Memorial Day Weekend’s Blessing of the Fleet Celebration marked the official kick-off of boating season, and we look forward to enjoying the beautiful warm weather, the refreshing waters of Lake Keowee, and the signature summer events we have grown to love here at The Reserve. I'm happy to report that our real estate office has enjoyed an increase in activity and summer 2012 is ahead of last year’s pace—both signs of an improving economy. The anticipation of our newest neighborhood, Village Point, and a growing selection of lakefront homesites offer great new opportunities for families to begin enjoying life on the water! See you at the lake! —Chuck THE RESERVE AT LAKE KEOWEE From The Club General Manager Away we go—it's boating season on Lake Keowee! This year’s Fireworks Display will take place on Wednesday, July 4th and the Pool and Snack Bar will be open the entire week of July 4th. Their names and information can be found in this newsletter and they encourage you to contact them with any comments, concerns, or new ideas. A handful of committee members rotate off their respective committees annually, allowing new members to join. If you have an interest in serving on any of these committees please contact me directly. This is a busy time of the year here at The Reserve—especially on the lake—and our Marina now has two new 22’ Cobalt boats to go along with the new pontoon boats we bought last year. Whether it is on land or on the lake, we want you to come join the summer fun! I look forward to seeing you around the Club. As always, I can be reached at the Orchard House (864-869-2100) or via e-mail: [email protected]. Sincerely, Frank Santoro, C.H.A., Club General Manager The Signs of Summer! Geocaching at The Reserve is yet another fun outdoor activity for adults, kids, and families! For those who have caught the “Geocaching Bug” as well as those who haven’t yet, we have added several more caches (for a total of 15!) for you to explore this Summer! Learn more about Geocaching and get the coordinates from Lauren Parnell in the Fitness Center, or on the Fitness page of our website: www.ReserveAtLakeKeowee.com/Fitness Codes should be turned in to Lauren when found. For the first time in history, The Reserve at Lake Keowee is releasing a developer-planned neighborhood of fourteen homes along the Marina Park, a stone’s throw from its waterfront Village and community amenities. Village Point features three home plans, ranging in size from approximately 2,650 to 3,750 square feet, each of which may be customized by adding terraces, garages and carports, and upper levels. Hop on the golf cart and follow the neighborhood path to the Village Market for a bite to eat. While you’re at it, pick up a picnic lunch for the boat and your mail at the Post Office. Walk to the marina, where Commodore Carlisle and his team have your boat fueled and cleaned, innertubes inflated, or your canoe or kayak at the ready for a day of fun on the water. Breeze up to the Great Lawn for any number of signature gatherings among neighbors and friends, or pop over to The Orchard House for a chef-inspired dinner, or 18 holes on the Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course. Exercise the dog— or better yet, take a date-night stroll through the manicured grounds of Village Point, dotted with artistic focal elements, lush landscape, and statuary, or extend your walk along the boardwalk overlooking The Reserve’s 200-slip Marina at the magical hour of sunset on Lake Keowee. This is a day in the life at Village Point. Village Point is drawing significant interest, and as such, is a rare opportunity to enjoy a premier lakefront lifestyle from the mid $600,000s. NEW HOMES FROM THE MID 600 S ASK ABOUT THE INTRODUCTORY INCENTIVES! This prime spot offers lake views, private boat slips, and all the conveniences of the marina, just steps away from your home. Great architecture, immediate access to the Village and all the club amenities in your back yard should make Village Point one of our most popular neighborhoods. IT’S ALL ABOUT THE WATER Marina Community: Your Concierge to Lake Keowee If your family is like most, you typically have too much to do and not enough time to do it all. In the summer, the time that’s most important to most of us transcends our to-do lists: time together, spent with family and friends. In the summer, you want enough time to hear the water when it calls you, the sounds of nature, your children and grandchildren laughing and your favorite songs playing. Summer is about finding time to relish the small things. And that’s why, particularly in the