We celebrate our return to the Town Hall with Saint-Saens’ most ambitious work,
his Organ Symphony, with its thunderous ending featuring the Hall’s
magnificent organ. Also in a French vein is Ravel’s much-loved Piano Concerto,
his last large-scale work. The lyrical and haunting slow movement is framed by
two exuberant outer movements, with the last featuring dazzling virtuoso
fireworks spiced up with jazzy inflections. Piano soloist Sergio Tiempo is
described as an ‘Argentinian firebrand with edge-of-the-seat barnstorming
pianism’ – a performance not to be missed.
Charismatic conductor Edvard Tchivzhel was last here in 1997 so his return is
long overdue. Originally from Russia, he is now Music Director and Conductor
of the Greenville Symphony Orchestra in the USA.

There is a strong Russian theme to this concert. Acclaimed pianist
Nikolai Demidenko returns to display his technical mastery and penetrating
interpretative skills in one of the best-loved of all the piano concertos,
Rachmaninov’s second. From tender lyricism, luscious harmony and
sumptuous tunes to torrents of chords, this promises to be a brilliant
performance. In contrast to Rachmaninov’s romantic lyricism is the
neo-classism of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 9. Written in response to
considerable political pressure and differing from the biting satire and
grotesque elements found in many of his works, Shostakovich described
this symphony as having “a transparent, pellucid, and bright mood”.
Distinguished conductor Nicholas Braithwaite will also conduct Elgar’s
Sumsum Corda, a work with a prominent role for the Town Hall organ.

Vienna, Salzburg and Prague feature
prominently in the early history of
tonight’s works. Mozart’s Great Mass,
composed in Vienna in 1782 but
premièred in Salzburg in 1783,
has been described as having
“dark-toned and solemn, [and also]
forthright and vigorous choruses,
sumptuous solo arias, and
ensembles of ornate, operatic
radiance.” With our four soloists (all
trained in Dunedin) and Southern
Youth Choir, we celebrate City Choir
Dunedin’s 150th anniversary year.
London-based Simon Over will also
conduct Dvorák’s Symphony No. 6.
The symphony was to be premièred
by the Vienna Philharmonic in 1880,
but because of Viennese anti-Czech
sentiment it was premièred by the
Czech Philharmonic Orchestra in
1881. The work perfectly balances
Czech folk sentiment and the
classical symphony structure,
and some consider it Dvorák’s
orchestral masterpiece.

Handel’s Harp Concerto (soloist Helen Webby is Christchurch
Symphony Orchestra’s Principal Harp) was originally incidental
music for an opera, but is now immensely popular as both harp
and organ concertos. Ravel was commissioned to compose
Introduction and Allegro to display the expressive range of the
then-new double-action pedal harp, and the work delicately
explores the colours of the harp, flute, clarinet and strings.
Gareth Farr describes Waipoua as “a recollection of a memorable trip to the Waipoua
State Forest ... its healing air, cool green light, delicate echoing sounds, and the
overwhelming sight of Tane-Mahuta”. May is New Zealand Music Month.
Mozart’s elegant Haffner Symphony and Beethoven’s powerful Symphony No. 4
round off the programme conducted by Melbourne-based conductor Brett Kelly.

Aucklander Ashley Brown, who studied at Canterbury
and Yale Universities, is currently cellist in the NZTrio, and
also pursues a soloist’s career. His “full-blooded lyricism
... an irresistible force” will be on display in Haydn’s Cello
Concerto, with the slow movement written to showcase
the cello’s beautiful tone.
Of Hamish McKeich’s performance with the Sinfonia last year, the ODT reviewer
commented: “This was a truly exciting concert under McKeich’s fresh and subtly
energetic leadership”. He will also conduct Mozart’s final symphony, thought to
be the summit of Mozart’s orchestral work, written at extraordinary speed along
with two other symphonies – all in two months. The concert opens with Bach’s
Orchestra Suite No. 4 which ranges from its majestic Overture, the graceful
Gavotte to its joyful Rejouissance.

will be the Dunedin Town Hall and the King’s and Queen’s
Performing Arts Centre.

We’re back in the newly-refurbished Town Hall! To ensure all three
of our 2013 International Series concerts are in the Town Hall, this
Series has a later-than-usual start. A return to the Hall means a
return to our Town Hall seating configuration. The good news for
2011 Town Hall subscribers is that they will retain the right to renew
their 2011 seats for 2013.

Flexi-Tickets ~ pick and mix
Flexi-Tickets are easy to book! A Flexi-Ticket allows you
to attend any three separate concerts selected from our
International and Matinee Series. Once you have received
your Flexi-Ticket from the Sinfonia, you must reserve seats for
your chosen concerts by presenting your Flexi-Ticket at the
Regent Theatre Box Office. These bookings can be made
from Tuesday 23 April onwards, the start of the priority
booking period. (Public sales open on Monday 29 April.)

Pre-Concert Talks
These compelling introductions to our International Series concerts
are also delivered by the same by University of Otago Department
of Music lecturers. Time and Dates: 7.10 – 7.30 pm, Town Hall
complex, immediately before the Saturday evening performances.
Free to concert-goers.
The Friends of the Southern Sinfonia support the activities of the
orchestra by hosting post-concert suppers and chamber music
concerts, offering the opportunity to attend a rehearsal, and to meet
guest artists. Social events are organised to help fund, for example,
the purchase and maintenance of equipment and support various
other Southern Sinfonia projects. Please use the application form in the
Friends brochure to become a member of the Friends of the Sinfonia.
