“There are
encouraging signs of
recovery...”
In the present business climate even successful companies such
as ourselves have not been totally unscathed by the downturn in
consumer confidence.
While there appears to be a reported slight bounce back in high
street spending, I believe, the economy will continue to grow
throughout the coming year.
In fact, I feel bullish about 2010 prospects, as there are some
encouraging signs of recovery for companies willing to embrace
change and adapt to new initiatives to deliver their customers and
business partners greater value, services, efficiency and product
offerings.
One such example, is the Group’s recent appointment as central
England and Wales distributor for Lawrence David Trailers.
Also, as part of our business model growth plan we have
initiated the re-branding of our East Midlands Service Centre as a
dedicated all makes Truck and Trailer repair, parts and sales outlet.
In addition, we have applied for both Stretton and Walsall to
become approved VOSA, AFT. LGV MOT test facilities.
By adopting, smarter thinking, a leaner cost base, intelligent
business solutions, enhanced products and services, we will
continue to deliver beneficial savings and true value to our
customers.

VOLVO FH
Heavyweight comfort with Volvo FH16 for
Allsop Plant and Haulage
Derbyshire plant hire and earth-moving operator Allsop Plant
and Haulage has taken delivery of a new Volvo FH16-660,
plated for operation at 150 tonnes. The 6x4 tractor unit will
join the rest of the Smalley-based company’s Volvo-heavy
fleet, moving heavy plant across the UK and beyond.
Allsop Plant and Haulage’s owner David, son of founder Fred
Allsop, who set up the company in 1957 with his brothers
George and Richard - says, the FH16’s impressive power-toweight ratio and driver comfort were key factors in the decision
in maintaining Allsop’s relationship with Volvo. “We’ve been
running Volvo’s since 1995, when we got a FH16-520,” recalls
owner David Allsop. Their latest addition, Volvo FH16-660
Globetrotter XL is specified with refrigerator, microwave and
full leather upholstery. “The driver’s very impressed with it,”
David remarks. Repair and maintenance will be handled by
Hartshorne Alfreton on a two-year contract. “We have a
good relationship with them on both the sales and service
sides,” adds David. “They’re friendly people and they get the
job done!”
Keele based Hamptons (Metal Merchants) have added a
Volvo FH 2 (6x2) tractor unit to their existing fleet.

Back-up key to Hills repeat business...
Shrewsbury based Hills Transport Services bought its first Volvo
truck in the early nineties. Since then it appears to have bought
none other than Volvo, the latest, a 6x2 FH12 480 Globetrotter XL
tractor, joining the fleet earlier this year.
Managing director Gary Hill is quite happy that all ten trucks in
the fleet carry the Swedish manufacturer’s badge. He is
also more than happy with the service he gets from Hartshorne
(Shrewsbury). In fact, he reckons they are ‘superb’ and the backup similarly so.
Hartshorne (Shrewsbury) provides repair and maintenance services
for all of Hills Transport’s new Volvos. And Hill’s ensure that it gets
full value from it by using new trucks on a full shift pattern seven
days a week. The fleet, all refrigerated vehicles, operates just in
time deliveries of ingredients to food manufacturers and onward
transport of finished food products to RDCs.
Punchards Haulage
Uttoxeter based Punchards Haulage has taken delivery of a new
Volvo FH2 (6x4) are specialists in flat bed work throughout UK
and Europe and also provide crane services capable of handling
abnormal loads.
Punchards pride themselves on their highly skilled drivers and
their ability to transport almost anything, anywhere, utilising
their extensive fleet of vehicles. Punchard Haulage has recently
taken delivery of a Volvo FH 6x2 tractor unit, equipped with a
euro 480bhp engine; with14 speed manual gearbox, the GTXL
cab, includes prestige trim, full leather seats and full airflow kit
fitted to improve fuel economy.
Volvo FH joins
Saunders Recovery’s
heavy brigade...
Saunders Recovery recently took delivery of
one of the largest Volvo recovery vehicles
ever seen on UK roads.
The FH-520 is an 8x4 rigid with an added fifth axle and a wide
range of specialist equipment including a rotating crane and
an under-reach unit. The chassis was supplied by Hartshorne
Potteries, while the bodywork and equipment were installed by
Boniface Engineering.
fleet. They’re hard-working, well-built and very reliable indeed.”
The finished truck - in its distinctive bright yellow livery - is plated at
150 tonnes GTW, meaning it can tow a 110-tonne mobile crane.
Its Miller 75-tonne rotating crane features five winches – four on
its triple-extending boom and one as a drag winch.
“The Highways Agency wants the roads cleared fast,” says John,
“so with this we can right an overturned container artic’ without
having to wait for a second vehicle.”
“I believe it’s the biggest Volvo recovery vehicle built,” says owner
John Saunders of his new flagship. The basic truck is an FH-520
rigid with a 13-litre Euro-5 engine driving a manual 14-speed
splitter gearbox. Its T-ride suspension and hub reduction drive
axles have been particularly specified for LGV recovery work while
its ‘Prestige’-trim Globetrotter cab offers excellent driver comfort.
In addition to hydraulic outriggers, the FH-520 has a full
complement of working lights, light bars and chain lockers. It
also features a Maxi-Reach slimline under-reach for damage free
under-floor lift and even a walk-in workshop behind the cab, fully
stocked with tools, straps and cutting gear for rescue work.
Volvos have always been John’s first choice as a basis for heavy
recovery vehicles. “We’ve always used Volvo for the heavy stuff,”
he says. “They’re good trucks and we have quite a few on the
Established in 1989, Saunders Recovery offers a 24hr breakdown