summer, we seek out assistance and services to make our lives easier — to take a bit off our plates so that we can make some room to relax. Enter Carlisle Jones, Commodore of The Reserve at Lake Keowee Marina. Think of Carlisle as our The RLK Marina and its staff, led by Commodore Carlisle, offer the following services to assist you in maximizing your summer season on the lake: Slips for lease concierge who connects you to the best on-the-water experiences and offers a cadre of services to make your “lake life” simpler, easier, and more enjoyable while you’re at The Reserve. As any good concierge would, Carlisle takes special care of the Marina and the families who use it as a resource, and over the years, many have come to consider him indispensable. He came to The Reserve in 2003, and has been the Commodore since the Marina opened. “Over the years, the Marina has expanded our services to meet the needs of a growing membership. Our jobs are to make enjoying the lake as effortless as possible,” Commodore Carlisle explains. Watercraft Rentals Marina Commodore, Carlisle Jones The Reserve’s Marina is equipped with 200 slips which can be individually leased on an annual basis. Slip leases include complimentary power and water, one in-and-out service at the marina (your boat is put into the water in April and pulled out of the water in October, at no additional charge). Day Docking Many Members who own their own boats take advantage of the Marina’s daytime docking services. Certain slips are designated as day docks and are often used to park the boat while families enjoy the Pool Pavilion, grab a bite to eat or stock up on some groceries at The Market, check their mail at the Village Post Office, or attend Sunday worship services – all within easy walking distance of the Marina. Some even take a golf cart up to the range to hit a few balls or play a round of golf on the Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course. Often, getting to The Village Center is quicker by boat than by car. No boat? No problem! The Reserve’s Marina has a variety of watercraft rentals for Members to enjoy, including pontoons (tri-toons), two Cobalt-brand open-bow cruisers, innertubes, knee boards, and skis. Kayak and canoe rentals are complimentary “A month after we bought our homesite at The Reserve, we met Carlisle and bought a boat. We were first-time boaters and knew nothing about what to do. We weren’t comfortable driving the boat because we’d never done it before, and Carlisle has been an excellent source of help. Having him to teach us made us feel very, very comfortable. " “Any of the folks at the Marina can help us if we are concerned or have questions. When our guests leave our home, they say they can see why we decided to build a home here. They all have such a positive experience at The Reserve.” — Cindy and Erv Burbach, RLK Members since 2007 Boat Detailing The Marina’s most popular service is boat detailing, which normally takes place in the spring when a boat is put into the water for the season. In the fall, the detailing includes cleaning the bottom of the boat before it is placed into storage. for Reserve Members. The Reserve’s Discovery Guests receive vouchers that cover the rental of a boat for half a day. The guest is required to pay for the fuel, but the Marina staff throws in fun items like innertubes and knee boards at no extra charge. Your Boat’s Ready When You Are Lessons Let’s say you live out of town and want to have your boat ready to enjoy as soon as you arrive at The Reserve. Done! Simply call ahead and the Marina staff will put your boat in the water, top it off with gas, clean it, and inflate your innertubes. When you’re finished, Carlisle and his team clean your boat, cover it, pull it out of the water, and put it back into storage. Many members who are new to the lake want to ensure they are properly trained and comfortable maneuvering their boat and solve basic troubleshooting issues that may arise. Carlisle and his team give boat driving lessons, concentrating on all major functions of the watercraft including emphasis in parking and docking the boat. Interested in learning how to wakeboard or ski? Allow the Marina to connect you with an experienced instructor! Lake Keowee is surprisingly calmer than most lakes of its size, even in the summer months, and is an ideal lake on which to refresh your skills and learn new ones. Service Your Boat Without Ever Leaving Your Dock Many members have their own dock with their own boat. Any service the Marina offers at its own docks can also be done at yours. A popular service is on-water, full-service