Dancing Outlaw to take stage at the V Club By DEREK HALSEY For The Herald-Dispatch Jesco White, known as West Virginia’s Dancing Outlaw, is scheduled to take the stage at the V Club today, Oct. 16. His appearance comes just days before the DVD release of the movie, “The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia.” The film is a documentary about Jesco and the rest of his family who have achieved both positive and negative notoriety in the coal country of Boone County, W.Va. “The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia” was executive produced by Johnny Knoxville of “Jackass” fame. The film was made by director Julien Nitzberg who spent more than a year in Boone County with Jesco and his extended family. Nitzberg, a former New York City punk rocker, eventually landed a job in Whitesburg, Ky., at the famed Appalshop Arts and Edu- cation Center as a filmmaker. While making a documentary about West Virginia rockabilly legend Hasil Adkins, Nitzberg met Jesco’s sister Mamie which led to meeting the rest of the kinfolk. At the heart of Jesco’s fame is his talent at what is called mountain tap dancing. He learned this unique hybrid of dance from his late father, D. Ray White. But through appearances in previous documentaries, videos, articles and now this new movie, Jesco and his clan are also known for their law breaking, hell raising, pill popping rowdy behavior, much to the chagrin of some West Virginians who worry about their state being stereotyped. “I worked at Appalshop so I’m really aware of that,” said Nitzberg. “We’ve got two or three different people in the movie who Courtesy of Tribeca Films Please see OUTLAW/6C Jesco White Melvin back at Opry House Local bluegrass favorite and Hall of Fame inductee returns for concert By DEREK HALSEY L For The Herald-Dispatch ocal bluegrass favorite Melvin Goins and his band Windy Mountain return to the Mountaineer Opry House today, Oct. 16. The concert marks a little over a year since Goins was inducted into the International Bluegrass Association Hall of Fame as a member of the Lonesome Pine Fiddlers. The Mountaineer Opry House is located 10 minutes east of Huntington off of the Milton exit on Interstate 64. Tonight’s show starts at 7:30 p.m. The doors open at 5 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and $5 for children. More information can be found at www.mountaineeropry.com or by calling 304-743-5749. With more than a half century in the entertainment business, Goins has seen a lot of music history in the Tri-State. The West Virginia native and Catlettsburg, Ky., resident remembers his time with the Lonesome Pine Fiddlers as his big break in the bluegrass world. “I grew up in a little town called Bramwell, West Virginia, about eight or 10 miles out of Bluefield,” said Goins. “I grew up in the coal fields of Bluefield. I left home in November of 1953 and that’s when I came to Kentucky and went to work in Pikeville on WLSI with the Lonesome Pine Fiddlers, me and my brother (Ray). That was my first trip to Kentucky. I got homesick and wanted to go home but didn’t have any money to get back. We went to work and had a live daily radio show there every day from 11:30 to 12 noon, and we did it TICKET: Lillianne D. Bowersock has a ticket to ride — err, fly — and is already on cloud nine. Come Monday, Oct. 18, the Ona resident flies to Malvern, England, where her youngest son, Tyler Davis Massey, and his wife (her homeland) live with her granddaughters, Lily Grace, 13, and Isabella “Bella”, 10, whom she hasn’t seen for four years. Lil’s other daughter-inlaw, Angela, wife of her son, TR, and mother to her grandson, Tim Robert “Tripp” Massey III, of Worthington, Ohio, bought Lil’s round-trip ticket to England as a retirement gift. Lil is expected back home Nov. 1. Enjoy that well-deserved grandmother time, Lil. Toril Lavener/For The Herald-Dispatch Melvin Goins and his band Windy Mountain return to the Mountaineer Opry House tonight. Doors open at 5 p.m., and the show starts at 7:30 p.m. live. We were sponsored by Home Furniture and Modern Appliance, a big furniture store in Pikeville.” After a long stint with the Lonesome Pine Fiddlers, Goins joined the legendary Stanley Brothers in the mid-1960s. “Some of the first shows we played when I went to work with (The Stanley Brothers) in January of 1966 were early morning shows and matinees in schools for children in elementary schools and high schools. But the leader of the Stanley Brothers was his brother Carter who played guitar, sang lead vocals and wrote many bluegrass standards, all of which made him a legend in his own right. Carter Stanley died of alcoholism in December of 1966 at the age of 41 about 11 months after Goins joined the group. Goins remembers his time spent with the legend. “He was a well-spoken man,” said Goins, of Carter Stanley. “When he talked to you, he was real easy to talk with. If he was talking about something he felt good about, he just laid it out and didn’t hold anything back. He was just straightforward. He was not laid back. He was out with it. Plain and simple. Just a mountain man. He was a great guy. His singing and emcee work, he was great at that. He really knew how to handle people. He could go on a stage and he could make you laugh or he could make you cry. He had a tone in his voice with his talking and his singing and he could just about hypnotize a crowd of people. He was a good boss, but he was a hard driver. I mean, there wasn’t no playing around. I’ve seen him cut up and joke with you just as funny as anybody in the world, and