VOLVO FM
SELF CONFESSED VOLVO MAN
Like most operators in the haulage sector, Richard Pryce of Telford
based H W Pryce & Son Ltd would welcome a return to a more
stable market - preferably, one that reflects a growing rather
than a still seemingly stalled economy. As for now, demand is
unpredictable. A self confessed ‘Volvo man’, Richard says he has
no complaints about Hartshorne. If there are problems, they are
few and far between and they are resolved quickly and amicably,
he adds.
CHARTHIRE’S VOLVO FM-440
DRAWBARS JOIN SMURFIT KAPPA
FLEET
Nottingham based fleet solutions provider Charthire has
taken delivery of three Volvo FM prime movers. The I-shiftequipped, 440hp vehicles are destined for service with
Smurfit Kappa regional paper and card recycling collection
sites.
Supplied by Hartshorne Alfreton the trucks all have day
cabs and are fitted with V. Orlandi couplings; they are
plated for operation at 40 tonnes. Charthire supplied
around 15 vehicles to the Snodland depot, including two
Volvo FE-240’s and a Volvo FE-310 drawbar.
Founded some eight years ago, Charthire Ltd. offers
contract hire, fleet management and maintenance services
UK-wide.
The company currently provides commercial vehicle
solutions – including vehicles of all sizes – to nationallyknown customers from pharmaceuticals and cosmetics
retailers to builders’ merchants. Smurfit Kappa UK is part
of Smurfit Kappa plc and is a world leader in corrugated
packaging. Its UK recycling operation has two paper mills,
reprocessing over 500,000 tonnes a year - equating to
around 12% of the UK’s recovered paper volume.
6
H W Pryce runs a fleet of 10 artics, all bar one, carrying the
Volvo badge. The latest additions, two FH12 tractors delivered
last year are covered by a two year inspection/maintenance
agreement handled by Hartshorne (Shrewsbury).
FIRST FOR SHILLITTO’S
Notts based J Shillitto (Forage) Ltd wanted a low roof cab plus a
higher powered engine for its next six wheeler. Where Shillitto’s
initial vehicle supplier couldn’t match his spec, Hartshorne could.
And on the 1st May, Philip Shillitto took delivery of their first ever
Volvo from Hartshorne, Alfreton, a 5.2m wheelbase FM 6x2 rigid
which entered front line service, distributing primarily horse and
cattle feed across central England.
Plated for operation at 26tonne gvw/44tonne gvw, the vehicle is
fitted with an overcab load deck plus a 25ft platform body, the
latter equipped with a three foot pull out extension at the rear.
“The extra deck length means I can make efficient use of the
payload weight capacity when carrying low density cargoes such
as sheep’s wool,” says Philip. “Also, when required, I can simply
couple up to the drawbar trailer to operate at up to 44tonnes.”
“The Volvo gives me the added performance I needed to provide
the increased operating flexibility I was seeking and it does so
without any fuel penalty,” he closed.
VOLVO/HARTSHORNE
COMBINATION HARD ONE
TO BEAT...
Within the last few years, Ashbourne based liquid waste and
drainage clearance specialist, Barleymans Limited have added
three Volvos to its now eight strong mixed fleet - the most recent
entering service this year.
All of them are covered by a preventive maintenance contract
handled by Hartshorne Potteries has director of the family run
firm Charles Barleyman is more than happy to sing their praises.
“Preventive maintenance works well for us and Hartshorne are
brilliant. I can’t fault them,” he says.
Once again, it seems that the Volvo/Hartshorne combination is
a hard one to beat!
And, if proof were needed, it seems that a fleet addition is in
prospect, another Volvo eight wheeler to join the two others
and a six wheeler.
So, while Charles Barleyman prefers not to venture an opinion
on what the future might hold for the national economy, he has
no complaints about how busy he is right now.
While others might have vehicles parked up, those at Barleymans
Ltd., are all out earning. Just as well, when you consider that
the bodies and high pressure water jetting tackle on each of his
trucks can cost up to a ‘cool’ quarter of a million pounds!

