Around the Traps Autumn Edition 2012
Around the Traps AUTUMN EDITION 2012 A Note from Nigel The New Year is well on the way and Christmas seems a long time ago. We have two very important events this year – Star Gardens will be celebrating 50 years in aged care and 20 years in Beaudesert in March. In recognition of these two amazing milestones, we are organising a couple of events: Wednesday, 7th March – All staff, volunteers and residents are invited to start the celebrations with a special BBQ. Sunday, 11th March – A Garden Party for staff, volunteers, residents, families and special guests who have helped to shape Star Gar- dens into the organisation it is today. Information and Invitations to both of these events will be coming out closer to the date. On Thursday, 23rd February we will be holding our Board Orientation Day for all Board Members. We will be inviting Resident’s families to come and meet some of the Board along with having a light dinner at 5pm. Invitations will be coming out to all families later this year. During the recent bad weather we had a number of staff who were unable to come to work due to flooding. There were a number of staff who worked above and beyond to ensure all our residents were looked after during this difficult time. I know you will join me in thanking them for their great effort. Our plan for our expansion of Star Gardens is progressing well. In the last few months we have been researching the market in the Scenic Rim Region and the potential demand for a Retirement Village. This information is very important to ensure we know what people would like. We are aiming to have an application into Council by April/ May this year. I know we have a number of new residents who have come to Star Gardens over the last few months and I would like to welcome you and thank you for choosing Star Gardens as your home. If any of you wish to discuss anything with Annmarie or myself please ask at Administration. Regards, Nigel Faull CEO We have your future at heart! 2 Isn’t it funny how day by day NOTHING CHANGES but when you look back EVERYTHING IS DIFFERENT! of clothing is laundered at an off site facility and it is important that all personal clothing is properly labelled to ensure that it is returned safely to Star Gardens. A Message from Annmarie The following procedures apply: Star Gardens will label all new residents personal clothing at a cost to residents of $1.00 per item including GST. The new additional clothing is to be handed in to the administration office during office hours Mon– Fri for transfer to the laundry for labelling. After the labelling is completed the laundress will deliver new items the resident. All delicate laundering is the responsibility of the families as these items are not suitable for the industrial laundering process. Welcome to the first edition of Around the Traps for 2012. As another year starts, I would like to welcome our new residents and their families and friends to our Star Gardens family. Round Up What we’ve been up to... the excellent meals they prepared. January is traditionally a bit quieter at the beginning as everyone recovers from the excitement of Christmas. Towards the end of the month things started to get rolling again on Tuesday the 17th with a trip out to the Golf Club for Seniors Day. Wednesday the 18th saw the bus heading out with some of our Fern and Lilly residents for a scenic drive around the local farming area. Thursday the 19th in a lead up to Australia Day residents enjoyed an outdoor morning tea in the Rainbow Cafe area followed by some “Australiana” 3 On Monday the 20th the residents in Violet enjoyed the opportunity to do some cooking in their kitchen area. Friday the 24th everyone got together (staff, residents and family members) in Jessamine for entertainment and a sing-along. Unfortunately Australia Day festivities on Saturday the 25th had to be cancelled as it turned out to be really wet. With much local flooding it became impossible for quiet a few people getting to Star Gardens including our entertainment for the day. Monday the 24th Residents enjoyed a morning of piano playing by Arlie, one of our regular volunteers. Arlie plays beautifully and we always enjoy the opportunity to listen. February kicked off with preparations for Valentines Day by getting together on Wednesday the 8th for some arts and crafts preparing lots games. Thong throwing was of hearts for decorations on very popular with the men... the day. On Monday the 20th Claire did some gardening with the Fern Residents. For those who are a part of the Old Fellowship Group a trip down to the Anglican Church Hall to celebrate Shrove Tuesday on the 21st was much enjoyed. The morning was spent playing games including the popular pancake tossing and a chance at a number of lucky door Prizes. Wednesday the 22nd the Men’s group went off on their bus trip and once again on Friday the 24th Arlie came in to entertain our Lily Residents with her piano playing. Monday the 27th was the home headed off on an infor- monthly Old Fellowship mative trip to Egypt, the land meeting down at the Angliof the pyramids with Arm can Church hall. For those chair Travel. Thursday the residents who attend it is a lovely opportunity to catch up with friends over morning tea and attend a service. To finish off the month we are having a visit from some music students who will entertain us with some Violin and Piano playing. What a treat. Men's Group The change to the Men’s Group format will enable us to get out every month and visit different areas of interest. But first, a visit to a Pub would be a great way to start the year off. We are all going to the Logan Village Hotel on Wednesday 22nd February to have our meeting, followed by lunch and a few beers. A few places we will be going in 2012 is the Beenleigh Historical Museum, Tamborine Brewery and Cheese Factory and we are planning a Formal Lunch (white tablecloths and candelabras) in the bush. We are still working on some of the fella’s that sit at home, to come along and see what the Men’s Group is all about. We do have lots of fun and the only rule that is strictly enforced is “What mischief we get up to when we are out remains on the bus” George Hermann will also be sadly missed from the Men’s Group. We will miss his order at the pub for 6 chips and a small beer We have a busy year coming up, and I can assure you there will be lots more in the next few Newsletters When you're curious, you find lots of interesting things to do. Walt Disney 5 During December all our residents had the chance to attend 1 of 3 special Christmas luncheons with family members. Functions included traditional lunch with entertainment and a visit from Santa via golf buggy (so as not to wear out the reindeers). 6 Lead: “How much am I short?” Skip: “You ought to know, you’re closer to it” Star City Rollers The 2012 Bowling Season is under way, and the pressure will be on for the next 8 months. We had elections for key positions within the team on Saturday 21 January 2012. Marjorie Oberhardt is Star City Rollers Team Captain, Bill Pearce is Captain of the Kookaburra’s and Barry Dickman is Captain of the Lorikeets. Fran Smith remains as Official Scorer. We have some new faces and I would like to welcome aboard Sandra Stewart, Alice Love, Margaret Dux and Ruth Sutherland. There is a lot of future skill to be developed and all are showing very promising signs. We lost one of our great characters recently with the passing of George Hermann. He loved his bowls and kept us entertained at the games. George is sadly missed but not forgotten. The In-house Shield contested by the Kookaburra’s and the Lorikeets has been renamed “The George Hermann Shield”. When it was put to the team as a suggestion it received a unanimous “yes” vote. We start our Wongaburra/ Star gardens Shield (that we hold) on Thursday 1st March. Wongaburra has a new mat and we have been told it is longer and very fast. We will dispatch a couple of spies before the 1st to assess the situation and report back. Prior preparation and planning it is called!! Everyone is looking forward to a great year, and hopefully Morrie Dux will come on board as a helper. Go the Rollers!!!
