KHS HIGHLIGHTER
Vol. 15 No. 3
Principal's
Column
Students of Kennett High School:
The intent of this Principal's
Column is to commend you on
your behavior at the most recent
athletic contests against our neighborhood rival, Unionville High
School. Your behavior was a model
of decorum, for which I commend
you! As your principal, I am
extremely proud of you for portraying our school, staff and community in such a positive manner.
Having been part of a fierce
rivalry as a player, coach, teacher,
and administrator, I can attest
to the value of competition with
neighboring schools. If handled
appropriately, it is a terrific opportunity to build school spirit. At
both the basketball doubleheader
and the wrestling match, you exceeded expectations and continued
to maintain a high level of integrity while fostering this positive
rivalry. Thus, our school is a better
place as a result of your tremendous and POSITIVE school spirit.
As we move into the next semester, I encourage you to be mindful of
the need to continue demonstrating
that same KENNETT PRIDE and
EXCELLENCE in the classroom.
You are capable of competing on
any stage, with anyone. Never let
an opportunity to excel pass you by.
Therefore I implore you to continue
pursuing your dreams by building
a solid foundation here at Kennett
High School. TODAY’S DREAMS
ARE TOMORROW’S REALITIES THROUGH HARD WORK!
GO BLUE DEMONS!!!!
Winter 2008
Good Morning, KHS!
Mr. Frank Vanderslice and Senior Justin
Lobb check out the lighting for the morning show.
Cates Named
to All-America
Team
Senior R. David Cates has been
named to the 2007 NSCAA/adidas Boys
High School Scholar All-America Team.
Dave is one of 35 players identified for the honor and is one of only
eleven defenders selected. He is the
only player from Pennsylvania who
earned the distinction, according to a
press release from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Dave was nominated for the honor
by his coach, Mr. Peter Dicce. Mr.
Jeff Thomas, Athletic Director, noted,
"This honor for David is tremendous
for him as well as for KHS, as we
always stress the importance of the
'Student-Athlete,' with the 'Student'
being the 1st priority. David exemplifies the 'Student-Athletes' we have here
at KHS, of whom we are all proud."
Dave is a member of the National Honor Society, an AP Scholar
with Distinction, and is part of numerous clubs and activities. He is
the son of Sarah Cates and Richard Cates, both of Landenberg.
A luncheon honoring the team was
held January 24 during the NSCAA
convention in Baltimore, Maryland.
“Good Morning and welcome to this edition of KTV! I’m your host Justin Lobb.”
This is the greeting that each
homeroom has heard over the television
every Friday morning on Channel 5.
K-TV is Kennett’s TV magazine show
produced by the students in the Video
Production class. The students go onlocation with video cameras, record
scenes, and then edit these clips using
non-linear video software. Each show
runs about six minutes in length. On a
recent episode the students recorded
scenes of the art projects being created
in the art classes. They took shots of
the art students working in their studios
and interviewed one of the art teachers. Student producers Cam Starr,
Katie Trexler, and Dave Eckel then
edited the scenes to match the narration.
Mr. Frank Vanderslice, the Video
Production teacher, sees K-TV as
a great learning experience for his
students. “The students are using
all of their technical skills to create
media which will be viewed by the
entire student body. If they make a
mistake, everyone will see it. They’ve
learned that producing videos takes
a lot of time, skill, and patience”.
Other segments produced thus
far this season included segments
on the senior play, the holiday concert, food and nutrition, and sports.
Apple's Final Cut Pro, a professional editing software, is being
used to edit the productions. About
the software Mr. Vanderslice says,
"This is used by pros in Hollywood to edit major motion pictures."
Most recently, the Video Production
team has joined the Morning Announcement crew to produce a daily live morning show. Students can now see and hear
the announcements in their homerooms.
Homerooms tune in each day at 7:45.

Student Council
Warms Up
Through a community effort,
Student Council collected five large
wardrobe-size boxes full of coats. The
student group was helped by Kennett
Square's own Harrington's Coffee
Shop and Talula's Table, and the New Garden Dunkin'
Donuts, all of whom exchanged a cup of coffee for a donated coat when the coat was dropped off at their stores.
The coats were donated to Mision Santa Maria. The
Student Council advisor is Ms. Lisa Teixeira. Spearheading the drive was junior Nicole Pawloski (2nd Vice
President) who was assisted by fellow officers Dave Cates,
Ruben Gaytan, Gab Mendiola and Elizabeth Witcher.
CORRECTING THE RECORD
In the last HIGHLIGHTER,
Jordan McClane's name was
inadvertently omitted from the
list of graduates who achieved
AP Scholar with Distinction
status. Jordan McClane was
among the 15 who garnered
this honor by earning an average
grade of at least 3.5 on all AP
examinations taken, and grades
of 3 or higher on five or more of
these. The editor regrets the error.
Kennett Breaks
Blood Drive Record AGAIN
Just before the holidays and in
time for the typical heavy blood demand period, Kennett High School
collected a school record 77 pints of
blood for the American Red Cross.
In a follow-up e-mail to Dr. Alicia
Tamargo, the advisor to the Kennett
Chapter of the National Honor Society,
Jennifer Graham, American Red Cross
Account Manager, said, "We had a
very successful day – of course – at
Kennett High School. We had a total of
92 presenting donors and we were able
to collect 77 productive pints; those 77
pints will go on to touch the lives of
over 231 area hospital patients. During the holiday time frame, donations
tend to dip as many people are getting
ready for the season; thank you, the
NHS, and Kennett High School for
your continued support and commitment, especially during a busy time."
O rg a n i z e d b y t h e N a t i o n a l
Honor Society and co-chaired by
NHS members Deema Dabbagh,
Aubrey Eason, Tori Emmons and
Verena Woloson, the effort brought
donations from students and staff.
Ceramics Sale
Benefits Community
For the past several years, students from Mr. John Griffith’s
Ceramics classes have been creating, donating and selling their
work to benefit those in need. This year, despite some equipment
issues, students had sufficient products to raised $655 through
the sale of vases, plates, cups, pots, and works of whimsy.
The proceeds from this year’s sale benefited patients staying
at A.I. DuPont Hospital for Children ($330 for presents for the
children) and Kennett Area Community Service ($325).
Students who helped were Erin McQuaide, Maude Michel, Christie Irwin, Miles Fricker, Andrea Melchior, Ariel
Jordan, Melanie Kolb, and Dana Green.

Answers the Challenge
The Academic Competition
Team qualified to participate in the
Championship Tournament. The
Varsity finished in 8th place in
the league of 16 teams and played
Unionville and West Chester Henderson in the semifinals on February 7.
The Junior Varsity finished
in 4th place and missed making the championship round
by just one question (5 points).
During the regular season Varsity has had two 1st place finishes,
one second, and one third while
the JV had two 1st place finishes and two second. The team is
coached by Mr. Robert Socash.
Hermanitas Members
Hosted by Exelon
The Women's Network of
Exelon Generation spearheaded
by Sheree Petrone and the Exelon
Power Team, invited members of
the Hermanitas Program to "The
Power of Women" luncheon, January 31, at the Mendenhall Inn.
The mission of Women's Network of Exelon Generation is to attract, retain and advance the women
of Exelon Generation through an organization which educates, engages
and energizes. The luncheon featured Billi Lee, international speaker,
author and columnist. She hopes
to inspire women to make savvy
choices both at work and at home.
Attending were Ana Lemus, Maribel Hernandez, Beatriz Castano,
Maria (Charito) Ayllon, Paulina
Castaneda, Angelica Baez, and
Nereida Flores.
According to program coordinator Loretta Perna, "Exelon Generation has been a strong
supporter of Las Hermanitas, an
activity offered through the Migrant Education Program. Exelon recognizes them for all of the
work they do in the community."
KHS Varsity (Maddie Williams, Tim Bruhn,
Dave Cates and Matt Samples) and JV (Alec
Lessner, Elizabeth Witcher, Anthony Shelton and
Ryan Poorani) compete.
Music Notes
Several students are participating
in a pilot program that offers an on-line
college course in Chinese. The program is supported by a grant. Students
log on for the course three nights per
week and complete their assignments
independently. The initial cost of the
course was $50 with that cost returned
after successful completion of course
requirements.
Students enrolled in the Chinese
class are Jose Alba, Genevieve Barrett, Diego Bernal, Ruben Gaytan, Marco Luna, Stephen Ogram,
Richard Ozdowy, Robert Ozdowy,
Katherine (Raven) Porter, Kiah Sundermeir, Sandy Tapia, Erin Vining,
and Maddie Williams.
The program is coordinated by
World Languages Department Chairperson Irene Meredith. It is hoped
that a second level will be available
next year.
Seniors R.O.C. Out
The Kennett High School music
faculty and staff will present a special
program of music to dedicate the new
Steinway Grand Piano. This dedicatory
recital will take place in the KHS auditorium on Tuesday, March 25, at 7:30 p.m.
The concert will feature solos and
ensemble music that will highlight
the piano. Faculty and staff members performing will include Martin
Beech, Robert Hoch, Anton Romano, Eric Rutledge, Catherine Soukup and guest pianist Donna Beech.
The purchase of the new Steinway was made possible by a generous
grant from the Longwood Foundation. The new grand piano was first
used in performance at the Winter
Holiday Concert on December 17.
A grand piano is indispensable to
a quality music program. Instruments
like this are an investment for many
years. The grand piano will be used
by generations of Kennett students.
In a pilot program designed to partner high school students with elementary
students in a mentoring capacity, offer
students an opportunity to give back to
the school and community, and enhance
the marketability of students as 21st
Century learners, several KHS seniors
are part of the Reach Out Committee.
