ARRIVE NAPLES – SORRENTO
Arrival in the afternoon and then travel along the
Costa Sorrentina to our hotel. Once checked in
there will be time to relax before dinner. (D)
Day 3
Wednesday, April 24
sORRENTO
Time to enjoy the charming town of Sorrento,
perched atop cliffs of one of the most scenic
stretches of coast. We’ll also wind our way
along the famous Amalfi Coast by local bus to
Ravello and visit the spectacularly-situated Villa
Cimbrone and its gardens. (B,D)
Day 5Friday, April 26
SORRENTO
villa cimbrone
Cited in 11th century documents as
occupying headland of a vast estate
called Cimbronium, the villa derives its
name and atmosphere from a lineage
as venerable as that of Ravello itself.
The Villa and its beautiful six hectare
park, which have been compared to the
“Gardens of Armida amongst the roses
and the hydrangeas”, have been a source
of inspiration for many leading artists and
romantics.
The Villa Cimbrone estate is universally
recognized as one of the most
important landscape and horticultural
achievements of the late 19th and early
20th century English Romantic culture
in the Mediterranean region, along with
the Hanbury Botanical Gardens and La
Mortella on Ischia.
Visitors are continually enraptured by the
unspoiled regal beauty of Ravello and the
villa that is perhaps it crown jewel.

sORRENTO
1
The Place of the Myrtles was created from
a disused quarry overlooking the Bay of
Forio by architect Russell Page in 1956
for English composer William Walton
and his wife Susana. The garden is laid
out in sections defined by the topography,
(as is another converted quarry, Butchart
Gardens). Paths and stairs winding about
the steep slopes keep an intimate feel to
the garden, though it is also accessible to
wheelchairs for all to enjoy the flora and
spectacular hillside setting.
We return to Naples and continue by ferry to the
Island of Ischia, where we will visit the Gardens
of La Mortella. We have a chance to enjoy this
unique island with its hot springs, narrow roads
and wonderful views of the Gulf of Naples before
returning to home base. (B,D)
Today we visit the great excavation site of
Pompeii, a city preserved as it was in 79 AD when
the eruption of Mt. Vesuvio sealed it in ash. We’ll
enjoy the gardens of the city before traveling to
Naples for a visit to the Botanical Gardens. (B,D)
The gardens of Pompeii
Pompeii had been a Greek, then Samnite
city before being colonized by the
Romans in 80 BCE, thus many of the
elements remaining pre-date even the
Roman conquest. Its encapsulation in the
eruption of Vesuvius is one of the history’s
best-known disasters and, paradoxically,
greatest treasures. The atrium and Peristyle
courts feel surprisingly contemporary and
livable as you marvel at the frescoes and
mosaics of its richly ornamented villas.
Day 6
Saturday, April 27
SORRENTO – caserta – MONTE caSSInO
FRASCATI
We tour the Gardens of the Palazzo Reale
La Reggia di Caserta, then proceed to the
breathtaking Abbey of Monte Cassino, perched
above the Liri Valley, and end the day in the hills
south of Rome. (B,D)
Starting from the wine-growing region of Frascati,
we will visit the gardens of Ninfa and the papal
estate of Castel Gandolfo, famed for its beautiful
landscaping and gardens. (B,D)
Day 8
Monday, April 29
FRASCATI
We have a morning visit to the fascinating
catacombs along Rome’s Via Appia Antica, then
head into the eastern hills to Tivoli, a spa town
for the ancient Romans. After wandering the
gardens and fountains of Tivoli’s Villa d’Este and
Hadrian’s Villa, we’ll enjoy a local dinner before
returning to our home base. (B,D)
GArdens of Ninfa
We have a unique opportunity to
visit the romantic, flower-encrusted
ruins at Ninfa, only open by special
arrangement.
Sacked
during
the
Middle Ages, the town and castle were
abandoned to slumber like Sleeping
Beauty, until transformed into a botanical
garden in the 20th century by descendants
of the Caetani family. The lush, damp
location permits an unusual and rich
mixture of vegetation. Scented curtains
of rose, hydrangea and jasmine adorn the
remains of medieval houses and frescoed
churches, and blossoms entwine soaring
cypresses lining ancient Roman streets.
Paths now meander beside a crystal-clear
river through Ninfa’s tranquil setting in
Lazio, south of Rome.
Our half-day panoramic city tour of Rome will
encompass the main sights and then we’ll enjoy
a walking tour of the historic centre around the
Piazza Navona and Pantheon, with time at leisure
to explore the local treasures on your own, or do
as the Romans do and enjoy the ambiance of the
Via Veneto or Spanish Steps. (B,D)

FRASCATI
FRASCATI – Viterbo – MONTECATINI/
TUSCANY
We venture north to visit the charming hilltop
town of Viterbo and the nearby Villa Lante. Then
we continue to Montecatini, check in and have
dinner. (B,D).
villa lante
Possibly the finest example of the best
period for garden design: the Mannerist
phase of the Italian Renaissance.
Designed for Cardinal Gambera with
a taste for outdoor living, it represents
Ovid’s tale of humanity’s descent from the
Golden Age. Water cascades from a grotto
surmounting the hill through fountains,
water parterres, and a Water Chain that is
the best and earliest example of a stepped
cascade. Every aspect of the garden is
perfectly proportioned and exquisitely
detailed, incorporating the structures
of the Villa as garden ornaments. The
overall design is attributed to Vignola,
with influences from some of the finest
existing examples of landscaping evident.
The geometry, employing the Palladian
circle and square, was inspired by the
Belvedere at the Vatican; the use of water
by the Villa d’Este; the island evokes
Hadrian’s marine theatre at Tivoli and
the Isolette at the Boboli and the hillside
terraces echo Hatshepsut’s Temple.

