Next Meeting: Margaret Wolf, 3rd VP-Programs and Workshops
April 3, 2014
Eleanor McCain is visiting in Dallas for two events. She’ll arrive in Dallas to be our
speaker on Thursday, April 3and will be greeting the public at a museum show
opening at the Museum of Geometric and MADI Art here in Dallas. The exhibit,
Quilts: The New Geometry is curated by local quilt artist, Sue Benner and was
partially underwritten by the Quilter’s Guild of Dallas. The opening reception at 6:30
pm on Friday is open to the public. For more information about the exhibit , see the
ad on page 14 of this newsletter, and also the Calendar of Events. Dr. McCain is a
practicing Internal Medicine Physician in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. Although her
career has been in science, she has always sought a creative outlet, focusing on the art
quilt after 1994. Her work has been exhibited at Quilt National five times and she
was a juror for the prestigious exhibit in 2011. Eleanor lectures frequently on the art
quilt, and has been featured in numerous publications. http://www.eleanormccain.net/

Guild meeting speaker—Pat Yamin, president and founder of Come Quilt With Me,
is well known in the quilting industry. She has appeared on many television and radio
quilt shows, the most recent being The Quilt Show with Ricky Timms and Alex
Anderson. Her company manufactures templates and other tools that assure accuracy
and shorten the time necessary to make a quilt. She invented the Brooklyn Revolver

From the Presidential Ponderings
Judy Kriehn, President
President
We survived our 33rd Quilt Show! Big kudos to Marie Zaczkowski for leading her
committee to what many have pronounced to be our best show yet.
I had to be at my “real job” all day Friday, but came bright and early Saturday morning.
I started the day by visiting the booths of all of our newest vendors to welcome them to
our show. Then I went to hear my buddy Tonya Littmann give her lecture. I was
reminded of the many quilting adventures we’ve had together.
After lunch, Marie and I plopped down at the Miniature Quilt Auction. I had no great
designs on anything specific, but figured something would catch my fancy. I began
flipping through the bidder book, and was surprised to find that one of the donations had
been made in my honor! Member Mary Masal made a quilt she entitled “Don’t Pull Up
a Chair Yet, Judy!” Wow! I felt so honored and humbled by that expression of
appreciation.
My first purchases were a couple of postcards – also made by
Mary. One is entitled “Solar Eclipse” and the other “Once in a
Blue Moon.” I think they make a nice matched pair, don’t you?
Then, I got into a bidding war
with Mary Lord over Tonya
Littmann’s beautiful
contribution, “Sunny Blossoms.”
(Needless to say, I won.)
Other bidding wars I
entered were abandoned in
favor of bidding on the quilt about me. Yes, it’s ALL
ABOUT ME! Ha! I bid $50.00. (Then nobody would bid
against me. ) Lloyd chastised the audience, telling them they
could bid against me. Then Linda Newman placed a bid and
said “I think we should push the bids up, but agree to give
the quilt to Judy.” The really big compliment was that
Lloyd Cooper and his lovely wife Mary, our loyal auctioneers
for years and years, bought that little quilt for me! Is that
cool or what? And here is Don’t Pull Up a Chair yet, Judy
for your viewing pleasure. Woo-hoo!
On Sunday afternoon, I got the honor of drawing the winning entry in our Raffle Quilt
giveaway. The quilt was won by Rachael Hartman. Congratulations to Rachael, and my
condolences to all the non-winners. It is an awesome quilt.
The rest of the day was mostly a blur of walking around, collecting signs and easels as
parts of the show were completed. My FitBit informed me I racked up 16,700 steps
during the day.