then on some days he wouldn’t speak five words to you. That was just his turn, that was his way and everybody knew it.” Goins also befriended Molly O’Day, the West Virginia Music Hall of Famer who lived in Huntington for many years where she broadcast a gospel radio show. “I went to Molly O’Day’s house, me and my wife Willa did, when they were broadcasting every day out of their home in Huntington,” said Goins. “We went there and sat in on their show one day. Lynn Davis and Molly O’Day broadcast every day from their house. They had that all gospel radio show. My wife had a group called the Woodettes and Lynn and Molly played a lot of their records. They got a lot of requests for the Woodettes back then, so we would take albums up there and they would play them, and we would sit there and talk and they would interview us on the radio as a guest.” Carey, Linden Chiles, Joyce Ey, Milton Herndon and Helen Toothman. Harry’s team members are Wanda Edwards, Freda Kagan, Bob Griffis, Marilyn Cohen and Sally Cyrus. All-League First Team consisted of Harry Fischer, Mary Leaberry, Helen Toothman, Linden Chiles and Bob Griffis. AllLeague Second Team featured Bob Trocin, Edna Brooks, Janice Gold, Scott Moore and John Lusk. Most Valuable Player award went to Harry Fischer, while Linden Chiles received Most Improved Player award. Janice Gold and Bob Griffis won the mixed doubles tournament, with Mary Leaberry and Linden Chiles, runners-up. That is said very clearly at the beginning of the movie. I’ve toured with this movie to lots of film festivals and everywhere I go, no one watches the movie and says, ‘That’s West Virginia.’ Occasionally you get some moron who says something. But we showed it at this festival in New Jersey and there were Catholic nuns there because it was inside a church center. I was totally freaked out, but they said, ‘Listen, we’ve got the same kind of outlaws in New Jersey and they are everywhere. It’s not a West Virginia thing.’ They liked the movie and said, ‘We deal with a lot of people with drug addiction problems and we’re used to this.’” Musician Hank Williams III, a 6 PM 6:30 7 PM 7:30 8 PM 8:30 9 PM 9:30 10 PM 10:30 MOVIE (N) New programmings (HD) High Definition 11 PM 11:30 12 AM NBC Nightly Wheel of Cash Explo- Outlaw “Tracy Vidalin” Law & Order: Los AnLaw & Order: Special WSAZ News Saturday Night Live News (N) Fortune (R) sion Dbl. My class recently learned about reproduction. All of the girls accepted it in a mature manner, but it’s another story with the boys. Now all the boys look at me funny when I walk through the hall. It makes me feel awkward. Should I ignore them or should I say something? — EMBARRASSED IN MICHIGAN DEAR EMBARRASSED: Right now, I suspect most of your classmates are feeling awkward. A frank discussion about reproduction has been known to make students older than you uncomfortable. It is, however, a part of life — and contrary to what some may think, ignorance isn’t bliss. Acting the way the boys are is normal for their age. But if it continues, rather than saying anything to them — which might encourage more of the same — talk to a teacher about it. It wasn’t until after graduation that our parents told us that while we have a relative in common, it is by marriage, and we are not related to each other. Paul and I have a lot in common, and he has expressed an interest in pursuing a relationship with me. Paul is a great guy, but I’m reluctant to date him because all our friends think we’re related. Williams, who recently appeared at the V Club in Huntington, sees the positive side of the Whites and talks about his camaraderie with Jesco and crew and their notoriety over the years. “It doesn’t matter what kind of business you’re in, some people are going to take advantage of you and some people aren’t, and that happens to everybody out there,” said Williams. “As far as my feelings for Jesco and the whole family, I’ve always made it really clear that it is more of a friendship and a love. I’ve always tried to keep the business out of it as much as possible. I’ve always been there because of heartfelt reasons. I’ve met a lot of folks from down around there and they are a very strong breed, that’s for sure.” As for the White’s tradition of mountain tap dancing, at the present time there are no younger members of the family who desire to carry the legacy forward. “One of Jesco’s nephews up in Minnesota, we thought he was going to do it,” said Nitzberg. “He actually bought tap shoes and we filmed him and stuff, but he never kept it up. It’s a really sad thing. No one in the family is keeping the tradition. It’s going to die with Jesco. We kept hoping that someone in the next generation would discover it. But, it’s like everything else. He’s got this niece that is a good dancer, but she’s into Beyonce’. He’s got another nephew who plays music and is really good named Derkie and he’s into Hendrix and Pink Floyd and Tupac. “Jesco is the last one because he loves the old timey music, and Mamie loves the old timey music. The younger generation does not respond. One time I was in a vehicle with Mamie and a couple of the younger ones and I had some Bob Wills music on and all of the younger generation was like, ‘What is this (stuff). Turn it off.’ Only Mamie and I were enjoying the Bob Wills music. You can’t force people to like something. To me, it is kind of this part of America where everyone is being standardized into the same clothes, the same culture, the same malls and they’re even losing their accents.” The V Club is located at 741 6th Ave., Huntington.
