Vinteren 2009 har tilhørt jentene i NORMA SASS. Ett drøyt år etter at de begynte å spille sammen har jentene rukket
å bli booket til Øyafestivalen, fått to låter listet på NRK P3, vunnet Zoom og sjarmert publikum i 18 norske byer på den
påfølgende vinnerturneen, og spilt inn sin første EP. Nå slipper nemlig Norma Sass sin debut-EP A Dance Of Victory
The Morning After. Dette gjør de via sin egen etikett Anticipated Records, med litt hjelp fra Tuba Records.
Platen er spilt inn og produsert av ESKILD NÆSS (DESPERADO, THE SCHOOL, DOMINIC) og THOMAS DENSTAD
i Nautilus Studios i Trondheim.
Bandet gleder seg stort, og forteller: “Det er fantastisk følelse å endelig få gitt ut noen av sangene våre! Vi har hatt
det veldig gøy med innspilling under 4 varme dager i Trondheim hvor vi fikk gjøre ting på vår måte i et ordentlig

utgivelser som tidligere kun har vært mulig å få tak i på mannens konserter + til en
viss grad på nett. Disc 1 her inneholder albumet Barefoot Days, som med unntak av
det studioinnspilte tittelsporet er innspilt live i Brighton i 2004. Disc 2, Deep In The
Heart Of Nowhere, er fra 2001, og inneholder 2 studiolåter + 10 låter innspilt live i
Otley, Yorkshire. Flotte melodier side om side med mannens varemerkede anekdoter
florerer på begge, og totalt er dette nok en herlig lavpris-gavepakke til fansen!
JACKIE spilte nylig i Oslo på Kongsberg Jazz Festival med KNUT BUEN.

FRANK TURNER er en engelsk singer/songwriter med bakgrunn som vokalist i
det ikke totalt ukjente punkpandet MILLION DEAD. Dette albumet ble sluppet til
strålende kritikker i UK høsten 2008, og fans av f.ex. THE GASLIGHT ANTHEM,
MIKE NESS, BILLY BRAGG og MONEYBROTHER bør skaffe dette albumet, som
er en god forsmak på mannens splitter nye studioalbum, som slippes senere i høst.

GREY MACHINE is, without a shadow of a doubt, the most realized collaborative effort
between JUSTIN BROADRICK (JESU, GODFLESH, NAPALM DEATH, HEAD OF DAVID,
GOD etc), DAVE COCHRANE (HEAD OF DAVID, GOD, ICE), DIARMUID DALTON
(JESU, GODFLESH) and AARON TURNER (ISIS, OLD MAN GLOOM etc.) ever! If
you’re a fan of GODFLESH, or have even a fleeting interest in the band, this bud’s for
you; if you subscribe to The Aural & Visual Art of AARON TURNER this shits a pool party.
Disconnected, the album in question, is at once jarring and ethereal.... which is, as you
may already know, the kind of combination that results in entire city blocks bobbin’ their
heads to dis... In summation, GREYMACHINE sounds like a serious case of cyberbullying
through the mind of an extremely autistic child living in an ever-shifting hadean landscape
thronged with mindless militants, dilapidated cityscapes and ephemeral phantoms... so to
summarize the summation, Disconnected is haunting and modern sounding... In a good
way.
- This project has been years in the making via transatlantic tape trading from the various
members.
- The packaging for this job is a meaty son-of-a-bitch. Vellum cover, high gloss stock,
metallic printing; it’s a perfect reflection of the music.
- There is a possible remix version of the complete album, care of Mr. Broadrick, in the
works.

