Our lives are filled with
attachments to both people,
possessions and even ideas and
plans.
Normally we think of
attachments when it comes to
tangible belongings and people.
However we can also become
attached to our plans and ideas.
All of these whether they be
tangible or not are fragile in
nature and subject to change. In
our life things get broken. We
have all heard the term “broken
dreams”.
Our plans, hopes dreams and
our possessions either through
time and use or abuse get
broken. We dedicate ourselves
to events and work hard on the
planning and attach ourselves to
our ideas as being for the best.
When our ideas get trumped
we slink back into ourselves
feeling remorse anger or hurt.
We plan our vacation and a
natural disaster occurs and we
have to cancel, we plan our
retirement and illness or death
changes our plans.
We get married and raise a
family and divorce separation
and death occurs.
We dream of a new car and
are brought back to practicality
and reality by our partners. And
yet we continue to cling to the
ideas, dreams and plans
instead of accepting the
reality of our lives. Things get
broken and we refuse to
accept that truth.
Shinran Shonin realized
this truth in himself while at
the same time realized the allembracing compassion of
Amida that encircles us all
despite being broken.
Shinran
in
his
Kyogyoshinsho said: “I know
truly how grievous it is that I,
Gutoku Shinran, am sinking
in an immense ocean of
desires and attachments and
am lost in a vast mountains of
fame and advantage, so that I
rejoice not at all at entering
the stage of the truly settled,
and feel no happiness at
coming nearer the realization
of true enlightenment. How
ugly it is! How wretched!”
The Nembutsu teaching is
like the glasses that helps us
see the world clearly and in
focus.
Each of us will experience
the anger, hurt and the pain of
experiencing breakage
however seated within each
crack and break is the Dharma
showing us the true and real
self in reaction to each crack
and break.
The difficulty is that our
attachments get in the way not
allowing us to see things
clearly.
Having things around and
within us break is the reality or
truth of our lives, however it
doesn’t mean that we
ourselves become broken.
Shinran goes on to say,
“There is no greater selfobstruction than attachment,
no greater self-obscuration
than doubt. As that which
finally eliminates these
hindrances of doubt and
attachment, we have only the
teaching gate of the Pure
Land.
Never has there been any
separation: Amida’s vast Vow
always, of itself, grasps and
holds beings.
This is the
necessary way of its working.”

Rev. Shinseki

SPECIAL THANKS...
Thank you to the small but mighty number of members who were able to help Mr. Katsumi
Kinoshita and the Monterey Bonasi Club trim our Bonsai pine trees.
They were: Anne and Larry Oda, Rick Hattori, Mark Kono, Pamela
Villa Flores, and Akemi Ito. We did our best to learn some basic skill
of trimming back our beautiful bonsai pine trees.
We will need everyone’s help again on Saturday, May 12th from 9-12
noon to finish what we started. Please plan to join us!

Dharma School Updates
The Dharma School students and parents were busy planning and rehearsing their
play for the Hamamatsuri Service. The DS parents provided dessert for our recent
potluck. The DS students will be folding origami crane that Rev. Shinseki will take to
Japan in June. It was suggested that temple members could help fold cranes after
some of our Sunday services. & perhaps a light lunch could be served. On May 18th,
the DS will be participating in a “gleaning” – the first of the season. Sunday, May
19th, awards will be presented during the Gotane service to the DS students.
BWA Updates
The BWA Cabinet held their monthly meeting on April 21, 2013 at 11:30 am. We have received a survey
from The World Federation of Buddhist Women’s Association has requested we fill out a survey as to our
interests, suggestions or willingness to help organize this event. It will take place in San Francisco, on
Labor Day weekend in 2019. We will have copies of it in our May newsletter.
We discussed in length our Obon food and schedule. We will finalize our decisions at our May BWA
meeting. The cabinet was encouraged to attend the May 5th Obon meeting. We were informed that we
will have a larger booth to accommodate our needs. The CDBWA 2013 Cabinet was installed in Mt. View
on March 30th. The next BWA Meeting will be on May 12th at 11:30 am.