VOLVO FL HYBRID
REFUSE TRUCK TAKES TO
THE CITY...
After a year and a half of preliminary field testing with
excellent results, Volvo Trucks is now launching an upgrade of
the world’s first hybrid refuse truck. It is currently being put
through its paces with Veolia Environmental Services in central
London.
“With up to 30 per cent lower fuel consumption, low emissions
and a low noise level it makes this hybrid a very attractive
choice.”comments Rob Stubbs, fleet director at Veolia, London
and the UK’s leading waste management provider.
The new truck is an upgraded version of the trucks field-tested
in Stockholm and Gothenburg, Sweden over the past eighteen
months. Like these trucks, the new refuse truck is what is
known as a parallel hybrid. This means it has two separate
energy sources, one for diesel and one for electricity, which can
be used either separately or together.
The benefit of this is that each energy source can be used
where it is most fuel-efficient: the electric motor at low revs
and the diesel engine at high revs.
The new refuse truck has electric power steering, completely
new control systems and refined battery management
strategies to optimise the battery performance. Loading and
refuse compaction are completely electrically powered by
means of a plug-in compactor that is charged via the mains
electricity grid. The battery is also new, with improved reliability
and a longer lifespan.
Full-scale production of the hybrids will start in 2012 which
is somewhat later than the original plan. The delay is related
to the global financial crisis that has affected Volvo’s product
development.
WORKING FOR A BETTER ENVIRONMENT...
VOLVO TAKES FIRST STEP WITH LOW
ENTRY CAB LAUNCH
Volvo Trucks launch UK and Ireland market specific low-entry
version of their FE middleweight rigid. Designated the FE Low
Entry Cab (LEC), the new truck is aimed at the waste collection
and recycling sector – in particular, the carriage of domestic
refuse delivered direct to a bulk transfer or recycling station.
In addition to municipal applications, the FE LEC is also designed
to meet the need for ease of access of crews of specialist fire,
airport and highways vehicles - particularly those working
‘stop-start’ duty cycles such as cone trucks in roadworks.

