Summit Program - ICF Summit 16
Summit Program
Welcome!
On behalf of Intelligent Community Forum and The ICF
Columbus Summit 2016 Program Committee, we invite you
to join us June 13-17, 2016 for the annual ICF Summit!
The Intelligent Communities Forum (ICF) named Columbus
“The World’s Intelligent Community of the Year for 2015”.
It is quite an honor for Columbus to join an elite group of cities
who have embraced what the ICF calls the Broadband
Economy and use smart strategies in innovation, workforce
development, digital inclusion, sustainability, and broadband
penetration to advance their economies and the quality of life
for their residents. This award further validates that all the
hard work and collaboration among our government,
academic, and business communities are paying off in
elevating Columbus to a global stage.
The 2016 Summit & Awards program will show the world why
Columbus is not only The World’s Intelligent Community of the
Year for 2015, but also the best place to live,
work and raise a family.
Sincerely,
Aladin Gohar and Moez Chaabouni

Much Smarter Than Your Average City . . .
and we can prove it! Columbus is a two-time winner
of the Intelligent Community Forum Top 7 Intelligent
Communities of the Year award and can make claims
few cities can equal. Companies such as Alliance
Data Systems, Battelle, Chemical Abstracts, IBM, The
Ohio State University and a number of other data
and research institutions, collectively, spend more
than $6 billion in research annually. Find out what
these companies have already discovered about the
2015 Intelligent Community of the Year. It would be
the smart thing to do!

Midsize and large cities are usually the hub of regional
economic areas. The more effectively metropolitan, small
city, suburbs and rural areas are integrated across
boundaries, the more prosperous and inclusive the
regional economy. Metro areas are also profoundly
connected to the global economy, and the degree of
regional integration determines how much of the region
benefits from those connections. This 90-minute tutorial
explores the opportunities, challenges and success
strategies of the world’s metropolitan Intelligent
Communities, with audience Q&A.

The global economy is not just an urban phenomenon.
The countryside is affected too, often in devastating
ways as employers relocate and rural industries
automate their operations. Rural Intelligent Communities find ways to avoid much of the downside and
seize the upside through a mix of technology, strategy
and creativity. This 90-minute tutorial explores the
impacts of globalization on the countryside and
the visionary opportunities it creates for Intelligent
Communities prepared to take advantage of them.

In a global economy, scale is a competitive
advantage. Midsize and small Intelligent Communities
build scale by creating a cooperative ecosystem that
extends across municipal and county boundaries.
A visionary approach to politics is needed to ease
fears, align motives and inspire action, as well as
share understanding of the opportunities available in
the broadband economy. How do effective leaders
bring this ecosystem into being?

Rapid gains in the availability, quality and cost of
broadband and information technology are beginning
to realize a dream launched in the Internet's earliest
days. For an ever-growing share of jobs, it is becoming
possible to work from anywhere with a robust connection. Rural areas, with their high quality of life and low
cost of living, stand to benefit by delivering what
members of the urban exodus need. Rural Intelligent
Communities are targeting this opportunity with
programs, amenities, facilities and marketing.
What have we learned about successfully
leveraging the urban exodus?

Experience Columbus Day
Free Day in Columbus
This is your free-form day in Columbus! No guides, no
meetings, no sessions, no strings attached. Experience
Columbus at your whim!
There's an energy and excitement in Columbus that's going to
hit you as soon as you arrive. Big things are happening here,
and you're invited to join in. The city is booming, and not just in
population. The Columbus Museum of Art just added a spectacular new wing, and the Scioto Mile project puts 33 acres of new
riverfront parkland in the heart of downtown.
The innovative Columbus food scene melds artisan food producers with imaginative chefs to create meals that are far greater
than the sum of their parts. Nationally acclaimed distilleries
work together with brewers, coffee roasters and high-end
cocktail bars, black box stages, music halls and dive bars to
deliver unforgettable nightlife.
Neighborhoods on all sides of Downtown Columbus are
bursting with new places to eat and shop, and artists are
shaping new areas of the city into dynamic spaces to explore.
It's time to get to know the Columbus that grew up when
you weren't looking.