To be fair, there’s a certain convenience about perfection. It’s easy to wear and see and swallow and enjoy, and it
leaves the heart light. It’s also totally boring. And though occasionally friendly and welcoming, literal perfection in
pop music is never, ever awesome.
Which is where Telekinesis comes in. On record, Michael Lerner is the sole member of Telekinesis, more or less. He writes, sings and plays the songs. His love of Japan knows no bounds, though
he’s never been. He’s a fantastic drummer and a fearless singer. And he does not look back willingly.
I mean, you can forcibly crane his head around in a pinch (mortal danger and Seinfeld reruns qualify). But Michael’s
songs are ridiculously immediate, and he delivers them with blinding velocity. His approach to music isn’t unlike
those spikes at the rental car place: Backing up deflates the tires, and not in a pleasant way.
It’s reflected in Michael’s writing, too, this philosophy of ever- forward motion. These are big-hearted songs, written
quickly and from the gut. Telekinesis is the geography of dreams; a school year abroad; love letters from Liverpool coffee
shops to the Carolina coastline and Tokyo and everywhere in between everywhere; a road trip waiting to happen. And
it’s absolutely perfect, but not because anyone went back to fix it. It just happened that way. - Chris Walla, January 2009
Telekinesis is Michael Benjamin Lerner (drums, guitar & vocals) with Chris Staples (guitar), David Broecker (electric,
acoustic & bass guitar), and Jonie Broecker (bass guitar & keyboards) joining him on tour. They all live in Seattle, WA.
Telekinesis! was produced, engineered, and mixed by Chris Walla (Death Cab for Cutie, The Decemberists, Tegan &
Sara). Walla and Lerner tracked and mixed each of its songs to analog tape in a single day before moving on to the
next song, with the ambitious goal of never over-thinking or sabotaging the spontaneous enthusiasm of the music.
As bonus this release also includes the five-track-EP “Coast of Carolina” from early 2009.

Inflatory export of bands from their neighbours Sweden and Finland cannot always be seen in a positive light. Average becomes the standard. But clocks tick differently in Norway, as the last albums of PAGAN’S MIND and CIRCUS
MAXIMUS prove, both of which were way above the general norm and which caused a furore on the prog metal
scene. It is from the neighbourhood of these two groups that we now welcome ILLUSION SUITE and their debut
album “Final Hour”. And we can already claim that we have here one of the finest, most intensive, expressive and

“Final Hour” will please all the people who have been wandering around in musical limbo since DREAM
THEATER’s album “A Change Of Season”, looking for an adequate replacement. ILLUSION SUITE
puts an end to the wandering, the multifaceted songs of “Final Hour” leaves no doubt about it. The
musical quality is immense, the song structures are deeply embedded without being too demanding,
the balance between ass-kicking riffs and unforgettable multi-part vocals is pleasant and compatible
to a mass audience without bowing to commercialism. The songs gain more and more class, the more
intensive one studies them. “Average” does not come into it - the amazingly exciting songs get to you
in a flash: Nine songs, nine musicial jewels, which will glitter in the eyes of prog metal fans. The bridge
between high-class, hard harten song structures and mass-compatible choruses has no equal, as can
be clearly heard in the hymnlike “Scarlet Skies”. The lively “The Passage” expresses more driving riffs
than playfulness, whilst the almost seven minute long “Pandora’s Box” displays all the band’s musical
know-how. The highlight however is the 15 minute long “The Adventures Of Arcan”, which begins in a
very DREAM THEATER-like manner but soon gains a life of its own. Singer Bill Makatowicz’s expressive,
charismatic voice really impresses itself on the track. “Final Hour” is a musical masterpiece without any
weaknesses whatsoever and one which is sure to unreservedly please prog metal fans.

Richmond Fontaine’s 8th album finds the band at their peak both artistically and commercially. A long time critics fave they now reach beyond the ‘Kings of Americana’ tag they
were given by Uncut Magazine, sounding more like a cross between The Jayhawks,
Replacements and Springsteen.
The album was written by lead singer Willy Vlautin who has also released two fiction
novels to great acclaim ‘The Motel Life’ and ‘Northline’. Vlautin’s third novel will be published
in Feb 2010 for Faber & Faber.
Produced by JD Foster (Dwight Yokam, Calexico), at Jackpot studios in Portland
(Elliott Smith, The Decemberists and The Shins). The core of the band is still
multi-instrumentalist Paul Brainard -pedal steel and piano, Willy Vlautin - guitars,
vocals, Sean Oldham - drums, Dave Harding - Bass and Dan Eccles - guitar.
Formed in 1994 Richmond Fontaine hit big in 2004 and have become a strong touring outfit

Two years after the release of their last album, eccentric pop maestros múm return with their
fifth album proper, simply named Sing Along to Songs You Don’t Know, a flickering candle of
an album. The album is a much more laid back album than Múm’s most recent outings, more
relaxed and quietly sad, often recalling sand running through fingers or ripples on a lake.
And to an even greater extent than their previous albums, Sing Along to Songs You Don’t
Know is an ode to the light in its different shapes, from a fading bulb to the blinding sun.
Sometimes the music sounds naively utopic, but always manages to stay effortless and pure.
As usual, the songs are brimming with unusual sounds, this time much of the songs revolve around
a lightly prepared piano, hammered dulcimer, a string quartet, marimbas, guitars, ukuleles and in
the background of a few of the songs one can hear Örvar’s parent’s parakeet singing with the piano.
The album was recorded in countless different places in four different countries, although
most of it was done in Múm’s native Iceland. Gunnar Örn Tynes moved to a cabin in the
countryside where much of the album sprang to life, but as always Mùm have a hard time
staying put and recorded in both Estonia and Finland. In Estonia borrowed a beautiful, many
hundred-year-old house in Leigo, a place of hundreds of lakes, where they wrote new songs
and recorded with the Estonian Suisapäisa Mixed choir.
Much of the music was hatched in the middle of Iceland’s recent political turmoil and uprising.
The Icelandic government was forced to resign after intermittent civil unrest and the constant
banging of pots and pans. By stretching the imagination, one can imagine a link between the
turbulent political situation and the serene idealism hidden in the music.

After five years, two full length albums and countless high profile tours and festival gigs, including the Leeds Festival, Reading and Lollapalooza, JULIETTE LEWIS is ready to unveil her
new album Terra Incognita, scheduled for release 31 Aug 2009. With an exciting new sound
and a significantly diverse collection of songs, LEWIS decided to form a different band to
capture her whole new groove and launch this next musical project. Instrumental in creating
the sound for this new record is the album’s producer OMAR RODRIGUEZ-LOPEZ, leader of
The Mars Volta. Juliette and Omar met while both on tour at the Fuji Rock Festival in Japan in
2007 and soon bonded over their love of Fellini movies and the relationship between drama,
visual images and songwriting. Together they have translated her ideas into an emotionally
guttural and ultimately melodic and unpredictable, new sound.
LEWIS wrote most of the 11 tracks with long time friend and musician Chris Watson over
the past year and at home on piano using a tape recorder. She then recorded the album in
between both of her and Omar’s tours at the end of 2008 at RODRIGUEZ-LOPEZ’s studio in
Brooklyn NY and Guadalajara Mexico. The record was mixed by the legendary Rich Costey
(NIN, Muse, Foo Fighters).

Debut album In the Halls of Awaiting (2002) introduced a young and fierce band that combine aggression and violent riffing to melancholic atmosphere. Marriage of Scandinavian death metal and traditional
Finnish tunes, catchy but progressive, melodic but brutal these have been the Insomnium trademarks
ever since. Debut was praised all over the metal world but the band still remained Finland’s best kept
secret. With Since the Day It All Came Down (2004) the band moved further from the beaten paths of
the genre. Album was darker, more challenging and the songs took meandering pathways: a rewarding
journey for those who dare to take it. Exaltations followed, the prestige grew. In 2005 Insomnium made
its first real tour outside Finland as they hit the shores of UK. The road had been long, narrow and rocky,
but now things started to roll. Third album Above the Weeping World (2006) was the breakthrough.
Compositions and arrangements had reached a new pinnacle and the overall sound was heavier and
richer. Album was tighter, meaner and more menacing than ever. Long-time friend Aleksi Munter did
the epic keyboard parts which added a whole new layer to the songs. Album took the 9th spot on the
Finnish album charts, Mortal Share video blared in MTV and Insomnium made long tours in Europe
and North America with bands like Amorphis, Katatonia, Enslaved and Satyricon.
New album Across the Dark (2009) shows a band that knows its strenghts but isn’t afraid to evolve.
Crux of the music is still melodic death metal but nuances are giving it a unique flavour. Keyboards are
overwhelmingly epic and there are some stunning clean vocals by Jules Näveri. Bit of folk metal, pinch
of doom, some thrashing, a whole lot of timeless melodies and progressive twists and there you have
it: ingredients of the masterpiece.

