The
Four
Pillars
of Homenetmen “Ararat”
1
Sportsmanship & Mutual Respect
We teach and endorse healthy sportsmanship as the spirit of fair play,
applying this principle equally to all of our group activities. We ask our
youth to respect all individuals, whether at athletic venues, scouting
events or other team interactions. All members, especially our youth, are
asked to exhibit a sense of fairness and common decency at all times and
in all interactions. In doing so, they project the highest level of personal
integrity, honesty and loyalty.
As an athletic youth organization, we continually strive to help
members achieve sporting excellence on the field, while also using those
activities to shape the hearts and minds of our youth. Life is not about
winning at all costs, but instead about sportsmanship, good citizenship
and making a positive impact on our communities and those around us.
2
Character & Confidence-Building
We help members elevate their character and confidence- building skills,
while simultaneously promoting discipline in all aspects of their lives
along with personal accountability and acceptance of responsibility for
all actions. We help our youth become more aware of their personal
identity, boosting confidence and helping individuals realize their
significance within a team and an organization. Members enjoy being
part of an enriching environment where they can develop their identity
while also thriving within supportive group dynamics.
3
Fun & Family Oriented Environment
One of our biggest accomplishments since our inception has been in
maintaining a close-knit family environment encompassing all of the
values that each family cherishes and strives to create in their own
household. This environment is drug and violence-free, nondiscriminatory and non-abusive. It also provides opportunities for our
youth to have fun while bonding with others and building a sense of
camaraderie. “Ararat” is successful when youth participate in activities
and as parents so generously volunteer their time and efforts.
4
Physical & Intellectual Growth
We will nurture and advance the physical and mental capabilities of
our youth in part by helping each individual realize the importance in
their identity as Armenian- Americans and by promoting our rich
cultural and national heritage. We strive to create and maintain an
environment that allows each individual to achieve their personal best,
whether that talent lies in athletic, scouting or cultural abilities. We also
expect and encourage our youth to give back to the organization and
their community through rewarding volunteer and mentor activities.

Programs & Activities
It is the Mission of the
Programs & Activities
Programs Division
Educational
As with organization with more than 2,500 members, the day-to-day
operations of its programs and activities, consumes the chapter and
division executive boards' limited time. In order to plan and implement
programs that will ensure our success for the next 30 years, a separate
entity – the Programs Division – was created, to solely concentrate on
identifying and devising solutions for the chapter's principal challenges.
The Glendale “Ararat” chapter Educational program includes workshops,
seminars, lectures and presentations. Topics include leadership building,
family, law, education and career planning. The ““Ararat”” seminar series
entitled “The Armenian Youth Identity” attracts all ages in the
community. Volunteer expert speakers share their insight; as well as offer
advice and discussions through Q&A.
Programs Division members possess diverse backgrounds and represent all
divisions throughout the “Ararat” Chapter's youth-oriented, communitybased environment. Former executive board members, and new members
are recruited for their professional and organizational expertise.
Scouting Division
D-League
Since its establishment in 1978, the Homenetmen “Ararat” Chapter's
Scouting Division has been instilling the values of teamwork and
leadership in its girl and boy scouts. Troop members develop character,
citizenship and personal fitness, and acquire scouting knowledge. This
program provides an environment that promotes personal growth while
at the same time encouraging strong values and morals that will serve the
scouts for the rest of their lives. Young scouts develop the skills to serve as
leaders in the Division and the community.
This is where the fun begins. The “Ararat” Basketball Development League
is an open program designed for children ages 7-12. The goal of this
program is to provide a well-organized and high quality youth basketball
experience that emphasizes fun, skill development, confidence building,
and character enhancement, all within a safe and friendly environment.
Athletics Division
The Homenetmen “Ararat”" Chapter's Athletic Division strives to serve
Glendale youth by creating the best family atmosphere for the physical
and intellectual growth of our members through athletics. Our athletes
have represented Western US Homenetmen in several international
competitions. They participate in the Navasartian Games, Pan Armenian
Games, City leagues and chapter-sponsored tournaments. In addition to
basketball, soccer & volleyball, we also offer individual sports such as
table tennis, Martial Arts, tennis, chess, artistic & rhythmic gymnastics.
Our proudest achievement is creating year-round activities for our youth,
using volunteer staff, comprising parents, experienced leaders, and
veteran coaches. Since 1978, we have enjoyed the exponential growth of
our membership, and the success of the Athletic Division is owed to the
tradition of young athletes joining
teams and honing their skills in
order to become coaches
in the future.
