ASSESSMENT TASK
BOOKLET
YEAR 10
2016
9th February, 2016
Dear Parents/Caregivers of Year 10 Students,
Your son is now in his final year of Stage 5. As parents of Year 10 students it is vitally important from the
outset that you impress upon your son the importance of following a comprehensive and consistent
programme of study and work habits. To assist in the development of these skills an Assessment Schedule
for compulsory assessment tasks has been prepared for your son and yourselves. It is strongly
recommended that he place the relevant dates and tasks on a year planner in a prominent position which
enables you and your son to check his progress.
Please read the attached assessment section of the booklet carefully to familiarise yourself with the Board of
Studies and St. Dominic’s requirements regarding specific assessment tasks, weightings, and procedural
matters.
If you have any questions regarding assessment procedures, please do not hesitate to contact myself or the
relevant KLA Co-ordinator.
Schedule of Tasks
The Schedule of Assessment Tasks which follow is an indication to students of the week that the assessment
task may occur (a number of tasks have pre-determined dates). These dates must be adhered to. This
enables students to plan and co-ordinate the allocation and completion of assessment tasks. If the timing of
an assessment task needs to be changed every attempt will be made to give students’ 10 day’s prior notice.
A student who believes their personal assessment task schedule is inequitable must bring it to the attention
of myself prior to the initial assessment task for the year.
Best wishes for a successful 2016.
Yours sincerely,
Mr P Gorton,
Director of Curriculum

Assessment Task Schedule
Year 10 - 2016
ST DOMINIC’S REQUIREMENTS
All students complete Religious Studies as an Elective Course, whereby a Grade is presented on the boys’
Record of School Achievement.
PURPOSE OF ASSESSMENT
In school assessment provides the grades reported in the Record of School Achievement. It is a summative
measure of a student’s achievement based on:
•
a wider range of syllabus outcomes than is measured by the examination alone, although it may
cover all the objectives measured by an examination;
•
multiple measures and observations obtained throughout the course rather than at a single, final
examination.
Schools are responsible for awarding each student, for each course of study of grade (A,B,C, D or E) to
summarise the student’s achievement in courses completed in Stage 5. During the course of the year,
teachers collect information on achievements of each student. To allocate a grade to a student at the end
of the course, teachers make a judgement as to which grade descriptor best describes the achievement
of that student in the respective course. The internal assessment tasks act as a vehicle in determining a
student’s level of achievement.
STANDARDS REFERENCING
The Record of School Achievement and Higher School Certificate uses a standards referenced approach
to Assessment and Reporting.
What is a standards referenced approach?
In a standards referenced approach, the achievements of a student are assessed and reported against
the specified standards of performance that are established for each course. Once established, these
standards remain constant.
The benefits to students of a standards referenced approach to the Preliminary and HSC are:
•
•
•
•
the marks students gain in a subject are aligned with descriptions of what they know, understand
and can do
marks reflect the standards actually achieved by students rather than just indicating a position in a
pre-determined distribution
there are meaningful reports with clear descriptions of the different standards of performance
students who meet or exceed the minimal standard of performance expected will receive a mark of
50 or more.
What are standards?
In the Record of School Achievement the term standards refers to
•
•
the knowledge, skills and understanding expected to be learnt by students as a result of studying a
course – the syllabus standards
the level of achievement of the knowledge, skills and understanding – the performance standards.
Both syllabus standards and performance standards are based on the aims, objectives, outcomes and
content of the course. Together they specify what is to be learnt and how well it is to be achieved.
4
Assessment Task Schedule
Year 10 - 2016
Syllabus standards specify what students are expected to know and be able to do as a result of studying
a course. Teacher understanding of syllabus standards comes from the consideration of the aims,
objectives, outcomes and content of the syllabus.
Performance standards are the different levels of achievement in a course. These different levels of
achievement demonstrated by students are summarised in performance descriptions in the bands on
performance scale.
ST DOMINIC’S COLLEGE
RECORD OF SCHOOL ACHEIVEMENT ASSESSMENT POLICY
PURPOSE
St. Dominic’s Assessment Policy has been drawn up following guidelines of the Board of Studies and is
based on the principles of justice and equity.
St. Dominic’s College is committed to:

encouraging the spiritual, moral and intellectual growth of the individual.