Another topic near and dear to my heart… Our upcoming “In-Town Retreat.”
(Continued from page 2) For a long time, I’ve wished we had a retreat option that didn’t involve packing up
everything including the kitchen sink and hauling it out of town. For me, it’s expensive
and hugely nerve-wracking, as I worry about what I’m forgetting. So, when Chris
Becker and Rhonda Anderson joined the retreat planning committee and I became
President, I suggested that they might explore the possibility of hosting something here
in town.
Meanwhile, several quilters have become “regulars” at the Dallas Crafter’s Marathon
Meetup. They meet at the Dallas Board Game Meetup space in Plano once a month. For
a bargain basement price of $25.00, you get a six foot table and a chair for the weekend,
as well as the camaraderie of the others sitting in close proximity. I actually pieced both
of my show entries during meetup weekends!
So… Guess what we are doing the first weekend in April? Yep, we are hosting a
Quilter’s Guild of Dallas In-Town Retreat at the Dallas Board Game Meetup space! I’m
signed up already. Are you? For more information, just turn to page 13 in this
newsletter.
Judy
Did you misplace anything at the Show??
Did you lose or misplace something at the 2014 Dallas Quilt Show that you would really like to get back?
Please send an email describing the item in question to Martha Wolf at [email protected] to see if it was turned
in at Lost and Found at the show office. Prez Judy lost her bag of booty – ‘til Wednesday no less – and Martha HAD IT!

Quilt Show 2014
Dallas Quilt Celebration 2014 –
By the Numbers
Marie Zaczkowski,
6th VP-Show
7,733 people attended Dallas Quilt Celebration 2014
386 members, family and friends volunteered at the
show
398 quilts were displayed in the show
50 quilts were entered in the show chair’s theme category –
153
Modern Quilts
vendors participated in the show
120 mini-quilts and postcards were created and donated to the
auction to benefit The Children’s Craniofacial Association
It has been my honor to have served as your show chair for the past two years. Again
this year, as I walked around the show, I heard many compliments including “this is the
best show ever”. Much of the credit goes to the members of the Show Committee who
worked all year to make our Show a success—most have been doing their jobs for
many years.
But our thanks go to all of our vendors, sponsors, volunteers, and entrants. It wouldn’t
be much of a quilt show without all of you.
At the January guild meeting I received my Show Chair’s quilt, “Snowballs ala Mod”.
Members of the show committee made the blocks, Marcia Hampton and Judy Kriehn
put the quilt together and Richard Larson quilted it. I love it and will treasure it.
As many of you know, I am moving to Minnesota in a few months. The hardest part of
this move is leaving all the friends I have met here, especially my QGD friends. I
know we have one of the best shows in the country and you won’t be able to keep me
away when March rolls around. In fact, I will continue on the show committee,
compiling the database for the postcard mailing that is done to remind people about the
show. So besides making quilts to stay warm, you know what I will be doing when
the snow flies and the temperature falls below zero.
…Marie
The 2014 Show is in the books and the beautiful raffle quilt, Red Snails in the Sunset,
has moved on to its new home with Rachael Hartman of Killeen, Texas! Rachael was
shocked when she received the call that she had won the quilt, and said she usually
Cindy Matthews, doesn't win anything. She and her mother immediately jumped in the car and drove 3
nd
2 VP—Ways and Means hours to Dallas to pick up the quilt! This was Rachel's first time to attend the Dallas
Quilt Show, and she only bought 3 tickets. She said she plans to hang the quilt in her
home and show it off because it is just so beautiful. Congratulations, Rachael!
And…many thanks and kudos to Sharry Evans and Kelly Edwards, who designed and
constructed the top, and quilter Richard Larson.

One of CFK’s recipients, Vogel Alcove, is moving into a larger building, which will
allow it to help more families. I got a sneak preview of the building this week when I
dropped off quilts (26!), and it’s beautiful! With the expanded space comes a need for
more volunteers -- so if you like pre-schoolers or can help with clerical duties, events,
etc, call Susan English, Director of Volunteers, at (972) 619-7429, or check out the
“Involved” tab at www.vogelalcove.org. If you’re not familiar with Vogel, it provides
free daycare and services to homeless children between the ages of 6 weeks and 5 years
old—a wonderful and worthy organization that QGD is happy to help!
Guild member Lynna Marie Parker died suddenly on January 9,
leaving her fabric and books to the Guild. Covers for Kids and
our Library gratefully accepted this donation.
