32nd Annual International
Convention & Trade Show
International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association
Join your colleagues from across the globe Tuesday-Friday, March 19-22 at Mandalay
Bay in sunny Las Vegas for IHRSA’s 32nd Annual Convention & Trade Show!
It’s a sure thing. IHRSA 2013 is THE place to be, “where the global health and fitness industry comes
together.” There is no event like it in the world, and there is no place like Mandalay Bay.
For the first time ever, IHRSA has combined the Trade Show, Education Sessions, General Session
Speakers and Social Events, as well as the restaurants and lodging, in the same complex — to offer
attendees the utmost in convenience. Everything in one centralized location under one roof!
Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino is a world-renown 44-story luxury destination located at one end
of the Las Vegas strip in Paradise, Nevada. Owned by MGM Resorts International, one of its towers
operates as THEhotel, while the Four Seasons Hotel occupies the top floors of the second tower.
This resort, with a tropical feel, offers these and many other attractions:
• A total of 3,309 hotel rooms and the 135,000 sq ft (12,500 m2) casino
• The 1 million sq ft (93,000 m2) Mandalay Bay Convention Center, one of the largest
convention facilities in the US, and the largest meeting facility on the Las Vegas strip
• The 12,000-seat Mandalay Bay Events Center, which has hosted major events, including
headlining concerts and boxing matches, Ultimate Fighting Championship events, the Latin
Grammy Awards, and the Miss Universe pageant
• 24 restaurants to choose from, which can satisfy virtually any palate or style — from
Wolfgang Puck to the House of Blues

• The Shark Reef Aquarium, which contains the third largest tank in North America, two tunnel-shaped, walk-through aquariums, and
numerous other displays

Speakers
Bert Jacobs
Co-Founder & Chief Creative Optimist,
Life is good®
Optimism Can Take You Anywhere
Tuesday, March 19 | 11:30am-12:30pm
Sponsored by SPRI®
Bert Jacobs is co-founder and Chief Executive Optimist of The Life is
good Company. A privately held business based in Boston, MA, Life is
good® spreads positive vibes through its colorful collection of apparel
and accessories and through its social mission to help kids overcome
poverty, violence and illness. Jacobs combines innovative business
lessons, humor, and inspired story-telling to weave the compelling
story of how he and his brother John launched a business that now
sells products in over 4,500 retailers nationwide. Life is good® attracts
a rapidly growing community of optimists, including over 1.5 million
followers on Facebook, by forging meaningful, emotional connections.
Fusing the interests of children facing life-threatening challenges with
the interests of its business at every touch-point, Life is good® also
presents a powerful and inspiring model for seamlessly integrating
a for-profit and a non-profit. Jacobs’ innovative lessons on branding,
leadership and corporate social responsibility apply to organizations
of all sizes, and his inspiring story will help you see how optimism can
truly take you anywhere.
About Bert Jacobs
After graduating from Villanova University in 1987 with a degree in
communications, Jacobs enjoyed stints as a ski instructor, pizza delivery
man, and substitute teacher. In 1994, with a combined sum of just
$78 in the bank, he and his brother, John, officially launched Life is
good®. Today, its products are sold by over 4,500 retailers nationwide.
Believing that consumers are overwhelmed by too much “advertising
noise” in the marketplace, Life is good® focuses on forging meaningful,
emotional connections, and relies heavily on consumer word-of-mouth
to build its brand.

