” quilt by Edna J. Patterson-Petty
September 11 – December 30
The Sum of Many Parts: Quiltmakers in
Contemporary America – Jenkins Gallery
and Heritage Center. Crealdé will be one of the
first domestic hosts for this internationally traveled
exhibition by leading quilt artists from across the
United States. Artists include traditional Native
American quilter Bonnie LeBeau, from South Dakota;
Dottie Moore of North Carolina; Erick Wolfmeyer
of Iowa; and Louisiana Bendolph from Alabama,
following the 19th-century tradition of Gee’s Bend
quilts. The exhibition is a program of Exhibits USA and
the National Endowment for the Arts. This two-venue
exhibition will also feature a display of locally created
quilts curated by folklorist Dr. Kristin Congdon.
Educational opportunities for adults and children
include visiting artist workshops, the inauguration of
Crealde’s state-of-the-art longarm quilting machine,
a resource library and film screenings. The reception
is 7-8:30 p.m. Friday, Sept.. 11, at the Jenkins Gallery,
followed by a continued reception with live music 8:3010 p.m. at Hannibal Square Heritage Center.

Jack-o’-Lanterns: A Holiday Tradition in Clay
Adult/Child Workshop with Doug Bringle.
Carve the clay pumpkins you create into jack-o’lanterns of your screams to delight you and your trick
or treaters for Halloweens to come. Directions are clear
so all can create these family heirlooms. For ages 5 and
up plus adult.

Travel the Back Roads to Historic Places
Along the Indian River Workshop with Peter
Schreyer. Explore architectural and cultural treasures
along the back roads of Volusia and Lake counties.
Participants cross the St. Johns River on a 19th-century
ferry and travel on a dirt road through the Ocala
National Forest. Photographic opportunities include
the natural and man-made landscape, local landmarks
and interiors of historical buildings. Includes
demonstrations, lunch and a follow-up review.

Barbara Young. Draw the human face and learn to
see the planes of the face and develop eye-and-hand

Raising the Bar: Painting the Florida
Landscape in Oils Workshop with Larry
Moore. This three-day workshop will focus on moving
your work to the next level. The instructor will show
how to capitalize on your strengths and work on your
weaknesses. Emphasis will be on drawing, color
and value, shape, form, edge and brushwork. Required
skill level is intermediate to advanced. Students will be
working from their own photos.

Workshop with Patricia Byron. Experience

re-creating a masterpiece on canvas. Whether it’s a

Painting Crystal and Flowers in Watercolor
Workshop with Susanna Spann. Based on
her book of the same title, this workshop teaches
skills necessary to paint these ethereal textures. The
internationally exhibited artist covers exercises in
value scales, compositional elements, color theory
and subject ideas.
Crealdé School of Art is a communitybased nonprofit art organization established
in 1975, featuring an affordable, sequential
curriculum of over 125 studio courses and
workshops for adults and children in painting,
drawing, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture,
digital and film photography, jewelry, stained
glass and fiber arts, with hands-on experience
emphasized. Crealdé also offers an awardwinning scholarship and outreach program
to special populations from the diverse
Central Florida community. Our two galleries
present changing multidisciplinary visual art
exhibitions by artists from Florida, the nation
and the world. The Contemporary Sculpture
Garden showcases over 60 outdoor pieces of art.
A limited number of classes are held at the Jessie
Brock Community Center in Winter Garden.

Winter
Through January 27
Visionary Bill Jenkins: Crealdé Founder,
Artist and Philanthropist — Jenkins Gallery
and Heritage Center. In celebration of Crealdé’s
40th anniversary, we remember late founder William
Sterling Jenkins (1909-1996) in a two-gallery
presentation. Trained as an artist in Europe and Mexico
in the 1930s, he produced a body of landscape and
portrait paintings influenced by the places he traveled
to as a young man, and the changing cultural landscape
of his native American South.
January 17
Fourth Annual A Night of Fire at Crealdé.
The school comes alive after dark with an evening of
hands-on workshops and demonstrations, including
a bronze pour, raku firing and a light-painting
photography display over the lake. Tour the studios
and galleries, and register for classes. Enjoy live music,
refreshments and storytelling around the fire. Food
from the grill provided by Millers Hardware. From 5-8
p.m. Saturday at the Crealdé main campus. Free.

