was leaving to visit my mom
in California for a week, when
at the last minute, I decided to
pack some clay and sculpting tools on
the off-chance that I'd have some time
to work on a new head. The idea was
to sculpt another head which could
fit "Scarlett's" anns and legs. Each
evening I sculpted at my mom's
kitchen table and in the end ,
"Vanessa" was born.
Greenware Preparation
Cast "Vanessa's" head and shoul­
der plate in Bell's New Gold Marque
Azure White Porcelain Slip. Cast her
hands and feet in Gold Marque
French Glow. Clean the head and size
the eyes to accommodate 20mm pa­
perweight eyes. If using the Glastic
eyes, size for 20mm hazel. Be sure to
separate all fingers when cleaning the
hands. Fire to Cone 6.
Fire China Fire: Olleratl Wash
Mix 5-parts Dusty Rose Pink to 1­
part Flux using Water Based Painting
Medium or Water Based Lip Medium
to a creamy consistency. Apply the

Eyebrows.,Mix J umeau Brow with
Painting Medium to a creamy consis­
tency. Mark the brow bone with a red
pencil. The reason for this is to help
in uniform placement of each brow.
The red pencil fires off, and does not
effect the china paint. Using the
Master Brow, dip the tip of the brush
in Lip Additive then into the Jumeau
Brow. The Lip Additive works as an

excellent fine line medium. Pull brow
strokes until they ALMOST overlap
at the top. The strokes will have a
slight curve and slant toward the ear.
Add the "fliers" after the base strokes
are in place.

Lips~Using the wash mix, apply a
line of color to the center of the mouth
using the Lip Brush. Blend this color
with a 102 Mini Shader upward to the
shape of the top lip and downward to
form the bottom lip. Be sure to look
closely at Vanessa's photo for correct
lip shape. Be sure to pull the top lip
all the way to the outside corners and
slightly tilted upward.
Freckles~Mix 1-partJumeau Brow
and I-part Rosy Pink Cheek with
Painting Medium to a creamy consis­
tency. Using a toothpick, apply freck­
les to the bridge f the nose and the
upper cheek area. Pat these freckles
with your index finger. Your finger will
lift some of the paint and lay it down
in another area, thus causing the first
freckles to be lighter, and the other
freckles to lay down in a softer ran­
dom pattern. Try it, you'lt love it!
Shading,Using the Eye Shadow
mix and the 104 Shader, lightly shade
the nose flares, philtrum, chin crease,
ear creases, eye creases by the bridge
of the nose, and nose crease (the little
depression at the end of the nose).
Don't make the nose crease too dark.

Eyelashes~Mix I-part Jumeau
Brow to 1VI-parts Ebony Black with
Painting Medium to a creamy consis­
tency. Starting at the center of the
eyelid crease, and using your Pro Liner,
pull long curled lashes. These lashes
need to be UNEVEN in placement,
intensity, and length. Nter filling in
these lashes, pull some shorter ones
left of center, but not alt the way to
the tear duct. Line in the eyelid crease
with the lash mix.
Bottom Eyelashes,Using the lash
mix and the Pro Liner, start at the tear
duct and pull shorter curled lashes
which slant toward the ear. These
lashes are EVEN in placement, inten­
sity, and length. After the eyelashes,
top and bottom, are placed, pull 4
lashes from inside the top eyelid.
These lashes flow across the eyelid at
the outside corners of each eye. They
also fill in the gap left by pulling the
top lashes from the eyelid crease.
Shading-Apply additional shading
of Rosy Pink Cheek to the nose flares,
philtrum, ear creases, eye creases, nose
creases, and chin crease. Using the
China Feature, apply Rosy Pink Cheek
to the nostril and blend with a 102
Mini Shader.
Cheeks..Mix French Blush with
Painting Medium to a stiff consis­
tency. Using your index finger, apply
Painting Medium to the entire cheek
area including welt below the jawline,
across the chin, and across the bridge
of the nose. Blend with a lint free
cloth. Using the Blusher Brush, ap­
ply cheeks starting at the cheek bone
ar4ea, and lightly dusting across the
bridge of the nose and chin. The
cheeks are very blushed. Blush the
shoulder plate, arms, and legs at this
time, using French Blush. The nail
detail is done with a light coat of wash
color and Ivory half-moons and nail
tips.
Fire to Cone 018.
Eyebrows..Pult additional brow
hairs with the Master Brow brush to
add depth to the brow.
Lips.Mix Rosy Pink Cheek with
Painting Medium to a medium con­
sistency. Using the Lip Brush, apply
a line of color through the center of
the mouth. Blend the center of the
mouth using the 102 Mini Shader.
Make sure the darkest color is to the
center of the mouth. The center lip
shadow is intense but fades away be­
fore reaching the outer lip edge.
Lip Accent Lines.Using the Pro
Liner and the lip shading color apply
.. two fine delicate accent lines to the
top and bottom lips. These lines are
not placed directly on the lip edge, but
slightly below the top lip edge, and
slightly above the bottom lip edge.
Line the center of the mouth being
sure the comers tum upward.
Fourth China Fire: ElJeshadow,
Tea, Ducts, Lowe, Lash Shadow,
Eljebrouls, Elje Linin" Nose
Dots, Cheeks, Lips
Eyeshadow-Mix Contours with
Painting Medium to a medium con­
sistency. Using the 104 Shader, apply
the mixture over the previous
eyeshadow, keeping the heaviest color
on the eyelid and across the top lashes.
Tear Duct..Apply Rosy Pink Cheek
to the tear duct using the China Fea­
ture and blending with a 102 Mini
Shader.
Lower Lash Shadow..Using the
104 Shader, stipple Eye Shadow across
bottom lashes. This shading fades
away before reaching the tear duct.
The heaviest color remains over the
outside corner lashes.

Eyebrows#Add additional hairs to
the brow using Jumeau Brow.
Lining the Eyes #Using the Pro
Liner and the lash mix, line the in­
side edges of the eye opening, avoid­
ing the tear duct area.
No e Dots#Apply additional color
of Rosy Pink Cheek to the upper nos­
trils nd blend only half way down. The
nostril will remain darkest at the up­
per edge.
Cheeks#Lightly dust cheek bones
with French Blush. I use only the
paint that remains in the Blusher
Brush from the previous cheek appli­
cation, and no medium to the cheek
itself. This must be done using very
little pressure to the brush.
Lips #Mix Barely Pink with Lip
Medium to a medium consistency.
Using the Lip Brush, tip the brush into
Lip Additive. Blend the additive into
the paint mixture and apply a VERY
THIN even application to the entire
lip surface. Avoid puddling of the
paint in the crease between the lips.
The original shading of the lips must
be visible through this application.

plate was sculpted to accommodate a
lowered neckline costume and her
NEW body design was created by my
dear friend, Judy Kitchen. I've had a
lot of fun with "Vanessa". I know you