FL-240 LPG TANKER
SPEARHEADS VOLVO’S RETURN
TO CALLOW FUELS...
Callow Fuels, the independent, Worcestershire-based oil and gas
distributor, has welcomed Volvo back to its fleet in the form of a FL240
LPG tanker supplied by Hartshorne Walsall.
The 240hp, 18-tonner features a Day cab and 9-speed manual gearbox
and was chosen for a combination of Volvo reliability and competitive
pricing, which has also led to two further vehicles being ordered.
“We used to run Volvo’s pretty much exclusively,” recalls James
Callow, a Director of the company and the son of its founder. “Price
competition sent us to other makes for a while, but now the cost
is once more at a level that makes sense for us.” Cost has been a
significant factor in the tank specification too; the 17,000 litre barrel is
a remount, reflecting the rising cost of new examples. It was supplied
by Lakeland Tankers, who also provided the digital gas meter, in-cab
thermal printer and full ADR kit.
The return of Volvo to Callow Fuels is particularly welcome, coming as
it does in the wake of very positive experiences with FL6’s. “Historically,
those Volvo’s don’t owe us much!” says James. “We’d reckon on a
service life of 10-12 years. They were like pocket battleships; they’d
run all over our territory with rarely a spanner put on them.” although
covered by a five-year contract maintenance package administered by
Hartshorne Pensnett, whose ability to provide a dedicated ADR bay was
another significant factor in Callow Fuel’s decision to choose Volvo.
Callow Fuels was founded in 1969 by Jim Callow and has grown to
become the largest independent fuel supplier in Worcestershire and
Herefordshire. The company operates a fleet of around 45 vehicles and
offers oil, LPG, tank and lubricant supplies to agriculture, industry, retail
and domestic clients.
With depots at Stourport, Hereford, Moreton-in-Marsh and Rushock,
Callow Fuels prides itself on personal service in its home territory.

proving to be beneficial to
fleet operators...
Both the Group’s ‘Euro 5+’ series and ‘Fuelwatch’ seminars,
run in conjunction with Volvo Trucks around the Group’s
dealerships, enjoyed considerable success, with almost 100
customers attending the four sessions held to date.
“We’re a long-standing user of Volvo Trucks,” says
Operations Director, Bob Cash. “We get very good service
from our local dealer - Hartshorne Walsall. The new truck’s
manoeuvrability has received particular praise, the rear-steer
axle has been especially effective for deliveries in tight yards
and urban areas. “The driver loves it!”
VOLVO FLH STILL FIRST CHOICE FOR NISA...
NISA add 14 new FLH 240 (4x2) rigid (I-sync) gearbox

their existing fleet.
The programme, originally intended to end in November, has
been extended because of customer demand, with further
sessions planned by the end of the year. Response among
customers has been extremely positive, with several already
considering follow-up action such as contracting into Volvo’s
Fuel Management Service.
Saving diesel is a big factor these days, in terms not just of
cost, but of carbon footprint. The seminar’s proved very
informative and provoked a lot of interesting debate... Most
agreed the Fuel Management Service sounds the business; To

From Hartshornes point of view, the seminars are a business

SERVICE LEVELS ON THE UP...
VOLVO UK NATIONAL MOT PASS RATES
HIT 91% FOR FIRST HALF OF 2009
According to statistics issued by VOSA, Volvo Trucks’ Dealer
Network has achieved a national UK initial pass rate for MOT
annual tests of 91.0%, for the six months to June 30th 2009.
The Volvo figures include not just Volvo trucks, but also
trailers and non-Volvo vehicles prepared and tested by the
Volvo Dealer Network.
Indeed, the pass rate for June itself is 92.1% (1.75% better
than May 2009) and reflects a rising trend in the Volvo Dealer
Network as a whole. In fact, Volvo’s Dealers outperformed
the general initial pass rate trend for the full year 2008 by
achieving a 2.97% improvement compared to the rest of the
manufacturers who recorded a 1.47% improvement over the
course of the year.
The Volvo figure of 91% compares favorably with the pass
rate of 73.9% for all manufacturers for the same period,
according to VOSA’s official figures.
Most Volvo Dealer’s are consistently returning monthly MOT
pass rates around 95%. In addition, individual depots have
achieved 100% first time pass rates. Volvo Trucks’ Managing
Director Göran Nyberg, acknowledge’s all Volvo Dealer’s such
as the Hartshorne Group are very focused on MOT pass
rates. “We are all working hard to continually improve MOT
pass rates as they affect customers’ Operator Compliance
Risk Scores (OCRS). VOSA themselves say that improving
MOT initial pass rates is a good way for an operator to
improve their OCRS.
With more designated Dealer based VOSA approved Test
facilities coming on stream, 2010 should prove even more
beneficial to operator’s. Plus its becoming more and more
evident that operator’s with dealer Preventive Maintenance
or full Contract Maintenance programmes are achieving the
optimum initial pass rate. Customers benefit from fewer
journeys to the Test station and improved vehicle uptime.
Overall, when Volvo conduct their annual customer survey,
it confirmed that our Dealers’ focus on MOT pass rates has
been a factor in significantly improving customer satisfaction
ratings across the UK, year on year.”