Travel the Back Roads to Historic Places
Along the Indian River with Peter Schreyer.
Explore hidden architectural and cultural treasures
along the Indian River between Cape Canaveral and
Ponce Inlet. Participants will be able to photograph
historic small-town architecture, picturesque river
landscapes, fish camps, a late 19th-century homestead,
an ancient Indian Mound and the beautifully restored
lighthouse at Ponce Inlet. Demonstrations, lunch at
a local fish restaurant on the river, admission and a
follow-up review of the photographs are included.

From the Bronx to Florida: The Life
Sculptures of Rigoberto Torres — Jenkins
Gallery and Heritage Center. Puerto Ricanborn sculptor Rigoberto Torres worked in New York
City for two decades before moving to Kissimmee,
where he currently lives and works. Exhibited and
collected throughout the world, Torres’ colorful
life-size plaster and fiberglass figurative sculptures
are rooted in a celebration of daily life in the South
Bronx neighborhood where he grew up. His work,
described as “humanistic naturalism,” provides
“Ruth Fernandez” by Rigoberto Torres
sensitive studies of real people — family, friends and
strangers he has met during public castings. Curated
by David Cumbie. The two-gallery exhibition begins
with a reception 7-8:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6, in the
Jenkins Gallery and continues with Latin jazz 8:30-10
p.m. at Hannibal Square Heritage Center.

Mold Making Workshop with Artist-inResidence Rigoberto Torres. Work with
internationally known sculptor and Crealdé artist-inresidence Rigoberto Torres in a two-day workshop.
Visit the artist’s exhibition of life-size castings and then
join him in an intense study of his process. A variety
of mold making techniques will be explored in making
copies of the human face and the body.

Introduction to Repoussé Workshop with

sculpting copper. Become familiar with tools and
techniques while creating sculptures using the
repoussé technique, with demonstrations and handson assistance.

Workshop with Gregg Kreutz. The award-
winning painter and author of the classic artist’s
guide “Problem Solving for Oil Painters” focuses on
classical still life and portrait painting.

Sixth Annual Hannibal Square Heritage
Center Folk & Urban Art Festival. The festival
celebrates the works of more than 25 artists, including
members of the original Florida Highwaymen and
the B-Side Artists collective. A highlight will be
demonstrations of lifecasting by exhibiting artist
Rigoberto Torres of Richard Hall, Hannibal Square
hero and Tuskegee Airman. Featured music: the
Porchdogs Cajun and Zydeco Band and Orisi Risi
African Folklore. A “Kid-folk” workshop offers “The
Aztec Encounter and Musical Parade.” Food trucks.

Nature at the Joe Overstreet Landing
Workshop with Milton Heiberg. Spend a full
day with the author of seven books on photographic
technique and aesthetics. Visit some of Florida’s most
beautiful rural and untouched wild areas – from cattle
country to bird refuges, including snail kites and a
working bald eagle nest. Lunch is on Crealdé at nearby
Yeehaw Junction.

Storytellers Revisited: Geneva and Parramore
– Showalter Hughes Community Gallery.
Crealdé created the Storytellers program in 1996 to
bring dignity to underserved communities though the
documentary photography of the teens who live there.
They learn from professional photographers how to
capture images and develop them, as well as to write
an accompanying text. The finished Storytellers XV:
Parramore and Storytellers XVI: Geneva projects led by
photography instructor Sherri Bunye will be exhibited
together, juxtaposing city and rural living experiences
in Central Florida.
April 18 and 19
Digging Deep Decorative Techniques
Workshop with Robert Lawarre. Planning is
advised, but improvisation is a must when new and
captivating work is generated in clay. In this workshop
you are encouraged to foster the exploration of surface
decoration and its relationship to form. Though the
focus will be on vessels, they will be developed to
convey sculptural ideas. Using dark stoneware, forms
will be made by utilizing a variety of pinch, slab,
traditional and nontraditional methods. Open to all
levels, though handbuilding experience will be helpful.
April 19
Cold Connections and Riveting Workshop
with Stefan Alexandres. Cold connections and
riveting can be creatively applied to metalsmithing,
mixed media, found objects and jewelry. It’s an easy
way to marry different kinds of materials together, like
wood to metal or plastic, etc. No soldering or gluing
is required with this method. Tools, copper and brass
materials are included for the class.
April 24