fueling. A member of the Marina staff will come get your boat, fill it with gas, and return it to your dock. Watercraft Repair and Maintenance Carlisle and his team can act as liaisons to manage the necessary repairs or maintenance that your boat, pontoon, or jet ski requires. The Marina staff has relationships with the most trusted companies for watercraft repair and maintenance. For Members who do not own a trailer to pull their boat, Marina staff can pull the boat out of the water and take it for servicing. More minor repairs, such as the replacement of a battery, can be done on-the-spot at The Reserve’s Marina. Fishing Guides & Touring The lakes of the Upstate—Lake Keowee, Lake Jocassee, and Lake Hartwell —are a natural draw for avid and amateur fishers alike. The Marina staff can connect you with the lakes’ best fishing guides and, many times, can provide their own personal insights and knowledge of the wildlife found in our local waters. The Marina staff is happy to clean your catch for you, which you can then take back to your home or ask the Chef at the Orchard House to prepare to your liking. For those who want to take in nature with a tour, kayak tours of Lake Jocassee are regularly held by RLK’s Fitness Director. Winterizing and Boat Storage The Reserve’s Marina offers complimentary, uncovered boat storage to all Members. RLK’s Master Plan includes the future construction of a covered boat storage facility This story is the second in a series that will continue throughout 2012 highlighting the Marina. There’s nothing better at The Reserve than playing a round of golf and then relaxing by the pool or out on the lake. The golf shop would like to say thank you to Mother Nature for extending us such a mild winter this year and to all of our members who participated in our recent events. Here are the highlights: Superintendent’s Revenge For those who may not be familiar with The Superintendent’s Revenge, it is an event where our Superintendent and staff try their best to make each hole as hard as possible. Each four person team, playing in a scramble format, has to overcome awkward tee boxes, ridiculous pin placements, various yardages, a tractor and any other debris left out on the course by the maintenance staff. This year’s winners, either by skill or by much practice outside of the fairway, were: Bob Bacon, Doug Barker, Kimberly Martin and Chris Vincent! This is a 2-day stroke-play event where 100% of your current handicap is awarded. The lowest 2-day net total determines our Founder’s Cup Champion. We congratulate Mr. David Kowalski for winning the Men’s Division, and Mrs. Kathleen Carney for winning the Women’s Division —despite the wet conditions. We invite all couples to come and have a date night with a little golf thrown in. These fun events are nine-hole, four-person scrambles with your spouse as your partner. After play, enjoy a social dinner at the club where all winners receive a hug from the pros at the golf shop!!! All of our Nine and Dines will begin with a 4 pm shotgun start. This year’s remaining Nine and Dine dates are: July 8 • August 5 • September 9 • October 14 JUNIOR GOLF June begins our Junior Golf season and, as in the past, the golf shop will offer Saturday Clinics for juniors of all ages. There will be five two hour clinics and each will start at 9am with a break in the middle. Clinic times have been scheduled earlier this year to help our juniors beat the heat. We are very excited to introduce SNAG golf to our juniors this year. For those not familiar with SNAG golf, it has been described as miniature golf and regulation golf mixed all into one. It’s a fantastic way for our juniors to experience the game for the first time while learning full shots, chipping and putting. addy Alex G Victorious Jen Bacon Sombrero Sandbagger Open “Dos DesPROrados” Congratulations go to Kathy & John Carney and Jen & Bob Bacon for being our 2nd Annual Sombrero Sandbagger Open Winners! This year’s format was a 4-person, 9-hole scramble in which 45 people participated. Drinks were served prior to playing and a Cinco de Mayo celebration took place at the Halfway House where everyone enjoyed a Mexican dinner. In a Cinco de Mayo showdown, the Carneys and Bacons faced off with Ken Marinelli and the Gaddy family, and it all came down to the destruction of a piñata to determine the winner (A.K.A. a “Pinata Playoff”). Jen Bacon showed her power with an over the top move using a pitching wedge—she knocked it down, sealing the Bacon victory. We hope to see everyone back next year and invite all new members as well as their Legacy Members! We