We understand trucks are a critical part of
your business and deserve the best possible
service care...
Straight Talking Adrian Rollinson, managing director of Alfreton based haulier,
storage and United Pallet Network member White Peak Distribution,
is an advocate of contract maintenance.
“Some tend to dismiss contract maintenance because of the
apparent high cost,” says Adrian, “but as far as I am concerned its
cost effective and the way to go. It’s a regular, budgeted sum that
covers all costs, including any ‘surprise’ repairs. It also ensures that
the fleet remains in top condition, minimising the risk of unplanned
downtime. “No operator, or indeed customer, wants to see or to
suffer the consequences of their vehicle/load being parked up on
the hard shoulder awaiting roadside assistance,” he adds.
When uptime matters Hartshorne Group acknowledge operators don’t just buy
trucks; they invest in them. So, if you’re looking for a solid
reliable Repair & Maintenance provider look no further...
we understand that a truck isn’t just a machine; it’s a critical
part of your business!
And, at a time when confidence is in short supply, we
understand this is one area where it’s absolutely vital your
investment is secure and keeps earning. Every effort is
taken to remove the unpleasant surprises that can occur
when running your trucks. And perhaps most importantly,
the majority of our maintenance packages also ensure that
vital Repair & Maintenance costs are spread evenly over the
contract term, allowing you to precisely plan the income
and expenditure of your business.
In turn, it gives you access to specialist technicians so you can
be confident your truck’s in the best possible hands.
We only fit Genuine Manufacturers Parts, so your truck’s
reliability won’t be compromised. Most of our packages also
include breakdown cover, so even if the worst happens, you’ll
know that help is never far away.

S O L U T I O N S
Truck & Trailer repairs have never been more affordable...
MARSHALLING FOR THE RECOVERY...
“In the wake of becoming the central England
main dealer for Britain’s leading trailer supplier,
Lawrence David, the Hartshorne (East Midlands)
Stretton Service Centre has been rebranded as
Truck & Trailer Solutions”
Based at Stretton (Burton on Trent), Truck &
Trailer Solutions will not only spearhead the
Group’s attack on the trailer market, it will also
drive a second new initiative - the marketing
and provision of a new generation of repair and
maintenance services for any make of van or
truck.
And there are plans for it ultimately to become
a VOSA approved ADF MOT Test facility
covering Class 5, 7 & LGV Tests.
For some time now industry pundits have
reported on the lack of alternative quailty
service providers for the “White Van Operator ‘
a terminology we would prefer not to use, but
we do acknowledge the benefits of providing
a wider customer service base in addition to
our existing large Commercial Vehicle Services.
Building on the Group’s experience, gained
from the Group’s Hartshorne Vehicle solutions
activities, where many of our customers
operate a mixed fleet of vehicles both in size
and make, the benefits from a service supplier
capable of offering a total fleet service package
are apparent to all. So not only do we see
Truck & Trailer as a rebranding exercise but a
fresh uninhibited opportunity to broaden our
customer base!