Jon Manchester presents “How to Make Amazing
Monochromes.”
April 25
Lake to Lake Workshop with Peter Schreyer
and Sherri Bunye. A photographic walking
adventure will start with introductions and a site tour
of the new Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts.
In this five-hour workshop, participants explore the
changing skyline of downtown Orlando, from Lake
Lucerne to Lake Ivanhoe and photograph architecture,
street scenes and interiors. Workshop will culminate
with a dusk photography session in the historic Lake
Ivanhoe district.

Planters of Clay Adult/Child Workshop with
Doug Bringle. Plants for the house and porch help
make a house a home. Raise flourishing herbs, flowers
or greenery in a clay vessel that you make yourself.
Let your green thumb join the rest of your fingers in

cost of doing business and pricing services, along

learn how to use creative lighting and long-exposure
photography to create dramatic imagery. Pick one

Crealdé faculty leads a “Walking Photo Field Trip:
From Heritage Center to Casa Feliz in Winter Park.”

St. Augustine at 450 – Heritage Center. The
latest Crealdé Documentary Project was created during
a winter photography master class, which yielded
photographs and oral histories of America’s oldest city
during its anniversary year. The exhibition examines
the city’s past, its preservation efforts, and its place as a
tourist destination, college town and home to a diverse
population. Produced and curated by faculty members
Sherri Bunye and Peter Schreyer. The opening
reception is 7-9 p.m. Friday, June 19.
May 30
Figure Study: Female Form Workshop
with Sherri Bunye. The nude form has been
an endless source of inspiration for artists in all
disciplines. This workshop will focus on the feminine
shape. Working with live model(s), students will learn
the technical and creative skills necessary to make
artistic images using light and shadow on the female
form. Workshop will cover planning a shoot, models,
flattering poses and the use of studio lights. Saturday
lunch is included.

The 40th Anniversary Homecoming Exhibition
– Jenkins Gallery. Crealdé-inspired artists, now
living across the U.S., share selections of their current
work and the stories of how their artistic careers were
influenced through their educational experience at the
school. This exhibition is curated by Barbara Tiffany,
Director of Painting & Drawing. The opening on
Friday, June 5, coincides with the Annual Membership
Meeting, from 7-7:30 p.m., followed by a reception
until 9:30 p.m.
June 6 and 7
Outside the Box: Narrative Collage Workshop
with Marty Whipple. The first day of the workshop
will cover the basics of design with collage. The second
day, students will put together a piece using personal
and found items to tell a story. All skill levels welcome.

All About Color in Acrylic and Pastel
Workshop with Sally Evans. Focus on the bold
use of color that can only be achieved with acrylic
and pastel. Learn how to make paintings become
more dramatic and alive with color. In-depth use of

Crealdé Summer ArtCamp. Central Florida’s
original ArtCamp, first held in 1982, provides an
overview of the fundamentals of art-making as each
student learns from professional artists in real art
studios. Camps are offered for students ages 4 to 17,
who are placed in age-appropriate groups of up to 13
participants per class.

June 20
Imaginative Recycling with Plastics Workshop
with David Edgar. Making sculpture from recyclable
plastics is fun and results in unique environmentally
friendly artworks. Presented by internationally
recognized recycled plastics artist David Edgar, the
coauthor of Fantastic Recycled Plastic, the workshop
will include orientation to materials, equipment and
techniques as well as demonstrations of fundamentals
for both large and small assembly projects. Participants
will complete two or more pieces during the program.

Entertainment Photography Workshop with
Michael van Gelder. Learn insights into how
to gain access, as well as ethical issues, legal issues
and photographic issues of working musical and
entertainment events. Learn how to photograph
moving objects in low light so that the resulting
picture creates a unique mood and tells the story of the
event. No camera needed.

Metal Folding and Forging Workshop with
Stefan Alexandres. Crealdé supplies the forge,
