Contemporary Quilt Sampler With Laura Nownes
Contemporary Quilt Sampler With Laura Nownes Introduction WELCOME to my online class, Contemporary Quilt Sampler. I am delighted to share with you my passion for making quilts. If you are new to quiltmaking, my hope is that this course will teach you the necessary and important skills to help you build a solid foundation in making a quilt. With these skills you will feel confident to move forward to making many successful quilts. If you are an experienced quiltmaker, this course can be a refresher in helping to fine tune some of the basic skills. This course will consist of six lessons. Each lesson will focus on one technique and quilt block pattern. A handout will be available for you to download prior to class to assist you in preparing for the upcoming lesson. I am also putting together a Resource Library that will be available to you at any time during the course. The Resource Library will include Terminology and Information on Fabric, Cutting Tools, Pressing Tools, Threads, Sewing Machines and Basic Cutting Instructions. To assist you in completing your quilt, there will be instructional videos available for Layering and Basting, Quilting (hand and machine) and Binding. SCHEDULE Class One: Nine-Patch Blocks Class Two: Pinwheel Blocks (Half-Square Triangles) Class Three: Quarter-Square Triangles (Yankee Puzzle) Class Four: Sawtooth Star Blocks Class Five: Log Cabin Blocks Class Six: Putting it All Together – Sewing blocks together, adding sashing and borders to complete the quilt top. GETTING STARTED Here is a list of a few supplies you will need in order to be prepared for the first class. Sewing machine, in good working order. Take a few minutes to remove all the extra lint and dust from around the bobbin area. Thread, good quality 100% cotton or polyester (NOT quilting thread) in a neutral color (beige or grey) and bobbins wound with the same. Sewing machine needle – No. 12 Topstitch needle works well. Rotary cutter – 45 mm. Cutting mat - 12” x 18” or larger Acrylic rulers for cutting – 6” x 12” and 6-1/2” x 6-1/2”. Glass head pins Seam ripper Steam iron and pressing board FABRIC for quilt top: White: 1-1/2 yards (for blocks, sashings and inner border) Prints for Blocks: ¼ yard each of seven fabrics (fat quarters are ok). Outer border: 5/8 yard For best results, purchase good quality, 100% cotton quilting weight fabrics. NOTE: These fabrics will make all of the blocks in the quilt top. The amount needed for any borders, backing and binding will be discussed in class. Suggestions for purchasing fabric: When starting on a new quilt project, I find it helpful to have a starting point. Choosing fabrics can become an overwhelming process if you don’t have any direction. Select one fabric that you really like because of its colors and design. Use this one to guide you in selecting the remaining fabrics. It is not necessary to match everything exactly but instead look for a range of lights, mediums and dark colors with a variety of visual textures (plaids, stripes, dots, florals, etc.) and scales (large, medium and small prints). For best results, work with colors and designs that are comfortable and pleasing to you. Remember, this is YOUR quilt. Have fun with it. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
