Road and Camino Pablo. Look for runners in the Campolindo neighborhood. The

and provide a safe environment the morning of the race. For detailed route

Summer Job
Opportunities Available
Creek and Stormwater
Maintenance
The Parks & Recreation Department is
currently recruiting part-time employees.
Positions include Recreation Leader I,
Recreation Leader II (Camp Director), and
Seasonal Maintenance Worker. Working
at Camp Hacienda, the Town-run summer
day camp, Recreation Leaders will lead
campers in songs, games, crafts, and more!
Working with the Public Works/Parks
Maintenance Department, Seasonal
Maintenance Workers will assist in the
daily maintenance of parks, facilities,
street medians, and other areas as needed.
Although a creek may channel water from
a large area, most creeks and other
drainage structures are privately owned,
and the Town does not maintain most of
the creeks and drains in the community.
Property owners are responsible for the
creek’s banks, bottom, and growth that run
through their property.
For more information including
applications, job descriptions, and
supplemental questions, please visit
moraga.ca.us.
Moraga Youth
Involvement Committee
Recruitment
Applications are now being accepted for
the 15–16 term of the Moraga Youth
Involvement Committee, MYIC, deadline
is August 7, 2015. The MYIC is a
committee comprised of students who
reside in Moraga who want to contribute to
their community and learn the civic
process. The MYIC acts as an advisory body
to the Town Council on youth related
issues, organizes youth/family events for
the Moraga Community and completes
philanthropic projects that change yearly.
For more information or to obtain an
application contact Kimberly Nelson at
(925) 888-7035 or [email protected].
The same goes for drainage structures;
both underground pipes and above ground
structures which carry water through or
around your property. These concrete
drainage swales are also known as “V”
ditches. The purpose of the ditch is to
intercept surface runoff on the slope to
reduce the amount of infiltration into the
slope. Property owners are also responsible
for the section of the drain that runs from
the culvert to the street. The Town does
not take responsibility of water until it
reaches the storm drain in the street.
For information regarding creek
maintenance and drainage structure
responsibilities, contact the Moraga Public
Works Department at (925) 888-7026.
For more information regarding what is
allowed when working in the creek,
or before beginning any
work in a waterway,
contact the California
Department of Fish and
Game at (707) 944-5500.

The unstructured routine of summer can
keep you moving all day, swim team, tennis
lessons, and play dates, etc. Then you need
something—your daughter’s swim team
colored beach towel. But where do you go
without fighting traffic and searching for
parking? Go to shopmoragafirst.com and
type in your item under “key words” and
search. There is a good possibility you will
have a couple of options in Moraga.
It is a new and local tool to help streamline
your shopping and eliminate wasted time.
The added bonus—all the tax dollars stay
here, repairing the roads, building a new
bridge to Canyon… in essence, enhancing
the quality of our lives. Locally owned
businesses care about their customers,
it’s their livelihood. While we can’t always
find what we are looking for locally,
checking Moraga
businesses first, dining
locally, buying gas
locally—those tax
dollars stay here
benefiting all of Moraga.
In 2012, the Moraga Police Department
(MPD) got involved with the Law
Enforcement Torch Run to benefit Special
Olympics Northern California (SONC).
The Torch Run is the single biggest
year-round fundraising event for the SONC
and consists of an intrastate running relay
through thousands of communities,
conducted by about 3,000 police officers
at the Local, State and Federal level. In
addition to having police officers run in
the event in the past, the Moraga Police
Officers Association sponsors an annual
fundraiser in the summer to benefit the
Special Olympics Northern California. Last
year, Moraga Police partnered with the
New Rheem Theatre for a Kids Day event
which consisted of a matinee showing of a
family movie and a festival with carnival
games and fun activities. The event was
also supported by a generous donation
from the Kiwanis Club of Moraga Valley.
The annual fundraiser is again planned for
Summer of 2015 with the pledged support
of the Kiwanis Club. Please visit
moragapoa.com for details or call Sgt.
Brian South at (925) 888-7052. The MPD
is pleased to support Special Olympics
Northern California
and we appreciate
the support of
the community.