recognising and valuing the uniqueness of each individual

providing the environment within which students have the opportunity to become self-motivated and
independent learners.
Assessment is intended to provide an indication of a student’s achievement, which is based on:

a wide range of syllabus outcomes

measures and observations obtained throughout the course, rather than at a single
examination

performance relative to standards.
Tasks will relate to specific syllabus outcomes, will cover a wide range of relevant outcomes. The students’
attitudes and values will not be considered in determining levels of achievement for the purpose of
awarding grades or marks in any subject.
GENERAL RULES & PRINCIPLES FOR ASSESSMENT
1. Assessment Program
The assessment program for each course offered by the school for the Record of School Achievement is
determined by teachers in accordance with the requirements stated in syllabus and assessment
documents issued by the Board of Studies.
Students will be informed in writing of the assessment requirements for each course. This written advice
will include:
•
the components and their weightings for each course as specified in the Assessment Guide in the
relevant Subject Manual;
•
the nature of each assessment task (e.g. assignment, test, project etc.);
•
an indication of when the various assessment tasks will take place. In addition, students will be
given at least two weeks’ notice of the task:
5
Assessment Task Schedule
Year 10 - 2016
•
the mark value of each task in relation to the total number of marks for the course;
•
relevant details of each task (e.g. topic being assessed), via an Assessment Task Notification at
least two weeks before the task is due.
A minimum of two weeks’ notice will be given of the exact date of each task or any amendments to
previously set dates.
If the integrity of a task is compromised for any reason, the KLA Co-ordinator in consultation with the
Director of Curriculum, Mr Gorton will assess the need for any alternate actions to be taken.
2. Reporting
The reporting of student progress for each assessment task should include for each student:
•
the mark;
•
an indication of his progress relative to other students in that course.
The privacy of the student will be respected.
3. Assessment Submissions – student responsibilities
a.
All tasks are issued using the College template whereby specific submission details are
included.
b.
Each assessment task has a receipt which all students are encouraged to have their teachers
complete and return to them as evidence that the task had been successfully submitted. Any
Illness/Misadventure form or appeal of any description will require such evidence to proceed.
c.
In the event of electronic submission all students are encouraged to request an electronic dated
reply indicating the task has been successfully submitted.
4. Illness/Misadventure
The Illness/Misadventure procedure is the direct responsibility of the student (or Parent/Caregiver if the
student is unable to complete the required actions stated below). Once the form has been completed by
the student, Parent/Caregiver, Teacher and the KLA Co-ordinator it is the Director of Curriculum who
makes the final decision on behalf of the Principal and the College. This decision is communicated to all
relevant parties and actions recorded.
a.
Illness/Misadventure before a task:
(i)
If a student is unable to attend school as a result of illness or misadventure for a significant
period before a task: the school must be notified as soon as possible before the task. An
Illness/Misadventure form must be completed and submitted with a Doctor’s Certificate (or
other formal documentation) attached, to the KLA Co-ordinator. A Doctor’s Certificate must
state in specific terms why the student has been unfit to work on the task during that time.
In these circumstances, a variety of alternative solutions may be considered at the
discretion of the KLA Co-ordinator in consultation with Director of Curriculum, Mr Gorton.
These may include:


an extension of time may be granted
the result will be compared to future performances and a moderated grade given
In the case of examinations the sitting for a task will not extend beyond a week from the
original date of the original task.
In exceptional circumstances an estimate may be given at the discretion of the KLA Coordinator in consultation with the Director of Curriculum, Mr Gorton.
6
Assessment Task Schedule
Year 10 - 2016
(ii)
If a student is knowingly unable to attend school on the day of an in-school task as a
result of misadventure, the KLA Co-ordinator must be notified before the date of the
task, whereby alternative arrangements are made for the task to be sat or submitted.
A completed Illness/Misadventure form with formal documentation stating in specific terms
why the student was unavoidably unavailable to complete the task on the due date.
Common Misadventure approvals include College Representation and Work Placement.
Common Misadventure rejections include Holidays, Casual Work and Doctors’
Appointments.
b.
Illness/Misadventure on the day of a task:
(i)
If a student is unable to attend school on the day of an in-school task (i.e Test) as a result of
illness or misadventure, the KLA Co-ordinator must be notified by 8.00 a.m. Details of the
student’s name, Year, task to be completed, and the name of the teacher involved, must be
given to the receptionist of the College.
A completed Illness/Misadventure form (as seen in Appendix A) with a Doctor’s Certificate (or
other formal documentation) attached, must be submitted to the KLA Co-ordinator, on the first
day of the student’s return to school. The Doctor’s Certificate must state in specific terms why
the student was unfit to perform the task. The task must be completed on the first day of return
(unless the KLA Co-ordinator has the authorisation of the Director of Curriculum for an alternate
date to be set).
(ii) If a student is unable to attend school on the day of a hand-in task (i.e Assignments) as a result
of illness or misadventure, the KLA Co-ordinator must be notified by 8.00 a.m. Details of the
student’s name, Year, task and teacher, should be given. All attempts should be made to have
the task delivered to school before 3.00 p.m. on the due day.
An Illness/Misadventure Form, completed and with a Doctor’s Certificate (or other formal
documentation) attached, must be submitted to the KLA Co-ordinator on the day of the student’s
return to school, along with the actual task submission.
The Doctor’s Certificate must state in specific terms why the student was unfit to perform the
task.
(iii) If a student who is eligible for Illness/Misadventure considerations chooses to attempt an ‘inschool’ task, an Illness/Misadventure Form with Doctor’s Certificate attached, should be
submitted to the KLA Co-ordinator within a day of the task.
The Doctor’s Certificate must be for the day of the task, and must state in specific terms why
the student would have not performed in a manner typical of other performances.
If, at the end of the Assessment program, the student’s results for the task in question are
considered to be significantly different from their normal results, a moderated estimate may be
awarded at the discretion of the KLA Co-ordinator in consultation with the Director of Curriculum.
It is generally advised that a student makes every attempt to sit for the task on that day.
c.
Misadventure applications for assessments which have used Information Technology will only
be considered if there is a printout of the response to indicate progressive completion. Tasks
completed on computer must be saved, backed up, and printed progressively.
The incompatibility of school and home software/hardware is not an adequate excuse for
misadventure.
d.
Illness/Misadventure forms – Additional Details
7
Assessment Task Schedule
Year 10 - 2016
5.
•
Illness/misadventure forms are available from Year Co-ordinator and Director of
Teaching and Learning. An Illness/Misadventure form can be no later than a week
after the date of the original task.
•
A Doctor’s Certificate signed by a member of the student’s immediate family is not
acceptable.
•
If the KLA Co-ordinator and the Director of Curriculum, Mr Gorton decide that there is
no valid reason for non-completion of an assessment task, a zero mark will be
recorded for that task.
Penalty
No allowance will be made for a student who is not present for a particular task or does not submit a task
on the due date/time except in the case where an Illness/Misadventure application has been approved by
the KLA Co-ordinator and Director of Curriculum, Mr Gorton (a doctor’s certificate is required).
If a task is not submitted and correct procedures have not been followed, ZERO marks will be
awarded. The student and parent/s will be notified in writing if penalties have been imposed.
Failure to notify the KLA Co-ordinator of absence by 8.00 a.m. on the day of the task will result in a ZERO
mark being awarded.
Failure to notify the KLA Co-ordinator in advance (as per Illness/Misadventure procedures stated) if
a student knows he will be unable to present for a task or to complete it will result in a ZERO mark being
awarded.
A ZERO mark will be awarded if work submitted for assessment is not an original work. Students have
completed the “All My Own Work” Board of Studies program which is compulsory (no student can complete
their HSC without successfully completing this program) and reminds students of regulations stipulated,
especially with respect to plagiarism and the ‘sharing’ of work. All students found to have breached ‘All
My Own Work’ guidelines will be given a ZERO mark for the relevant sections.
A ZERO mark will be awarded if documentation submitted is proven to be false or altered in any way.
6.
Non-Completion of a Course: ‘N Warnings and N Determinations’
If a student is found not to have met the RoSA Course completion criteria (stated above) they will be issued
an N warning. An N Warning clearly states the following:



The number of warnings issued for this course,
How many warnings have been issued relevant to the individual breach,
What has been done previously to assist the student and new due dates in which the matter/s must
be resolved by.
Common reasons for N Warnings to be issued, include:
•
•
•
•
•
•
Failure to remain up-to-date with class and homework
Failure to complete tasks
Failure to attend class
Failure to behave in class
Failure to make a serious attempt in assessment tasks
Malpractice
Students and parents will be informed of an N Warning via an N Warning letter (as shown in Appendix B).
One copy of an N Warning letter will be mailed home to the parents and one copy will be given to the
student directly by the KLA Co-ordinator or teacher. The Warning Letters are designed to support the
student in rectifying issues of concern. At the completion of the course, any student with outstanding N
Warning issues and/or sufficient evidence showing ongoing failure to meet mandatory course
8
Assessment Task Schedule
Year 10 - 2016
requirements will be N determined by the College. An N Determination will ensure a student is deemed
to have non-completion of the course and will not receive a grade. The student will be informed of the
appeals process outlined by the Board of Studies, if this eventuates.
Students are required to make a genuine attempt at assessment tasks, which contribute in excess of 50
per cent of the available marks in a course.
For students enrolled in VET courses, there is also a mandatory requirement to complete 35 hours of work
placement per 120 hours of course work.
A student’s failure to complete any RoSA Course, may jeopardise their attainment of a RoSA Certificate
and consequently a Higher School Certificate.
7.
Malpractice
Malpractice in assessment tasks may involve:
•
communicating with any person other than a supervisor, or receiving communication
during an in-class assessment task;
•
behaving in any way likely to disturb the work of any other student during an in-class
assessment task;
•
behaving in a way likely to upset the conduct of the assessment task;
•
communicating or receiving communication regarding the content of an in-class
assessment task before all the classes complete the task involved;
•
passing notes during an in-class assessment task;
•
possessing unauthorised material during an in-class assessment task;
•
submitting any work that is not the student’s own work;
•
plagiarism;
•
gaining an unfair advantage over other students in terms of extra time. This includes missing a
lesson before a task or the handing in of a task without valid reason for its being late.
Students who are reported to the KLA Co-ordinator or the Director of Curriculum, Mr Gorton in
relation to any of the above, and found guilty of malpractice, will be heavily penalised in
accordance with procedures above.
8.
Review of Individual Assessment results
The procedures to be employed for an Assessment Review will be based on the following principles:
•
An appeal on marks allocated to a particular assessment task must be made to the KLA Coordinator within two days of receipt of the marked task. This will then be discussed with the
relevant subject teacher and the Director of Curriculum, Mr Gorton.
•
The decision of the Co-ordinator and the Director of Curriculum, Mr Gorton on the marks allocated
will be final.
•
Should the occasion arise of a task being found not to discriminate between students, to be invalid,
or to have been affected by problems associated with administration, the school reserves the right
to add an additional task (with sufficient notice) and to adjust weighting accordingly. Such a
procedure will only be put in place after consultation between the relevant KLA Co-ordinator and the
Director of Curriculum, Mr Gorton. Students will be notified promptly of any such adjustments.

APPENDIX B
OFFICIAL WARNING LETTER
Non-Completion of RoSA
Dear Parents,
The purpose of this letter is to warn you that STUDENT NAME of Homeroom is in danger of not meeting
the Course Completion Criteria for the RoSA:
The Board of Studies requires schools to issue students with official warnings in order to give them the
opportunity to redeem themselves. Please regard this letter as the official warning we have issued
concerning xxxxxx.
A minimum of two course-specific warnings must be issued prior to a final ‘N’ determination being made
for a course.
.
Course Completion Criteria
The satisfactory completion of a course requires Principals to have sufficient evidence that the student
has:
a) followed the course developed or endorsed by the Board; and
b) applied themselves with diligence and sustained effort to the set tasks and experiences provided in
the course by the school; and
c) achieved some or all of the course outcomes.
Where it is determined that a student has not met the Course Completion Criteria, they place
themselves at risk of receiving an ‘N’ (non-completion of course) determination. An ‘N’ determination
will mean that the course will not be listed on the student’s Record of Achievement. In Year 11, students
must make a genuine attempt at assessment tasks that contribute in excess of 50% of available marks.
Completion of tasks worth exactly 50% is not sufficient; tasks worth in excess of 50% must be completed.
To date, STUDENT NAME has not satisfactorily met of the Course Completion Criteria.
In the case of competency-based courses, it is a matter for the Principal to determine whether the attempts made by
the student to complete the course are genuine.
Where students are studying for a course that includes a requisite examination, students must sit for and make a
genuine attempt at such examinations.
Whilst the Board of Studies does not determine minimum attendance requirements, Principals may determine that, as a result
of absence, the course completion criteria, as detailed under Section A, have not been met. All such warnings must relate the
absences to specific unsatisfactory completion of course requirements.
The following list notifies you of those tasks, requirements or outcomes not yet completed and/or for
which STUDENT NAME has not made a genuine attempt. In order for him to satisfy course
requirements the following tasks, requirements or outcomes need to be satisfactorily completed:
