WINTER TOURISM IN BULGARIA
Bulgaria offers numerous mountain ranges, most of which are located in the
southern region. This extremely mountainous country has an average altitude
of more than 450 m. Eight Bulgarian mountains tower well over 2000 m above
sea level, each of them with its own character and particular beauty. Five of
the largest rivers in the Balkan region start in the Bulgarian mountains. This is
a kingdom of soaring eagles, giant rocks and beautiful lakes.
The various mountain ranges offer numerous ski resorts and guesthouses in the
mountain villages, mountain hotels, lodges and huts. There is also a year round
mountain rescue-service, modern skiing facilities and well-marked trails that
make skiing, hiking and number of outdoor activities possible all year long.
During the winter Pirin, Rila, Rhodopes and Vitosha are excellent for skiing, ski
mountaineering and snowshoeing. Caving, rock-climbing, as well as paragliding
and rafting are all possible here as well.
Bulgaria makes an instant impression with its well-preserved natural
environment. It has a fascinating natural diversity of mountains, rivers and
valleys, caves and rocks, canyons and waterfalls. Equally impressive is the
biological diversity, which adds to the unique character of these lands.
The mountain destinations have grown in popularity substantially in recent
years, the most successful one being at Bansko, the other two main Skiing
resorts being Borovets and Pamporovo. Skiing is also available in Sofia on
Vitosha Mountain.

BANSKO
Bansko is Bulgaria's # 1 ski resort, having the best and most modern ski centre of all Bulgarian ski
resorts. During the recent years a multi-million euros investment in a brand new skiing area has been
made by Yulen, the company which has the licence to run the skiing area of the resort. Bansko has the
best snow record and the longest ski season (15 Dec - 15 May) of all Bulgarian ski resorts. During the
last couple of years this resort is under a massive investment process with new hotels and resort
facilities being under construction. A brand new resort area with super luxury hotels and holiday
apartments is being developed just opposite the Gondola lift, which also makes Bansko the resort with
the best hotels.
One of the newest Bulgarian winter resorts, Bansko provides an interesting combination between the
virgin nature of Pirin Mountain and the atmosphere of the ancient Bulgarian town. The town of Bansko
is situated in Southwestern Bulgaria (160 km south of Sofia), at the foothills of one of the most
beautiful Bulgarian mountains - Pirin, which is a national preserve, included in the 'world natural
heritage' list. Ski resort of national significance, much visited also in summer as a starting point for
excursions in the mountain. Surrounded by the Pirin, Rila and Rhodopi mountains, Bansko is a climatic
mountain resort with a short hot summer and long mild winter. The average temperature during
January, the coldest month, is - 1.9°C. Snow falls are abundant, providing a constant winter snow cover
up to 2 m thick. The skiing season along the Pirin slopes starts in the middle of December and ends in
mid-April.
The winter resort is located just above the colourful town of Bansko 12 km into the picturesque Pirin
Mountain. The perfectly prepared and efficiently secured ski runs are stretched over 70 km. 25 km of
modern high-capacity lift infrastructure stands for comfort and minimal waiting times. In addition,
the fans of extreme winter sports will enjoy the fun park and the half pipe that will cause them an
enormous adrenaline rush while boosting the latest tricks in front of an enthusiastic crowd.
No one has to bother about not having the right ski or board equipment on arrival – the wardrobes
located at the lower and upper Gondola lift stations are best equipped with everything ski and
snowboard fans may need - 3500 pairs of ski and more than 670 boards of all sizes.
A number of cozy, dining establishments and ski-bars find themselves around the Bansko ski tracks,
offering the tasty local cuisine along with fresh drinks. This would be a perfect place for basking in
the sun.
Enjoy every one of the total of 70 km of perfectly prepared and efficiently secured ski runs.
Difficulty scale distribution is as followed: 30% Beginners, 45% Advanced and 35% Expert.
100% of the ski runs are covered by snow cannons, which guarantee sufficient snow coverage from
December to May.

BOROVETS
Borovets is the oldest and the biggest mountain resort in Bulgaria. Situated at 1350 m.
above sea level on the northern slopes of Rila Mountain among age-old pinewoods. Borovets is
located at the foot of peak Moussala (2925 m.) - the highest one on Balkan Peninsula.
Borovets is easily accessible, being at a distance of 74 km from Sofia and 126 km from
Plovdiv. Established at the end of the 19th century as a hunting place for the Bulgarian king,
Borovets gradually developed into a modern ski resort of high class and luxury hotels, hautecuisine restaurants and varied leisure-time entertainment opportunities besides an excellent
network of ski runs and lifts along the slopes of the Rila Mountain.
The winter in the resort is mild and snowy. The average temperature in January - the
coldest month is about 4.8°C. The ski season usually spans from mid-December till April.The
resort offers excellent conditions for winter sports: alpine skiing, snowboarding and cross
country. The alpine runs of Borovets offer excellent conditions for snowboarding.
The resort is a regular host of various winter sports competitions. The resort has twice
hosted World Cup Alpine skiing rounds, while its biathlon track is one of the best in the
world. The slopes have a permanent snow cover, more than a meter and a half thick, from
November to May. The ski runs of various difficulties are suitable for beginners,
intermediate, advanced or expert skiers.
The excellent equipment for ski sports attracts thousands of mountain lovers from Bulgaria
and from foreign countries. They can use the 45 kilometers various in difficulty and length
ski pistes grouped in three regions: Sitnqkovo – Martinovi Baraki – pistes; Markudjik- 4
pistes and Qstrebec- 3 pistes. The pistes on Qstrebets are the best- and all of the
competitions in the resort are taking place there!

PAMPOROVO
Pamporovo is a modern ski resort in the heart of the Rhodopi mountain, the mountain of the
mythical singer Orpheus. It is amongst the southern skiing resort in Europe. It is the sunniest
Bulgarian mountain resort with wonderful snow throughout the whole season. Pamporovo is
situated on 1650 m above the sea level at the foot of peak Snejanka (1926 m). It is 240 km far
from Sofia and 85 km from Plovdiv.
Pamporovo has an exclusive climate featuring a soft winter with about 120 sunny days during the
skiing period. The significant influence of The Aegean Sea appears here and the skiing season
starts from mid - December to mid - April. The average air temperature is - 3 ° C. The gentle
profile of the mountain with its rounded slopes and summits makes Pamporovo particularly
suitable for beginners. But there are also difficult ski runs like the Giant Slalom run which is an
excellent exercise for every skiing expert.
All ski runs are safe guarded and maintained in a very good condition. More than 100 highly
qualified ski instructors fluent in different languages are here to teach both beginners and
intermediate skiers and snowboarders. Ski rentals are available near the ski runs and the lift
stations, you can book ski equipment rental, ski school, lift pass with us.
The ski runs in Pamporovo come in all hardship levels. They are located between 1926 and 1450 m
above the sea level on the northern, eastern and western slopes of The Snejanka peak.

All major ski runs start from the peak of the mountain, where the TV tower is located.
Great off-piste skiing and snowboarding is available in this resort, however we recommend using
a local guide when going.

This elegant hotel adds a new touch of quality and friendly atmosphere to the mountain resort of
Pamporovo, and it is situated 80 kilometres south from Plovdiv and 200 kilometres from the capital
