A Day at the Vet
Adventures in Archaeology
Come spend the day at an animal hospital! Look at X-rays, bandage a
hurt buddy’s injured paw, dress yourself for “surgery” and meet a
professional “vet dog.” Find out what it's like to be an animal doctor
working at a vetrinary hospital.
Join Webb Mountain Discovery Zone for a fun and exciting mock dig using
authentic artifacts from the Connecticut Museum of Natural History!
Experience the life and work of a real archeologist, including proper
protocols in digging and how to assess our past history.
Dr.Jeffrey Santee, Veternarian, Country side Veternary Hospital,
Shelton, CT
Meg Ronk, Teacher, Webb Mt. Discovery Zone, Monroe, CT
Build it with LEGOs
LIVE Animals with the Audubon
Let your imagination run wild with tens of thousands of LEGO®! Build
engineer- designed projects such as boats, bridges, mazes and
motorized cars, and use special pieces to create your own unique
design! Explore the endless creative possibilities of the LEGO® building
system with the guidance of an experienced Play-Well instructor. This is
an ideal way to prepare young builders for the challenge of Engineering
FUNdamentals.
Learn all about the differences between vertebrate and invertebrate
animal groups. Check out live animals (mammals, reptiles, amphibians,
birds and invertebrates) and use props to identify, compare and contract
specific characteristics of our classroom visitors.
Tricia Kevalis, CT Audubon Society, Fairfield, CT
Ian Hogan, Play-Well TEKnologies, San Anselmo, CA
GRADES 2-3
(Students take two ninety-minute workshops)
Sweet Treats
Leonardo’s Robot Drum Horse
S'more Crescent Rolls, Apple Pie Bites, Funfetti Sugar Cookies. Don't
those sound delish?! Put on your chef's hat, tie your apron strings and get
your wooden spoon ready to mix up these tasty treats! Participants will
learn about kitchen safety basics, practice proper measuring techniques,
discuss recipe ingredients and bake with confidence, all while having fun.
Of course, snacking on our creations is a must (don't worry, there will be
enough to bring home to share)! You don't need to bring a thing, except for
your sweet tooth!
Follow in the footsteps of Leonardo as he invents the first modern robot, an
automatic drumming machine whose rhythms can be reprogrammed
flexibly and whose tempos adjust automatically. Learn the basic cadences
of a horse. Program your Robot Horse Drum to trot and galllop. Or
additional cadences that you teach your horse to do.
Susan Russell, Monroe Public Schools, Monroe, CT
Parents should note that allergy related foods may be present in this
workshop
A $12 materials fee per child is associated with this workshop. Payable via
cash or check on the day of the event (families will be notified prior to

ArtSmart! Studio: CHOPPED for Artists
The Eli Whitney Museum Staff, Hamden, CT
What Makes Helicopters and Jet Engines Work?
Join Monroe artist Kathy Vincent of ArtSmart! Studio for an experimental
creative workshop inspired by the popular cooking show "CHOPPED"...
each participant will receive a collection of mystery "ingredients" for the
creation of their masterpiece... random combinations of art elements,
design principals & mixed media...along with a "theme" to inspire their
creations.
How do jet engines help airplanes fly? How do helicopters go straight up,
straight down, forwards and backwards? Jet engines and helicopters defy
the laws of gravity! This workshop will demonstrate the basic laws of
science that make flight happen! Students will perform hands on
demonstrations to learn first hand how science is applied to the concepts of
powered and vertical flight.
Kathy Vincent, ArtSmart Studio, Monroe, CT
Erica Leonard, Sikorsky Aircraft, Stratford, CT
The Chemistry of Ordinary Stuff
Things get cold, things heat up, colors change,
gases evolve, solids appear from liquids, all because
of chemistry, and it’s all around us, every moment of
every day. You can split water molecules, get “goo”
from milk, rust iron in no time, and drop the
temperature of water to ten below zero, Celsius, in
less than a minute. There’s much more, too.
Chemistry is fun!
Tom Noonan, Talcott Mt. Center, Avon, CT
It Moves! Force and
Motion
Music, Art & Stories
Student’s first introduction into the world
of physics! Using various materials,
exploring how these affect the
properties of force and motion, learning
the basics about momentum, potential
and kinetic energy along the way.
Paint a song, write a painting, play a story. Do you
know what Picasso was thinking when he painted? Or
Mozart when he composed? Every culture tells stories,
paints pictures, and plays music. Many times these
inspire one another. In this class we will travel the
world and time to become experts in listening to these
creative minds. And then, of course, we will say, write,
paint, and play back.
Janice Hubina, EverWonder Children’s
Museum, Newtown
Sarah Sherban, Ignite Creative Learning Studio, North
Haven, CT
GRADES 4-5

vintage buttons, metal, collage, plaster, ink and
recycled materials. Learn to transfer images onto
wood. And take home instructions so you can
replicate your creations on your own!
Learn some fun new ways to think with strategy

PARTICIPANTS CAN ATTEND KEYNOTE AND ONE WORKSHOP.
KEYNOTE ADDRESS: Creating the Right Environment
Education is about understanding, not merely the knowledge related to a specific discipline or parental /educational strategy. Children
have an immense variation in their social, emotional, and educational backgrounds, which demand individualized acceptance and
consideration. The development of higher order thinking skills and problem solving techniques, creativity training, and autonomous
learning should serve as the foundation for the emergent and realized potential of the children we raise and the students we teach. Learn
more about the strategies, practices, tools and resources available to parents and educators, while recognizing that a focus on interest and
learning style can provide a wealth of experience.
Jeff Danielian, Director of the La Salle Scholars Program
WORKSHOP #1: Choosing Love
Scarlett will talk about the importance of Social and Emotional Learning in schools and her advocacy in the past 3 years since the murder
of her 6-year-old son in his classroom at Sandy Hook Elementary. She will share a simple yet profound formula for choosing love in any
situation. She will talk about the neuroscience behind choosing love and benefits - also about Post Traumatic Growth and the importance
of consciously choosing love over fear for a meaningful, connected and fulfilled life.
Scarlett Lewis, Founder of The Jesse Lewis Choose Love Foundation, Newtown, CT
WORKSHOP #2: Gifted 101
Everything you always wanted to know about gifted kids! In this session, we will discuss the characteristics of gifted children, including:
asynchronous development and Dabrowski’s Overexcitabilities; their educational as well as social and emotional needs, and how best to
meet those needs; Fixed vs. Growth Mindset; and resources that are available to parents and educators .
Katie Augustyn, Connecticut Association for the Gifted
WORKSHOP #3: Communication with your Your Child’s Teacher
Communication between home and school when something isn't working for your gifted student can be frustrating, feel pointless, or
even negative. It doesn't have to be. Find better ways to communicate with your child's teachers, and strategies to feel like both school
and home are on the same page when it comes to your child's needs.
Kate Maupin, Gifted Education Teacher and Enrichment Specialist
WORKSHOP #4: New Family Habits
With all of the academic, social and extracurricular demands children meet every day, navigating their busy lives can become
overwhelming, especially since their social and emotional needs requires a delicate balance. What if parents could improve the entire
family’s well –being by practicing simple daily habits? Starting early in life, we teach children to brush their teeth and buckle their seat
belts, essential practices for healthy and safety. In this workshop, participants will learn how to implement easy research-based skills an
strategies that will help everyone in the family reduce stress and anxiety so they many flourish and thrive in life.