According to Assistant Principal
Tomorrow Jenkins, "I created the
program as an option for students who
wanted more exposure, more opportunities, more freedom, and less time
in study hall. I believe that students
need all types of experiences in order
to be prepared for the 21st century and
what better experience than to be a role
model and help shape the minds of
young children. Participants get a small
taste of what its like to be an educator.
I hope to expand the program into all
aspects of the community one day. My
selfish goal is for some participants to
aspire to the education field. Maybe
they will remember the experience
and make an early decision to teach."

Local Scholarships
This is advanced notice of the availability of local scholarships and awards. An application will be mailed in April to every
senior who has applied to any post-high school institution. All awards will be announced at graduation. The one-page application is easy to complete. A copy of the student’s financial aid letter from the school he or she expects to attend must
be attached. General Scholarships
Any national or business related scholarships arriving in the Guidance Office will be posted under the Guidance link on
the KHS Web page http://khs.kcsd.org. Students are encouraged to investigate this site and review it frequently to check
for updates. Most of these scholarships have Web sites and the applications can be downloaded. Scholarships requiring a
transcript and/or a counselor portion should be given to the Guidance Office at least a week before the deadline. A signed
release form and a stamped addressed envelope must also be attached. NOTE: If a Web site is not given, the scholarship
information will be available in the Guidance Office.
Course Selection Materials
The course selection process for 2008-09 is under way. Educational Planning Guides are distributed to students in February. Please use this booklet as your resource for descriptions, prerequisites and sequences of all courses offered at Kennett High
School. To guide you in making decisions about next year’s classes, teachers will make their recommendations based on the
student’s achievement, class performance and their knowledge of course expectations. These recommendations are especially
important in sequential subject areas such as English, mathematics and world languages. Teacher recommendations are required
for enrollment in all Honors and Advanced Placement level courses. Counselors will meet with students to review elective
choices and graduation requirements. Students’ course requests will then be entered into the school’s computer and a printout of
your individual student’s course requests for next year will be mailed home during the second semester. An actual draft of your
student’s schedule for the 2008-09 school year will be mailed home at the end of July and there will be an additional opportunity to make revisions at that time. As always, guidance counselors are available to discuss your student’s educational plan.
(continued on next page)
NOTES from the Guidance Department
Driver’s Education
(continued)
Driver’s education is not required in Pennsylvania to obtain a driver’s permit or license; however, some insurance companies
offer a discount for those drivers who have completed a certified driver’s education program. Driver’s education is a two
part program: the theory portion, which consists of 30 class hours of instruction, and the supervised driving portion, which
consists of 6 hours of actual behind-the-wheel practice. Upon completion of both parts of driver education, students are
issued a certificate stating that they have fulfilled the course requirements. The Chester County Intermediate Unit provides
Driver’s Education courses and students may register for this course by completing a form available in the high school
main office. The Intermediate Unit phone number is 484-237-5055. Classes are tentatively scheduled to be conducted after
school, in the evening or on Saturdays either at Kennett High School or at Avon Grove High School.
Summer Programs
Are you looking for a summer program of any type? Information about a variety of programs is available in the Guidance
Office. Lengths of programs vary from one to eight weeks; costs vary from nominal to expensive; some have scholarships.
If you are looking for something special, something different for your son or daughter to do this year, come to the Guidance
Office at your convenience and browse through the folder.
Working Papers
Students who are 14 to 18 years of age who seek employment in Pennsylvania must have working papers issued to be legally
employed. There are restrictions as to the length and type of jobs for which minors may be hired. Without working papers
on file, employers could be fined and insurance questions could arise should an injury occur on the job. Because each state
has different laws, working papers are issued by the state in which the job is located. Kennett High School can issue working papers only for jobs in Pennsylvania. Applications for working permits are issued through the Guidance Office.
Since working papers are a legal document, we must have on file a copy of a birth certificate, baptismal certificate
or passport for proof of age. For 14 and 15 year olds, a job-specific working paper will be issued once the student
has been promised a job. Parents must sign the working paper application form in person in the Guidance Office. The
student is to complete an application for a working permit by securing signatures of the employer and physician.
The completed form is returned to the Guidance Office and the working permit is mailed to the employer or hand
carried by the student to the employer. The job-specific working paper is valid for the duration of that employment.
Should the student change jobs, a new working permit must be issued. Students who are 16 or 17 may secure transferable working permits. Parents must sign the working paper application form in the Guidance Office. The student is to
complete the application for the transferable working permit by securing signatures of the employer and physician.
The completed form is returned to the Guidance Office and a transferable work permit is given to the student. If a
student changes jobs, the permit is still valid.
VISIT THE NEW AND IMPROVED GUIDANCE WEB SITE!
All students and parents are invited to visit the new and improved guidance web site on the high school’s Web site at
http://khs.kcsd.org for special news and announcements as well as information about scholarships, applying to colleges,
scheduling and more. Seniors should be sure to check the scholarships section on a regular basis. Scholarship information
is updated frequently. Most scholarship applications are time sensitive so students must be sure to keep track of scholarship deadlines.