Connected: The Surprising Power
of Our Social Networks & How
They Shape Our Lives
Wednesday, March 20 | 8:30-9:30am
Sponsored by Technogym®
It is customary to think about trends in things like clothes or music as
spreading in a social network. But all kinds of things, many of them
quite unexpected, flow through social networks, and this process obeys
certain rules. Dr. Christakis has become internationally renowned for
his research on how our real-life, face-to-face social networks drive and
shape aspects of our lives that we would never suspect.
In his book
Connected, he describes the results of this groundbreaking research,
unlocking a revolutionary new understanding of the sway that we have
over one another through our connections. He outlines the fundamental
rules governing the formation and operation of social networks and describes the myriad ways that they help to shape who we are and what
we do. Dr. Christakis specializes in the impact our social networks have
on our attitudes, behaviors, and wellbeing, and has analyzed networks
ranging in size from 30 to 3,000,000 people, over periods of time as
long as 30 years.
About Nicholas Christakis
Dr. Christakis is an internist and social scientist who conducts research
on social factors that affect health, health care, and longevity. He is
Professor of Medical Sociology in the Department of Health Care Policy
at Harvard Medical School; Professor of Medicine in the Department of
Medicine at Harvard Medical School; and Professor of Sociology in the
Department of Sociology in the Harvard Faculty of Arts and Sciences.
In 2009, Christakis was named by Time magazine to their annual list
of the 100 most influential people in the world. In 2009 and in 2010,
he was listed by Foreign Policy magazine in their annual list of Top 100
Global Thinkers.

PEAK: How Great Companies Get
Their Mojo From Maslow
Thursday, March 21 | 8:30-9:30am
Sponsored by Matrix Fitness
Chip Conley, founder and former CEO of Joie de Vivre Hotels (the second
largest boutique hotelier in the U.S.) for 24 years, will talk about his
bestseller PEAK and how humanistic psychology helped his company
and others (from Apple to Zappos) create an operating model to understand the higher needs of employees and customers. Conley believes
the most neglected fact in business is that we’re all human and that
business schools don’t do enough to help us understand that creating
peak experiences for stakeholders can create peak performance for a
company. The PEAK model can be used to understand how a company
can relate to relationships beyond those with employees and customers: investors, vendors, the community, and, even with yourself. Conley’s
humanistic business model has led him to speak at the TED conference
and around the world about the importance of culture. As a practitioner
who has used his own company (with over 3,000 employees) as a laboratory for understanding the human condition, Conley’s philosophical
but prescriptive approach to leadership will be very illuminating.
Peter Sheahan
About Chip Conley
No hotel executive has overseen the development and creation of more
boutique hotels than Chip Conley, founder of Joie de Vivre Hotels, California’s largest independent hotel company. At the age of 26, Conley
transformed a seedy 1950’s hotel into the Phoenix Hotel that catered to
the likes of David Bowie, Linda Ronstadt and Nirvana. Building on an innovative design formula that inspires guests to experience an “identity
refreshment” during their stay, Joie de Vivre Hotels now consists of over
40 unique and award-winning hotels, restaurants and spas, with annual
revenues approaching $250 million. Conley and his company’s timetested techniques and transformational leadership practices have been
featured in Fast Company, Fortune, and the Wall Street Journal.

Accommodations
To reserve a hotel room, simply contact Mandalay Bay directly and ask for the discounted IHRSA Convention rates as noted below.
Requests for eleven or more guest rooms, suites, hospitality rooms, and meeting space, must be submitted in writing to IHRSA for review and
approval at [email protected] or by fax to +1 617-737-3323.
IHRSA’s discounted hotel rooms are subject to availability until Friday, February 15, 2013, unless the hotels sell-out prior to this date.
Therefore, you are encouraged to place your reservation as early as possible before the hotels are sold-out, which is expected to be before February
15. After this date the official IHRSA room blocks will be released and the hotels will charge significantly higher rates. All rates are per room, per
night; hotels may charge additional fees for rooms with more than two occupants. Special requests should be provided to the reservation agent and
are subject to availability at the time of check-in.
Both hotels are located in the same facility as the site of the IHRSA 2013 International Convention & Trade Show, and reservations can be made at
either hotel by calling the same phone number. Be sure to tell the reservations agent which hotel you prefer.
For questions about IHRSA’s official hotels, please call our message center at +1 617-316-6796.
Reservations require a one night’s deposit per room, a credit card guarantee, and are subject to a 12% room tax and a $15 resort fee per night; be
sure to ask the reservation agent about any additional fees and the hotel’s cancellation policy.
