What's New for 2013
The top-of-the-line Limited trim level debuts for 2013. The EX Turbo trim has been
discontinued.
Introduction
Family sedans should not look this good. This would be the conventional wisdom, anyway. But
the 2013 Kia Optima does not follow conventional wisdom. Its styling and interior design are not
only sleek, sophisticated and timelessly handsome for a family sedan, but also impressive for any
car, period. Driving an Optima down a crowded street draws double-takes from bystanders and
then inevitable squinting as they attempt to identify the badge on its tail. A look of confusion
usually follows as the answer turns out to be "Kia."
Behind the pretty face is a well-rounded midsize sedan with a long list of positive attributes. It
starts under the hood with a choice of four-cylinder engines (one is turbocharged) that produce
exceptional power and fuel efficiency. There's even a Hybrid model.
As with any Kia model, the Optima sedan seems to give you as many features for your money as
possible. Even the base LX model, for instance, comes standard with items such as alloy wheels,
cruise control, Bluetooth and an iPod/USB audio interface. The Optima can also be had with
sophisticated features like ventilated front seats and a panoramic sunroof -- items unavailable on
most competitors. A long warranty is another dollars-and-sense attribute.
Of course, the Optima isn't perfect. Headroom might be an issue for some passengers, and the
cabin in general is less spacious than the Honda Accord and Volkswagen Passat. Also be mindful
that your mileage is likely to vary from Kia's lofty EPA estimates. Overall, though, the 2013 Kia
Optima is a great family sedan choice that boasts equal parts style and sensibility. The
mechanically related 2013 Hyundai Sonata pulls off a similar trick, and we suspect the eyecatching new 2013 Ford Fusion is likely to as well. However, if you're looking to go beyond
conventional wisdom -- as well as the conventional family sedan -- the 2013 Kia Optima is a
great place to start.
Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options
The 2013 Kia Optima midsize sedan is available in four trim levels: LX, EX, SX and SX
Limited. There is a single trim for the Optima Hybrid.
The LX comes standard with 16-inch alloy wheels, foglamps, full power accessories, keyless
entry, cruise control, air-conditioning, a height-adjustable driver seat, a tilt-and-telescoping
steering wheel, Bluetooth phone connectivity and a six-speaker sound system with a CD player,
satellite radio, an auxiliary audio jack and an iPod/USB audio interface. The LX Convenience
package adds an eight-way power driver seat, driver lumbar adjustment and an auto-dimming
rearview mirror.
The EX includes the Convenience package items and adds 17-inch wheels, keyless
ignition/entry, dual-zone automatic climate control, rear air vents, leather upholstery, a leatherwrapped steering wheel and shifter, upgraded dash trim and floor mats.
The SX adds a turbocharged engine, 18-inch wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, unique exterior
and interior styling elements, auto-leveling xenon headlights, steering-wheel-mounted
transmission paddle shifters, upgraded gauges and cloth/leather upholstery.
Every trim is eligible for the Technology package, which adds a navigation system, a
touchscreen interface, a rearview camera, real-time traffic and HD radio. The LX version also
gets dual-zone climate control and an eight-speaker Infinity sound system. You can get the
Infinity system as part of either the EX Premium or SX Premium Touring package, which also
include a panoramic sunroof, power-folding mirrors, the rearview camera and HD radio, a fourway power passenger seat, driver memory functions, heated and ventilated front seats, heated
rear seats, a heated steering wheel and the Uvo voice-activated phone and media player interface
(deleted with navigation system).
All of the above comes standard on the SX Limited with the exception of Uvo, which is not
available. Additional standard items include 18-inch chrome wheels, red-painted brake calipers,
additional chrome trim, LED running lamps, an electronic parking brake, a first aid kit and
upgraded leather upholstery.
The Optima Hybrid is equipped similarly to the EX, but it lacks the Convenience package items
and includes unique 16-inch alloy wheels, keyless ignition/entry, a rearview camera and cloth
upholstery. The Hybrid Convenience package adds the eight-way power driver seat and Uvo.
The Hybrid Premium Technology package essentially adds all of the options available on the
EX.