again invite all of our juniors to come and have fun, learn golf and meet someone while doing so. The following are the dates for this year’s clinics. July 7 • July 21 • July 28-29 (Jr. Club Championship) JUNIOR CAMP The Reserve will be offering full-day camps on three consecutive days, July 5, 6 & 7. Each day will offer something different from each department. Please mark your calendars and check our website for more details. July 5, 6 & 7 MEMBER SPOTLIGHTS: Some Folks Never Slow Down Jerry Post's racing days are FAR from over! Nancy and Jerry Post may have built their home here at The Reserve in 2004—but they have continued a fast-paced lifestyle of traveling around the U.S. fueling Jerry's extreme hobby and racing career. Jerry has been racing for 20 years with his Post Racing crew chief (and best friend), Howard Imhof, and his wife Nancy cheering him on. “I have been a 'Motorhead' since age 14 when I hopped up a motor scooter. I have owned a number of hot rod cars over the years, and I like to wrench the cars almost as much as driving,” says Jerry. He has built four of his own cars and currently runs in a class called American Sedan, racing highly modified Camaros and Mustangs—usually around 450 horsepower and similar to the Trans Am series in the 60s. Jerry has won many races in his career, ranking as high as 3rd nationally and 10th in 2011. He has experienced several wrecks and even taken a trip to the hospital, but was never badly hurt. He and Nancy are still enjoying life in the fast lane and Reserve Racers Jerry and Nancy Post have even encouraged some fellow Reserve Members to join in the action...as spectators, for now! It's obvious that Jerry enjoys every minute of his time on the track and in the garage, and he wears his years of experience like a badge of honor, referring to himself as “The Old Guy.” And he doesn't appear to have plans to slow down any time soon: "You can play golf, ride horses, go fishing, geocache, take your pick! Everyone needs a hobby, and this is mine. I am the oldest in the class but still kick butt, and working out with Lauren at The Reserve fitness facility is a great help keeping me in shape to drive!" Doug Barker and Dave Kowalski Reserve Members Build Arbor and Garden at A.R. Lewis Elementary Years ago, Reserve Members unofficially “adopted" nearby A.R. Lewis Elementary School as a place to volunteer and mentor. Most recently, a group of Members decided to design and build an arbor in front of the school to complement the flower gardens maintained by Nancy Kennedy and Georgia Elley as part of their Master Gardener certification. The arbor was designed and built by Janet Greiner, Doug Barker, Dan McGonigle and Dave Kowalski with funds raised by The Reserve Garden Club. Special thanks go to Georgia Elley who donated one of her paintings to be raffled off for the fundraiser. a sanctuary for golfers {and wildlife} Sam Crowe, CGCS, Certified Golf Course Superintendent 864-868-3062 | [email protected] We are looking forward to another great summer season at the lake! Hope you have made your plans to come and enjoy all that The Reserve has to offer, whether it be a day on the lake, a friendly tennis match, a dip in the pool, or a round of golf on our Jack Nicklaus Signature course. Golfers, please take note of our maintenance dates listed below to assist in your planning. Exciting news! Chris Vincent and Kathryn Gravely have taken on a project with Audubon International and are taking the necessary steps for The Reserve to become a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary for golf course properties. This program is an award winning education and certification program that helps golf courses protect our environment and preserve the natural heritage of the game of golf. The program will document how we are enhancing the valuable natural areas and wildlife habitats our property provides while also improving our efficiencies in minimizing harmful impacts to the golf course grounds and surrounding environments. Once this is completed, we will become one of, if not the first, in the Upstate of South Carolina to become certified. Want to learn more? Find details on the Audubon International website: www.auduboninternational.org Maintenance Schedule for the rest of this year: July 16–20: Golf course closed Monday – Friday – Aerify Greens with ¼” tine, Tees, Fairways, Collars and Verticut Fairways October 22–23: Golf course closed Monday 22 – Aerify greens with ½” tine, 2” x 2” spacing with sand topdressing If you have any questions on this or anything else related to The Reserve, please give me a call.