Our Scouting Division is a member of the Boy Scouts of America
Verdugo Hills Council. The Division currently has 500 scouts.
The Scouting Division of Homenetmen Glendale “Ararat” Chapter offers
the Eagle Scout program for boy scouts, through which scouts can achieve
the Eagle Scout rank – an award that has considerable significance not
only in scouting but in the business world. A Committee of volunteer
parents assists the troop in achieving their goals.
Wellness Program
The Glendale “Ararat” chapter, offers a Wellness program entitled
“Optimal Health”. This program promotes an environment that
integrates a healthy lifestyle that is comfortable, non-intimidating, and
culturally sensitive. The program takes place at the “Ararat” North
Campus Wellness Center and includes Muscle Sculpting, Cardio,
Muscle Sculpting for the Young at Heart,
Cultural Division
In its mission to teach the youth about our vibrant heritage and to
promote cultural programs in the community, the Homenetmen
Glendale “Ararat” Chapter formed a Cultural Division, which focuses
on introducing younger members to our rich culture with such classes as
painting, dance, poetry, art, drama and choir.
The Cultural Division organizes and hosts the Cultural Year End Program,
Recitals and Poetry Contest.

Ararat, the Chapter
It is the Mission of the
The Homenetmen Glendale “Ararat” chapter,
established in 1978, is the largest chapter
within the global Homenetmen network,
comprising more than 2,300 volunteer
members. In the Western United States,
Homenetmen is a non-profit organization
affiliated with the Boy Scouts of America.
The Glendale “Ararat” chapter serves a
membership base living largely in Glendale,
California and its surrounding areas. With a
population of more than 80,000 Armenian
Americans, Glendale boasts the largest
Armenian community within the Diaspora.
Ararat, the Chapter
From its founding until 1983, the chapter's offices were located next to
the original St. Mary's Church located on Carlton Drive in Glendale. In
1984, after raising funds the chapter purchased its first property on
Broadway Boulevard. The property consisted of two adjacent
single-family homes. The chapter was successful in obtaining a grant
from the City of Glendale for the purpose of renovating the center.
Scouts, athletes, parents and volunteers came together like a family
during the remodeling efforts to help complete the project.
The chapter offers year long Athletics, Scouting, Cultural, Educational,
Public Relations, Fund Raising, Wellness, Alumni and Parent activities
to the community it serves. The chapter also educates and engages with
the community at large through its government relations, corporate
partnership programs, and participation in various social and cultural
activities. Community activities include the annual Glendale Friendship
Games, the Navasartian Games, Summer Day Camp, Tennis Tournaments,
Ping Pong Tournaments, the Alan Hovagimian Games as well others.
In addition to the “Ararat” Main and North Campuses, the chapter has full
access to the Homenetmen Western US Regional 25-acre campground
in Frazier Park, Calif., known as Homenetmen Camp Tecuya.
By the late 1980's, it became apparent that the Broadway Center could
no longer serve the burgeoning athletic, scouting, and youth activities, as
well as the administrative functions of the chapter. An ad hoc Center
Committee was formed to search for a larger, more suitable center. The
search focused on Glendale and its immediate surrounding area. In 1996,
after several years of searching, the chapter found a highly suitable
property located at 3347 N. San Fernando Road in Los Angeles. After a
five-year construction process, the end result culminated in a fully
equipped, multifunction facility, which serves a large portion of the
Chapter's needs. In August of 2007 the chapter expanded it’s operation
with the purchase of the “Ararat” North Campus property.
The Homenetmen “Ararat” Chapter operates out of two multi-use
facilities. The “Ararat” Main Campus is equipped with a fitness center,
two basketball and volleyball courts, a coffee shop, an “Ararat” store, an
assembly hall, a banquet hall and meeting rooms. The “Ararat” North
Campus offers members a multi-sport gymnasium, a parents' lounge, a
cultural activities center and meeting rooms.
With a volunteer base of over 2,300 members and a community of
80,000 and growing, the Homenetmen Glendale “Ararat” Chapter is the
premier Armenian family and youth organization.
These programs and facilities are made possible due to the generosity of
the “Ararat” Chapter's donors, sponsors and volunteer members. The
chapter has impacted tens of thousands of lives and several generations of
Armenian Americans, and its activities continue to shape the community.