Powertrains and Performance
Every 2013 Kia Optima is front-wheel drive. The LX and EX come with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder
engine that produces 200 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. In California-emissions
states, this engine has a Super Ultra Low Emissions rating (versus Ultra-Low elsewhere), and it
has a lower power output of 192 hp and 181 lb-ft. A six-speed manual transmission is standard
on the LX, with a six-speed automatic being optional. The automatic comes standard on the EX.
In Edmunds performance testing, a loaded Optima EX in SULEV form went from zero to 60
mph in 8.9 seconds, which is average for the class. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 24 mpg
city/35 mpg highway and 28 mpg combined regardless of transmission.
The SX trims are powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 274 hp and
269 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard. In Edmunds testing, the SX
went from zero to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds, which is an average time for a family sedan of similar
power. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 22/34/26, which is theoretically superb, but we struggled
to meet those numbers in the course of a year-long test of the Optima SX.
The Kia Optima Hybrid is powered by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine paired with an
electric motor and a six-speed automatic transmission. Combined power output peaks at 206 hp
and 195 lb-ft of torque. Acceleration from zero to 60 mph requires 8.4 seconds, which is
reasonably quick for a hybrid. The EPA estimates the Optima Hybrid's fuel economy at 34/39/36
mpg; however, in extensive real-world testing we've found the Hybrid falls short of those
numbers.
Safety
Standard safety features on the 2013 Kia Optima include four-wheel antilock disc brakes,
traction and stability control, side airbags, side curtain airbags and hill start assist. A rearview
camera is optional.
In Edmunds brake testing, an Optima EX came to a stop from 60 mph in 121 feet, which is
average for the class. The SX and Hybrid took a bit longer but were still acceptable.
In government crash tests, the Optima earned a top five-star rating for overall safety
performance, with five stars awarded for both overall frontal and side-impact tests. The
Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the Optima a top score of "Good" in frontal-offset,
side-impact and roof strength tests.
Interior Design and Special Features
First impressions of the 2013 Kia Optima's interior are exceptionally favorable. Where most
other family sedans in this segment fall somewhere between sedate and bland, the Optima has a
distinct European flair. That should come as no surprise when you consider that Kia's chief
designer used to work for Audi. While the Kia's interior isn't as sumptuous as an Audi's, there's
an abundance of soft-touch materials, and any hard plastics are at least well textured.
Kia's Uvo (pronounced "yoo-voh") electronics interface system is now available on all but the
base LX trims and those cars not equipped with the navigation system. Similar to Ford's Sync
system (both are powered by Microsoft), Uvo provides voice control of cell phones and MP3
players as well as other services such as turn-by-turn navigation. In our limited testing of Uvo,
we found it to work quite well. For those cars with navigation, you get a touchscreen interface
that's easy to use for both navigation and operating the stereo alike.
The Optima has a fairly spacious cabin, with comfortable seats and a useful amount of legroom
front and rear. Headroom (particularly in back) is a bit tight due to the car's rakish, coupelike
roof line. Taller folks should definitely think twice about the optional panoramic sunroof, as it
further decreases headroom. The Optima's 15.4 cubic feet of trunk space is about average for its
class.
Driving Impressions
The 2013 Kia Optima rides comfortably without isolating you from the environment, although
the numb steering with its artificially high effort is less praiseworthy. The overall driving
experience is certainly pleasant and better than average for the segment. The SX is sportier,
though some may find its ride to be firm.
Both of the regular four-cylinder engines are impressive. They produce best-in-class power and
are paired with responsive and smooth-shifting transmissions. The potential for truly impressive
fuel economy is an ample slab of icing on the cake.
Less impressive is the Optima Hybrid. Its electric motor makes accelerating from a dead stop a
smooth affair, and at highway cruising speeds the electric motor can aid with quick bursts of
acceleration that make the engine almost feel turbocharged. However, in low-speed driving or
quickly changing traffic conditions, the hybrid shudders and lurches while deciding which gear it
wants. Meanwhile, the engagement of the regenerative braking system is noticeably unrefined.

