SUMMER CAMP 2010
OPEN HOUSE
HALLOWEEN PARTIES AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS
OPEN GYM
WINTER CAMP 2010-2011
A summer filled with fun activities and academic exploration has given way to a new
school year, a successful fundraiser and we are looking forward to our OPEN
HOUSE, Halloween parties, and our first ever winter camp! There are many new
faces among our volunteers, in our classrooms and in our mentoring and day treatment programs.
All of our programs, so varied in nature, are what make the Jubilee Family Center
such a vital network and resource for so many in our community. Every day residents look to Jubilee for help and advice regarding education, employment and any
number of other issues.
Jubilee looks to organizations such as the Greater Lynchburg Community Trust and
Genworth to fund summer camp; Babcock and Wilcox to donate computers to update our computer lab; to the volunteers from E.C Glass High School, Heritage High
School, Lynchburg College and Liberty University to help implement the programs
and to Randolph College for space to hold our ever important fundraiser Racing Under the Stars.
We look to educators and counselors to help us find new ways to reach out to the
community with additional solutions to problems old and new. In some instances,
help for new issues facing parents comes from programs such as the Young Men‟s
Mentoring Program that have been in place for many years. A new solution to the
question of safe, reliable child care comes in the form of our Winter Camp to help
parents during the long winter break from school this year.
Thanks to the entire community of volunteers and donors, we are able to provide
hope and practical solutions to all that walk through our doors. We hope you will
come to our OPEN HOUSE on OCTOBER 26 to see ALL that is going on at Jubilee,
old and new!

EDUCATION DIRECTOR’S REPORT - Ghana Ramey
Total enrollment for August was 83 with 95% of all students demonstrating improvement in the camp in which they
participated.
August was an exceptional month at Jubilee. As Summer Camp ended the students continued to show proficiency in
their studies and behavior and continued to demonstrate improvement in their social development employing the principles of respect and good manners. More consistently they exhibited understanding of the necessity to verbally solve
disagreements.
During August, the students participated in Vacation Bible School enjoying bible stories, arts and crafts and dance and
music; Kids Fit Camp, Wellness for Life Camp, Etiquette Camp during which the students learned about proper table
setting and manners; Fine Arts Music and Dance Camp and the Back to School Study Skills Camps where students
were equipped with several practical principles to help them manage their time and prepare for success in school.
On Fun Fridays, campers went to FunQuest, swimming and the movies. On the last Friday of Summer Camp the students enjoyed our traditional Back-to–School Pep Rally sponsored by the Darren Wood Family and Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. Both donated school supplies and backpacks for every camper and for children in the community.
Also, we were pleased to have a former Jubilee student as the keynote speaker who spoke to the children about the importance of staying in school and valuing their education.
As we concluded camp we had several special activities. The Etiquette class prepared brunch and put into practice
their etiquette skills. The students had the opportunity to plant vegetables such as squash, string beans, and tomatoes in
the Jubilee garden with the Master Gardeners of Lynchburg. During August, the children picked all of the vegetables
from the garden and took them home to share with their families. These activities were enjoyed by all. Summer camp
was funded by the Greater Lynchburg Community Trust, HUT Foundation, Centra Health, Presbytery of the Peaks
and USDA.
PICTURE THIS!
FACELIFT FOR TRADES BUILDING
On October 20, ten students from Jubilee will begin a
new creative adventure! Thanks to the Picture My
World project at Riverviews Art Space, fourth and fifth
grade students will begin a seven-week exploration of
the world of photography. Students will be given digital
cameras in order to photograph scenes from their daily
lives, record important events and get pictures of people
that play a special part in their lives. After the photos
have been taken, they will be printed, framed or
mounted and distributed to the students. The students
will then choose their favorite photos, give the class an
oral report or explanation and also use them to construct a creative narrative. Students will describe each
scene, its significance in their lives, what they like or
dislike about the photo and other pertinent information.
Adding the narrative component to the program will
ensure that the students not only learn the basics of
digital photography but also improve their writing skills
and their oral communication skills. On the final day of
the program, students will tour Riverviews Art Space
where their works will be on display.
In partnership with Jubilee, Mike Linthicum
from Job Corps has energized the Trades Program while updating the Occupational Trades
building. His students have gotten some great
hands on experience by building new rooms in the
Trades building and by doing some touch up and
repair work in the academic building and the
gymnasium. Students are busy learning to drywall, plaster and other electrical, plumbing and
carpentry skills. This is a wonderful mutually
beneficial partnership and we are glad to assist
an agency that is preparing individuals for the
workforce in economic times such as these.
We are so grateful to Riverviews for partnering with
Jubilee on this exciting, multi-faceted project!
JUBILEE NAMED AS GRANT PARTNER
Jubilee has been named as a partner with the
Lynchburg City Schools in the 21st Century
Community Learning Center‟s Project along
with Heritage Elementary School, Sandusky
Middle School and RS Payne Elementary School,
Jubilee will offer after -school tutoring support,
parent education workshops and winter break
activities camps. This is a three year grant.
RACING UNDER THE STARS
The Claire Noyes Cox Indoor Riding Center at
Randolph College was once again the site for Jubilee‟s
fundraiser Racing Under the Stars . The second annual
event took place Saturday, September 11 with a crowd of
over 200 in attendance. While enjoying delicious food
from Meriwether-Godsey, guests staked claims on silent
auction items before the „races‟ began. The betting windows opened, funny money wagers were placed and as
the races began, all in attendance gathered round to
cheer on their pick for that race. In between races, the
Skyler McCurley Band performed (with some great
guest artists!) and kept the crowd on its feet. At the conclusion of the 6th
race and with all
winnings cashed in,
the live auction got
underway. At
stake were a celebrity golf game, trips
to New York and
Hollywood, game
dinners and more. At the end of the evening, $25,000
was raised in support of Jubilee and its programs. Many
thanks to event chair Brooks Morrison; Logistics Supervisor Clay Craddock; Event sponsors Moore and Giles,
Inc. Century Beverage and Prototype Media; host sponsors Bank of the James, Bankers Insurance, Babcock‟s
Auto Service, and the Orthopaedic Center of Central
Virginia. Very special thanks to J.T. Tallon, Tina Hill
and the entire Randolph College community for allowing
Jubilee to use their wonderful facility for this unique
fundraiser!
BUILDING YOUNG MEN MENTORING
PROGRAM REACHES RECORD
NUMBERS
The fall‟s first Building Young Men Mentoring
Program broke attendance records with 51
young men present for the kick off session on
September 25 at Jubilee. Young men, ages 8-18
from Lynchburg city, Amherst, Bedford and
Campbell counties attended the meeting. The
program is in partnership with Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity with an objective to build self
esteem, improve academic performance and
encourage students to complete high school and
pursue an advanced degree. The program also
focuses on increasing social awareness and developing problem-solving skills in order to
make more responsible decisions.
Session topics include Manhood, Dating Relationships, Family Values, Self Esteem, Healthy
Eating and Fitness as well as Career Goals. All
sessions are held at Jubilee on the 2nd and 4th
Saturday through June 4 from 11:00 a.m. to
2:00 p.m. and transportation is provided. Enhancing the programs are special recreational
activities and college tours which are underwritten by Genworth.