Moraga Women's
Society News
The Moraga Historical Society is
celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year!
Located at 1500 St. Mary’s Road, adjacent
to the Moraga Library, the History Center
is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday
from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. During the week
of April 27, 2015, all 3rd graders in the
Moraga School District will tour the
History Center and be given mini lessons
about Moraga from the prehistoric era to
incorporation. Not to be missed will be
100 year old Mary Ostrander telling her
tales of growing up on a ranch! In May the
Society is planning a Romeria (field trip)
to San Francisco’s Chinatown. The
Conference of California Historical
Societies will present their annual Awards
of Achievement to several deserving
Moraga Historical Society members in
June. Watch for the Society’s booth at the
4th of July celebrations and plan on
attending the annual dinner Wednesday,
August 5 at the Hacienda de las Flores.
Mark your calendars for the culminating
event of our 50th year with a luncheon
banquet on Saturday, October 10 at the
Saint Mary’s College Soda Center. For
more information call the History Center
at (925) 377-8734 or Susan Sperry at
(925) 376-3053.
In fulfillment of the Mission Statement of
the Moraga Women’s Society, “All money
raised… shall be used for the betterment of
the community…,” Joaquin Moraga
Intermediate School received a donation
dedicated to their Earth Stewardship class
taught by Dawn Lezak. This class is
designed as an interdisciplinary class
aligned with the Common Core standards.
Students participate in hands-on outdoor
activities connecting to 6th grade
curriculum presented in their classes.
Student teams spend time in the garden
working in the dirt on specific garden
projects, conducting experiments, learning
about sustainable systems, climate zones,
erosion, insects, solar energy, composting,
and much more. Therefore at the April 20
Moraga Women’s Society meeting
Ms. Lezak will provide the membership a
tour of the garden, meeting her students
and explaining her curriculum. Guests are
welcome. Please call Colleen Lund at
(925) 376-3520 for more information.

social activities for its members.

Lamorinda CERT
Do you have emergency kits for your
home and car? Household accidents as well
as natural disasters can happen at any
time and often without warning. Having
the necessary supplies in handy kits at
home and in your car will make a
difference in how you manage the
emergency.
Lamorinda CERT (Community
Emergency Response Team) class
registration is currently open. Upcoming
classes will be held this Spring in Moraga
on Wednesday nights, April 8–May 20,
and Fall in Orinda on Thursday nights,
September 9–October 22. The course of
six classes followed by a drill allows
participants to practice basic emergency
preparedness and first aid skills. Classes
are open to residents and employees of the
Lamorinda area, and are free of cost,
however we do ask for a commitment
to attend all classes. Registration for
upcoming sessions can
easily be done online
at lamorindacert.org
Make your emergency
kits and be prepared!
Join the Moraga Movers
The Moraga Movers, one of the largest social groups in town with over 400 members, offers

ages 55 plus, activities also include bridge, book club, classic movies, and more. Frequent
excursions are arranged to places of interest throughout the Bay Area. Dinners are the
second Monday of the month at the Saint Mary’s College Soda Center where friends old and
new can socialize and enjoy engaging and informative entertainment. For membership

Junior Rugbytots: This class has been
developed to start encouraging children to
use core skills like balance, agility and
coordination. We use multi-coloured foam
balls and cones to ensure the children’s
safety at all times. The 30-minute parent
participation session includes passing,
catching, try scoring, cone kicking, and
games involving giant rugby balls.
Senior Rugbytots: This class has been
developed to build on the basic motor skills
learned and to start looking at the more
specific skills used in Rugby. We have
specifically designed games and tasks to
teach children to find space, pass the rugby
ball backwards, score a “well worked” try
and much more. We use midi size rugby
balls for this class so the children can get
used to the weight and feel of a proper ball.
Advanced Rugbytots: This class has been
developed with the same “fun first”
approach that is present throughout the
whole program. We are able to utilize the
valuable knowledge and experience of our
current coaches, some of whom have played
at the highest level, to produce a program
capable of further developing children who
have enjoyed their time at Rugbytots or for
