Work
There are three main processes in diamond cutting which need lapidarists: bruting, bottom
faceting and top faceting. Bruting
Bruting is the task of rounding the corners of the stone in order to give it its round shape.
This job requires the lapidarist to carefully cut the stone with a bruting machine while
analysing and ensuring correct proportions. Bottom Faceting
Bottom faceting creates the bottom facets on a cut diamond. The diamond is placed in a
pot and the lapidarist then has to glide the stone on a spinning disk in order to give it the
needed shape.

Top Faceting
Top faceting works in the same way as bottom faceting. However, it is only the dop that
changes in order to take into account the different angle at which the top part of the stone
needs to be polished.
Training period and skill set acquired
Diamond cutting is an art which takes time to
learn. During this learning period, we pay a
salary to the trainee and ensure that he or
she can reach the best level of excellence.
Each according to his or her own capacity,
some trainees learn faster than others and
we adapt our training accordingly. Diamond
cutting is accessible to everyone as there
aren’t any skill sets required other than those
acquired in secondary school. The official training period is 6 months. During that time, the trainee will be assigned a
section, supervised, given the necessary tools and taught the needed techniques. The
salary is adjusted according to the skill level enabling fast learners to reach a higher level of
pay before the end of the 6 month period. Furthermore, learning how to polish diamonds teaches the use of basic geometrical
concepts and trains the lapidarist in the science of planning ahead, seeing the finished
product, skills that can be used in other industries. !