VOLVO BUS & COACH SCENE
Hartshorne PMI - a starter for
National Coach Awards ...
PMI contracts for your coaches might not be considered a cheap
option, but for Chris Evitt, managing director of Wolverhampton
based Coach Choice, it pays handsomely.
He will tell you that Hartshorne does a fine job with his Volvos,
based on the scheduled servicing. The Volvos availability for
front line service is top line, unplanned downtime is no longer a
concern and the pass rate for the annual test is good. In short,
says Chris, for me PMI is the way forward.
And that’s from a coach
company that has just scooped
the pool at the industry’s
premier event, the UK Coach &
Bus Awards. It was staged at
The Tower Hotel, London, by
Coach & Bus Week magazine.
Coach Choice took the
silverware both for Coach
Operator of the Year (Small
Fleets), and the coveted top
award, UK Coach Operator of
the Year.
The latter was based both on
20
votes from the readers of Group Travel Organiser magazine and
the result of a ‘mystery shopper’ exercise designed to test the
company’s customer friendliness.
Not to be forgotten, Coach Choice’s, Cass Winton Douglas put
the icing on the cake by being named Coach Driver of the Year
at the same event. Cass has been a PSV driver for 40years,
eight of them for Coach Choice. It is fitting that he should
receive his award this year, its the year he plans to retire.
As Chris Evitt says, Cass is a great guy, a point more than
underlined by the fact that customers booking coaches will also
specify him as their first choice driver!
Woodstones continue with an
aggressive vehicle replacement
programme...
Brighton Coach Rally –
a winner for Dudley’s Coaches.
Even though the roots of Dudley’s Coaches track back to as far
as 1938, it took until this year for the Radford (nr Inkberrow),
Worcestershire based coach operator to enter the Brighton
Coach Rally. And what a debut!!
One of the company’s coaches - a Volvo B10M with Plaxton
Excalibur body, first registered in January ’99 - took the Volvo
Trophy for the top coach supplied by Volvo Coach Sales.
Despite the doom and gloom of recession, business is
more than holding up for Kidderminster based coach
operator Woodstones Coaches Ltd.
Doubtless, running a modern, attractive looking fleet is
one of the cornerstones of the company’s success.
As potential hirers are told, none in the six strong fleet is
more than three years old – keeping the carbon footprint
low and, if required, allowing access into/through the
London Low Emission Zone without a premium on the
hire charge.
With 16 Volvos in the fleet that otherwise numbers 19, including
a minibus, its fair to say that managing director Chris Dudley
favours the Swedish marque. Also, the fact that he has only
bought used coaches for the last 20years or more, perhaps says
more about the durability of Volvo coaches than any advert
can.
Chris is quick to praise Hartshorne (Walsall). ‘They’re fantastically
helpful,’ is how he puts it, ‘not only as the supplier of all our
genuine parts but also for their flexibility in stepping up to the
oche, sometimes at short notice, to handle service and repairs
when in-house capacity is a bit pushed.’
Woodstones also believe that coach travel should be
available to all. Hence, all its coaches are wheelchair
access equipped.
If winning a coach award was not sufficient, driver Tony Clarke’s
sartorial elegance impressed the judges to the point that he/
Dudley’s left Brighton with a second, a special award – for the
smartest uniformed driver and/or courier for a medium fleet
– presented by Leisurewear Direct.
Last but not least, all the coaches are Volvo B7R/Plaxton
Profile combinations with maximum seating capacities
ranging from 49 to 70 – depending on vehicle and
whether wheelchair passengers are being carried.
Chris says that driver Tony should share as much of the glory
as any. Seems he put the effort in to bring the coach up to
top concourse trim...and still had time left to clean up on the
uniform front!!
All the coaches are covered by Volvo’s full two year
warranty, with third year drive line cover. So, any warranty
work is handled by Hartshorne at Pensnett, the
in house team looking after everything, from a smart,
modern workshop.
Woodstones, Richard Meredith will tell you, apart from
being selling/advertising tools in their own right, their
coaches command a high residual when replacement
becomes due – all good for the bottom line.
As to the future, with an ever discerning public choosing
to delve more deeply into the pedigree of the coaches they
might be booking, it appears that regardless of the nation’s
economic plight Woodstones will continue to trade and
build on its Volvo/Plaxton fleet, its solid professional
approach and its growing reputation. Suffice to say, the
company has placed its order for two replacement Volvo
B7R/Plaxton Profile coaches during 2010.