Day 7
Famed for its water gardens, the green,
romantically overgrown terraces sparkle
with spray and resonate with cascading
water. The 16th century gardens are
punctuated with tall pines, oaks and slim
cedars.
Thursday, May 2
MONTECATINI/TUSCANY
Today we visit Florence, have a brief introductory
tour of the Duomo, Piazza Signoria and Ponte
Vecchio and then visit the Boboli Gardens. We’ll
also have time to enjoy the local market before
returning to Montecatini. (B,D)

The Royal Palace of Caserta, like the
Palace of Versailles to which it is often
compared, is a UNESCO World Heritage
site constructed in the elaborate style of
the times to be the seat for its Bourbon
kings. Designed in the mid 18th century
by Neapolitan Luigi Vanvitelli and his
son Carlo, the 120 hectare park includes
a 78m cascade and several monumental
fountains, a sculpture series based on
Ovid’s Metamorphoses, an English
Garden and the lovely River Road, with
room to spare for idiosyncrasies like a silk
workshop disguised as a garden pavillion.
Described in its UNESCO nomination
as “the swan song of the spectacular art
of the Baroque”, it is the world’s largest
royal palace in volume, and bears the
greatest resemblance to its French model.

MONTECATINI – venice
Some of the earliest and best-known
formal Italian gardens reside behind
the Pitti Palace, seat of the Medici in
Florence. The mid-16th century garden
style developed here incorporates
elaborate stonework, statuary and
fountains with classical accents such as
grottos, nympheums, and temples. The
openness of the garden, with its broad
gravel avenues and expansive view of the
city, was unconventional for its time. The
11 acres of garden are a treasury of some
of the greatest art and architectural talents
of the day, with contributions from the
likes of Ammanati, Vasari, Buontalenti,
Giambologna and Michelangelo. They
comprise an outdoor museum of sculpture
which includes Roman antiquities as well
as 16th and 17th century works.
Crossing the Apennine Mountains, we’ll stop
to visit one of the spectacular Venetian Villas
along the Brenta River near Venice, an area
famously studded with architectural gems. We’ll
then proceed to our hotel at Abano Terme, near
Padova. (B,D)
Day 15
Monday, May 6
venice
We’ll start our exploration of the famous floating
city with a brief introductory tour, then there is
time at leisure for sightseeing and shopping.
Perhaps take a boat to one of the islands like
Murano, pay homage to Hemingway over a coffee
at Harry’s bar, contemplate Byron as you glide
beneath the Bridge of Sighs in a serene gondola,
or lose yourself for a while in the gorgeous watermirrored alleys and squares for the quintessential
Venetian experience. (B,D)

MONTECATINI/TUSCANY

where you will arrive the same day. (B)

a local winery. (B,D)
villa Gamberaia
Long regarded one of the most sublime
Italian gardens, Gamberaia marries the
intricate decoration of the Mannerist
or Baroque garden with a simple early
Renaissance structure. Since being badly
damaged in WWII, the full complement
of long lawns, nymphaeum, fountains,
lemon garden and 19th century water
parterre have been restored.

Caren Heine
We are very pleased to have one of Canada’s premiere
floral artists joining our tour of Italy’s most glorious
gardens. Caren Heine has hosted numerous groups with
Special Travel International over the past two decades,
to destinations throughout Europe, with a special
focus on Art. She will accompany the group, paint
on location and demonstrate her painting technique.
Anyone interested is encouraged to take advantage of
this opportunity at any level; Caren is an experienced
and accessible teacher, able to offer valuable insights
to both the beginner sketching and the seasoned artist.
Consider taking home some of your own original
sketches as souvenirs, or capturing your adventures in
a thoughtfully-crafted travel journal that you can revisit
and truly treasure for years to come! You’ll be amazed at
the richness of your experience when you take a moment
to observe as an artist, instead of seeing passively!
about the artist
Inspired by an artistic upbringing and the spectacular
natural beauty of British Columbia, Caren Heine
began showing as a professional artist at the age of
fourteen. Primarily painting botanical subjects in
watercolour, Caren is also known for the exquisite
architectural and animal subjects which she creates
in watercolour, acrylic, or pastel.
In 1979 the Federation of Canadian Artists elected her
to the status of A.F.C.A., the youngest at that time to
receive that honour. For the past three decades, Caren has been
enthusiastically received in solo and group shows across North
America, and with the Royal Society of Painters in Miniature
in London, England. She has also exhibited in touring shows
throughout Canada, the United States and Europe, sponsored by
the Government of British Columbia, The University of British
Columbia, the Federation of Canadian Artists, and the Canadian
Nature Federation.
Her versatility and honed aesthetic have led Caren to apply her
considerable skill to other artistic disciplines. She is a trained
Interior Decorator, experienced muralist and illustrator, who has
won three commissions from the Canadian Mint, two of which
were produced as the world’s purest gold coins.
Caren is much sought-after as a teacher for classes and workshops,
and the Painting Tours she has led with other members of her
artistic family since 1992 (you can see more of their work at
www.spindriftstudios.com and www.jheine.com.)
If you would like more information, or to see more of her work,