Review
The Optima EX sedan is an amazing value automobile that I cannot still believe that this vehicle
can be built for the cost! Great style; excellent interior design; dash assembly perfectly fit and
easy to read; great leg room in rear and front; superior fit and finish for a mid sized sedan. Quiet
ride-Yes-acceleration of a V6 in an in-line 4 YES! Changed oil to synthetic. I would highly
recommend as one of "the" best in its' class!
Favorite Features
Dashboard layout-Excellent Steering wheel controls - great and lit too! Creature features aplenty
for the cost. Exterior styling-Classic and will last as opposed to Sonata. Leather upholstery is
exceptional in this class.
Suggested Improvements
Needs a "real spare tire". Better "passenger seat" adjustments. Rear view from drivers
perspective needs improvement. Fold down Rear seating for more trunk space when needed.

I've only owned the car for 5 days. From this short time I've ascertained 2 things: - Plenty of
Luxury for the Price - Ride is smooth and quiet
Favorite Features
I opted for the the SX L, which is the limited edition that has a few aesthetic upgrades. I can't
comment on my "favorite" feature, it's the whole ensemble as a package that impresses me. The
ride is phenominal, the power in the turbo more than adequate, and the body style has drawn
comments from strangers.
Suggested Improvements
The ability to lower the windows with the keyless remote.

First Owner
When the first owner(s) obtains a title from a Department of Motor Vehicles as proof of ownership.
Ownership History
CARFAX defines an owner as an individual or business that possesses and uses a vehicle. Not all title transactions represent
changes in ownership. To provide estimated number of owners, CARFAX proprietary technology analyzes all the events in a vehicle
history. Estimated ownership is available for vehicles manufactured after 1991 and titled solely in the US including Puerto Rico.
Dealers sometimes opt to take ownership of a vehicle and are required to in the following states: Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey,
Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and South Dakota. Please consider this as you review a vehicle's estimated ownership history.
Title Issued
A state issues a title to provide a vehicle owner with proof of ownership. Each title has a unique number. Each title or registration
record on a CARFAX report does not necessarily indicate a change in ownership. In Canada, a registration and bill of sale are used

VROOM! A Heart For Kids and The Community.
I’m thrilled to have been asked to be a model in the Assistance League of San Bernardino’s
upcoming Headdress Ball. First, because it’s a fun show and my amazing choreographer
(Randy) has put together a very fun number! Secondly, the show raises money for uninsured children (5-18) to
receive dental care and get out of pain.
I’m especially thrilled to highlight my headdress sponsor: Toyota & Scion of San Bernardino, because the
theme is Route 66: Life’s Highway. The owner, Mr. Cliff Cummings is very philanthropic.
Besides supporting the Dr. Earl R Crane Children’s Dental Clinic, he has provided assistance to numerous other
non-profit organizations. He really has a heart for kids, and also supports Santa Claus Inc. They have also
sponsored Mr. Cardinal, athletic programs, and provided sponsorships. He recently challenged the CSUSB
students to make Scion & Toyota commercials, with the winning teams receiving $2,000 and their commercial
aired.
He does many quiet things too. He heard about a child whose bike was stolen, and replaced it. There was a
lady in her 70′s (who was also ill), and her moving Christmas display was stolen from her front lawn. The
Cummings replaced that too. I think he and his wife find a need and fill it.
As a supporter of public safety, he remembers the fallen deputies and military members, and has donated
tickets and boxes for sporting events to charity.
He realizes there are things you do that are good for business and things you do because the are good. When
the economy was bad a few years ago, local residents supported his businesses, and he likes to return the
support of a community that got them through a difficult economic time. The 2011 Tsunami wiped out the
Toyota and Suburu plant, and when he didn’t have inventory, the local residents waited.
In 2012 the city of San Bernardino declared bankruptcy and the dealership is continuing to feel the support
from residents who are buying locally and help the city moving forward.
People – his customers understand.
Mr. Cummings said he has been very fortunate in all levels with different projects and people who needed
help – not a hand out – but help past a rough patch. Interestingly he probably sees 150 hockey games a year,
because he sponsors kids to play youth hockey.
The Cummings have also passed their philanthropic nature down to their children. One son is an Eagle Scout,
who recently rebuilt a room at First Presbyterian Church, that was touched for 30 years. He did the
fundraising, organized work crews, and the materials purchases and the church is now using it daily.