TERRY’S FH12 IS BEST IN
SHOW...
Hartshorne is proud to sponsor the Best in Show award
at the Shropshire Truck show – and doubly pleased
that, this year, the prizes went to Terry Begley in a Volvo
operated by rural suppliers, Countrywide. The FH12 460
– called Hogtrotter and emblazoned with an eye-catching
airbrushed pig – is four years old with almost half a million
km on the clock and, according to Terry, owes its victory to
a pretty rigorous cleaning and maintenance programme.
“It gets lots of TLC,” says the delighted Terry, “plenty of
washing and polishing whenever there’s free time. It’s
basically a question of keeping on top of it from day one.
Even out of show season we’ll wash the truck two or
three times a week and polish it once a fortnight.” When
showtime’s in full swing, the pace gets positively gruelling.
“At the Peterborough Truckfest, we were already at work
on it by Friday evening, then we spent 18hours on Saturday
and 15 of Sunday working on it – and not just the bits you
can see!”
28
Hogtrotter is a genuine working truck, delivering to 46
stores and countless farms across the South, so how does
Terry rate Volvo as business machines? “I love ‘em!” is
the simple answer. “The I-Shift is second to none, there’s
plenty of room and they’re tried and tested. They’re easy
to drive, too – just less stress!”
Terry, the Hogtrotter and Volvo...
winners all three!
HCR Recovery – The Hucknall based
coach and LGV recovery specialists for
Nottinghamshire – have found their new
Volvo FH as effective in competition as on
the roads. Not only is the FH-460 “ideal
for its job,” according to the company’s
owner and co-Director, it has also
enhanced HCR’s prestige.
‘Countrywide’ make clean sweep of it,
winning best in Show Volvo at both The Shropshire
Truck Show & The Peak Truck Show.

Potteries Technician John Pettitt receives
high praise from Royal Air Force Captain
C G Baddeley...
“Specialist knowledge and expertise from Hartshorne technician
John Pettitt saved the day at the Falkland Islands Joint Forces
MT Workshop. Below is a letter received by the base from RAF
Captain Baddeley of the Forward Support Squadron following
John’s good work.”
To: Warrant Officer Carr,
Re: VISIT TO FALKLAND ISLANDS BY HARTSHORNE
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your excellent
work in arranging the visit of Mr John Pettitt of Hartshorne Volvo
to the Joint Forces MT Workshop between 27 Apr - 1 May 09. As
you are aware, due to the specialised nature of the vehicles we
maintain it is necessary, on occasions, to seek additional support
from the equipment manufacturer. This proved to be the case
with the in Theatre Volvo Domestic Fire vehicle whereby specialist
diagnostic equipment and vehicle specific knowledge led to its
rectification.
Cindy sky dives 13,000ft for
Childrens Hospice...
Hartshorne (Shrewsbury) Cindy Parry takes a flying leap for charity...
Last September, Cindy travelled to North London Parachute Centre
Cambridgeshire only to find
inclement
weather
threatened
Cindy’s sponsored charity tandem
sky dive. Fortunately, the sun shone
through and she managed to board
the second and last plane of the
day from which Cindy successfully
completed a 13,000ft tandem
skydive in aid of Hope House
Childrens Hospice in Shropshire.
Hartshorne Potteries make-over...
Without your extensive knowledge of civilian agencies and in
particular the timely communication with Hartshorne Volvo, I
doubt we would have benefited from such a rapid response and
consequent repair of this critical asset.
I am also aware of the excellent work carried out by Hartshorne
Volvo to ensure that this visit was a success. In particular, I would
like to pass on my thanks to Mr Andy Bloor as point of contact
for my engineers and Mr John Pettitt, the visiting engineering
specialist. My staff who hosted Mr Pettitt’s visit have commented
on not only his excellent technical knowledge and experience,
but also more noticeably his highly professional and courteous
manner. He proved to be not only a fine ambassador for
Hartshorne Volvo but also an extremely high calibre technician of
whom his employers can be justifiably proud.
As well as my thanks to you, I would be grateful if you could
relay my appreciation to those concerned at Hartshorne Volvo.
Thank you.
Yours sincerely,