Grand Archives’ second full-length album, like much of its predecessor, was crafted at
Paradise Sound in Index, WA with help from producer Ben Kersten (who also recorded The
Grand Archives, the band’s 2008 debut). A few friends dropped by during recording. Brooke’s
former Carissa’s Wierd cohorts, Jenn Ghetto and Sera Cahoone, sang backing
vocals. The gorgeous streaks of pedal steel across the wistful sweep of “Oslo Novelist” come

“Topsy’s Revenge,” inspired by the infamous 1903 newsreel footage of Thomas Edison
electrocuting a rogue Coney Island elephant. Songs like “Dig That Crazy Grave,” a buoyant
ditty redolent of Southern California and summer afternoons, and the insistent, soaring “Silver
Among the Gold” find their place here as well. It’s an album made up of disparate elements
artfully fit together and brought to life with affecting results: Keep in Mind Frankenstein.

Gordon Gano, co-founder of and songwriter for alt-rock monoliths The Violent Femmes
returns to the scene he helped spawn with Under the Sun. Film-scoring brothers and
Bogmen members Brendan and Billy Ryan join Gano for Gordon Gano & The Ryans’
first collaboration and Gordon’s first non-Femmes release as a front man. Gano’s influence
on alternative music is immeasurable and his latest work is sure to remind the music world
of the force and presence with which he originally stormed onto the scene in 1983, paving
the way for the commercial explosion of alternative music a decade later. Gano’s signature
emotionalism is present in full force on razor-edged ballads like title track ‘Under the Sun’
and the gorgeously unfurling ‘Still Suddenly Here.’ Tense propulsion underpin ‘Wave and
Water’ and ‘Man in the Sand.’ His most cohesive collaboration yet, Under the Sun marks the
beginning of a promising partnership with the Ryans and the return of a musical heavyweight.

The Melvins will release Chicken Switch, a 15-song remix CD with a twist. Unlike usual
remix CDs where the re-mixer is given a single track to work with, for Chicken Switch each
re-mixer was given a full album to work with and pull from to create their track (and in some
cases, more than one full album was used as source material). The song names were also
newly selected by their remixer.

Volcano Choir is the assembly of Wisconsinites Jon Mueller, Chris Rosenau,
Jim Schoenecker, Daniel Spack, Justin Vernon, and Thomas Wincek.
One might find these old friends also frequenting records and stages under the monikers
Collections of Colonies of Bees and Bon Iver. The Volcano Choir
collaboration predates the meteoric rise of Justin Vernon’s Bon Iver project, with original
songwriting dating back to the summer of 2005 - right around the time the Bees first toured
with Vernon’s previous band DeYarmond Edison.

While entirely a studio record, the collection doesn’t suffer from a digital pile up or
over-thinking. Rather, it breathes and convulses in equal measure, radiating an inherent
dynamism found only in the voluntary bondage of intimacy. With influences ranging from
David Sylvian and Steve Reich to Mahalia Jackson and Tom Waits, it might be more
accurate to say the group’s influence is music itself. You can hear it in the care and real love generously
applied to each moment of Unmap. With the vibe of some intimate backwoods gospel, plus a
spirit of patience and thoughtful repetition, the music of Volcano Choir is as dynamic as it is lovely.
Unmap ultimately came together over a weekend in November 2008 in Fall Creek,
Wisconsin, at Justin and brother Nate Vernon’s recording studio. And while it is at its heart a
record about the allure of being with people you need and making something with them, it is
also a document created by musicians with rare gifts getting together to exorcise their ideas
about beauty. This scaffolding of loops and off grid tempos for choral style vocals offers a
state of continual surprise, call it unexpectation.
