Tamayouz Excellence Award – Annual Report 2012
The Tamayouz Excellence award began in 2012, in its first year the award had only one category: “Excellence in Graduation Projects.” Final year architectural
students studying at universities in Iraq submitted entries. A judging panel consisting of internationally renowned architects and academics, including the Priktzer
Architecture Prize winner Dame Zaha Hadid, DBE, assessed all entries and chose a winner.
Tamayouz is an independent initiative with no political affiliation, which aims to advance the profession of architecture in Iraq both academically and professionally.
Tamayouz drives the evolution of design excellence in Iraq and thus provides a healthy competitive environment for students and architects in Iraq.
Over the last year, Tamayouz Excellence Award has grown from a local award to an internationally recognized award judged by a renowned International Judging
Panel, such as: Dame Zaha Hadid; the founder of Zaha Hadid Architects, Angela Brady; president of the Royal Institute of British Architects, Professor Paul Ivey;
Dean of Engineering and Computing Faculty in Coventry University, Katherine McNeil; Director of Architecture For Humanity - London Chapter, Moira Lascelles; of
The Architecture Foundation in London, Dr Khaled Al-Sultany a renowned Iraqi architect and academic from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Denmark and Ayad
Al-Tuhafi the owner of London based Ayad Al-Tuhafi Architects.
The organizations that sponsor and support the award, such as; Zaha Hadid Architects, Al-Dulaimi Business Group, The United Nations Global Compact,
Coventry University, The Iraqi Business Council in Jordan, Dewan Architects and Engineers, Ayad Al-Tuhafi Architects – London and Architecture for Humanity
have shown support to corporate social responsibility principles and the voluntary efforts of the award team highlight an important stepping stone in volunteer work
in Iraq.
This year, Tamayouz Excellence Award have established two new categories; the first new category is the Women in Architecture and Construction award and the
second is Design Excellence – UK; where for the first time Iraqi Academics judge a UK academic award.

In 2013, a number of changes took place, other representatives have now joined the award:
“I am delighted to be a judge of the Tamayouz Award. Iraq’s rich history
and its future possibilities inspire a great sense of optimism for its
architects. There is a new, invigorated ethos of worldwide collaboration
within architecture; a truly collective research culture where many
contributions and innovations feed into each other. Talents flourish in this
global movement and the Tamayouz Award further links Iraq’s architects
with this international community”.
Dame Zaha Hadid, DBE
“I am delighted to join the judging panel for Iraq’s first design excellence
award for architecture graduates; in its first year graduates have
demonstrated the highest standards of creativity, enthusiasm, and
determination to succeed and match the abilities of students elsewhere.
I warmly welcome all Universities participating in this competition to the
educational ‘family’ we are creating and ask them to do all they can to
support future generations of Iraqi architects”.
Professor Paul Ivey – Coventry University
“I was delighted to be involved in the very first Tamayouz Award. It was
interesting to review the varied schemes submitted by Iraqi students – I
am always keen to see where the next generation are drawing their
inspirations from”.
Moira Lascelles – The Architecture Foundation London
“We in the Arab world need more initiatives like the Tamayouz Award to
promote innovation, excellence and awareness in the building
environment in the region that has had its fair share of challenges over
the past few years and still does”.
Rashid Al-Nasa’a
"Architecture for Humanity is delighted to be part of this new initiative for
Iraq, a joining of people, place and culture through architecture. The
students' projects demonstrate a real passion for a positive future”.
Architecture For Humanity – London Chapter
“Tamayouz Excellence Award is important because it is independent and
founded by pure Iraqi efforts to recognize young Iraqi talents and help
them at the start of their careers”.
Abdul Aleem Albanaa - Al-Mwatin News, Iraq
“Overall, we have been enormously impressed by the standard of the
competition entries. This will have a huge, positive impact in raising
awareness of the great quality and style of middle-eastern architecture”.
Paul Longdin – Constructure
“The relation between architecture and the political system: politics does
not build architecture, architecture builds the political system and that is
Tamayouz Award's logic”.
Mohammed Aref - Alittihad newspaper, UAE
"Tamayouz is the country's first architecture prize since 9 years "
Building Design Online
The main lesson I feel we in the UK could learn would be the collaboration
processes between multiple sectors to gain recognition for excellence. Could
we create more opportunities like this one within the UK
